    Nic Collins: Management Plan

    Executive Summary

Nic Collins filmmaking-whether its on a short film, music video, or an interview-hasbeen excellent. His work has been featured on The Wall Street Journals website, Journeysstores, NBC Short Cut Film Festival, Dragon*Con, Firestarter Film Festival, and MetropolisFilm Festival. Besides directing, Nic can also write, edit, and act for film. This management planwas meant to help set goals for furthering Nics web presence, establishing his brand, promotinghimself as a filmmaker, and getting booked for paying filmmaking jobs. Managers Bob Reisigand Tim Harnew set many goals for the last 3 months, and these are the ones that werecompleted: create Nics personal website (domain namewww.niccollins.combought, site isunder construction); create Nics business card; create Nics Talent Pool account; Help Niccreate his reel; hire a graphic designer (Emily Tobin) to create a logo for Nic; Hire aphotographer (Ben Fout) to take promotional photos; upgrade Nics IMDB profile; and help Nic

book and negotiate film jobs (ComPsych Corporation, Katz Company). Managements goals forNics future are to: promote the release of Nics short film,Nightmare, when it is released;continue to book Nic for film jobs that pay and have better notoriety; obtain agencyrepresentation for Nic. Since September, Nics new management has completed a lot of greatthings for his career, and now hopes to sign a management agreement with Nic so they cancontinue to help his career, and theirs as well.

    Introduction

Managers Bob Reisig and Tim Harnew represent director, writer, editor, and actor NicCollins. As of right now, Bob and Tim are only working as freelance because this is their firstexperience as managers, and it is unsure if they want to pursue managing as a career at this point.Nic is a director from Chicago, IL, who has mostly worked on music videos and short films, buthopes to some day make his way into feature films. Most of Nics work so far has been done probono, so what hed like to have happen through management is obtain more paying film jobs.

Hed also like more high profile projects, as in for a big production company (Fox, NBCUniversal, etc.). Management has also set goals to increase Nics capability of marketing andnetworking with goals like creating a website and business card. Through this plan, Bob and Timhope to gain experience as managers, sign a management agreement with Nic, and help establishtools that will help Nics career in the long run.

    Artist Vision Statement

Nic Collins vision is to become a successful film director in Hollywood making full-length feature films.

    Industry Overview

Although the movie/film industry has suffered the in the past few years, it looks asthough it is finally starting to make a comeback. According to Plunkett Research, 2010 hadstrong numbers for the U.S. box office, and other entertainment industries seen improvement inconsumer spending. Analysts credit this to new forms of entertainment technology that have hadconsumers buzzing. Devices such as Ipads, Ebooks, and even Kinect for video games haveopened another door for the entertainment industry to connect with its consumers. The digitaltechnology is something that must be utilized by the Movie/Film industry.

An estimated 100 million homes and businesses have broadband internet connections, notto mention 75 million people are mobile Internet subscribers. In 2010 there were 293 million cellphone subscriptions in the U.S. and more than 5 billion worldwide. People want to be able to gettheir entertainment whenever they want and wherever they want. You can now watch moviesfrom your cell phone while youre on the train or waiting at the doctors office. Netflix and Hulu

are now what movie stores used to be.

3D Movies should also be mentioned; people will pay more money to go see a movie in3D. Many movie theaters already have 3D capable screens but televisions are now starting tobecome 3D enabled as well. All this new technology can be utilized to connect with consumersand raise profits for companies in the industry.

Filmmakers like Nic need to take into account it may be a better option to release a movie

online or through any digital media outlet since they are starting to become the new trend.Making a movie in 3D is also a good way to produce more revenue since consumers are willingto spend extra money to see a 3D film.

    Booking Log

Management has pursued film jobs for Nic through different venues of work and projects. The main goal within booking was to get a paying job, so no prospective employees wereapproached offering pro bono work. Also, some of the paying jobs that management contacted

were not in interest to Nic because of the nature of the job. The first job possibility thatmanagement was given from Chris Badowski, a web content specialist. It was a producing job,and the employer was seeking someone who also had a journalism degree, so it made no sense toget Nic a job as a role he wouldnt want and wasnt qualified for.

Management also contact various film and video companies (JKS Productions, Manning

Productions, Video One Productions, 222 Films) but received no response. Other peoplecontacted, with no response, were Cindy Harris Kuhn (VP of Marketing at ComPsychCorporation) and Something In Construction (small record label in Chicago).

The contacts that management had the most success with booking were another employeeat ComPsych Corporation (Anita Madison, VP of Training and Consulting), artist KatzCompanys management (Kelly McCormick), and DJ Sean Mac (worked with Nic before on

short film City Of Angels). Management is currently in talks/negotiations to book Nic witheach of these contacts, and is hoping to secure employment soon.

A new strategy is being devised for booking by contacting more record companies andfilm companies, to reach out to Nics current strengths and his future goals.

For booking log, see: Appendix D

    Artist Branding

The following logo was made by Emily Tobin, a graphic designer hired by management,to help brand the name Nic Collins as a professional filmmaker who will be recognized for hisname and his work.

It was chosen over a few other designs after management determining that it looked themost professional. Emily also created a business card design for Nic, which management thenprinted out copies for him to be able to give out for networking purposes. Nics fellow filmmakerBen Fout was also hired by management to take some promotional photos. These will befeatured on Nics IMDB, his website, and his social networking sites. These tools will continueto be used to help promote Nics name as a successful filmmaker in Chicago.

For other logos created in the process, see: Appendix EFor Nics business card design and promotional photos, see: Appendix F

filmmaker Davy Greenberg). With his experience and his education, Nic Collins has proven that

he has the skills and abilities to produce great film work.

