The annual River Bell Classic will air live on WHNO-TV 20 and is available on the radio via the Colonel Sports Radio Network. First Five - Nicholls will be looking to avoid its first winless season since 1995 where the team finished 0-11. Before last year’s 4-8 campaign, the Colonels had back-to- back one-win seasons, but the wins came very early in the non-conference slate. In conference, the Colonels have lost 13 consecutive games after winning last year’s opener against Northwestern State. - Nicholls and Southeastern will meet for the 24th time, with Nicholls holding a slight 12-11 in the all-time series. Although Nicholls has a 6-3 advantage in games played in Thibodaux, the Lions have won three consecutive in the series, including a 35-16 victory at John L. Guidry in 2012. - Junior RB Michael Henry has a chance to become only the third Colonel to rush for a 1,000 yards in a season, but will need to post stellar game against one of the FCS’ most stout run defenses. Henry, who missed a game-and-a-half this season due to injuries, enters Game 12 with 887 yards rushing (48th in FCS) with six rushing touchdowns. - Before the game, Nicholls will recognize it’s 2014 Senior Class. Members of the class include Demon Bolt, Ty Boudreaux, Davin Bovie, Keenan Canty, Andrew Carter, Byron Cobb, Josh Dewey, Ashton Duhe, Cole Frazier, Conner Fryoux, Tyler Harrington, Beaux Hebert, Kalen Henderson, Toren Joseph, Tyler Knowles, Nick LeBlanc, Dwayne Mitchell, Rafe Plaisance, Nick Scelfo, Daniel Stewart, Jordan Thompson, Michael Woods and Ryan Zeller - With Charlie Stubbs’ resignation, former Idaho offensive coordinator Steve Axman was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Axman, known for de- veloping young quarterbacks and high-powered offenses, brings a wealth of experience after coaching at programs such as UCLA, Washington, Stanford and Arizona. Axman is still searching for his first win as the Colonels’ head coach, posting an 0-8 record. 2014 Team Statistical Comparison Nicholls (Southland Rank /11) Southeastern La. Last Meeting (11-21-13)Southeastern Louisiana 52Nicholls 27

HAMMOND, La. – Nicholls went into the locker room with a slim 14-13 lead, but No. 8/10 Southeastern Louisiana put 32 points on the board in the third quarter as the Lions retained the River Bell trophy for the third consecutive year with a 52-27 victory over the Colonels. Nicholls fi nishes the year on a six-game losing streak, falling to 4-8 overall and 1-6 in conference. Southeastern wins its eighth straight game to improve to 10-2 and goes undefeated in Southland play to earn an outright title. Despite a strong fi rst half by the Colonel defense, the Lions recorded a program record 702 yards on offense. Nicholls fi nished the game with 448 yards, led by sophomore quarterback Tuskani Figaro with 139 yards passing, 84 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Figaro fi nished the year with a single-season rushing record of 1,103 yards, surpassing Nakia Lumar’s mark of 1,072 set in 1996. Sophomore running backs Michael Henry and Reggie Wilson also had career days for the Colonels. Henry accounted for 175 all-purpose yards, with 90 rushing and 85 receiving – both career highs – while Wilson scored his fi rst and second career touchdowns. His second came on a Beaux Hebert 11-yard pass late in the fourth which made the fi nal score. Hebert completed 7 of 12 passes for 116 yards. Lion quarterback Bryan Bennett paved the way for SLU, throwing for 273 yards and two touchdowns on 16 of 25 attempts. Bennett also rushed for a score, fi nishing with 120 yards on 13 carries. Seniors Carey Fortson and Erik Buchanan led the Nicholls receivers with 54 and 45 yards, respec-tively. Buchanan set a program record for yards per reception in a season, averaging 24.1 yards (507 yards, 21 receptions). Junior Conner Fryoux had a solid day punting for Nicholls, fi nishing with a 44.2 yard average on fi ve punts. On defense, freshman safety B.T. Sanders led Nicholls with a career-high 16 tackles and added a fumble recovery. B.J. Lewis chipped in with 10 tackles in his fi nal game while Bermond fi nished the year with fi ve forced fumbles. In addition to his rushing record, Figaro became the fi rst Colonel in program history to pass and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. Figaro closed out his sophomore year with 1,135 yards passing and eight touchdowns.

2014 Nicholls Football Notes

QUICK HITS FROM LAST GAMENicholls dropped its 17th straight game with its 48-21 loss at Northwestern State... despite the loss, the Colonels scored three touchdowns for the fi fth straight game. Nicholls had three touch-downs in a single game only once in the fi rst six games... Nicholls scored on the game’s opening drive, capped on a 19-yard run by RB Michael Henry... Henry carried the ball a career-high 29 times for a career-best 146 yards... WR Demon Bolt caught a 2-yard TD pass from Beaux Hebert in the 3rd quarter... TE Nick Scelfo had his fi rst receiving TD of the season, catching a 3-yarder from Kalen Henderson late in the fourth quar-ter... LB Kameryon Brown led the Colonels with 8 tackles.

REDSHIRTING FIGARO With the luxury of having two senior quarter-backs, the plan in 2014 is to allow junior Tuskani Figaro to redshirt this season. Figaro was sup-posed to sit out last season, but a rash of early injuries forced him into playing time. Figaro took the opportunity and literally ran with it, setting the Colonels’ single-season all-time rushing mark with 1,103 yards. Along with throwing for over 1,000 yards, he also ranked second in the SLC with 100.3 rushing yards per game, and he also matched the program record with fi ve 100-yard rushing efforts in one season.

two 100sAlthough Nicholls lost quite a bit of rushing from last season, the Colonels posted two 100-yard rushers for the fi rst time in nine games in its loss to SFA. Michael Henry rushed for 132 yards while Tobias Lofton recorded his fi rst career 100-yard game with 104 yards. The Colonels had multiple 100-yard rushers last season against Lamar with QB Tuskani Figaro and RB Dalton Hilliard Jr., but the team had not had two running backs rush for over 100 in the same game since Nov. 6 of 2004 when Colt Colletti (120) and David Plaisance (105) completed the feat in an upset 41-23 win over No. 15 SFA.

