2014 Golden Ticket - $50 Buy a Golden Ticket for 2014 and your event fees are covered

(Ordeals, Rendezvous, Section Conclave), plus a distinctive patch.

Golden Ticket does not include transportation. (Ask your troop leader

for that!) Save big with the Golden Ticket!

Wanted: Communications Team Members

NST has youth positions for the lodge. If you are interested in becoming more active, contact the LEC

on page 14 to fill a chair or vice-chief position. Chair positions including communications, ceremonies,

high adventure, service, facilities, and a cook team are all open and available if interested.

OA TROOP REPS AND ADVISERS

All Troops with Arrowmen should have a youth OA Troop Representative.

The OA Troop Representative Adviser (Assistant Scoutmaster Designee) is a new,

official BSA adult position of responsibility that has been created. Its purpose is to create

the role for an adult to guide the youth TR and be a ‘voice of the Order’ at the adult level

in the troop structure.

If you don’t know who your OA Troop Rep is,

chances are your troop may not have one.

Ask your Scoutmaster and have him submit the form detailing your contact

information. The ELECTION/Troop REP form is even available

online, to make it easier and less painless.

By submitting the form, we’ll get you a Troop Rep/Adviser

patch, FOR FREE… limit 1 per troop per year. Plus, each troop needs an adult Arrowman as Troop Rep Adviser on the Troop Committee. If you have any questions, just ask: [email protected]

Elangomats Needed

At each Ordeal, Arrowmen (Elangomats) repeat the trials of the Ordeal again to act as leaders

and guides to the candidates that are going through the Ordeal for the first time. Any Arrowman who

serves as an Elangomat has the opportunity to earn a unique Ni-Sanak-Tani glow-in-the-dark ghost

patch for their service. Don’t wish to repeat the Ordeal? We are always looking for more Arrowmen to

help run the ordeal for the weekend at a minimal cost of $10 for food.

Check out our website and Facebook page!

Upcoming Events Some places you'll see sashes around Council events coming up... and could use you.

Nipachton Ordeal at Camp Decorah: June 6-8

NST’s first big event in the summer! Come help us out at the Ordeal or even be an Elangomat (Highly Encouraged!). Those who participate in the Elangomat ceremony will receive and unique and

distinguishing ghost patch, and it can be found at bit.ly/nstelangomat. You can also sign up and find further

information online. Check-in is between 6-7 pm, on Friday June 6th.

Wuliechenummen Ordeal at Camp Decorah: July 18-20 Also coming up at Camp Decorah is our Wuliechenummen Ordeal during the middle of July. Like the Nipachton Ordeal, you can participate as part of the ceremonies team if interested, or go through the ceremony as an elangomat, which will bring along experiences and new outlooks. Those who participate in the Elangomat ceremony will

receive and unique and distinguishing ghost patch, and it can be found at bit.ly/nstelangomat.

Fall Rendezvous at Camp Decorah: August 1-3

Wish you could spend your summer in a Hobbit

hole? Or rather do you like going on journeys and

adventures? Our Hobbit-themed fellowship event, the

Fall Rendezvous, is August 1-3 at Camp Decorah this

summer. We will be doing some adventuring of our

own, including a “camp quest”, capture the flag, nerf

sword fights, tomahawk and knife throwing, and a

viewing of the movie The Hobbit. Lodge elections

are Saturday evening, and are FREE (food included!)

for any lodge member regardless of attendance to the

Rendezvous. Anyone interested in running for Lodge

Chief must send a letter stating their intentions and plans for their term as lodge chief to Scout Executive

Sean Henneman by Friday, July 25.

Chiefly Speaking

This summer, Ni-Sanak-Tani has a couple of great opportunities for Arrowmen! Every Arrowmen who is elected in 2014 is able to complete their Ordeal during one of our two opportunities as a lodge. The Nipachton Ordeal was June 7-9 and the Wuliechenummen Ordeal is July 18-20 at Camp Decorah. NST needs Elangomats, or Arrowmen who repeat the trials of the Ordeal over again to act as a leader and guide to the Ordeal candidates going through the Ordeal for the first time. Any Arrowmen who act as an Elangomat have the opportunity to earn a Ni-Sanak-Tani glow-in-the-dark ghost patch for their service. Going to Camp Decorah for summer camp? There is a special opportunity for all Arrowmen this summer; the Order of the Arrow Ice Cream Social is at 9 pm on Tuesday night at camp. Heard of ArrowPower 2014? This is a great regional event that you can attend this summer! It is coming up August 17-23. Look on Page 7 for more information about this service event on the Namekagon and St. Croix Rivers. Lodge Elections – August 2

