Well folks, we have a full entry for this year and so you are in for a real treat of some epic battles coming through across all the championships! Over the last five years, with the help of our sponsor, Nicky Grist, we have built the rally to be a highlight in the season for both the competitors and spectators; and we are striving hard to make sure, each year, we improve the experience for all of you.

As you are all aware, there is a focus on safety, particularly spectator safety, across all rallies in Britain. As our sponsor said in his newsletter ‘we need to abide by the changes or lose rallying’. So please take time to read our section on spectator safety and heed the advice, so that we can all have a safe and enjoyable rally.

There are four main Championships with us again, the BTRDA, the Welsh National Championship, the Welsh Historic Championship and the FMP Rally Challenge and looking through the entry list for the Nicky Grist Stages we can see that pretty much all the top contenders will be out in action for you and so there could easily be some hiccups in the leader boards after today.

And what a place to watch the action from but on Route 60, where you can see the cars coming right down the valley. There aren’t many places as good on any rally and certainly it is Nicky’s favourite spot to watch from. Howard Davies will again be on hand to regal you with his thoughts on how well people are doing – an experience in itself! There will also be a catering van and toilets provided for you as well. For those who would prefer, Halfway also has a dedicated spectator zone. Maps of the spectator stages and access points are included in this programme.

Finally, a BIG thank you goes out to all involved with the Nicky Grist Stages, to all competitors, who support us by coming to the rally year after year, to all those competitors new to the Nicky Grist Stages, we hope have a successful and fun fuelled day; to all the volunteers from marshals, stage commanders, timing crews, service crews, rescue crews, first aiders, radio commanders; to our partners, the sponsors, the landowners and local authorities, and especially the local people, living around the rally……the list goes on and on and we are immensely grateful for all in not only ensuring the Nicky Grist Stages happens, but is also such a fantastic event. THANK YOU. We make a dynamic team and long may it continue.

As always, the proceeds of the programme sales go, totally, to local charities and not to the rally organisers. It is important to us that we are able to offer something back to the local community and so, thank you for purchasing this programme and being with us today.

Also make a note in your diary for Friday 24th July when the Special Stage programme on Motors TV will show all the highlights of the BTRDA side of the event starting with the 1400s/Rally First at 8.30pm and then followed by the Gold Star and Silver Star competitors at 9.00pm.

On another note, the Quinton Motor Club lost two of our team this year, both very active and enthusiastic members. The first, Mike Stratton died after a short illness. Mike and his wife, Hilary helped in so many ways and were among the first to welcome new people to their passion of rallying. Our other loss was Peter Fieldhouse, who, with his distinctive moustache and immense knowledge of rallying was known to many. Peter was another who welcomed any new to the world of rallying, and was always happy to chat about so many names and rallies from the past. Both will be sorely missed and we send our condolences to their families.

!FIRE RISK

At this time of the year the forests and heath-lands are very dry and inevitably there is a considerable risk of fire. The rally organisers, Forestry Commission and Army would appeal to everyone to follow a few simple precautions:

• Do not smoke in areas of risk.• Do not discard cigarettes or matches without ensuring they are completely extinguished.• Do not light any fires or barbecues.• Be careful where you park your car – it is not unknown for hot exhausts to set fire to dry grass.• And please take your entire litter home with you, Thank you.

Please remember that if the Fire Services have to be called out it will almost certainly delay the rallies progress and could lead to the stage(s) being cancelled.

The event will be held under the General Regulations of the MSA Limited (incorporating the Provisions of the International Sporting Code of the FIA), these Supplementary Regulations, any written instructions that the organisers may issue.

Page 5: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015

Welcome to the 35th running of Quinton Motor Club’s forest stage rally. For the fifth year running we are delighted that Nicky Grist is our sponsor and so we can continue to call our rally The Nicky Grist Stages, We are extremely grateful for his knowledge and enthusiasm in ensuring we put on, what we believe, is the best national rally in the country.

We are again joined by the BTRDA Championship and are delighted to see them having such a good year. We are also joined again by the Welsh National and Historic Championships and the FMP Rally Challenge. We have a full entry to the rally this year, so we are sure to have a really good day watching the rally.