OFF TARGETSophomore safety B.T. Sanders missed the fi rst half of Saturday’s game after being fl agged for targeting in the second half of the Colonels’ last game against UIW. Sanders made a hard hit to save a potential touchdown but was penalized for targeting. After further review, the offi cials stuck with the call and Sanders was ejected for the re-mainder of the game.

CANTY NABS TWO AWARDSSenior Keenan Canty was a busy man against Lamar as he set a program-record with 10 kick returns. He fi nished with 203 kick return yards and even caught a 5-yard touchdown pass, but the highlight of his day came on his only punt re-turn, which he ran back 83 yards for a TD in the third quarter. Canty went on to be named South-land and The Sports Network FCS Special Teams Player of the Week, becoming the fi rst Colonel to win a national weekly award since Chika Madu earned the same honor in 2011. Canty leads the FCS in combined return yards (1,175) and ranks 35th in all-purpose yards with 126.2 per game.

LSWA DEFENSIVE POWSenior LB Davin Bovie had an outstanding indi-vidual effort in the Colonels’ loss to SFA, fi nish-ing with 19 tackles, 17 of which were solo. For his performance, Bovie was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week by the Louisiana Sports Writ-ers Association (LSWA). Bovie, who is second in the Southland in tackles at 9.2 per game, also earned honorable mention honors from the con-ference. In addition, Bovie ranks 10th in the FCS in solo tackles with 6.0 per game.

O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!With 7 games remaining, IHC Steve Axman decided to hold a team vote to elect four team captains for the rest of the season. Receiving the nod were senior LB Davin Bovie, senior CB Byron Cobb, senior QB Beaux Hebert and junior RB Michael Henry.

AT THE HALFSince the start of 2010, the Colonels are 9-4 when holding the lead at halftime. When tied at the half, the Colonels are 1-2. Unfortunately that accounts for all the wins as the team is 0-40 when heading into the locker room trailing.

jaguars in 2016The Colonels will renew its rivalry with the Uni-versity of South Alabama as the teams will square off in the 2016 season. Nicholls and USA last faced each other in what turned out to be the Colonels’ season opener in 2012, with the Jag-uars squeaking out a 9-3 victory. The fi rst meet-ing between the schools came in 2010 where South Alabama won 39-21.

DOUBLE DUTYSenior Byron Cobb has not only emerged as a vocal leader for the defense, but his play has spoke for itself as well. Along with having two in-terceptions last season, Cobb broke up a touch-down pass at Western Michigan, helping Nicholls to its third-ever FBS win. This season, Cobb is eighth in the league in passes defended with nine including one pick. Cobb is not only the starting cornerback for the Colonels, but the St. Francis-ville native is a member of the Colonel baseball team. Cobb has played in 24 games on the dia-mond, batting .357 with two doubles, a triple and nine runs scored.

FRAZIER HONORED BY NFFSenior defensive lineman Cole Frazier was rec-ognized by the National Football Foundation as a semifi nalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is awarded to the best football scholar-ath-lete in the nation. A 2013 Southland All-Academic honoree last season, Frazier is majoring in busi-ness administration/pre-law.

THE ROADLike Cormac McCarthy’s novel, Nicholls’ fi rst half of the schedule pitted the Colonels on a long dreary road as the Red and Gray played 5 of its fi rst 6 games away from home. Nicholls did snap a 14-game road skid with its win at Western Michigan last season, but the Colonels have not won a road conference game since their 37-7 win at Northwestern State on 11/13/14 (14 games).

SOUTHLAND STRONGThe Southland Conference has two teams ranked in the top 25 of both major FCS Polls. Southeastern is ranked No. 10 in both polls while McNeese is 19 in the Sports Network Poll and 17th in the coaches’ poll.

WEBB HIGHLIGHTS 2014 HALL OF FAME CLASS Former Colonel and current Baltimore Raven Lardarius Webb was voted into the Nicholls Ath-letics Hall of Fame after appearing on the ballot for the fi rst time. Webb, who became the second Col-onel in the last four seasons to win a Super Bowl ring after his Ravens defeated San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII, 34-31, had a storied career at Nicholls, earning All-American honors in both of his seasons as he racked up nearly 40 individual awards. Webb, along with fellow footballer Gerald Butler, baseball’s Mike Mohler and softball star Christina Thornton, were honored during the Colo-nels’ game against Henderson State.

PON DE REPLAYThe Southland Conference and DVSport, Inc., the leader in collegiate football high-defi nition (HD) replay technology, have partnered to pro-vide the league and its 11 football-playing institu-tions with the cutting-edge technology and effi -cient workfl ow of DVSport’s HD Replay™ system beginning with the 2014 season. The Southland Conference is the fi rst NCAA Football Champion-ship Subdivision league to implement a full-time instant replay solution for all home games, regardless of television coverage.

ON THE TUBEThe Colonels will have six games televised this season. The games vs. Air Force and Houston Baptist were streamed on ESPN3, while the matchup at Arkansas was on the SEC Network . The North Texas game aired on the Ameri-can Sports Network and the Colonels and UCA squared off on the Southland Conference Net-work. The fi nal game will be on WHNO as the Colonels and SLU battle in the River Bell Classic.

BOBBY APRIL IN OAKLANDFormer Colonel Bobby April, who played four seasons at linebacker including for Nicholls’ fi rst team in program history in 1972, is in his sec-ond season as the special teams coordinator for the Oakland Raiders. April, a 24-year veteran in the coaching ranks, has been considered one of the NFL’s most highly regarded special teams coaches. Before joining Oakland, he previously coached for the Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, St. Louis Rams, New Orleans Saints, Pitts-burg Steelers and Atlanta Falcons.