Camp Decorah

Coming up Saturday, August 2 during the Fall Rendezvous at Camp Decorah are Ni-Sanak-Tani’s lodge elections. With free snacks and food, not only will you have a blast and meet some new people, but you will also vote for our lodge’s important positions, including Lodge Chief and Vice-Chiefs of Administration, Program, Inductions, and Finance. Even if you are not attending the Rendezvous, admission to the elections is free to all members who are current with their dues.

Prepare to make a journey to Camp Decorah to fulfill all of your adventuring needs!

Section Conclave – September 12-14,

Bear Paw Scout Camp

Our 2014 Conclave will be September 12-14, hosted by the newly formed Kon Wapos Lodge of Bay Lakes Council at Bear Paw Scout Camp. We will also be hosting Arrowpower2014, a weeklong service project co-hosted by sections C-1A, C-1B and C-3A. We encourage interested servant leaders to find out more at arrowpower.sectionc1b.org. We are excited to see how we can build on last year’s successful program and look forward to our Order’s 100th Anniversary!

Upcoming Sectional, Regional, & National Events

When you ask someone what they think of when you say “Central Region event,” they might mention

National Leadership Seminar, National Lodge Adviser Training, and possibly the Section Officer

Seminar. In recent years, this has been the standard for what the Central Region offers, but in August

2014, a new and exciting event appears on the calendar. Around the same time of year, a weeklong

service event has its second appearance and is set to take place along the St. Croix and Namekagon

Rivers. August 2014, is looking to be a busy month for the Central Region, with something for just

about everyone. ArrowPower2014 will begin its week of service in western Wisconsin.

Three years later and in a different location,

ArrowPower is laying the second milestone of its

history with ArrowPower2014, a week of service

with a focus on large-scale improvements on the St.

Croix National Scenic Riverway. Participants will be

trained in the ways of trail building, invasive

species removal, surveying, campsite restoration,

and many other useful skills they will put to use

during the week. Although the days are long,

recreation has not been forgotten and opportunities

will be available for Arrowmen to enjoy the features

of the local area. These opportunities haven’t been

confirmed yet, but could include tubing, rafting,

kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, a Wisconsin

Dells water park trip, sailing on Lake Superior,

and/or horseback riding. The dates for

ArrowPower2014 are August 17-23 and the cost is set at $225 with a $100 deposit due at the time of

registration.

ArrowPower2014 is open to all registered BSA members, including Venturers, who are at least 14 and

meet the high adventure medical standards. This is looking like it will be a great opportunity to leave a

lasting mark on an area of land that will be used for centuries to come, and will be a fantastic experience

for those who make the short journey to western Wisconsin. ArrowPower2014 will include a strong tie

with the principles of the Order of the Arrow. It will be a great events that will be true to the ideas of

leadership, cheerful service, and brotherhood and will leave their participants with friends, skills, and

time! The registration fee is $475, not including transportation fees.

More about ArrowPower 2014

Interested in spending a week on the Namekagon

and St. Croix rivers? Enjoy giving service back to

the community by rebuilding damaged campsites

and constructing trails? If so, then ArrowPower is a

great event for you! On the Namekagon and St.

Croix riverways, and with headquarters at Camp

Phillips (with all the basic accommodations that

come with a summer camp), there will be 500

Arrowmen participants from Sections C-1A, C-1B,

and C-3A.

Worried it will be all work? There is a full day of

recreation during the middle of the event. Enjoy hiking,

canoeing, kayaking, a trip to a local museum, or a trip

to the Wisconsin Dells. The cost is $225 for the five-

day event. Or, $165 for a three-day version, departing

on Thursday.