Safety is a focus for all rally organisers this year and we ask you to please read and take note of the safety section in this Programme. Anyone who disregards our instructions is likely to cause the stage to be stopped and even cancelled. If you see anyone behaving dangerously please report them to your nearest marshal. We wish you all a very enjoyable and safe days motorsport

Neil, Clerk of the Course and the Organising Team

Welcome to the Nicky Grist Stages and my 5th year as sponsor, and what a treat we are in for this year, with a full entry and a good spread of talented drivers across all the championships. This rally seems to have become a potential championship turning point and I am finding that the ones who win here go on to win their championships - Just to add to our viewing pleasure! My thanks to all who make this rally such a great event.

I know that, as spectators, you will follow the instructions on safety in this programme and of the officials around you. In striving to be the best national rally I trust you will also be the best spectators as well, so I need say no more about staying safe. It is so simple – be a responsible spectator or risk the cancellation of stages.

Most of my day I will be watching from Route 60 and being regaled by Howard Davies on the action and I am looking forward to some fantastic rallying over, what are, some of the best stages in the country.

So, stay safe, enjoy the day and Happy Rallying

Ministry of DefenceDIO OPS/TRG Wales & WestSennybridge Training Area

Welcome to the Sennybridge Training AreaWe are pleased that the Army allows the training area to be used for rallying, however, as I am sure you appreciate

the primary function of the area is to provide a realistic training facility to our armed services. To assist in this task

AND FOR YOUR OWN PERSONAL SAFETY please read and observe the following guidelines:

1. Do NOT leave the tarmac roads in the training area.

2. ONLY park in designated parking areas for the event.

3. Do not drive through any barriers left in the down position, whether locked or not, they are there for your own

and others safety.4. Do not interfere with, or get involved in, any military training whatsoever.

5. Do not enter or interfere with any Training Area buildings, installations or equipment.

6. Do not pick up or touch any military equipment or debris. IT MAY EXPLODE AND KILL YOU

7. DO not leave any litter, please take it home.8. Do not light fires. Even in the winter, the undergrowth on the Training Area can be dry enough to present a

significant fire hazard.9. Observe the speed limits set for the roads on the Training Area, they present a challenge to experienced

rally drivers and could well prove fatal to you if driven without due care.

10. The Training Area also contains significant agricultural, forestry and nature conservation interests. Please

follow the Countryside Code at all times.11. In the event of any emergency, please contact an official of the rally or Range Staff or use one of the clearly

marked Range Emergency Telephones (free of charge), which will provide you with a direct line to

Sennybridge Camp Guardroom, who can summon help on your behalf.

We do not wish to labour the above points, but they are important and failure to observe them may

jeopardise future rallying on the Sennybridge Ranges.

We hope you enjoy your days Motorsport on the training area.

From the clerk of the course

A lot has been said recently about Spectator Safety on motorsport events and in particular rallies. Social media has been full of doom and gloom but there are also some glimmers of hope.We need to show those that doubt us that we can manage our sport a n d that we are responsible and aware of our surroundings and so we are asking you for your help.

It’s the intention of the Nicky Grist Stages 2015 to run a safe spectacle for all involved. If you see someone acting irresponsibly ask them to think about their actions, but be calm and polite, the event will cancel stages if need be.

To help make the event as safe as possible a number of cars will travel through the stages to ensure everything and everyone is in place to make this possible. These cars will have warning lights and sirens and will be clearly identified -

You may not see this car, especially on the first run, as it will be travelling around 2 hours before first car, the crew will be looking at the general set up of the stage and distributing last minute paperwork and instructions to the marshals.

Car 00 is manned by the event Chief Marshal and they will be checking that the marshals are inplace and that the timing kit is set up and working properly. The crew will advise earlyspectators of the best vantage points and move those that are considered in a place of danger. This car will enter the stage 60-50 minutes before first car

The crew of this car represent the sport’s governing body, the Motor Sports Association (MSA) they will advise the Clerk of the Course of any issues out on the stages and they can recommend that stages are delayed or cancelled if necessary. They will enter the stage around the same time as the Spectator Safety Car

The crew of this Car includes the Event Spectator Safety Officer. This crew will ensure that thedesignated Spectator Areas are set up in accordance with the plan and ensure that thosespectators outside of these areas are safe. This Car will enter the stage around 20 minutes before first car

This is a competitive Safety Car and will travel the stages at near competitive speed, checking the stages from a competitive perspective. This car will enter the stages 10 minutes before first competitive car

This is the car that travels at the back of the field and checks that the competitive cars have made it through each control, or notes where they are stopped. For the first run through thiscar will also be looking out for Spectators and ensuring their vantage point is safe.

