We have officially been a ‘Good’ school for just over a year, and I am pleased to see the systems of monitoring and supporting our students and staff are firmly established and continue to make an impact. This term we say goodbye to several members of staff who have truly made an impact on the Nicholas Breakspear Catholic Community, many of whom are moving on due to promotion. We especially say farewell to Phil Newbery, Deputy Headteacher. Phil has served this school community since 2001. He has been instrumental in creating an aspirational learning culture which has helped move this school to ‘Good’. He has been a loyal servant to this school community over the last 16 years and we wish him every success. I would also like to acknowledge our supportive parents. Thank you for your support and feedback throughout the year, especially at parents’ evenings, parent surveys and supporting the many social events. It is clear that we are a supportive community and I would particularly like to thank you for your feedback from the parent surveys as this information will be used to help shape our school. As we prepare for the next academic year, Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School admission numbers continue to grow and we will be adding an additional class to Year 7, making the year group 5 form entry. This allows the capacity of this year group to increase to 150. This new class will be called ‘More House’, named after the English saint, Thomas More. We have already welcomed our new families at our most recent transition evening, many of whom have placed NBS as their first choice school, and we look forward to working with them. On Friday 30th June 2017 our school played host to the third Community Mass to which we invited 8 of our closest Catholic feeder schools. Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School is very fortunate to have formed strong relationships with all our feeder schools and this occasion gives us the opportunity to celebrate our common identity. I would like to formally introduce our new Student Leadership Team and wish them every success for the next academic year. These students are a credit to this school with their sense of pride, passion and determination to succeed, and I believe they will be outstanding role models. As we welcome our new students who will be joining this community in September, I would like to wish the current Year 11 and 13 students every success in their most recent public examinations. As students, they have shown great resilience, faith and trust in the school, and I invite you to keep them in your prayers at this time as they wait for these important examination results. I would like to acknowledge the support I have received from the Governing Body, staff, parents and, most importantly, our students. As we approach the end of another successful academic year, the school can once again reflect on a busy and productive year.

It is clear that we are a supportive community and I would particularly like

to thank you for your feedback from the parent surveys as this information will be used to help shape our school.

The General Election came to NBS, with an impressive turnout.

We are delighted to announce that, due to the continued expansion of the school, places have become available to study in our sixth form from September 2017. Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School, in partnership with The John Henry Newman School, is a high achieving sixth

form which offers a wide range of courses. We are also able to offer smaller class sizes which enhances learning and enables students to excel academically.

If you would like the opportunity to achieve your full potential at Level 3 study and enjoy the vast array of enrichment

opportunities that make our school such a wonderful community, whilst being fully prepared for Higher Education or employment, then please contact :

Mr C Laing, Head of Sixth Form Telephone 01727 860079 Email: [email protected]

Whilst the country held a General Election on Thursday 8th June 2017, Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School held its own mock election. All four major parties had candidates standing, and a polling station was located in the school dining hall.On the morning of the election each form group watched a video, giving them information about how general elections work and a summary of the key policies of each major party. Posters were also put up around school giving information about the four candidates. Signs were placed in corridors guiding pupils to the polling station, where a polling booth with black

ballot boxes had been installed. Turnout was high, and the staff and students helping to organise the event were hard pressed to make sure that everyone who wanted to vote was able to do so. The winning candidate was Labour’s Elliott Miller, who won with an impressive 55% of the votes cast – so no recount was needed!A big thank you to all the candidates who stood, those stu-dents in Year 9 who helped with posters and in setting up the polling station, and to you for voting in such large numbers.

Following Edward Bailey and Hannah Cosgrave’s v isit to Auschwitz-Birkenau as a part of the Holocaust Educational Trust, we were proud to welcome Holocaust survivor, Eve Kugler, to speak to our students. Throughout the day, there were workshops being attended by Year 9 students, led by Andrew Morris, an ambassador of the charity. This raised awareness of what life was like for the Jewish people in Germany whilst Adolf Hitler was in power. During the workshop we reflected on how “law is blind”, and it was the same in Germany, until January 1933, when Hitler became Chancellor. Year 9 worked in small groups to sort a number of laws in chronological order and discussed which ones made them sad or angry. The year 9’s spoke about why these laws were introduced, and what was the point of some of them, such as the law saying that Jewish people could not own pets. Hitler truly intended

to take away all that made the German Jews happy. This was a real eye-opener, and it made us see how Hitler dehuman-ised the Jewish people. For those who had the workshop before the survivor testi-mony, it gave a bit of context to what was happening before the war in Germany. Later on, we had a survivor testimony from Eve Kugler, who lived in Germany at the time Hitler came into power. She described her journey through the war, and about how she and her family escaped the Nazi’s grasp. She described her journey through

Europe, and then onto America, where she was finally free. Eve kindly welcomed any questions from the students who had heard her story. There were some fantastic ques-tions, from asking what happened to the rest of her family, to asking what she would forget if she could. Eve answered these amazingly, and it gave each and every student an insight into what life was like at that point in history, and what it was like for survivors of the Holocaust.

