Viva España!Tapas originate from Spain. They are small plates of food usually served with drinks. In Andalucia, where we recently had a holiday, tapas are still served free with drinks! Why not throw a tapas night? Green olives and good bread are a must, along with a few other dishes. Here are some of my favourites. Oh and remember the sangria and cerveza.....Patatas Bravas with

Chorizo & Spicy Tomato Sauce

1kg baby new potatoes1 tbsp olive oil1 tsp paprika170g chorizo - slicedfor the sauce1 medium onion - chopped400g tin tomatoes2 cloves garlic - chopped2 tbsp olive oil1 red chilli - chopped1 tbsp tomato pureesalt & pepperwhite wine/sherry (optional)

Baked Tortilla Squares2 tbsp olive oil2 med onions - thinly sliced1 potato (250g) - thinly sliced2 cloves garlic - crushed6 large eggs2 tbsp parsley - choppedsalt & pepper

Hot, Hot, Hot Garlic Prawns380g uncooked king prawns2 tbsp olive oil2 cloves garlic -thinly sliced1 - 2 red chillies - finely sliced1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce1 tbsp parsley - chopped

methodHeat oven to 200°C. In a large non-stick frying pan gently fry the onion, potato & garlic until they are cooked. This may take quite a while so be careful not to burn. Cool the mixture down. Break eggs into a bowl, add parsley and the cooled potato & onion mixture. Season really well then tip into a well oiled 20cm square non-stick baking tin. Bake for 20 mins or until cooked and browned on top. Tip out of tin and cut into squares. (makes 16)

methodHeat oven to 200°C. Boil potatoes in a large pan of salted water until cooked. Drain & place in a roasting tin. Crush slightly so they crack open. Toss in olive oil, sprinkle with paprika and bake until they have crispy edges (about 25 mins). Meanwhile, fry the chorizo slices in a non stick pan til they go crisp. Drain off some oil and mix in with crispy potatoes. For the sauce, heat oil in a small pan, gently cook the onion & garlic til soft. Careful not to burn. Add chilli & tomato puree & cook for 2 mins. Add splash of wine & boil til reduced. Add tomatoes, bring to boil then simmer gently til reduced to thick sauce (30 mins). Liquidise to a smooth sauce. Serve sauce on top of spuds or in a separate jug. (serves 6-8)

methodHeat oil in a pan and gently cook the garlic and chilli slices for a few minutes. Add prawns to the pan and cook until they turn pink. Add the sweet chilli sauce. Mix well and serve sprinked with parsley.

FREE PAINT SCHEME

Nottinghamshire County Council run a Community RePaint scheme at Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop Recycling Centres. Public donations of paint accepted at these sites are checked by the site staff and any tins that contain good quality reusable paint are put aside in a designated shelved paint cabin. This reusable paint is then given away free of charge, throughout the year, to community and voluntary groups registered on the scheme. The paint cabins are filling up well with reusable paint so we’re inviting groups to apply so that they can get their hands on some free paint. Over 100 groups have received around 12,000 litres of reusable paint so far but we’re always keen to help even more. For more information go to:

In December 1870, an event took place in Lowdham village that would be a talking point in the shops and inns of the village for years to come.

The village carrier needed a new van and after investigating the cost of purchasing one from a coach builder he decided that it would be cheaper to build it himself. With no workshop, he began building it in the front room of his house.

What his wife and family thought of this plan is not recorded but can only be imagined as there were only two rooms in most houses at the time, the kitchen and the parlour.

For many weeks he laboured at the task during any spare moments. After several months, the work was completed and the van was painted in his livery and finally ready to take pride of place on the road. Then like the cartoons of a later generation he discovered, of course, that he had no way to get it out of the small front door of his house and onto the street.

After much thought he decided to remove the front window and try to get the van out that way. Not being a very practical man in matters of building he sensibly decided to ask professional advice. Quite likely on the advice of his poor family!!

His friend Mr Boniface was the landlord of the Lord Nelson Inn situated in the village. Mr Boniface, like many landlords at the time, also happened to have a second profession to enable him to make a living when times were hard.

Mr Boniface was by chance a builder and when the carrier told him of his dilemma, after he had stopped laughing, he advised his friend that his only course of action was to remove not only the window but most of the front wall of his house as well!

Thanks to the skill of his builder friend, the door, window and most of the front wall of the house was dismantled while most of the village watched, greatly amused by the poor mans problem.

After much struggling, the van finally emerged into the street to great cheers from the assembled crowd. Mr Boniface then proceeded to start reconstruction of the front of the house.

It must be remembered that this was all being done in the midst of winter and that the family were occupying the house all the time. I expect that the wife of the carrier had a few choice words to say to her husband after the event had been concluded!!

