Each state high school association adopting these NFHS wrestling rules is the sole and exclusive source of binding rules interpretations for contests involving its member schools. Any person having questions about the interpretation of NFHS wrestling rules should contact the wrestling rules interpreter designated by his or her state high school association.

The NFHS is the sole and exclusive source of model interpretations of NFHS wrestling rules. State rules interpreters may contact the NFHS for model wrestling rules interpretations. No other model wrestling rules interpretations should be considered.

A concussion is a brain injury that results in a temporary disruption of normal brain function-

A concussion occurs when the brain is violently rocked back and forth or twisted inside the skull as a result of a blow to the head or body-

Neither referees, nor coaches, are expected to “diagnose” a concussion, as that is the job of an appropriate health-care professional-

Referees, coaches and administrators are being asked to make all efforts to ensure that concussed athletes do not continue to participate-

The referee is not responsible for the evaluation or management of the athlete after he or she is removed from competition-

If an appropriate health-care professional on the mat determines that the athlete HAS NOT suffered a concussion, the athlete may return to competition-

If there is no appropriate health-care professional available to evaluate the athlete, the athlete SHOULD NOT be allowed by the coach to return to competition-

Athletes with continued concussion symptoms are at significant risk for recurrent, cumulative and even catastrophic consequences of a second concussive injury-

Rule 1-2-2: No wrestler shall represent the school in more than one

weight class in any meet or compete in more than five matches (championship or consolation), including forfeits in any one day.

Rule 1-2-3: No contestant shall wrestle in two consecutive matches

with less than a 45-minute rest between them. The conclusion time of each match shall be recorded.

Rule 1-2-4: A contestant shall not accept a forfeit in one weight class

and compete in another class.

**NFHS Rule 2-2-1NFHS Rule 2-2-1:: For dual meets, all team personnel, including coaches, other than actual participating contestants shall be restricted to an area which is at least 10 feet10 feet from the edge of the mat and the scorer’s table, where facilities permit.

*NFHS Rule 2-2-2:*NFHS Rule 2-2-2: During tournament competition, a maximum of twotwo team personnel (coaches and/or non-participating contestants) will be permitted on chairs at the edge of the mat. It is permissible to allow coaches on the corner of the mat in a restricted zone. In tournaments where coaches are permitted on the corner of the mat, the restricted zone shall be defined by either a contrasting line marked on the mat with paint or tape or a contrasting colored surface under the chairs. The restricted zone shall be no closer than 5 feet to the edge of the circle. Coaches shall be seated at least 10 feet 10 feet from the scorer’s table, where facilities permit.

Conduct of Coaches, Team Personnel and Others*NFHS Rule 7-5-2:*NFHS Rule 7-5-2: Coaches and other team personnel are restricted to the bench/chairs while the clock is running and during normal out of bounds and resumption of wrestling. The coach may move towards the mat only during a charged time-out or at the end of the match. (See Rule 2-2)

The six (6) qualifying weigh-ins must occur between November 15, 2010 and January 24, 2011. Additionally, one of the six (6) qualifying weigh-ins must occur in the month of January 2011 and at least one (1) of the qualifying weigh-ins must be at scratch weight for the weight class the wrestler is entered into the IHSAA tournament series. A weigh-in at scratch weight is defined as a wrestler weighing in at or below the actual poundage of the weight class (i.e. – a wrestler weighs in at 111.9 achieves a scratch weigh in for the 112 pound weight class)

2010-2011 IHSAA WRESTLING WEIGH-IN REGULATIONS Preface As per the NFHS Wrestling Rules Book, state associations that utilize hydration and body-fat testing along with a program to monitor average weight loss of 1 ½ %, may use the minimum weight determined by the body-fat testing as the lowest weight a wrestler may wrestle during the state series instead of at least one-half of their weigh-ins. Indiana has adopted this protocol for determining qualification into the wrestling tournament series. The following information details the regulations for qualification into the IHSAA tournament series. The Regulation