THE MANNING CAMPOver the summer, Nicholls State University host-ed The Manning Passing Academy for the 10th consecutive year. The four-day camp, put on by the Manning family - Archie and his sons, Coo-per, Eli and Peyton - brought in close to 1,200 high school campers from all over the country. In addition to the Manning’s, every year some of the most elite NCAA quarterbacks act as camp coun-selors. Current NFL starting quarterbacks that were recently counselors include Andrew Luck, Andy Dalton and E.J. Manuel.

Steve Axman, a native of Hun-tington Station, N.Y., will serve as Interim Head Coach of the Nicholls football program for the remainder of the 2014 season.

In addition to his head coach-ing responsibilities, Axman will oversee the quarterbacks and help direct the offense. Known for developing young quarterbacks and high pow-ered offenses, Axmen brings a wealth of experience to Nicholls after coaching at programs such as UCLA, Washington, Minnesota, Stan-

ford and Arizona. He coached several top-fl ight quarter-backs during his tenure, including UCLA’s Troy Aikman and Washington’s Marques Tuaisasopo. His last stint was at the University of Idaho from 2007-11, where he served as offensive coordinator for the Vandals. Axman began his illustrious coaching career at East Stroudsburg State before moving on to positions at Illinois, Army and Albany State. He joined the University of Arizona staff as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for fi ve seasons, followed by a stint with the Denver Gold of the United States Football League, and headed back to the Pac-10 to coach at Stanford and UCLA. At UCLA, Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman ranked second in the NCAA in passing effi ciency under Axman’s guidance, leading the Bruins to a 10-2 record and a No. 9 ranking in the fi nal AP poll. Following his time with UCLA, Axman joined the staff at Maryland where he coached fu-ture NFL quarterbacks Neil O’Donnell and Scott Zolak.

Axman landed his fi rst head coaching job at Northern Arizona University, directing the Lumberjack program for eight seasons. He fi nished his career at NAU as the second winningest coach in program history after record-ing 48 victories. In 1996, he was named Region V Coach of the Year. After a year at Minnesota, Axman returned to the Pac-10 to join the Washington Huskies staff. In his fi rst season, Tuiasosopo was named Pac-10 Player of the Year as he led UW to a Rose Bowl title. Three years later, Axman returned to UCLA as offensive coordinator and quarter-backs coach. His fi nal stop before Idaho came at Montana where he coached the quarterbacks in 2006 for the 12-2 Grizzles. A graduate of C.W. Post in Greenvale, N.Y., Axman went on to earn his fi rst master’s degree from Long Island Uni-versity in 1972 and his second in 1975 while coaching at East Stroudsburg State.

Axman is married to Dr. Marie Axman, and the couple has four daughters - Mary Beth, Jaclyn, Melissa and Kimberly.

2014 Nicholls Football Notes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Things looked promising in the early going for the Nicholls State University football team in its season opener at Air Force as the teams were tied in the second quar-ter, but the Falcons’ rushing attack proved to be too much, leading to 35 consecutive points as the Colonels fell 44-16 on Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. With the loss, Nicholls (0-1) drops to 21-22 all-time in season openers, and 0-2 all-time against Air Force (1-0). Nicholls managed 263 yards on offense, with 63 yards on the ground. Kalen Henderson led the offense, throwing for 136 yards on 12-of-25 passing. Beaux Hebert went 6-for-6, all in the fourth quar-ter, for 64 yards, throwing a late touchdown pass to Darryl Watson II, who fi nished with four grabs for 66 yards. While Air Force had only 19 yards on six pass attempts, the Falcons were nearly unstoppable in running the ball, rushing for 539 yards. Jacobi Owens had a career day, accumulating 233 yards on 23 carries. Air Force racked up 7.4 yards per carry on 73 attempts. After a pair of three-and-outs by the Colonel defense to start the game, Air Force’s defense was responsible for the fi rst points of the day when Henderson was called for intentional grounding in the end zone. Following a punt that pinned Nicholls inside the 10, Weston Steelhammer came unblocked through the left side and hit Henderson, who tried to throw the ball away, but the penalty resulted in a 2-0 lead for the Falcons with 8:24 on the clock. The free kick led to great fi eld position for Air Force, and the Falcons scored the fi rst touchdown on a 7-play, 2:23 drive. Owens highlighted the drive with a 40-yard rush to the Colonel 4, and Garrett Brown ran it in from fi ve yards out. After the extra point, Air Force took a 9-0 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the quarter. Nicholls answered on its next drive, scoring on an 18-yard run by Tobias Lofton. Keenan Canty started the drive with a 13-yard run on an end around, and Reggie Wilson ran 21 yards on a screen pass. Following a 14-yard keeper by Henderson, Lofton found a seam in the defense, running un-touched into the end zone for the Colonels’ fi rst touchdown of the year. But the Falcons blocked the extra point, making the score 9-6. The Colonels got the ball back at midfi eld when Cole Frazier stopped Kale Pearson on a keeper on 4th-and-3. The good fi eld position led to a 37-yard fi eld goal by Francisco Condado with 13:20 to go until half, tying the game at 9-all. Air Force put together an 11-play, 75-yard drive on the next possession to take a 16-9 lead. Fol-lowing a punt by the Colonels, the Falcons tacked on another touchdown, scoring from two yards out on a run by Devin Rushing. Air Force headed into the locker room with a 23-9 lead. Not much changed after the break, as the triple option continued to cause problems for the Colonel defense. Air Force piled on 169 rushing yards in the third, scoring two more touchdowns for a 37-9 lead. Air Force added one more touchdown in the fourth before Hebert and Watson hooked up to make the fi nal. Davin Bovie led the Colonel defense with 11 tackles, while Kameryon Brown and Ronnie Walker had nine each. For Air Force, Conner Healy had eight stops and the team accounted for fi ve sacks.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Nicholls fell behind 35 points after the fi rst quarter against Arkansas and the Colonels could never get much going in their fi rst-ever meeting with a Southeastern Conference pro-gram as Nicholls was handed a 73-7 loss on Saturday in front of 63,108 fans at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Nicholls (0-2) dropped its eighth consecutive game, and the loss was the third largest defi cit in program history. The win for Arkansas (1-1) put an end to its 10-game losing streak. The Colonels were overmatched on both sides of the ball against the Razorbacks, as Nicholls fi nished with 242 on offense and gave up 684 yards. In the fi rst half, the Colonels had only fi ve six downs, with two coming from penalty, and were held to 55 yards. Arkansas rumbled for 326 yards rushing in the fi rst two quarters, fi nishing with 495 yards on the ground. With the help of the 35-point fi rst quarter, Arkansas headed into the locker room with a 56-0 lead. The Razorbacks score once in the third before Kalen Henderson threw a strike to Keenan Canty for a 10-yard touchdown for the Colonels’ only score of the game. Henderson fi nished with 105 yards passing on 12 of 30, while Canty had a solid day, catching four balls for 41 yards. Xavier Marcus led the Colonels with fi ve catches for 59 yards. To start the game, the Colonels received the opening kickoff and moved the chains after their fi rst two plays, but the Razorback defense did not give up much else for the rest of the quarter. Arkansas then needed only two plays to gain a 14-0 advantage. After the Colonels punted on their fi rst drive, Keon Hatcher scored on the fi rst play, running untouched for 82 yards. On the Ra-zorbacks’ next possession, Alex Collins opened the drive with a 33-yard rush for an early two-score lead. For the day, Arkansas had a total of fi ve scoring drives that were only one play. Later in the quarter, two touchdown passes by Brandon Allen doubled up the lead for Arkansas, and Collins capped off the quarter with a 2-yard touchdown. In the second, the Colonel defense fi nally forced a punt, but after another three-and-out by the offense, Hatcher broke wide open for a 50-yard touchdown catch. The Razorbacks continued to pour it on, adding a 90-yard scoring run by Jonathan Williams before Collins recorded his third touchdown run of the half to give Arkansas a commanding 56-0 lead. Williams had 143 yards rushing on just four carries while Collins had 131 yards. After the break, the Razorbacks wasted no time in scoring again as Allen hit Jared Cornelius for a 38-yard score to open the half. The Colonels then put together their best drive of the day, march-ing 75 yards down the fi eld on nine plays. On fi rst-and-goal from the 10, Henderson connected with Canty over the middle to prevent the shutout. In the fourth, Arkansas added a fi eld goal and a touchdown to make the fi nal. B.T. Sanders led the defense with seven tackles, and John Williamson added a 50-yard intercep-tion that halted a scoring drive in the third.

THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls was held scoreless through two-and-a-half quarters in their home open-er against Henderson State before rallying back from an 18-0 defi cit to make it a one possession game, but two costly turnovers ended the threat as the Colonels fell, 27-10, on Saturday night at John L. Guidry Stadium. The loss was the Colonels’ ninth consecutive setback dating back to last season and it also snapped their fi ve-game winning streak in home openers. Nicholls (0-3) wraps up non-conference play next weekend at North Texas. The Colonel defense did an acceptable job of controlling Henderson State All-American quar-terback Kevin Rodgers, limiting him to 169 yards passing and one touchdown, but the rushing woes continued for the defensive unit as the Reddies rushed for 212 yards. Henderson State rushed for 4.9 yards per carry and had three players rush for over 50 yards, led by Jaquan Cole with 76 yards. Despite playing against their fi rst non-FBS opponent, the Colonels struggled on offense once again, being held to 252 total yards. Nicholls only rushed for 88 yards, marking the third consecutive game that the team was held under 100 yards. Kalen Henderson completed 20 of 36 passes for 147 yards and added 58 yards rushing, but the senior gave up the ball twice after Nicholls made the score 18-10 early in the fourth quarter. Tobias Lofton rushed for 32 yards and scored the Colonels’ fi rst points of the game, running in from fi ve yards out at the 5:37 mark in the third. On Henderson State’s fi rst play of their next drive, B.T. Sanders stepped in front of a Rodgers pass for his fi rst career interception, giving the Colonels the ball back at their own 27. Henderson led Nicholls down the fi eld for a 34-yard fi eld goal by Francisco Condado, just 40 seconds into the fourth. Nicholls forced a punt on the next possession and got great fi eld position after a 7-yard punt; however, HSU’s Henry Davis forced a fumble on a Henderson run at midfi eld, and the Reddies pounced on it to gain possession. Henderson State then scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run by Cole to cap a 5-play, 50-yard drive with nine minutes to go. On the Colonels’ next possession, Henderson was sacked and lost the ball, leading to a 32-yard fi eld goal by Houston Ray which gave the Reddies a comfortable 27-10 lead with less than fi ve min-utes to go. The Colonels were forced to punt and HSU went on to down the ball to preserve the win. Eight different receivers caught passes for the Colonels, led by Reggie Wilson and Demon Bolt with fi ve each. Wilson racked up 48 yards while Bolt fi nished with 35. The defense was led by Ronnie Walker with 14 tackles and Davin Bovie tallied 13 stops. Josh Dewey led the team with two tackles for loss. For Henderson State, Mark Czaus had seven catches for 49 yards, scoring the game’s fi rst TD on a 16-yard reception in the fi rst quarter. Verrick Ponder scored HSU’s other touchdown, barreling in from a yard out in the second quarter. The Reddies went into the break with a 15-0 lead.