We can only hope that he obtained a lot more business with his new van as he then had to pay for the work that Mr Boniface had done taking down and rebuilding the house. Taking all costs into account the coach builders price looks like good value in hindsight!

Calverton MW FC Appoint New

First Team ManagerScott Wood has been appointed as the new First Team Manager at Calverton MW FC. The club plays in the Central Midlands League and have made steady progress in the last two seasons under Paul and Jason Desnica.

Scott Wood has been a player at the club for the last few years and now turns his hand to becoming a manager for the first time.

His professional experience at Nottingham Forest, Notts County, Sheffield United and Dover Athletic will provide him with a great amount of knowledge to use in the time ahead, working as he has with the likes of Dave Beasant, Paul Hart and Frank Clark.

Scott fully appreciates the task ahead as he looks to take a fairly young side forward and as they gain more experience, he is already working on his plans for a few new faces at the club, be they players, backroom staff, and the preparation for pre-season.

Training for the squad started on 22 June under the watchful eye of Bill Bennett, a winner of the East Midlands Coach of the Year Award.

A very promising season lies ahead.

We are well and truly into summer now and it would be remiss of me not to remind you about securing the property you leave behind when you jet off for your holiday this year.

If you are planning to jump on a plane for a couple of weeks in the sun don’t leave your home vulnerable to thieves. Leave your home as a fortress while you are away and do all you can to make someone on the outside think you are home.

Ensure all your doors and windows are locked, and then check one more time before you set off. Install a burglar alarm and use it. Don’t leave valuable items, including keys, on view through windows.

Ask relatives to bring in your bin and collect your mail. Put lights on timers and if you are really swish put your curtains on timers too. Perhaps your neighbour has another car they can park on your driveway in your absence.

Don’t forget your vehicles. If you are leaving a car behind, where possible keep it in a locked garage or on your driveway. Maybe even lend it to an insured relative so it’s seen to be driven back and forth from your home.

Never leave items on display in your vehicle, including power/charging leads, and always leave your glove box open and parcel shelf off so anyone having a gander will see there is nothing of value inside. Security mark your belongings and register them on a free site such as www.immobilise.com

Make sure you tell neighbours you trust that you will be away so they can keep an eye on your home. Ask them to pop around every so often to check the doors and windows of your home, sheds, garages and cars. You can bring them a little something back from your jollies as a thank you. It will be cheaper than the repair and replacement bill and increased insurance premiums if you are burgled.

If you notice something out of the ordinary in your street, and especially around the homes and cars of those neighbours who you know are away, contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Elsewhere, motorists have fallen victim to theft from their vehicles after leaving valuable items on display. People are still leaving handbags and other valuables on the seats of their unattended cars. No matter where you park, think about who might be around. Don’t give anyone the incentive. If there’s nothing inside there’s nothing to steal. Report suspicious activity around vehicles to 101 immediately.

Staying on the roads, in collaboration with Gedling Borough Council we are hoping to launch a Community Speedwatch initiative, following concerns raised by residents about speeding on certain roads. It’s nice to hear people willing to join us in our quest to keep people safe. Abide by the law, drive to the conditions of the carriageways and stick to the speed limit, and you will have nothing to worry about.

I know I’m probably a little bit obsessed (truly) but I do get VERY excited when pretty, feminine colours come into the shops, it just makes me feel so much happier being surrounded by colour (a little bit like the sunshine).

This season seems to be exceptionally pretty:There are bold beautiful pinks, oranges, turquoises and greens to tempt you and also some lovely pastel shades - dusky pinks, eggshell blues and mint greens. When I saw the dusky pink collection at the buyers, I just fell in love with it and went a little bit crazy buying trousers, jackets, tops blouses and scarves - all in this gorgeous pink. At one point I had a bit of a” dusky pink boutique” going on with, of course, lots of white linen to compliment. Luckily for me the customers are loving it too and it’s flying off the rails!

Another huge trend this summer is FLOWERS. Tiny flowers, big bold flowers, daisies, roses, wild flowers and they’re all being teamed together! Mixed and matched with different materials of different textures – it looks absolutely lovely.

What I find wonderful is that it’s virtually impossible now to walk into any fashion shop and say “these colours don’t suit me” or “these colours are not on my colour chart”. There are sooooo many different shades of each and every colour out there and one of them just has to suit your skin tone.

Something that I have to talk about is how absolutely fabulous it is that in every recent fashion magazine there have been articles about “real clothes for real ladies”. Anyone

who knows Boutique 11 knows that’s what we’re all about.

It’s taken the fashion industry a very long time to realize that if a lady’s not a size 8 or 5ft 8in or still in her twenties, she still wants to look gorgeous.