You may or may not see these two cars depending on what happens elsewhere on the event. These Cars contain the two more Senior Officials of the Rally and they have the ability to delay or cancel stages if the Spectators are not in areas considered safe

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE MEDIA HAVE NO PRIVILEGES OVER THE SPECTATOR. IF IT’S A PROHIBITED AREA THEN ITS PROHIBITED TO ALL

We welcome all spectators to the designated Spectator Areas on and around the Epynt Ranges. Admission is only by purchase of a spectator programme (all monies going to local charities via Brecon Rotary Club and Tirabad Village Hall), which will be available as you enter any of the areas.

Military activity will be taking place on the Epynt Ranges throughout the weekend while the rally is taking place. At this sensitive time for the military, it is imperative that all of us use the Ranges sensibly and keep to the areas we have been allowed to use. Spectators being inconsiderate, driving poorly or attempting to watch the rally at points other than those that have been published could seriously affect rallying on MOD land in the future. At all times, please heed any requests from the marshals.

The Nicky Grist Stages event team has embraced the recommendations of the recently published Motorsport Event Safety Review (The Scottish report) Spectator safety is paramount on this event and we are committed to all spectators having a safe and enjoyable day.

No spectating is allowed at locations other than the two officially designated spectator areas on Route 60 and Halfway

At these locations, trained Marshals will be on hand to engage and support your safety. Please ensure you comply with their instructions. They are there to ensure the smooth running of the event, compliance with the safety plan and your wellbeing.

Itinerary of the Day

Please respect all Nicky Grist rally signs and the tape. Yellow and Black is GOOD and provides an area considered to be safe for you to stand. Red and white is a NO GO area and will put you at risk from injury. Any spectators, photographers or marshals seen standing in red and white taped areas will be moved and may potentially cause the stage to be cancelled!

SS2 & SS6 - ROUTE 60PLEASE FOLLOW GREEN SPECTATOR ARROWS Approach and depart only from Llywel (map ref 160/870299) off the A40 and travel up the dual carriageway for approximately 2.5 miles. Then turn right onto the gravel road (map ref 160/871358), where you can park and have a very short walk to the stage.

By standing safely in the Spectator Area up on the hillside opposite the tight hairpin junction, it is possible to see the cars arriving on an uphill hairpin and leave the junction, as well as from the start and mid stage. Commentary, Catering and toilets will be at this location.

NO vehicular access is available at the access areas to the start or finish of this stage or to any other areas of the Ranges. Please help keep rallying on Epynt

SS3 & SS7 - HALFWAY STAGESPLEASE FOLLOW GREEN SPECTATOR ARROWSEnter the Ranges via the dual carriage (as for route 60 above) continue past the entrance to the route 60 spectator area. Turn left down ‘the steps’ and follow the spectator arrows for approx. 1 mile. Car Parking is on an open section of grass land adjacent to the spectator area. DO NOT PARK on the track leading down to the Spectator point. Please exercise caution when approaching this spectator area as you will be travelling against rally traffic coming in the opposite direction.

This point provides great viewing of the cars at speed as they approach downhill before exiting a sharp 90 degree left hand bend.

There is NO access or exit from the A40, near Halfway village.

Five events gone, four to go. As the BTRDA Championship moves into the final part of the year it’s now or never for anyone hoping to claim one of the many varied titles in this very popular Series. As the saying goes “points makes prizes” and a good result on the Nicky Grist Stages can give competitors the springboard if they hope to still be in with a chance by the time the Championship concludes at the Cambrian Rally in Llandudno on the 17th October. Leading the way in the Gold Star section are the Scots pairing of David Weston and Kirsty Riddick. After finishing third last year they aim is to not let the title slip away this year. Five starts and five finishes, including three successive wins in their Melvyn Evans prepared Subaru Impreza, means that they currently hold a 29 point lead and a further haul of points is going to make them very difficult to catch. In second place are Stephen Petch and Ian Windress driving their WD40 sponsored Ford Fiesta WRC, the first of its type to join the Championship last year. Stephen has struggled against the extra power of the Focus’s and a damaged wheel after hitting a rock on the Carlisle stages also dented their hopes of challenging Weston’s dominance. Llanon’s Dylan Davies consistency with co-driver Llion Williams means they sit in third place in their Subaru.