DENTON, Texas – In their fi rst meeting since 2002, North Texas proved not much has changed as the Mean Green remained undefeated in the series against Nicholls with a 77-3 victory on Saturday at Apogee Stadium. The Colonles (0-4) have lost 10 consecutive games dating back to last season and fall to 0-6 all-time against North Texas (2-2). The loss was also the fi rst under interim head coach Steve Axman, who took over the reins on Tuesday. The game was never in doubt as North Texas jumped out to a 21-0 lead after just fi ve minutes. The Colonels managed a fi eld goal in the fi rst quarter, but the Mean Green broke open the game with four touchdowns in the second. The second half was much of the same as the Colonels had no answer for the Mean Green in any facet of the game. Along with 526 yards of offense for North Texas, the former Southland Confer-ence member scored on defense and special teams while keeping the Colonels off the scoreboard. Nicholls was held to 244 yards on offense and 14 fi rst downs. Running back Michael Henry led the offense, rushing for 95 yards on 19 carries. Under center, Kalen Henderson played the fi rst half, throwing for 50 yards on 7 of 15 passes with two interceptions. Henderson was under duress the whole 30 minutes, resulting in six sacks. Beaux Hebert played the second half, fi nishing with 116 yards passing on 10 of 16 passes. Demon Bolt led the receivers with 38 yards on four receptions while Keenan Canty also had four grabs for 36 yards. In the game, North Texas took the opening kickoff and needed just fi ve plays to take a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Dajon Williams, who accounted for fi ve touchdowns, ran in from eight yards for the fi rst score, and following a pick on Henderson’s fi rst pass, Williams found a wide open Carlos Harris for a 41-yard touchdown. The Mean Green then received great fi eld position after blocking a Colonel punt and it led to a Reggie Pegram 1-yard touchdown run. Trailing 21-0, Nicholls put together its best drive of the day, going 69 yards on 13 plays. Fueled by a 36-yard run by Henry, the Colonels moved inside the 5-yard line, but had to settle for a 23-yard fi eld goal by Francisco Condado with 5:03 on the clock. In the second quarter, following another touchdown run by Williams that made the score 28-3, James Jones stepped in front of a Henderson pass for an interception and returned it 33 yards for a touchdown. North Texas then scored two more touchdowns in the quarter, both on passes by Wil-liams, to lead 49-3 at half time. After the break, Nicholls was forced to punt on their fi rst drive, and Darvin Kidsy ran it back for a 75-yard touchdown. North Texas continued to pour it on, rushing for two more touchdowns in the quarter. The Mean Green capped the dominating performance with a 98-yard interception return for a touchdown by Zac Whitfi eld early in the fourth. B.T. Sanders led the Colonel defense with nine tackles, while Josh Dewey and Davin Bovie had fi ve tackles each.

CONWAY, Ark. – Nicholls trailed by 12 points early in the second half in its Southland Conference opener at Central Arkansas, but the Bears scored 28 consecutive points to defeat the Colonels, 52-18, on Saturday at Estes Stadium. With the loss, Nicholls falls to 0-5 on the year and 7-17 in conference openers. The Colonels have lost six straight to UCA (2-3, 1-0) and 11 consecutive overall. Running back Michael Henry rushed for a career-high 142 yards on 21 carries, averaging 6.8 yards per rush. Most of the damage came in the fi rst half as the junior had 118 yards before the intermission. Henry carried the ball only three times in the second half. The Colonels relied heavily on the run game, rushing the ball 45 times for a net of 127. A large portion of the Colonels’ rushing yards were negated on a failed wide receiver pass, an oversnapped ball and three sacks. Kalen Henderson completed 5-of-11 passes for 68 yards, picking up most of his yardage on the Colonels’ touchdown drive in the fi rst quarter. Beaux Hebert threw for 45 yards on 4-of-8 and con-nected with Kyron King for a late touchdown. UCA used a balanced attack, racking up 267 yards passing and 220 yards on the ground. The Bears rushed for four touchdowns and scored three on passes. B.T. Sanders led Nicholls defense with 12 tackles, followed by Kameryon Brown with 11 and Ronnie Walker with 10. The defense got a big play early on by Sanders as he intercepted a pass by Ryan Howard on UCA’s fi rst drive. But after a 21-yard punt by the Colonels, the Bears struck fi rst with a scoring drive. Blake Veasley scored the game’s fi rst touchdown, rushing in from seven yards out. Nicholls answered with a touchdown on their next possession, scoring on a 13-yard run by Henderson. The senior kept the drive alive with a pair of third-down completions, fi nding Demon Bolt for 28 yards before an 11-yard completion to Keenan Canty moved the ball into the red zone. On the next play, Henderson powered through the left side from 13-yards to make the score 7-6 with 2:16 remaining in the fi rst. But the Colonels’ extra-point was no good, keeping the defi cit at one. UCA marched down the fi eld early in the second quarter, taking a 14-6 lead after a Willie Mat-thews touchdown. Matthews led the Bears with two rushing touchdowns, fi nishing with 56 yards on 18 carries. Later in the quarter, Nicholls looked to have its fi rst sack of the season as Cole Frazier forced a fumble deep in UCA territory that was recovered by the Gus Ferrat, but the Colonels were fl agged for illegal use of hands, which negated the turnover. The Bears went on to add a 35-yard fi eld goal by Jace Denker for a 17-6 lead. Before the break, Henderson and Henry botched an exchange on a handoff, giving UCA the ball back on Nicholls’ 16. Two plays later, Howard connected with Dezmin Smith for a 10-yard touchdown with 1:16 remaining. The Colonels moved close enough for a 49-yard fi eld goal attempt by Francisco Condado right before the intermission, but the kick sailed right to keep the score at 24-6. Nicholls cut the lead in half just one minute into the third quarter as Joel Dullary picked off a pass by Howard and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. The interception was the freshman’s fi rst for his career, and the Colonels’ fi rst interception returned for a score since 2011. But once again, no PAT was added as the Bears blocked the kick, leaving the score at 24-12. The special teams woes continued for the Colonels on the ensuing kickoff, surrendering a 78-yard return by Jatavioius Wilson. Three plays later, Howard hit Courtney Whitehead for a 10-yard score. Central Arkansas tacked on two more touchdowns in the quarter, extending its lead to 45-12. After UCA added another touchdown in the fourth, the Colonels scored multiple touchdowns for the second time this season as Hebert and King hooked up with just two seconds remaining. UCA blocked the extra-point once again, giving Nicholls one missed fi eld goal and three unsuccessful extra-points on the day.