She mentioned how hard it is as a sur-vivor and to feel what is called “survi-vors guilt”. This caused her to keep the fact that she was a survivor quiet for a long time. It wasn’t until her mum told her that the world needed to know that she published her book whilst living in America. Now, she lives in London and goes to many schools to spread her story. As a school community, we feel so lucky to have heard from Eve, as we all know that we are the last generation that are able to hear survivor testimonies.

Over 300 students from 8 of our feeder primary schools joined our year 7 students for our 3rd annual Community Mass which explored the theme of ‘You are the light of the world’. It was a beautiful occasion in so many ways. The school hall was decorated with hundreds of flames that our guests pre-pared prior to our celebration. Each one considered the ques-tion: ‘What can I do to be light of the world?’ Some of the deeply thought out answers included:

‘Bring the message of Jesus to those we meet’

‘Use our talents to make the world a better place.’

Fr Norbert helped us to unpack the message of the Gospel by encouraging each of us to share the light and to never under-estimate the impact that we can make in our school, home and the wider community. The year 7 Drama group produced a strong piece of drama that emphasised this message. The music group must also be congratulated on their wonderful contribution to ensuring a liturgy of such a prayerful nature. Two particular highlights stand out, the singing of the Creed and the post communion contribution by Pope Paul School.

Following Mass and a group photo there was an interschool rounders’ tournament, which was a lovely, relaxing end to our day together. Students and staff from all 9 schools repre-sented enjoyed each other’s company. It was a fantastic day and we are already looking forward to next year’s!

I work with and I am so proud of their fantastic abilities. I give up my free time as it is a pleasure to see them develop and improve their skills. I have known the big group since I was four and have grown up with them, they are like a second family. When I see the happy faces that greet me every week it instantly lights up my mood and brings me great comfort and joy. The sessions are a positive experience which helps to focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities. I love that it recognises the successes that they achieve.”

CAT Assessment DaySaturday 17th June saw our new Year 7 cohort visit the school for the CAT Assessment Day. We welcomed over 100 students to the school across two sessions where they spent time solving problems and working with sequences. The students were fantastic and showed a willingness to succeed that will be vital to their progress.

Induction Evening - Tuesday 27th JuneNBS welcomed parents and students of the new Year 7 cohort, who are joining us in September. Each student was welcomed at our main entrance by Mr. Linnane and our Chair of Governors, Ray Anderson. They then met their new form group and form tutor. Meanwhile in the hall, the parents heard from Mr. Linnane, Mr. Anandappa, the Head of Year 7, our Head Boy Stephen Hopkins and our Head Girl Emilia Lavelle. It was an informative evening and one of the many evenings we have that supports our parents.

Year 6 into 7Transition Update

Thomas was a high ranking official to Henry VIII. He had great influence and was one of the most powerful men in England. He earned the reputation as an honest and effective public servant. When Henry decided to go against the wishes of the Pope and divorce his wife and remarry, Thomas felt he could no longer serve the King and resigned. He refused to acknowledge Henry as ‘Supreme’ Head of the Church in England rather than the Pope.

He was charged with high treason, found guilty and put to death. Thomas inspires us to stand up for what we believe to be right, even if it comes at a great cost.

For the first time in nine years we have decided to run the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme within school. We wanted to give our students the opportunity to develop their confidence and knowledge, alongside the ability to work with a vari-ety of people. This is done through the students com-pleting a minimum of 3 months in each of the 3 sec-

tions available, volunteering, physical and skill. Students must choose one of these sections to con-tinue for a further 3 months, totalling 6 months. Students are also required to complete a practice week-end expedition, with two days walking and one night camping in the Chilterns. They are required to carry all of their own kit for the weekend in their rucksacks, whilst taking in the areas of the countryside. Students did incredibly well in their practice

expedition, learning from mistakes and taking on board any information that was given to them. Students had to then com-plete a second weekend, their qualifying expedition, where they

had less support from staff and had to put into practice what they have learnt throughout the year. They

were required to work alongside their peers to

ensure that their route was planned and that they were able to work together.