We don’t want to come home from shopping feeling we’re not thin enough or young enough or tall enough to wear something gorgeous. We don’t want to try and look 28 or look fuddy duddy either, we just want to look smart and pretty and fun and feel comfortable.

I cannot say it often enough (being the wrong side of fifty) - we ladies are definitely getting better and better with age.

I truly believe that we now have so much choice in the fashion market both in sizes and styles. Yes, it may need a little tweaking, but the main thing is that the clothes are really out there for you to choose from.

The trick is NOT to wear top-to-toe everything that you think you should be wearing just because it’s “in Fashion”. Instead, pick something from the current trends that suit your size, your style, your age and add it to your outfits that you already know suit you and that you feel comfortable in.

So as I always say when it comes to fashion ....HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!!!!

Hopefully I will see you soonPenny XBoutique 11, 11 Plains Road,Mapperely NG3 5JH0115 960 2006

Nottingham Centre (National Trust)

Summer Update

Summer is here (at last) – time to get out and about with National Trust Nottingham Centre, a friendly organisation which offers a variety of activities. The winter programme ended on April 25th with a talk by Stuart Bramwell, an indomitable climber, on the mountains of the UK and Europe. His story of our mountain heritage was accompanied by some beautiful and dramatic photographs. Talks will start again in September. The summer months are packed with other activities – excursions to places as far afield as Sandringham and Beverley, Yorkshire, a selection of walks, and holidays in Kent and London. The Local and Family History Group offers its own extensive programme to such places as Nottingham Park Estate, and the 14th century Grantham House (a National Trust property). Some trips are shared with the Garden Interest Group, such as the visit to the St.Ann’s Allotments. The Gardeners are also off to the RHS Gardens at Harlow Carr, near Harrogate, one of the highlights of their summer programme. As an organisation affiliated to National Trust, the Nottingham Centre gives money annually towards amenities at Trust properties and the acquisition of new ones. Members were delighted to learn recently that the Trust has acquired Stoneywell, an Arts and Crafts style house near Bradgate Park in Leicestershire, and hope to visit it soon.To join the Nottingham Centre the fee is currently £5 and £4 for additional family members, but you must be a member of National Trust. For more information contact the membership secretary Mrs. Heather Brooks, tel. 0115 9436272, email:[email protected] or the Nottingham Centre website:www.nottinghamnt.co.uk

A young mum is looking for a home - could that be with you? Affectionate Millie, aged two to three years old, with her kittens Kate, Wills and Harry are currently in Animal Accident Rescue Unit’s care. Whilst Millie is an attentive mum, she is ready for her own real home – as will her kittens eventually.

As usual, all will be neutered, microchipped and tested for Felv/FIV before rehoming; Millie has already been tested as negative, is litter-trained, flea and worm treated. To discover more about her, and the charity’s other loving homeless animals, visit them at www.aaru.org.uk, or contact via [email protected], 0115-9205172 (cats) after 6.30pm or 07946-545256 (dogs). All homes are checked pre-adoption.

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is volunteer-run with a membership scheme, with more of each always welcome.

To join or donate to help, email as above or call 01636 815345; all other calls to the charity must be on 0115-9321555.

John Palmer is a wills and probate executive at QualitySolicitors Yates & Co

will have peace of mind in knowing that these tasks will be undertaken by someone of your choosing.

If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, your husband, wife, children or other relatives may face long delays and considerable expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your finances.

Local firm QualitySolicitors Yates & Co have introduced a scheme to encourage local people to plan ahead by considering setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Concerned by the general lack of awareness of this issue, we have put together a very special offer to help people with the documents and the complete registration process.

Present this advert to claim a full £50* discount against our usual costs.

Lasting Power of Attorney is not just for the elderly. We know that we should write a will, but few people are aware that they should also consider a Lasting Power of Attorney.

People sometimes take it for granted that they will be able to look after their own every day affairs and make decisions for themselves. Sadly the ability to do this often decreases as we grow older.

This could be for a number of reasons such as an accident, physical illness or the onset of a metal illness; all of which could result in you having difficulties in managing your day to day affairs. Lasting Powers of Attorney are designed to be recognised by banks, financial institutions, care homes and local authorities as well as tax and pensions authorities.

Although this is something that we do not like to think about, these difficulties can be overcome by the preparation of one document, a Lasting Power of Attorney. It is a serious and powerful document about which you will want straightforward and down to earth legal advice.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives someone you trust, usually a relative or friend, the power and legal authority to act on your behalf in the event that you aren’t able to do so for yourself. There are safeguards to make sure your wishes are carried out and you

QualitySolicitors Yates & Co is authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, no. 56526.*(not available in conjunction with any other offers)
