Remembering 70 YearsIn 2017-18 the NSO celebrated its milestone 70th anniversary season. Through anecdotes, photos and print articles, the orchestra recognized seven decades of growth from a community orchestra, expansion across the Niagara Region, and a triumphant move to our new home in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre in 2015. Research in local archives resulted in a photo retrospective mounted by the City of St. Catharines, and NSO history was documented on a national platform, the Virtual Museum of Canada.

    Report from the Board Chair

When I first joined the Board of the NSO, we were finishing our final season at the Sean O’Sullivan Theatre and preparing for the big move into the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre. Sitting at Brock University, listening to the final concerts at the old venue, I couldn’t help but think

how fantastic the orchestra would sound in the new hall.

From that first concert in Cairns Hall, it was clear that the NSO was ready to “take it to 11”. All of the hard work preparing for the move and executing the move had paid off. Hearing the orchestra in the new hall has been even more fantastic than I had imagined it, and it has also been fantastic to see the artistic growth that has come along with our new home.

Now that the reigns have been handed over to me, I look around and see the same passion and the same commitment that drew me to the organization three years ago. The next challenge will be to not only sustain our current level of success, but to build on this success, and to win the next race. Whether it be those in the office, those at the Board table, or those on stage we have the pieces we need to take the next step. I am excited to continue to work with this group and looking forward to what we can accomplish next.

    Report from the Executive Director

Luck never comes to those who sit on the sidelines. If you’re floundering and don’t have a clear vision of the road ahead, you are not giving luck much of a chance! Opportunity comes from planning. Success comes from

action. And 70 years later, be it luck, or be it lore, the Niagara Symphony Orchestra has become one of the finest regional orchestras committed to excellence on the concert stage and engagement in the community.

Our 70th anniversary brought many highs and was our fifth year in the black. The long-awaited collective agreement with the AFOM was finalized in August and our musicians realized an unprecedented increase of 16.5%, year one. We received a leadership gift from our dear friend Norris Walker, to produce the N. Walker Chamber Orchestra Series in Cairns Hall. We’re eternally thankful to Carol and David Appel for their 5-year commitment to support Guest Artists and Orchestra Development. And our dear friend Val Fleming, who turned 90 this year, celebrated our Face to Face fundraising event with her many family and friends. CIBC as Season Sponsor, and Title Sponsors RBC, Performance Lexus, and Ridley College all contributed to the small surplus.

Our 70th also brought a few challenges. The Canada Council’s jarring freeze had significant impact on plans, and planned dollars. Rather than ‘dream-big and think long-term’, the NSO, like so many, was forced to seek ways to stabilize the present while diversifying revenues for the next two years. Thankfully our highs outweighed our lows!

To the legions of people who have come before, thank you for helping us reach 70. To our many patrons, donors, volunteers and corporate and community partners, your support, generosity and dedication to this orchestra is beyond measure.

To the Board, both past and present, thank you for your overwhelming support, but more importantly, for your trust. To Brad, and our Ensemble, congratulations on becoming the success story that we are. To my staff, who play so well together in the sandbox, thank you for influencing my life!

    Candice Turner-Smith, Executive Director

    Report from the Music Director

It is with great pride that I reflect upon the Niagara Symphony Orchestra’s 70th concert season. We achieved many artistic peaks, and unique in this season, those successes were achieved both on and off stage. The securing of a

new Master Agreement between the Players and the Association have ushered us into a new era of stability which also, with the significant wage increase, allows us to attract a higher quality of applicant for both positions in the NSO, and as extra substitute players.

This added quality showed itself on stage time and time again as the orchestra and I further develop our ability to communicate and understand each other. The flexibility of the ensemble, both in its abilities to quickly assimilate different styles from concert to concert and to allow free interpretation, has been personally a joy for me. We are moving forward every year as an increasingly honed ensemble. The orchestra I found on arrival would not have been able to so impressively tackle repertoire such as Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra, Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, let alone perform TWO Sibelius Symphonies in one concert. For an orchestra at any level this is a gargantuan task, but the preparation and enthusiasm for every challenge is what constantly inspires me as an artist with this fine orchestra.

Our future looks bright as we now fill empty chairs with excellent players and I look forward to another challenging season I know the orchestra will embrace.

NSO programmes share a common goal; of course they educate, excite, inspire, and challenge - but the key is to delight. SMC, Spotlight On!, Youth Club and Classical Family concerts prove how much fun orchestral music is; the NSO was part of Walker Family Cancer Clinic’s Arts in Medicine initiatives, and we awarded the inaugural Paul van Dongen Award for Excellence in Music Education. Through the NSO’s education and outreach programming, gifted musicians and dedicated educators shared the joy of music, delighting thousands.

As my first year as Treasurer, I am so impressed by the quality of the music and all that goes on behind the scenes to provide the extraordinary season of performances we have witnessed this past year. We continue to have good financial results, and I look forward to another season of great programming and performances. As a not-for-profit organization, we are always looking for new ways to raise the funds necessary to maintain and grow our ability to provide the orchestral excellence our audience is expecting. I would like to give a special thanks to our talented musicians, our dedicated office staff, my fellow Board members, and to our patrons who continue to support our organization and give us reason to continually look for new ways to entertain and provide the highest quality symphony experience.
