Nicaraguan culture has several distinct strands

The west of the country was colonized by Spain and has a similar culture to other Spanish-speaking Latin American countries.

The eastern half of the country was once a British protectorate and their culture is similar to that of Caribbean nations that were or are British possessions.

The people of Nicaragua are mostly mestizos, and Spanish is their first language.

Nicaragua has strong folklore, music and religious traditions, deeply influenced by European culture but enriched with Amerindian sounds and flavours.

The west of the country was colonized by Spain and has a similar culture to other Spanish-speaking American countries.

The eastern half of the country, was once a British protectorate. English is still an influence in this region and spoken domestically along with Spanish and indigenous languages.

Its culture is similar to that of Caribbean nations that were or are British possessions, such as Jamaica, Belize, and the Cayman Islands.

• The country's name is derived from Nicarao, the name of the Nahuatl-speaking tribe which inhabited the shores of Lake Nicaragua before the Spanish conquest of the Americas, also the name came from the Spanish word Agua, meaning water.

• It is possible that Nicaragua was inhabited by Paleo-Indians as far back as 6000 years, the ancient footprints of Acahualinca suggest this along with other archaeological evidence.

• At the end of the 15th century, western Nicaragua was inhabited by several indigenous peoples possibly related by culture and language to Indigenous groups from Mexico. They were primarily farmers who lived in towns, however within three decades an estimated one million (of the Indian population) plummeted to a few tens of thousands, as approximately half of the indigenous people in western Nicaragua died of diseases brought by the Spaniards.

• In eastern Nicaragua, a much smaller group of Native Americans that had migrated from Colombia and Panama lived a less sedentary life based on hunting and gathering.

• It would help the country to create better working conditions.

• We have valuable resources that would benefit every country worldwide.

• We can offer honey, chocolate, nuts, oilseeds and coffee. These can be used to create other food and beauty products. For example, cakes, soaps, hair and

skin products etc.