game 6: #5/4 Mcneese state 45, nicholls 3oct. 4, 2014 in lake charles, la.cowboy stadium

THIBODAUX, La. - Nicholls had a few opportunities in the fi rst half to hang around with No. 5/4 Mc-Neese State, but the Colonels were never able to capitalize as the Cowboys rolled to a 45-3 victory at Cowboys Stadium. With the loss, Nicholls drops to 0-6 on the year and 0-2 in Southland play. The Colonels have lost 12 consecutive games overall and six straight in the series to McNeese (3-1, 1-0 SLC). The Cowboys led 31-0 in the third quarter before Francisco Condado prevented the shutout with a career-long 47-yard fi eld goal with 6:17remaining. McNeese added two more touchdowns in the fourth to make the fi nal. Facing one of the FCS’ top defenses, the Colonels were held to 257 yards, but had a pair of solid efforts by wide receiver Demon Bolt and running back Michael Henry. Bolt hauled in three receptions for a career-best 105 yards, while Henry rushed for 81 yards on just nine carries. Senior quarterback Beaux Hebert made his fi rst start of the season, fi nishing with 88 yards pass-ing on 8-of-16 attempts. While the Colonels were able to move the ball inside the Cowboy 30 twice in the fi rst half, the team came up empty on the scoreboard. The Cowboys jumped out to a 17-0 lead before the Colonels threatened to put points on the board in the fi nal two drives of the half. With less than seven minutes remaining in the quarter, Henry rumbled for 40 yards, moving the Colonels into McNeeese’s side of the fi eld. But McNeese showed off its top-rated defense, stuffi ng the Colonels on a fourth-and-1 run at the Cowboy 26. After moving the ball inside the Cowboy 30 for a second-straight drive, this time fueled by a 38-yard catch by Bolt, an interception in the end zone thrown by Hebert thwarted the momentum once again. McNeese then needed only six plays to travel 80 yards for the fi nal score of the half, taking a 24-0 lead into the break. In the second half, McNeese’s Daniel Sams threw a touchdown pass to RJ Walters just fi ve min-utes in. After Nicholls cracked the scoring column on Condado’s fi eld goal, McNeese scored another touchdown in the third on a 2-yard run by Dylan Long. Ryan Ross ran a touchdown in from 1 yard in the fourth, putting the fi nal score at 45-3. While Hebert started the game, Kalen Henderson played in the second half, completing 6-of-10 passes for 99 yards. The duo was sacked six times on the night, resulting in -54 yards. Despite Henry’s 9.0 yard per carry average, Nicholls had just 70 net yards rushing after the sacks. Nicholls was led on defense by Ronnie Walker with 13 tackles, Kameryon Brown had 11 and Davin Bovie and Byron Cobb added nine each. For McNeese, Sams rushed for 135 yards on 11 carries as the Cowboys racked up 567 yards of total offense. Sams also threw for 76 yards and two scores, while Tyler Bolfi ng completed 10-of-15 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown.

vs southeastern lagame 7: stephen f. austin 42, nicholls 20oct. 11, 2014 in thibodaux, la.john l. guidry stadium

THIBODAUX, La. – After an hour long lightning delay, Nicholls had its best showing of the season, led by 136 yards on the ground by Michael Henry and another 104 by Tobias Lofton, but Stephen F. Austin scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away as the Colonels fell 42-20 at John L. Guidry Stadium. Nicholls drops to 0-7 on the year and 0-3 in Southland play after losing its 13th consecutive contest. With the win, Stephen F. Austin ups its record to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in conference, and also ends its 12-game road losing streak. The Colonels racked up a season-high 381 yards of total offense, headed by their 1-2 punch at running back. Henry toted the ball 19 times and found the end zone twice, while Lofton carried the ball six times and scored on a 66-yard run in the third, which was the Colonels’ longest play of the year. The wet fi eld conditions may have played a factor early on as the teams were knotted up at 7-7 at the half. But after the defense came up big in the fi rst and second quarters, SFA found its groove in the fi nal 30 minutes as they were able to turn their yardage into points. The Lumberjacks fi nished with 599 yards on offense, with quarterback Zach Conque accounting for 291 yards passing with 51 yards rushing and three scores. In the third, the squads combined for 34 points as SFA led 28-20 heading into the fi nal quarter. The ‘Jacks had a 28-13 led after Gus Johnson, who rushed for 202 yards on 19 carries, found the end zone for the third time on the night. Nicholls answered right before the end of the quarter with a 41-yard touchdown run by Henry, his longest rush of the season. Conque engineered a 12-play, 81 yard drive on SFA’s fi rst possession of the fourth to give the ‘Jacks a 35-20 lead. The drive was highlighted by a 35-yard pass to Aaron Thomas. Nicholls looked to have forced a turnover right after the long pass as Chris Lorden poked the ball out from Johnson, but SFA recovered the fumble and Conque capped the drive with a 1-yard score. Nicholls had to punt on its next possession, and then a 4th-and-10 attempt at midfi eld came up short, giving SFA the ball back with fi ve minutes to go. SFA tacked on one more touchdown to make the fi nal. The Colonels were led on defense by senior Davin Bovie, who racked up a season-high 19 tack-les, which was four shy of tying the program record. Nicholls also had a season-high four tackles for loss, and Ronnie Walker came up the team’s fi rst sack of the year, which forced a turnover-on-downs in the fourth quarter. The defense looked to be in for another long day on the opening drive as SFA scored on a 1-yard run by Johnson. But the team rallied back in the quarter, holding the Lumberjacks to a punt before Byron Cobb came up with a pass breakup to force a turnover-on-downs. Early in the second, SFA drove down to the Colonels’ 5-yard line, but Josh Dewey came up with an interception in the end zone to keep the score at 7-0. The offense then responded with a 96-yard scoring drive, getting long runs from Henry and Lofton before Henry punched it in on 3rd-and-goal at the 1 for his fi rst TD of the season. In the third quarter, Johnson gave SFA the lead with a 34-yard touchdown scamper. However, Lofton made a great read with two blockers ahead of him, cutting it inside before sprinting down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown. The Colonels had their extra-point blocked, keeping SFA ahead at 14-13. A 48-yard run by Johnson set up another touchdown run by Conque, and a costly fumble by the Colonels on the ensuing kickoff led to another Johnson score, making the score 28-13 in the third. But a big kick return of 36 yards by Keenan Canty led to Henry’s 41-yard TD to end the third. While Nicholls ran for 258 yards, the team struggle in the passing game, fi nishing with 128 yards on 12-of-28 by Kalen Henderson. The senior was able to avoid the rush, being sacked only three times and added 18 yards rushing. Eight different Colonels had receptions, with Henry (34 yards) and Canty (13 yards) fi nishing with three each.