The students that have worked hard this year to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award Bronze

are: Mia Lawson, Kieran Haberfield, John Doneo, Andrew Laing, Oliwier Beben, Jack Bentley, Rosie Day, Nicole Traore, Holly-Louise Savage, Aimee Midgley, Kofi Wiafe Annor, Hayden Fuller.

Geography Norfolk Field TripWe set off for Norfolk on the Monday morning in the pouring rain, and arrived at the Kingswood Field Study Centre on the north Norfolk coast two hours later where it was still raining! We were given a guided tour of the centre and then we had some time to settle into our rooms. We spent the late afternoon and early evening learning how to gather beach samples and measure them so that we could compare different beaches. For example, we were shown how to use callipers to measure the size of pebbles. We were also given a tutorial on how to measure longshore drift and beach gradient. Our after dinner activity was some-thing called ‘nightline’, where we were-blind-folded and made to crawl around an obstacle course, working as a team so that we could reach the finish without anyone hurting themselves! After a hearty breakfast we set off to visit our different field sites along the

coast. We were slightly anxious because there was cold wind blowing down from the north – it was going to be tough on those beaches! Sure enough, when we got to our first site at Salthouse (which is a small village next to the coast) the wind was blowing a gale right into our faces. We carried out a number of beach measurements (one involved throwing

an apple into the sea) and then moved on to our other sites at Weybourne and Sheringham, where we were able to grab a warm lunch. At West Runton, our final site, we had to abandon our measuring because cold rain started lashing down. Fortunately, we were able to get some ‘slump’ measurements. We then spent most of our final evening at the Kingswood centre writing up our findings and presenting it in graph form, which is important for our Paper 3 exam next year. We ended the evening watch-ing Chelsea beat Southampton on their way to winning the Premier League. On the last day, in the morning, we did the high-line ‘leap of faith’. This involved us all having to climb onto a platform and then leap over to a trapeze – it’s quite daunting if you haven’t done it before! Hamza hated it the most, however Ollie was able to do it all in a little over twenty seconds! Then, after lunch, we set off home for St Albans.

We were fortunate enough during Easter to take a pilgrimage to Lourdes with HCPT, where both the students and adults had an amazing week full of blessings and fun. Throughout the trip there were various opportunities to try new things and explore Lourdes. As part of the service ‘Group 763’, we were allocated different families whom we would support over the course of the trip.Upon arrival in Lourdes we had a full on day of team building, which included a scavenger hunt through Lourdes. The following day we were split into our different groups for a day of fun-filled activities. We were later invited to lead the welcoming at the regional mass, where there was a jubilant and united tone from the outset. There were two main excursions during the trip, which were going to the beach with our family groups and visiting the

mountain in Gavarnie, where we celebrated Mass. It was an extremely special and moving day for both the leaders and the children we were supporting. Visits were also made to the Grotto where Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette. We were able to touch the walls of the Grotto and collect Holy water to take home to our families. We took the opportunity to pray for each other and our school, as well as to reflect on our days spent in Lourdes.

The Lourdes trip was an invaluable experience where we learnt many lifelong skills and came away with memories that will last forever. We all came back feeling enriched and reflective. We encourage anyone who has the opportunity to take part in this pilgrimage to do so. There is no place quite like Lourdes!

Sunset above Mill Green Golf Club framed the perfect setting for our final date with Year 11, the much awaited Prom. The scene was perfect, beautifully arranged tables, balloons and cold sparkling drinks awaited our Year 11 guests in anticipation of an evening to be remembered for the wonderful atmosphere and amazing students who have contributed so much to the Nicholas Breakspear Community over the years. Young men and women arrived excitedly, dressed to kill; each and everyone looking a million dollars. Limousines and vintage cars delivered students to the door, but it was George Roberts’ spectacular entrance as a passenger on a Quad bike that left the strongest of impressions. A lesson on how to arrive in style!

Teachers and pupils alike chatted and mingled sociably before sitting down to sumptuous food from a hot and cold

buffet. Voting slips were completed for Prom King and Queen and every guest awaited eagerly to discover who would win the coveted title this year. Finally, after many recounts, the results were in. Kian Mitre, the undisputed Prom King and Abbi Elliot, Prom Queen. Awards for best dressed boy and best dressed girl were received by Jamie Maguire and Aimee Tassel-Beswick.

Dancing commenced, led by Mr Newbury. It was an evening full of laughter, joy and shared memories. And so it is with a sense of sadness that the Year 11 students of 2017 finally depart for the summer. We wish them every happiness over the summer months and our best wishes as they await their final GCSE results in June.

