Reporting children’s progress

For junior children (Titiwai and Korekoreko and some Kōtiri, Hahana), some of your children will be due either a mid-way (progress) or end-of-year report against national standards. Teachers will let you know when your child’s reports are due. See the attached information sheet that explains how the reporting against national standards works in our school.

All years 4–6 children in Kōtiri, Hahana and Mahuika will receive a mid-year report.

Sports round-up

Not a lot of sport went ahead last weekend—only the poor old Ngāti Toa Stick Ninjas who were winning 3-0 against Plimmerton when the game was abandoned. Well done little Ninjas!

Playgroup—Wednesdays 9:00–10:45 a.m.

Drop in to our informal playgroup for whanau and friends at 9.30am on a Wednesday in Room 7. You are welcome to bring your toddlers and babies.

Fruit cutters

If you can spare half an hour or so around 8:45 on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning, we are short of a couple of people to cut up the fruit for the children. This is a nice way to contribute to the school and get to know some other people. Leave a message in the office if you are interested.

School donations

School donations are due and are welcomed at any time during the year. They are $25 per child or $40 per family. These donations are a great help to us, covering extra things like subsidising buses for trips, extra-curricular activity e.g. Stepping Out. Please send these along when you are able or deposit in the school’s account: 01-0546-0124048-00 with reference ‘Donation family name’ e.g. ‘Donation Brunton’.

Reporting process explained

Report time is coming up so we would like to share some information with you that will help to explain what you will see nearer the end of term. We are required to report in writing to you twice a year on your child’s progress in relation to National Standards. We teach to the New Zealand Curriculum which has a progression of levels that children work through on their learning journey through formal schooling. The table below illustrates how the New Zealand Curriculum levels align with year groups and where National Standards levels fit.

You will notice in the report you receive when you come to meet your child’s teacher/s, that there is a focus on reading, writing and mathematics. Without a strong foundation in these core areas, children are likely to have difficulty accessing other learning areas (such as science, social sciences, technology, the arts, health and physical education). Having this foundation broadens the curriculum for our students, as they are better able to learn in these areas.

An achievement or final overall teacher judgement (OTJ) is made when a child has had a full year working at a particular level.

An OTJ comprises a range of evidence selected by the child and teacher, which should include standardised testing results, examples of student’s work and evidence from their everyday teaching and learning programme, and shows how they are applying their literacy and numeracy skills in all subjects.

An interim judgement is made during the year in which children are moving towards a standard. This is to let you know how the child is progressing towards the relevant standard. This is very straightforward for Years 4–6 as the judgements are made mid-year (interim) and end-of-year (final or achievement).

For Years 1–3, because children start school at different times throughout the year, final or achievement OTJ reporting is done After 1 Year (or 40 weeks), After 2 Years (80 weeks) and After 3 Years (120 weeks). The interim judgement is made half way between standards. That means some children might have their reporting in terms 1 and 3, others in terms 2 and 4. We will let you know when your child is due for these judgements.

In this round of reporting, all Year 4–6 students will receive an interim judgement as will some Year 1–3 students. This report will tell you how your child is progressing towards achieving that standard in about six months time. They still have six months of intensive teaching and learning time to aspire to the relevant standard.

Some Years 1–3 children will be coming up to their final or achievement OTJ for either After 1, After 2 or After 3 Years at school. If your Year 1–3 child does not receive a report this term, they will in term three.

The key in the report form looks like this:

A tick in the green box aligned to their age standard, tells you that the child is achieving at that standard.

A tick in the white box below the green box tells you that with a conscientious effort and effective teaching, the child should achieve the standard by the end of the year (for interim), or they need more work if they are having a final OTJ.

A tick in the pink area is telling you that additional intensive support is required to meet that standard (for interim), or that your child is working well below the standard (and more aligned to the standard two

years below their current age level) for their year level if it is a final or achievement OTJ.

There will be information on the report about your child’s strengths—the things they are doing well in relation to the curriculum expectations at their level; the next steps needed to assist them to move closer to the standard, and some suggestions of how you can support us by following up at home.

It takes a concerted effort by the child, their whanau and the school to see children achieving well. We really value all that you do at home to support your children’s learning. Working together with the school gives them the best opportunity to achieve well. School alone, will not see enough progress for children who are not at the standard to get there. So please come along and talk with your children’s teachers to see how we can work together in the best interests of the children.

We hope you find this information useful. Please do not hesitate to ask there is anything you are puzzled or concerned about.