Management has discussed with Nic if he needs any more instruction onfilmmaking, and he feels that he does not require any further classes or lessons. In the future, management would only like to suggest that Nic research the film industry in LA, if that is wherehe really wants to live a year from now. In addition, he is applying to attend Columbia CollegesSemester in LA program in the summer of 2012.

    Press Kit

For anyone who is involved in filmmaking, an IMDB account is not only the personsbio, along with some general information and a photo, but most importantly is a list of any andall projects they have done and all of the work performed on those projects (i.e. directing, producing, acting, etc.). Nic already had an IMDB page prior to his current management, but it

had not been updated in a long time. Management paid for Nic to upgrade his profile so that hecould edit it himself. This is a screenshot of what Nic Collins IMDB page looked like beforemanagement edited it:

Unfortunately, management and Nic could not update the IMDB profile view to theextent that they had wished because IMDB needs to approve everything. In the future, management will look into this further to help his IMDB profile look even better. Here is proofthat the information is on his IMDB resume, waiting for the sites approval:

    Video Reel

In order to book him for jobs, management decided that Nic should make a video reelshowcasing some of his best work. As a director and editor proficient in Final Cut Pro, Nic madehis own reel featuring clips from work hes done on short filmLegacy, short film/promo videofor artist DJ Sean Mac, short filmNightmare, and music video My Days by artist Vic Mensaand Kids These Days. This reel will help promote the great work that Nic can do, and help him

acquire jobs. This is a screenshot of Nic Collins Vimeo page athttp://vimeo.com/niccollins,where his reel can be viewed:

    just on his Vimeo page.

    Booking

Nic Collins is currently in negotiations to be booked on two directing jobs with the helpof his managers:

Directing and editing training/industrial videos for ComPsych Corporation

Management and Nic met with ComPsych Corporation to discuss the nature of thejob, along with compensation and other terms, on November 18th, 2011. ComPsychCorporation seemed excited to work with Nic on the training video project (three 3-5 minute videos), and asked Management to then type up a proposal. A proposalwas turned in November 28th, 2011. ComPsych Corporation then responded throughemail that it would most likely get back to Management after the first of the year, due to end of the year requirements within the company.

Directing and editing a music video for artist Katz Company

Kelly McCormick, one of the managers of Katz Company, approached managementon November 17th, 2011, showing interest to work with Nic for a music video forher client. We gave her Nics quote and waited for a response. Two weeks later, on

scheduling and finance, Katz Company would not be able to immediately work withNic but will contact us again when they are ready to make the video.

    Representation Strategy

Nic aspires to one day go to Hollywood and become a director of feature films. To helpbook him for these jobs, he will need to be represented by a reputable agent. A mock letter hasbeen written, for when the time comes, to send to an agent or agency in LA. Here are 5 agentsthat management researched and found contact information for; management plans on contactingthem in the near future:

Stuart Manashil: Talent Agent, CAA, 1 (424) 288-2000,[email protected]

Jeff Gorin: Talent Agent, WME, 1 (310) 248-2000

Sue Rodgers: Talent Agent, Independent Talent Group, 44 (207) 363-6565

Craig Gering: Talent Agent, CAA, 1 (424) 288-2000,[email protected]

Chris Harbert: Talent Agent, CAA, 1 (424) 288-2000,[email protected]

These talent agents were found using Nics IMDB account and were determined a goodsuit for Nic based on the similar talent that they represent. In an effort to gain representation forNic from one of these agents, managements plan is call-and most likely leave a message with-the agent, and also send a cover letter through email with a link to Nics website so they canview his reel. Callbacks are important as well, to make sure they have received our message andto let them know that management is serious about representation for Nic.

For representation strategy letter, see: Appendix H

    Social Networking Sites/Promotions

Nic utilizes Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr to connect with friends, fans, and viewers ofhis work. He has 559 Facebook friends and 153 Twitter followers as of December 14th, 2011.Nic uses these social networking sites not only for personal uses, but also for the promotions ofhis film work. For example, he recently used all 3 of these venues to promote the release of theteaser trailer for his short film Nightmare on December 11th, 2011. Since posting the Nightmareteaser trailer online, the video has gained 201 views, 3 likes, and one comment. Online socialnetworks have proven useful and successful in the promoting of Nics work and will continue to

be used this way in the future.

    Conclusions

The Film Industry is hard to break into, but Nic is well on his way to becoming a majorplayer. His range of skills and style give him the opportunity of working on any number ofdifferent projects he can find.

His excellent past work with music videos gives him a good selling point for obtainingmore music video jobs, which can become very lucrative. His creative ideas have been portrayedwell through his short films, which garner a lot of good recognition. He also has the option ofdoing other kinds of oddball film work like a PSA, interviews, commercials, etc.

This management plan shows the great experience and ability that Nic Collins has as afilmmaker. His goal now is to obtain proper agent representation to help him get booked formore jobs, and better jobs, as his career progresses. For the purposes of this project, agentrepresentation hasnt been approached, but that is a goal set for management to achieve in the

future. This management plan clearly shows evidence that the opportunities of an agentrepresenting Nic are as great and lucrative as Nics opportunities in his filmmaking career.

From this experience, managers Bob Reisig and Tim Harnew have learned of all of thehardships of managing talent, but have also enjoyed the challenge of pursuing booking andhelping the career of another. They now hope to continue into the future as managers, andthrough this plan executed thus far, they hope to sign a management agreement with Nic andhelp to sign him to a successful agent to take his career to a whole new level of success.
