There are 6 billion mobile subscriptions globally, & 1 billion smartphones in use

The first number is from the ITU (note that many people have more than one phone so this is not 6 billion people with mobiles), and the second comes from Strategy Analytics who estimate that by the end of Q3 2012 there were 1.038 billion smartphones in use

Google is activating 1.3m Android devices a day

Google has revealed that it is activating 1.3 million Android devices a day, up from 1 million a day in June. In September the install base was 480m users, so it must be over 500 million by now

Apple has spent over $1bn advertising the iPhone and iPad

People always assume that the product, the reviews and buzz sell Apple products, but they also advertise very, very heavily – up to $200m per year since 2007

Almost half of the UK’s smartphone users have used their phones to research product information before or during a shopping visit, which means that smartphones influence 6%, or over £15 billion in UK sales. Slightly simplistic working, but still an interesting figure

Instagram may seem like it’s just for hipsters, but these days 45% of the pictures posted have no filter on them. It’s just a very good photo-sharing technology

The Daily Mail is now the world’s most visited English language newspaper site, and has announced that it is profitable, with total revenues are up 75% year on year

The FT has more digital subscribers than newspaper buyers

The Financial Times’ parent company Pearson revealed that the paper had more than 300,000 digital subscribers, but its print circulation had fallen to 297,000 copies

The new Kindle Fire is all about the content

Jeff Bezos of Amazon says that "we want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices", and that they will make no money from the sale of the devices. It’s the clearest statement yet that the Kindle is all about the content that goes in it

Crowdsourcing site Quirky produced 15 new iPhone 5 accessories in 7 days

Making physical products can be nearly as fast as creating digital content. Users of the Crowdsourcing site Quirky started work on a range of iPhone 5 products (mainly cases and mounts) and had them on sale via Fab.com within 7 days

Over one billion people use Facebook

According to Mark Zuckerberg Facebook reached this milestone at 12.45pmm Pacific Standard Time on 14th September. Other stats included 219 billion photos uploaded, and 17 billion location-tagged posts, including checkins

There are over a billion searches on Facebook every day

Is Facebook planning a search product? It’s easy to see why it might – currently it gets over a billion search queries per day, and one Facebook financial ‘Holy Grail’ might be to try to answer these using links and results from friends in the algorithm

Paddy Power caught the mood of its British customers well by amplifying Tweets cheering on the European Ryder Cup Team by writing them in the sky over Medinah, visible over 20 miles away

Kellogg’s Special K Tweetshop

Brands have let people ‘pay with a tweet’ before – it’s well known for eBooks and music – but Kellogg’s did it in a physical store for the first time in London in September to launch their Special K Cracker Crisps. Customers had to post a tweet with the hashtag inside the shop to claim a free packet

Customers who see ads on Facebook spent 24% more on Play.com than customers who had not engaged with the campaign; while customers who were making their first purchase spend 30% more

Bulmer’s Facebook fans are worth an extra 80 bottles a year each

Bulmer’s conducted research on Fans and other cider drinkers on Facebook and calculated that the fans bought an average of 80 bottles a year extra – worth an extra £198.64 a year to the brand per fan

There were more Tweets mentioning the opening ceremony than for the whole of the Beijing 2008 Games

According to Twitter there were 9.66 million mentions of the Opening Ceremony, more than for all the events in Beijing, a sign of how far Twitter has come in four years
