Nasogastric Feeding( Gastric Gavage)

Inserting NGT1. Inform patient and explain the

purpose of the procedure

2. Place in High Fowler's position

8. Assess the tube placement and patency

1. Introduce 5-20 ml of air into NGT and auscultate at the epigastric area, gurgling sound is heard.

2. Aspirate the gastric content, which is yellowish or greenish in color

3. Immerse tip of the tube in water, no bubble should be produced

4. Measure the pH of aspirate fluid which should be acidic.

5. Ask the client to speak or hum6. Observe the client for coughing and choking7. MOST EFFECTIVE METHOD IS RADIOGRAPHIC

Administering tube feeding

1. Assist the client to a fowler’s position in bed or sitting position in a chair , or slightly elevated right side lying position.

2. Assess tube placement patency

3. Assess residual feeding content1. To assess absorption of the last feeding. If 50 ml or

more verify if the feeding will be given

4. Introduce feeding slowly.1. To prevent flatulence, crampy, pain or reflex

vomiting
