〜に 行きます vs. 〜て 来ますい　 き

As mentioned before, “～に 行きます” expresses the idea of

“going to do something”.!Say one of your colleague tells you “I will go to eat lunch.” as;

昼ごはんを 食べに 行きます。ひる た い　

However, would you be able to guarantee that the colleague will be

back to the office because this person never mentions to come

back in the above statement.

昼ごはんを 食べに 行きます。ひる た い　

I’ll go to eat lunch. I’m full now.Well then,,,,

Where has she gone?

There’s no guarantee that the speaker will be back to where he/she makes this statement.

昼ごはんを 食べて 来ます。ひる た き

There’s another expression to express the idea of going to do

something then coming back;

I’ll go to eat lunch. I’ll come (back from where I eat).+

Did you notice that the above format is what we learned as

“sequence of actions” in Book 1, connecting multiple actions by “te-

form”.

昼ごはんを 食べて 来ます。ひる た き

I’ll go to eat lunch,then I’ll come back.

I’m full now.Well then, I’ll be back to my work

Now there’s a guarantee that the speaker will be back to where he/she makes this statement.

Drill : Describe each illustration in the next page by using “～に 行きます” as

non-guaranteed pattern and “～て 来ます” as guaranteed pattern.
