Focusing the Gospel

Earlier in the Gospel of Luke we hear of John the Baptist’s childhood in which ‘the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel’. This desert time is important for John’s formation as the preacher we hear in the gospel today. In the desert one must listen. John proclaims the words of the prophet Isaiah to the people, “Prepare the way of the Lord” These words were addressed originally to the Israelites in exile in Babylon. The way being prepared was the way the Lord would lead them out of exile and restore them to their homeland.

Now John invites his listeners to undertake an interior way of repentance. Excerpt from Living Liturgy

BLESSING OF CRIBS AND NATIVITIES

The origins of the Christmas crib date back to the life of St. Francis of Assisi (1181-1226). He used life-size figures and live animals to help focus people’s attention on the birth of the Christ-child.

Today in our Churches throughout the Diocese we bless our Christmas cribs and nativities and take them back to our homes to focus our attention on the reason for the season.

God of every nation and people,

from the very beginning of creation

You made manifest Your love:

when our need for a Saviour was great

You sent Your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary.

To our lives He brings joy and peace,

justice, mercy and love.

Lord,

bless all who look upon these cribs and nativities;

may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus,

and raise up our thoughts to Him,

who is God-with-us and Saviour of all,

and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Today we light the second of our Advent candles, called the Bethlehem Candle to remind us of the place of the birth of the Messiah.

We welcome our senior parishioners to our annual Seniors’ Lunch. We thank them for their decades of

generous and faithful service to Christ and His Church and we thank all those who have planned and

contributed to the success of this special gathering.

Thought for the Week

It’s hard to believe how cruel human beings can sometimes be to one another.

(Fr. Bill Edwards sdb)

A special Nativity story

On our European holiday this year, Jeff and I visited Oberammergau in Germany, a place famous for the passion play where I looked for a St Joseph statue to buy for our school. In the first shop we found, the shopkeeper asked where we were from and, after several questions narrowing down to Port Lincoln, he said, “Ah yes - St Mary of the Angels Catholic Church”!!! We were amazed to find someone on the other side of the world who knew the name of our Parish and he explained that he had been at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney in 1978, demonstrating his woodcarving, and a priest (Fr Laurie Quinn) had bought a Madonna statue for the new church in Port Lincoln. Josef Albl had hand-carved our beautiful Mary and, 30 years later, was selling me the Nativity figurines for St Joseph’s School.

It was indeed a special moment on our holiday. Karen Browne