No 1 away this weekend will be Paul Bird and Aled Davies following their success on this event in 2014 when they won by just 3 seconds over Weston. However after a win on the Wyedean and one retirement out of their four events started they sit a long way down the leader board and now need regular wins if they are not to miss out on the Championship title which so narrowly alluded them last year.

In the Silver Star title race, for two wheel drive cars, it’s a whole different set of names from those we have become accustomed in the last couple of years. Double champion Matthew Robinson has moved on to try his hand in four wheel drive, but is sitting out the Nicky Grist, so others are now coming to the front. And for once it’s not the customary Ford Escort but the unique and wonderfully sounding Mazda RX7 driven by Jake Scannell which leads the way, with co-driver Adrian Stevens, and despite a retirement on the Somerset, they have a 7 point lead as well as leading in the BTRDA Historic Cup group. Sitting in second place is the Brettex Fiesta R2 of Rhys Yates who is in his first year in the Championship, clearly demonstrating a high level of experience no doubt aided by his time as a motocross rider. Usual co-driver Phil Hall is competing in Canada so

REIS – RAVENOL BTRDA RALLY SERIES 2015

Page 19: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015

BTRDA 2015 Review

Tom Woodburn has been drafted in to keep Rhys heading in the right direction.

As ever the Kick Start 1400 competitors can’t decide who wants to dominate the title race with a variety of different winners, but the father and son combination of Dave and Freddy Brick from Ludlow have now won the last two rounds in their Nova to lie fourth and on stages they know they are a good bet to make it three in a row. However current title leaders Ryan Weston, [brother to David], who with co-driver Mark McCulloch in their Proton Satria have built up a 10 point lead that they will not want to surrender. But equally as determined will be second placed and fellow Scots Keith and Mairi Riddick [yes brother and sister to Kirsty] in their MG ZR. Others to watch will be York’s Dave Bennett and Alistair McNeil who won this section of the event in 2013. Two wins this year separated by a complete car rebuild of their Corsa has meant they lie fifth, but if anyone can match the pace of the Bricks it will be these two.

The Vital Equipment Rally First Championship continues to show that this formula continues to be the biggest growth area in bringing competitors into the sport since its inception in 2008, which was won then by Dave Bennett and Alistair McNeil now running in the 1400’s. Currently 43 drivers and 36 co-drivers have signed up in 2015 and the race for the Championship is proving as competitive as always. The standard build level of the cars ensures they remain very reliable and bonus points for the smaller capacity 1000cc and 1400cc cars ensures they can keep pace with the bigger 1600cc versions. Torquay’s Chris Wheeler, with Yan Griffiths alongside, has a 3 point advantage at the top of the leader board in their Fiesta MS1 [1.6] with one retirement out of five scores, but running him a close second are Mick Quinn and Neil Carmen in their Nissan Micra 1.0 and Just 4 points further behind is Richard Gemmell in his 1.4 MG ZR but all will be keeping a close watch on fourth placed Neil Andrew and Dom Andrews in their VW Lupo who have taken maximum points on the last two rounds and will want finally to bag the championship win they have missed out on over the last couple of years.

THE EXCITEMENT RISES

The Welsh National championship Review

With three rounds, including today’s event, remaining in the Pirelli MSA Welsh Forest Rally Championship there are close battles to be decided both for the various class titles, the overall Championship and with a free entry on Wales Rally GB National Rally up for grabs, courtesy of the organisers of the World Championship round and their Road To Wales initiative, there is plenty of incentive to go for glory today.

Long-time championship supporter Paul Davy and co-driver Roger Allan, both from Worcester, currently top not only the overall standings but also the Group N category, for less modified cars, in their Subaru Impreza. Paul’s closest rival currently is the winner of the last round, the Severn Valley Stages, Bob Ceen from Malvern co-driven by Birmingham’s Andy Bull in their Subaru Impreza World Rally Car while in third place overall is Davy’s closest Group N rival, Roland Llewellin of Haverford West partnered by Wrexham’s Jamie Edwards.

18 months away from the sport has done nothing to slow Dylan Davies. The Llanon driver, along with co-driver Llion Williams from Caernarfon, claimed a podium placing on the last round in their Impreza to put Dylan into fourth place in the drivers’ championship while Llion currently lies second in the co-driver category.

