NEWPORT EAST CANDIDATE SIGNS CLEAN CAMPAIGN PLEDGE

LISTENING TO NEWPORT EAST

Newport East Conservatives have selected Nick Webb as their candidate for the National Assembly for Wales election in May.

Nick, a 31 year old public affairs consultant specialising in planning, grew up in Pentyrch where his family still live. He has signed a clean campaign pledge, promising to run a positive campaign based on real issues rather than rhetoric.

Nick said “I think it is vitally important that voters are engaged by an honest campaign, and not turned off by the less pleasant face of politics.”

Fewer than 1,900 votes separated the three main parties in Newport East at the last Assembly Election.

In addition to the constituency vote, electors will also be able to vote for Welsh Conservatives on the regional list where our team of candidates is headed by experienced Assembly Members William Graham and Mohammad Asghar.

PROTECTING NHS SPENDING David Cameron has ringfenced NHS spending in England. The Scottish and Northern Ireland Governments have also protected health spending.

The Welsh Assembly Government has not made such a pledge and Nick Webb and the Welsh Conservatives believe that they are making a mistake. Nick said, “There is no escaping the fact that budgets are very tight at the moment, but that makes it even more important to get the priorities right”.

Welsh Conservatives would:• Protect the health budget in Wales for the next four years. • Invest £6 million into dedicated stroke services. • Appoint a Public Health Minister with responsibility for improving health outcomes for the people of Wales.

CAMERON RIGHT TO TACKLE THE DEFICIT

Nick has spoken out in favour of the tough action that David Cameron and George Osborne are taking to tackle the deficit. He says, “The country has been living beyond its means. Labour’s legacy was interest payments on the national debt running at £120 million per day. This is money the Government should be spending on services, here in Newport and across the UK. Nobody is pretending this process is easy, but the problem had to be tackled now or the debt was simply going to get worse for future generations. There is finally light at the end of the tunnel.”

SUPPORTING SMALL BUSINESSWelsh Conservatives have pledged to abolish business rates for all small businesses with a rateable value below £12,000. This would take the vast majority of Welsh small businesses out of these charges entirely, and would make a real difference in Newport.Nick said,"Helping small business to flourish will be a big part of getting the economy back on track and in securing the jobs of many people in Newport East."