Goodbye... Hello... and Thank You!Goodbye...We have extremely enjoyed our year as student leaders and are incredibly proud of what we have achieved as a team. We are delighted to announce that our total raised for KiSS this year exceeds £15,000. This will make such a momentous difference to the vulnerable children that we were privileged enough to have visited last October in Uganda.

Our success would not have been achieved without the support we received from the staff, teachers, students, parents and governors alike. We would like to acknowledge a n d t h a n k t h e m f o r t h e i r commitment and support.

We wish the new student leadership team every success for the upcoming academic year and we look forward to hearing about the projects they will confidently and passionately champion. Finally, we wish the school continued

s uc c e s s on i t s e nc ou rag i ng path towards fulfilling its true potent ia l as a n outsta ndi ng school.

Hello...As your student leadership team for 2017-2018, we firstly want to congratulate the previous student leadership team on the success they have achieved. We have been inspired by their work and it is sad to see them go, however, the impact they have made will last forever. To raise money for KiSS we are planning to hold a series of exciting events such as, a colour run, and KiSS week.

Fi n a l ly, we ’d l i k e to t h a n k everyone for the opportunity you have given us, it is a real honour and we cannot wait to begin this journey with you by our side.

Frankenstein was an adequate performance with good acting and character building. The weak point was the pace of the story and the strong point was the puppetry which was presented brilliantly.

SUMMER ARTS CELEBRATIONAll inclusive Summer Arts Celebration pleases all

This year’s Summer Art’s Celebration took place on 13th July and was bigger and better than ever. The evening featured Music, Drama and Dance performances from students in all year groups from Year 7 to Sixth Form, alongside our Art and Technology exhibition showcasing work from many of our talented GSCE and A Level students.

For many of our parents and students this was their first chance to see much of the Art examination and coursework which is on display, as it had been kept under ‘lock and key’ before the moderation visits. The work on display was diverse and reflected the individual interests and passions of the students. Year 13 work concentrated on themes such as flowers, animals, the dangers of smoking, sustainable buildings and biometric architecture (inspired by animals and natural forms) from two Year 13 students who have gained places studying architecture at University. The theme of the ‘Environment’ was explored in depth with originality and creativity by all our students, featuring statements about zoos, ancient woodlands, our disappearing wild flowers, clockwork mice and deforestation.

The GCSE Art work showcase was based on visits to St.Albans Cathedral, The British Museum and the students own personal visits and ideas on the examination theme. ’Beginnings and Ends’ which features cats in space, a Modern Interpretation of the ‘Little red riding Hood’ story and other unique and personal interpretations of the theme. If you missed the show, the A Level work will be on permanent display in the LIC corridor.

The Expressive Arts & Design Technology Department would like to thank everyone involved in putting the show together and allowing us to come together to celebrate the great talents of our students at Nicholas Breakspear.

Monica HilarioMy final piece was inspired by the theme of ancient woodland. My inspiration for this piece is from the work of Karen Schmidt, who has a very simplified Fauvist style. I chose ancient woodlands as my theme through my passion for the natural environment that surrounds us. The issues I have explored through this exam project is the destruction of ancient woodlands. In the following years, I intend to take a gap year to volunteer in third world countries by teaching English and to help with skills that we take for granted. I am also planning to go to University at Plymouth to study architectural engineering.

For my contextual study I went on a city walk in London which gave me a lot of inspiration for my work and future career. In my personal study I explored the ways in which modern architects are adapting to the increasing need for sus-tainable and eco-friendly design. I explored the inspiration behind the Sydney opera house and the AMEX stadium. Next year I will be at university, hopefully the University of Brighton, studying architecture. My aim is to be become an architect focusing on designing innovative and experimental private homes, or large scale stadiums.

Finan JohnsonThroughout my Art studies, I have focussed on how animals are portrayed in art. In my personal study and exam work I have explored how artists portray human characteristics in 20th century art, and relating my studies to the controversial issue of animal testing. This is a personal interest of mine, and I feel that it is wrong for animals to be subject to experiments where they suffer harsh tests.Next year I intend to attend York St John University, where I will be studying Marketing Management. Even though I am not officially continuing my art studies, I hope to still create some drawings and paintings in my spare time.

Quality & Excellence

Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School is delighted to announce that from September 2017, we will have two new school minibuses in use. The money for these minibuses was raised through joint fundraising by both the school and Parent’s Association, as well as through donations. These will be an invaluable resource for the school, allow-ing us to transport children both to and from school and between NBS and JHN, as well as aiding with transport for sporting and extra-curricular activities. Thank you to all those who generously donated.