Fifth placed Hugh Hunter from Ruthin has already taken maximum points twice this year in his Subaru Impreza and is tied on points with Abergele’s Luke Francis. With competitors able to discard their two worst results during the season a late charge up the points table is feasible for either driver.

Other competitors to watch out for as they contest top championship honours on the event include Surrey’s Wug Utting in his Subaru Impreza, Martyn and Dawn England, from Ilminster in their Mitsubishi Evo X and the glorious looking, and sounding, Metro 6R4 of series stalwart Geoff Cottrill from Bromsgrove.

Two non-finishes in the last two rounds have seen Jamie Jukes concede the lead in the two-wheel drive category to Ford Escort driver John Baker and the Suzuki Swift driver from Llandysul will be keen to get his Championship campaign back on track.

2015 has been a bumper year for Championship entries and among the many closely contested categories in the series is the Junior category for competitors aged under 25. Meirion Evans of Llanwrda currently leads the driver standings in his Citroen DS3 ahead of early season leader Morgan Handford, the Cardiff driver campaigning in a Volkswagen Polo.

In the Junior co-driver category, Caron Tomlinson of Penmachno leads by a single point from Ludlow’s Keaton Williams who will be contesting this event in the Vauxhall Nova of Neil Matthews. Llanelli’s Keegan Rees lies one point further back.

The RAVENOL Welsh Challenge gives competitors in all classes the opportunity to win the lubricant company’s products to the value of £3000. It’s currently led by Paul Davy, 9 points ahead of John Baker with Dylan Davies in third place.

You can find out more about the championship on the website, www.wnrc.wamc.org.uk , the championship Facebook page and on Twitter @WnRC.

Page 22: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015
Page 23: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015

The FMP Rally Challenge, now in its 3rd year, was set up with two mains aims. One was to endeavour to create a ‘level playing field’ Championship not reliant on a big budget. The second was to support Wales Air Ambulance. With enthusiastic backing from FMP Motor Factors of Swansea and Port Talbot, both aims are being achieved with an expected total of £3000 being donated to the charity by the end of the year.

There is a prize fund of £1000 and just a £10 registration fee which includes Club membership.

An innovative scoring system where points are awarded for the Class position in the final results, not just among contenders, sees crews fighting for each point earned and prevents them from being able to ‘cruise to a finish’ to gain maximum points if their rivals fall by the wayside.

The Nicky Grist Stages has been an FMP round every year and consistent results see Junior Contender Morgan Handford ahead mid-season. Morgan, who is an aircraft engineer living in Cardiff, renews his early season partnership with Bridgend co-driver Richard ’Shonkey’ Davies in their Promec Land Rover sponsored VW Polo. A possible ‘face of the future’ is Londonderry teenager Jordan Hone whose 2nd in Class on the Plains Rally makes him the current FMP Gravel Cup leader.

This year’s FMP has offered something a little different as promoters Maesteg and District Motor Club have been given permission to allow contenders to select one overseas round of their choice to substitute one of the named rounds. Seven contenders travelled to the West Cork Rally where Gareth Lloyd / Den Golding secured first in class and maximum Championship points. Den joins fellow FMP contender, veteran Terry Brown today in their Valley Services Escort Mk. 2.

Amongst the top seeds a 2nd in class on the Plains takes Dylan Davies / Llion Williams into the Top 10. The crew registered after the first round but are still capable of taking the lead today in their Subaru Impreza. With two outright victories under her belt, Brecon’s Sara Williams, also in an Impreza is expected to do well on home ground.

The Fmp Rally challenge

Page 24: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015

The Quinton Motor Club has been running this event for quite a few decades now and over those decades we have seen quite a few notable names take on the challenge of competing on stages loved by every level of rallying.