National Leadership Seminar

NLS is October 10 through October 12 at Camp Lake, Wisconsin. For the first time in over five years, Wisconsin is hosting a National Leadership Seminar!! As one of the Central Region’s training session, this is a great opportunity to attend! The seminar is an intensive experience in learning about the nature of leadership and practicing some of the skills that a leader uses. While it is designed to be fun, the course

challenges participants intellectually as well. Participants should be mentally and physically prepared to actively engage in an exhausting, invigorating weekend. The weekend format is designed to complement the longer, more detailed Wood Badge and NYLT. The training is not intended for Arrowmen younger than 15, although there is no age requirement to attend. The cost for the entire weekend is $175 for youth, but NST will pay $100 of that, reducing the cost to $75. This includes lodging for two nights, cracker barrels, meals from Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch, seminar handouts, a certificate, and seminar recognition.

For more information and to sign up, go to central.oa-bsa.org/training/nls/

Ceremony and Dance Teams NST needs people for our ceremony and dance teams. There are speaking parts, torchbearers, and drummers for a typical ceremony. An active lodge typically has 12-15 members of each ceremony (Call Out, Ordeal, Brotherhood), but Ni-Sanak-Tani rarely can find more than 4-6 that are interested. NST is looking for leadership and participants for our dance team. Between 12 and 24 Arrowmen used to dance at the camp closing campfires, but that was 20 years back. Dances are used competitively at NOAC and other OA gatherings. Dance and Ceremony teams have the ability to get special ghost patches that you cannot receive by just being in our lodge.

We’re looking for more ceremonialists for Call-Out, Ordeal, Brotherhood, and Cub

Crossovers. Ready to sign up, or want more information, look on Page 13 to contact one

of the Lodge Executive Committee.

Check out the Central Region website and their quarterly publication, the Mighty Leader, at their

website, central.oa-bsa.org. Their fall edition is now out, with updates on the National Jamboree and

info on regional and national programs, including the American Indian Seminar and OA High

Adventure. This is an excellent source of finding out what other Arrowmen have done in your region,

and big events you can be in.

National also has a publication on their website called the National Bulletin. They have both 2013

Jamboree and summer editions. They feature information on Project 2013 at Jambo, a recap of NOAC

2012, a NOAC 2015 teaser, OA High Adventure, National Leadership Seminar, and much more. Check

it out at oa-bsa.org/bulletin.

Order of the Arrow High Adventure Brothers,

Imagine all those skills that you’ve learned since

becoming a Scout being put to the test. Knot-tying, fire-starting,

orienteering, and leadership skills all being used in a real life

situation, a new adventure that may put you out of your

comfort zone, these skills being the only sure-fire assets that

you have. High Adventure is a culmination of Scouting’s best

taught lessons, as well as brand new experiences and

locations, all wrapped into one epic journey.

The skills that Scouting teaches us may sometimes

seem useless in our world today, with all of our modern-day

advantages. A high adventure activity is a magnificent way to

utilize these skills the way they were meant to be used. The Boy Scouts of America has

four National High Adventure Bases – Philmont Scout Ranch in the high desert of the

Sangre Cristo region of New Mexico, Northern Tier in the Boundary Waters of northern

Minnesota, and Florida Sea Base in the warm waters of the Florida Keys, and a brand new

experience in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States at the Summit Bechtel

Reserve – and each offers its own unique challenges and experiences. Whether it’s in the

mountains, on the lakes, on portage trails, or in the vast ocean, OA High Adventure has a

place for you!

The Order of the Arrow makes use of these amazing regions of our country through

the Order of the Arrow High Adventure program. Unlike any other crew that would visit our

national bases, the OA takes advantage of an opportunity to give back to these great

places. Infusing the values of our Order – Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service – an OA

High Adventure is a one of a kind experience, not to be found in any other program. Each

base has a program that is exclusive to itself.

At Philmont, the Order of the Arrow Trail Crew (OATC) is the name of the game.

Helping to construct new trail or to maintain some of Philmont’s many miles of

established trail is very rewarding work in the first half of this two-week adventure. Giving

back to an area rich in Scouting history is just the beginning, as the second week allows

you and your crew to explore the beautiful Philmont Scout Ranch on a personally

customized trek made by none other than you and your crew! Whether you’re hiking to the

top of Mount Baldy, Philmont’s highest peak, watching the sunrise from the Tooth of Time,

or visiting staff camps and participating in the many activities that they have to offer,

Philmont will grab your attention and have you wanting more!