game 8: lamar 63, nicholls 21oct. 18, 2014 in thibodaux, la.john l. guidry stadium

THIBODAUX, La. – Nicholls had three interceptions on defense and scored its fi rst special teams touchdown of the season Saturday against Lamar, but the Cardinals racked up a school record 691 yards on offense to hand the Colonels a 63-21 loss on Saturday evening at John. L. Guidry Stadium. Nicholls falls to 0-8 on the year and 0-4 in Southland play after suffering its 14th consecutive loss. The setback was also the Colonels’ fourth straight loss to Lamar, which improved its record to 5-3 and 2-2 in conference. With the win, the Cardinals up their series record to 6-1 against the Colonels. The Colonels were held scoreless for almost the entire fi rst half as Lamar led 42-0 late in the second quarter. But a 21-yard touchdown pass from Kalen Henderson to Xavier Marcus put Nicholls on the board with 33 seconds left in the quarter to send the teams into the locker room with LU lead-ing 42-7. Lamar added three more touchdowns in the fi nal thirty minutes, and Keenan Canty provided the scoring for Nicholls as the senior scored twice in the second half, highlighted by an 83-yard punt return in the third quarter. Along with Lamar’s record-breaking day on offense, the Cardinals smothered Nicholls on of-fense, holding the Red and Gray to just 155 yards. The Colonels fi nished with 118 yards passing and only netted 37 yards on the ground. Although Nicholls had only one turnover, the offense accounted for just 13 fi rst downs and averaged 2.6 yards per play. Henderson started the game under center, completing 7-of-18 passes for 58 yards and one score. He faced heavy pressure in the fi rst half as Lamar recorded fi ve sacks, resulting in a loss of 49 yards. Beaux Hebert completed 5-of-10 passes for 49 yards and connected with Canty for 5-yard touchdown in the fourth and Dash Duncan added a completion for 11 yards. While Nicholls had only 37 yards rushing as a team, Michael Henry gained 51 yards on 11 car-ries before leaving the game with an injury. Tobias Lofton added 31 yards on seven carries. Lamar wasted little time in taking the lead as Caleb Berry found Mark Roberts for a 59-yard touchdown with just two minutes off the clock. The Cardinals then moved to the Colonel 23 on their next possession before Byron Cobb halted the drive with an interception in the end zone. However, LU’s Kade Harrington scored on a 19-yard run to cap the quarter for a 14-0 lead. Harrington had a big game for Lamar, rushing for 123 yards and four touchdowns while Carl Harris added 116 yards and one score as the Cardinals gashed Nicholls for 362 yards on the ground. In the second, Berry connected with Reggie Begelton for a 4-yard touchdown to polish off a 98-yard scoring drive. Lamar then tacked on three rushing touchdowns, two by Harrington and one by Gratian Gladney, to take a commanding 42-0 lead in the second quarter. Before the break, the Colonels used a 32-yard screen pass to Henry to set up their fi rst touch-down. On third-and-3, Henderson fi red a strike to Marcus for the sophomore’s fi rst TD of the season. In the third, Harris crossed the goal line from two yards out for the Cardinals to make the score 49-7. Later in the quarter, Canty fi elded a punt at the Colonels’ 17 yard-line, dodged a few defend-ers up the middle and sprinted towards the end zone for an 83-yard touchdown. It was the fi rst punt return for a touchdown for Nicholls since 2008 when Lardarius Webb returned one against Stephen F. Austin. Canty had a solid day for the Colonels, fi nishing with 297 all-purpose yards and two touch-downs. Before the end of the third, Harrington scored his fourth touchdown of the game to give LU a 56-14 lead. In the fi nal quarter, Josh Singleton’s second interception of the game helped set up Hebert’s touchdown pass to Canty. Lamar’s backup quarterback Robert Mitchell scored the game’s fi nal touchdown, running untouched for a 48-yard score. Berry threw for 330 yards and two touchdowns on 27-of-32 attempts for LU, with Robert ac-counting for 148 yards receiving on seven catches. game 10: incarnate word 38, Nicholls 20nov. 1, 2014 in thibodaux, la.john l. guidry stadium

