An Experiential Approach

Using the Castellani Art Museum as an on-campus resource, elementary education student Tracey Bayer is taking a hands-on approach to her learning. • With the exception of our nursing students,

about 75 percent of the students who start as a

freshman or transfer student in the College

of Arts & Sciences graduate with a double

major and/or minor.

• Forty-six percent of our recent graduates com-

pleted an internship, co-op or practicum.

• In a recent survey of graduating seniors,

37 percent conducted research with a faculty

member. In the physical sciences, psychology

and nursing, 50 percent conducted research

with a faculty member. Some students

published research with faculty.

• Eighty-seven percent of the graduating

seniors rate the quality of teaching in their

major as “excellent.”

• Students in biology and chemistry use much

of the same equipment in Niagara’s science

laboratories that they’ll find in graduate school

• Over the past two years, A&S faculty gave

and approximately100 articles in professional

journals, some co-authored by students.

A Vincentian tradition of service, responsibility and leadership

St. Vincent de Paul was a 17th century Catholic priest dedicated to serving

the poor and oppressed. The patron saint of charities, St. Vincent was the first

great community organizer, as he inspired and organized his contemporaries to

respond compassionately to society’s basic needs. It is in this Vincentian tradition that

Niagara University seeks to inspire its students to serve others, especially the poor, in

local communities and across the world. Our mission is to shape not just servants, but

servant-leaders, who will then, in the spirit of St. Vincent, go out and make a difference

in their own communities, inspiring others to lead lives of compassion and service.

The faculty, staff and administration of Niagara are also deeply connected to the community, providing count-less hours of service to over 300 organiz-ations in Western New York.

The concept of service is popular across universities today, but Niagara has been a national leader in service learning since the 1950s.

Serving Others

During the past academic year, Niagara students provided over 1,000 hours of

community service per week.They serve as tutors in local school districts, as volunteers

in more than 60 social service organizations, and as part of ReNU Niagara, a

community outreach partnership that coordinates service programs in Niagara Falls.

LEARN AND SERVE NIAGARALearn and Serve Niagara focuses on service learning – service activities that are built into course curricula to help students experience how concepts they are learning in the classroom can be applied to the actual needs of a community. More than 70 classes have a service requirement, and education majors routinely log thousands of hours of volunteer teaching in local schools.

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM (NUCAP)NUCAP organizes a wide variety of activities to aid the local

community. Students invite city youths to skating and swim-ming parties; others volunteer in local nursing homes and soup kitchens. NUCAP is a great resource for student clubs, especially because each one is responsible for conducting a certain number of service hours each semester.

BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN CHRIST (BASIC)BASIC sends busloads of students and campus ministers every semester break to spend a week immersed in fulfilling the university’s Vincentian mission by serving disadvantaged people in poor neighborhoods. They have traveled from Panama to

Philadelphia to New Orleans, working in local schools, at homeless shelters and nursing homes, and anywhere else there is a need.

REV. JOSEPH L. LEVESQUE, C.M. INSTITUTE FOR CIVIC ENGAGEMENT This institute reinforces Niagara’s commitment to the region by strengthening and forming new town and gown relationships. The institute oversees Border Community SERVICE and ReNU Niagara, two of NU’s flagship com-munity-minded programs, and collaborates with Learn and Serve Niagara to create meaningful service-learning opportunities for students.

The Niagara University Purple Eagles field eight men’s and 10 women’s

intercollegiate teams that compete at the NCAA Division I level as a member of