1. All wrestlers must have a minimum of six (6) “qualifying” weigh-ins prior to Monday, J anuary 24, 2011 which is the Monday prior to the sectional and the day of the seeding meetings. The six (6) qualifying weigh-ins must occur between November 15, 2010 and J anuary 24, 2011. Additionally, one of the six (6) qualifying weigh-ins must occur in the month of J anuary 2010 and at least one (1) of the qualifying weigh-ins must be at scratch weight for the weight class the wrestler is entered into the IHSAA tournament series. A weigh-in at scratch weight is defined as a wrestler weighing in at or below the actual poundage of the weight class (i.e. – a wrestler weighs in at 111.9 achieves a scratch weigh in for the 112 pound weight class)

2. A qualifying weigh-in occurs when a wrestler weighs in at or above his/her minimum weight for that date as determined by the individual wrestler’s weight management plan. As per IHSAA by-law 60-2.b, a weigh-in for a tournament shall count as one weigh-in toward the total of six (6).

3. For a wrestler to be eligible for the IHSAA tournament series, their coach must possess an official IHSAA Individual Wrestler Weigh-In Record sheet for each wrestler they intend to enter into the tournament series. This document is available on the IHSAA website at www.ihsaa.org under Boys Sports > Wrestling > Wrestling Forms. This record must reflect each weigh-in for the wrestler and six (6) qualifying weigh-ins must be present prior to Monday, J anuary 24, 2011. This record, along with the individual weight loss plan generated by the NWCA internet calculator must be present at the seeding meeting on Monday, J anuary 24, 2011.

4. A wrestler must have passed his/her specific gravity urine test and have been measured for body fat percentages with all data entered into the NWCA internet calculator and a report generated for that student prior to their first competition.

5. A coach may enter his wrestler in the IHSAA tournament series in any weight class that wrestler may be eligible for provided that wrestler has adhered to their individual weight management program that states a wrestler may never lose more than 1 ½ % of their body weight per week.

At no time may a wrestler compete in a weight class lower than he/she is entered on the IHSAA sectional entry list.

This document must be

presented at the sectional

seeding meeting and completed in every detail.

2010-2011 INDIANA HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

INDIVIDUAL WRESTLER WEIGH IN RECORD As per Rule 1-3-2 of the NFHS Wrestling Rule Book, state associations that have hydration and body-fat testing along with a program to monitor an average weight loss of 1 ½ % a week, with descent, may use the minimum weight determined by the body-fat testing as the lowest weight a wrestler may wrestle during the state series instead of at least ½ of their weigh-ins during the season as stated in Rule 1-3-2 b. Coaches are hereby instructed to maintain an individual wrestler weigh in record for each wrestler reporting to compete. The contest official shall weigh in the competitor as per the NFHS Wrestling Rule Book. The contest official will only record the weight of the wrestler on the team weigh-in sheet provided by the coach. The coach will then hold the responsibility to transpose the record made by the contest official to this individual wrestler weigh-in record sheet. It is the responsibility of coaches to compare the weigh-in of the wrestler to his/her individual weight loss plan as produced by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) website from the information entered for each wrestler. If the wrestler weighs in at or above his/her minimum weight on the specific date in question, the wrestler receives a “qualifying weigh-in.” The coach shall mark in the appropriate space on the chart that the wrestler did in fact achieve a qualifying weigh -in. To be eligible for the tournament series, a wrestler must attain six (6) qualifying weigh-ins prior to January 24, 2011. Additionally, at least one of the six (6) qualifying weigh-ins must occur in the month of January 2011 and at least one of the qualifying weights must be at scratch weight in the weight class the wrestler is entered in the IHSAA tournament series. Coaches are instructed to circle the weigh-in that meets the requirement of making scratch weight in the weight class the wrestler is entered in the IHSAA tournament se ries. Each weigh-in for any tournament shall count as only one weigh-in toward the minimum requirements for the state tournament series qualification (Rule 60-2 b – IHSAA By-Laws). This document, along with a copy of the wrestler’s individual weight loss plan as produced by the NWCA, must be present at the seeding meeting prior to the sectional tournament.