New Minibuses

On the 8th July the NBS community came together to enjoy a fun filled family event. The ‘NBSfest’ hosted numerous stalls, inflata-bles and live performances from local bands and students. There was also the opportunity to relax with a cold drink and catch up with friends in the sun. The event also hosted the school’s annual Jamie McVeigh Trophy, a football tournament dedicated in honour of a former pupil. Past and current students all participated in matches, in memory of Jamie. This year’s winning team was the class of 2003 who won the Trophy.Various local bands performed, including Six Go Mad, The Drop Outs, Igneous Frog and The Co-Pilots. The series of live perfor-mances concluded with a lively DJ, who energised the crowd and got everyone up and dancing. The night finished with a bang, thanks to the grand finale fireworks display, which proved highly popular amongst the large crowd gathered on the school field. The day was a huge success thanks to everyone who dedicated their time to organising and managing the event, and those who attended NBSfest to support the school. It was a great way to celebrate the end of the school year. We eagerly await next year’s NBSfest and hope you’ll join us!

NBS Sporting ReviewThis term has seen NBS teams compete in a variety of sports, from football and basketball to netball and sports hall athletics. Our teams have shown a competitive spirit in all the matches that they have participated in over the course of the year, and through grit and determination they have achieved some levels of success. The PE department now look forward to the next school year where there is a full fixture list in athletics, tennis, rounders and cricket. Mr Tominey, Head of PE

FootballDistrict Cup Finals This year’s success on the football pitch has seen us reach not one but two district cup finals for the first time in 4 years. The team made it to the final after beating strong opposition in the previous rounds. Excellent goalkeeping from Kyle Honney, as well as strong defend-ing lead by Martin Sexton ensured that the team did not concede a goal throughout the tournament. The final itself was held on the hallowed turf in front of a crowd of both parents and students. The final was a tense game, with NBS going 2-0 up, only to concede 2 goals in the second half. With fatigue hitting both sides, extra time looked inevitable, until wing wizard Kazi Swaryczewski popped up and scored with a fine finish and ecstatic celebrations. The final whistle blew moments after and the Year 11s were crowned District Champions.

The Senior Cup final is regarded as the most prestigious in the District, the best players in the school compete against Year 11-13s from other schools for the title of District Champions. The senior’s route to the final was a tough one, overcoming strong sides from SJL and SCC to set up a final under the lights at the St Albans City FC home ground of Clarence Park. The occasion was fitting for a team who have worked hard on the pitch and developed in their matu-rity and ability throughout the year. With sixth formers leading the way, supplemented by some Year 11 boys, at half time NBS were 1-0 down. After a motivational team talk at half time, the boys came out fighting and managed to win a penalty which was converted by Joe Pontes. Unfortunately, due to every member of the team giving their all, fatigue set in and Verulam managed to score two goals, inflict-ing a loss which was undeserved. Huge credit must go to both teams for such a successful run in the competitions and we look forward to building on this success next year! Mr Newbery

International Football SchoolsThis year our Year 7s, 8s and 9s have had the opportunity to play international schools from Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in foot-ball, basketball and netball. The Year 7’s have had the opportunity to play all three schools and the 8’s and 9’s have played one or two of the other schools. This has been an amazing experience for our sports teams, where

they have been able to see the skill level of student’s across the other side of the world. Our sports teams have both won and lost matches which have always been exciting and competitive, but always friendly. The P.E Department aims to carry on the link between these schools and give more students the opportunity to play against international schools in the future, both on our home territory and away on theirs.

AthleticsHaving experienced a mixed bag of weather for athletics season, each year group has had its ups and downs whilst competing this year, however there were still numerous successes. The Year 8’s and 10’s competed in the County League against some very strong schools from across the district, with stand-out performances in both year groups. We have been very successful in high jump, with Rosie Day from Year 10 winning all but one of her High Jump competitions, and David Omoregbee in Year 8 also winning each of his competitions. Will Palacio, Year 10, achieved highly in the hurdles and Jake Coleman, Year 10, successfully threw a PB in Shot Putt. The Year 7 and 9 students competed in the district friendlies, with an exceptional performance from Daniel Eke winning in each High Jump competition.

The athletics season came to an end with the district athletic cham-pionships held at Garston, Watford. We had some stand out perfor-mances with several students placing in the top 3 across a range of different events. These students were: Overall, the school was able to win the small schools trophy again for the 6th year running. The small schools trophy is competed for between all schools that have less than 800 students. Well done to all of our students who participated.