THIBODAUX, La. – Quarterback Beaux Hebert threw for a career-high 209 yards and Michael Henry rushed for 96 yards and a score, but Incarnate Word never trailed in the game and led by as much as 24 points as Nicholls suffered a 38-20 loss on Homecoming. The loss was the Colonels 16th consecutive dating back to last season, putting the team at 0-10 on the year and 0-6 in Southland play. UIW improved to 2-7 and recorded its second win in confer-ence, upping its mark to 2-5. After falling behind 10-0 in the fi rst, Nicholls fought back to cut the defi cit to three points two different times in the second quarter, with the last coming at 17-14. But UIW scored one touchdown before the break and added two more in the second half to lead 38-14 with less than 10 minutes remaining. Hebert then connected with Keenan Canty for a 25-yard touchdown pass to make the fi nal, 38-20. Nicholls tallied 351 yards on offense, getting 209 in the air and 142 yards on the ground. Henry carried the ball 20 times for a 4.8 yard average while Tobias Lofton had 42 yards on four carries. Hebert, who was sacked four times, completed 16-of-29 pass attempts. The Colonels generated three turnovers for the second time in as many home games, but the team had a season-high 12 penalties for 107 yards. Nicholls was also only able to score once off the Cardinals’ miscues, which came in the second quarter when Lofton raced 34 yards for a touchdown two plays after UIW quarterback Jordan Scelfo gave up the ball at midfi eld. Earlier in the game, UIW struck fi rst, putting together a 7-play, 65-yard drive capped on a Junior Sessions’ 1-yard touchdown run at the 8:30 mark in the opening quarter. Ramon Coto then made it 10-0 with a 22-yard fi eld goal. Sessions led UIW’s ground game with 89 yards on 19 carries. In the second, Hebert found Demon Bolt wide open for a 43-yard pass to start the Colonels’ drive, and Henry polished it off with a 1-yard touchdown to make the score 10-7. But on the ensuing kickoff, UIW’s Jordan Hicks ran it back 56 yards, setting up a Scelfo 27-yard touchdown pass to Cole Wick. Scelfo fi nished the day with 260 yards passing and two scores. Byron Cobb then scooped up Scelfo’s fumble to setup Lofton’s touchdown run, which made the score 17-14 UIW. The Colonels then tried on onside kick, but UIW was awarded the ball at midfi eld after an offsides by Nicholls. On a third-and-9 from Nicholls’ 22, Scelfo hit Daryl Brooks for a touch-down to push the lead back to double fi gures at 24-14. In the third, Sessions carried the ball six times on a 9-play drive and barreled in from a yard out to extend the Cardinals’ lead to 31-14. Following a punt, the Colonel defense came up with a huge play when Dwayne Mitchell hit Scelfo as he was releasing the ball, and defensive lineman Andrew Carter intercepted the ball and ran it back 19 yards to the UIW 37. But a sack put the Colonels at fourth-and-17 and the drive ended when Bolt threw incomplete into the end zone on an end around. Joseph Sadler added a rushing touchdown for UIW early in the fourth before Hebert and Canty hooked up for their touchdown. Trailing by 18, Nicholls elected to go for two points and converted on the fi rst attempt, but an illegal block pushed the ball back to the 18. The second attempt came up short, keeping the score at 38-20. Davin Bovie and Ronnie Walker led the Colonels with 10 tackles each, and Walker added a tackle for loss. Senior Toren Joseph had the Colonels’ second interception of the night on UIW’s fi nal drive.

vs southeastern lagame 11: Northwestern St. 48, Nicholls 21Nov. 15, 2014 in Natchitoches, La.turpin stadium

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Coming off a bye week, Nicholls looked rejuvenated at Northwestern State by scoring a touchdown on their opening drive, but the Demons reeled off fi ve straight touchdowns as the Colonels fell 48-21 Saturday night at Turpin Stadium. Nicholls (0-11, 0-7 SLC) remains winless on the season, dropping its 17th consecutive game overall and 13th straight in Southland play. The Colonels’ last win was in 2013 against Northwestern State (6-5, 4-3 SLC), which improved its all-time record against Nicholls to 27-15. Michael Henry rushed for a career-high 146 yards on 29 carries for the Colonels and scored the game’s fi rst touchdown as he capped the opening drive with a 19-yard TD run. It marked the third time this season Henry, who headed into the game ranked second in the Southland in rushing, has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in conference play. He enters the fi nal week with 887 yards rushing on the year. Beaux Hebert completed 14-of-23 passes for 113 yards and one score, and Kalen Henderson also threw a late 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nick Scelfo. Senior Demon Bolt led the team with 33 yards receiving on fi ve catches and his 2-yard touchdown catch in the third ended NSU’s run of fi ve consecutive touchdowns. The Colonel defense had no answer for Demon quarterback Zach Adkins, who threw for fi ve touchdowns and 180 yards on 17-of-20 passes and ran for another. Adkins and the NSU offense tal-lied 479 yards, with the majority coming on the ground as they fi nished with 300 yards rushing. The Demons averaged 6.2 yards per carry, led by Daniel Taylor with 80 yards on 11 carries. Things looked promising for Nicholls after its fi rst drive, which saw the Colonels take a 7-0 lead after one of their most effi cient drives of the season. Hebert completed three passes for over 10 yards each and Henry fi nished the drive, diving into the end zone on his 19-yard score. Northwestern State answeed with Adkin’s fi rst TD pass of the day, and after a Colonel punt, Gar-rett Atzenweiler punched in a 1-yard touchdown for a 14-7 NSU lead. In the fi nal two minutes of the quarter, the Colonels missed on tying the game as Hebert’s pass to a wide-open Stephen LeBouef fl ew an inch too far from LeBouef’s outstretched fi ngers. NSU pushed its lead to 21-7 after its next drive in the second quarter, and the Colonels missed on another opportunity to cut into the defi cit. A poor punt by the Demons gave Nicholls great fi eld position, and a 16-yard completion to Darryl Watson set up a fi eld goal. From 34-yards out, Francisco Condado booted the ball off the upright, keeping the score at 21-7. With 28 seconds remaining, Adkins hooked up with Cody Jones for a 24-yard touchdown, giving NSU a commanding 28-7 at the half. In the third quarter, Jones caught another TD pass for the Demons, this one for 10 yards. The Colonels made the score 35-14 when Hebert found Bolt for a 2-yard touchdown, but NSU took ad-vantage of a 57-yard kick return to add another Adkins touchdown pass for a 42-14 lead. Both teams would score a touchdown in the fourth to make the fi nal score. The Colonel defense was led by Kameryon Brown with eight tackles while Lazarus Ona forced a fumble and Cole Frazier picked up the team’s second sack of the year.