Next, in the lakes of northern Minnesota, along the border of the United States and

Canada, there are two possibilities for adventure-seekers. The Order of the Arrow

Wilderness Voyage (OAWV) and the Order of the Arrow Canadian Odyssey (OACO) await! In

the United States’ Boundary Waters Canoeing Area Wilderness and Canada’s Quetico

Provincial Park, these adventures allow access into the many lakes and portages of the

Page 11: Ni-Sanak-Tani Lodge #381 - gacbsa.org · July, 2014 Volume 19, Issue 3 Page 2 Stay updated on all upcoming Ni-Sanak-Tani events and information. Go to NST”s website at ni-sanak-tani.org

Page 11

area, once traveled by the brave fur-trading voyageurs. Rich in history and beauty, the

Boundary Waters offers participants the opportunity to maintain hundred-year-old portage

trail for this publicly accessible area. Another two-week experience, the first half is spent

giving back to the area while the second is spent traveling the lakes via canoe en route

back to base in a self-made itinerary. An unforgettable experience is guaranteed!

Our third national High Adventure base resides in the lovely Florida Keys, home of

the Order of the Arrow Ocean Adventure (OAOA). Sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico

and the Atlantic Ocean, this string of islands off the southern tip of Florida houses an

ecosystem unlike any other in the United States. Tropical, beautiful, and exotic are just a

few describing words for this area. With beautiful sunsets over the sea and sailboats

almost constantly set against a panoramic view, who wouldn’t want to visit? Scouting’s

own Big Munson Island offers an opportunity for service, as well a taste of “island-life,” on

this eight day trip. A changing program will keep participants guessing as what lies in

store for them on the adventurous portion of this journey, but with possibilities such as

sailing aboard a sailboat, snorkeling, or scuba-diving, who wouldn’t want to spend eight

days like this?

Brand new this year is the OA’s newest High Adventure program, the Order of the

Arrow Summit Experience. Residing in the Appalachian mountains and valleys of West

Virginia, the Summit Bechtel Reserve is Scouting’s fourth and newest High Adventure

base. The recent host to the National Jamboree 2013, the Summit has more activities

than one knows what to do with! Whether you want to get a bird’s eye view by using the

zip lines, go mountain biking, canoe or kayak at the waterfront, climb and rappel, or white

water raft at the nearby New River Gorge National River, there will be plenty to do! This

new ten day program will offer a chance for Arrowmen to give their services to the Summit

and surrounding areas of West Virginia, followed by a trek week where the Summit is your

playground. What is unique to this program is that it is open to Arrowmen who are 14 but

not yet 18 years of age. Younger Arrowmen, here’s your chance to experience the OA’s

finest!

Being a member of the Order of the Arrow opens up many grand opportunities. The

OA High Adventure program opens up the grandest of them all. Meeting fellow Arrowmen

from across the country, with the goal of service and adventure in mind, making lifelong

friends and memories, as well as giving back to the region that you’re visiting is an

opportunity too great to pass up. So what are you waiting for? Log on to adventure.oa-

bsa.org for complete details and sign-up forms! Being a participant of OATC, OAWV, and

OAOA are truly worth every bit of what you put into them. This is the

epitome of Scouting. This is what it’s all about! I encourage each

and every one of you to look into these amazing programs and

participate if at all possible.

In adventure,

Dan Rogan

Brotherhood – Why SEAL my membership?

How do you prepare for Brotherhood? By coming to Lodge, Section, and National events, and stay involved. Brotherhood membership in the Order of the Arrow is not a rank or a step up the ladder in the same sense as that of First Class Scout to Star, Life, and Eagle Scout.

Brotherhood membership is the completion of the induction process of becoming a true Arrowman. Brotherhood members

have no special privileges that are not open to Ordeal members, except to attend Brotherhood ceremonies and showing your pride in the Order of the Arrow through those two bars. You’ll have a chance to complete your Brotherhood during Summer Camp or the Rendezvous in August…

To be eligible for Brotherhood, you need to have been an Ordeal Arrowman for 10 months, and express interest in sealing your membership through learning the Obligation, Admonition, Song, Handclasp, and write a brief letter. Check out Jumpstart on the NST web page, for assistance in learning all this “stuff”. Practice them… by coming to events or meetings.

New OA members, visit http://jumpstart.oa-bsa.org/.