To begin we have to go back to 1981 when Tony Pond was at the height of his career. Tony, was a character full of roguish charm, deadpan humour and neat moustache, and as a stalwart British Leyland works driver he won the hearts of the British fans. In ’81 Tony decided to take a brief foray away from his beloved British Leyland and began a drive in a works DTV Chevette. Now up to that time he had only been out on European Asphalt rallies and so, when he was given a spot on the 30th Lombard RAC Rally, he realised he needed to gain some experience on forest stages. In those days to get forest practise you had to enter full rallies, as there was no ability for testing in the forests at all. So with the Quinton Motor Club putting on a 35 stage mile rally in the Forest of Dean in the November Tony came along to get some much needed forest stage experience. His co-driver for the day was Mike Nicholson and Tony found himself pitted against the ‘King of the Dean’ Graham Elsmore. It was a fantastic day for the fans who watched Tony and Graham swap fastest times throughout each stage, but in the end it was Tony who pipped Graham to the fastest time overall. However Tony and Mike deliberately did not book into the last time control and so were excluded from winning, giving the title to Graham and his co-driver, Pat O’Brien.

From the club’s point of view, this was a magnanimous move by Tony and Mike and, by doing so, put Pat O’Brien, as Graham’s co-driver, into the club’s book of records of winners. That year Pat had sponsored the rally for the first time, known as the Nicolet Stages, and so it is a fitting tribute to a man who supported the Quinton Motor Club and the rally for many years.

A few years later in ‘85, another British driver, was in the same predicament, having been given a spot on the Lombard RAC, and needing to test his new works car prior to the event, entered our rally. Although a dedicated Ford man, Malcolm Wilson did spent a few years in the mid 80’s driving for other teams. In 1985 Malcolm drove for Audi Sport UK in the WRC and Austin Rallying, that year, for the Lombard. That was the year the Nicolet Stages was moved to North Wales and the forests of Penmachno and Clocaenog and Malcolm brought the Metro 6R4 out for the first time, with Nigel Harris as his co-driver. The press caught hold of the news and the stages were lined with wall to wall fans, all looking to get a glimpse of their hero in the new British 4x4 car.

A FEW HAVE TESTED THEIR METAL ONTHE NICKY GRIST STAGES

From right to leftTony Pond | Mathew Wilson | Malcolm Wilson | Andreas Mikkelson

Page 25: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015

Unlike Tony, Malcolm and Nigel finished all stages and ended up a good 3 minutes ahead of the rest of the competitors, dominating every stage and giving the crowds a good introduction to the 6R4’s first win on a rally. Malcolm is now one of the greatest and most famous people in rallying, with M-Sport dominating as both a works team in the WRC and as a vehicle supplier to all levels of rallying. There are more than one or two out today! And with the success of M-Sport’s management of the Bentley team on track, Malcolm’s dominance goes from strength to strength.

We then have to wait 19 years for our next famous driver, Mathew, son of Malcolm, who at only 17 was just starting out on his rally career in 2004. Malcolm, by now head of M-Sport was looking for places where his young son could gain rally and car experience in their all new Ford Focus and remembering his own experiences up in North Wales on the Nicolet Stages entered Mathew with his co-driver Scott Martin into what was then called the Quinton Horiba Stages Rally. Young Mathew acquitted himself well on the day, winning the rally outright, ahead of Graham Middleton and John Morgan in their Hyundai Accent WRC. This made Mathew the youngest driver to win the rally since its inception. Mathew now

runs the M-Sport Bentley team having retired from the full WRC calendar in 2012, although he did celebrate his 10th anniversary by taking the R5 out on Rally GB.

However, the youngest title was not to last long, as it only 2 years later a young Norwegian got in contact with the club, requesting to enter the Quinton Stages Rally, despite the fact that at the time of the call he was still only 16 and so couldn’t take his driving test in the UK until a couple of days before the rally started. I think you could say we got an inkling that there was more to this young man than just being a little confident and we agreed, that as long as he passed his UK driving test he could take part in the rally. So on the day of the rally, Andreas Mikkelson turned up waving his driving

test, taken and passed only two days prior to the rally and only a few days after his 17 birthday. Driving a Ford Focus WRC02, with Ola Floene as his co-driver he showed a stunning talent that took the other rally competitors by storm, making him not only the youngest person to win a rally in British National Rally but beating the likes of Andrew Burton, Julian Reynolds and Steve Petch. And just to make sure we didn’t think the win a fluke, Andreas and Ola went onto to win the Coracle, Plains, Bulldog and Cambrian rallies that year, before taking the leap to WRC in 2006 on Rally GB. Andreas has never forgotten us either, and each year one of the trophies we hand out is the Andreas Mikkelson Trophy to the best newcomer on the rally. And so to our last great name, none other than our own Elfyn Evans. In 2013 Malcolm at M-Sport was again on the lookout for rallies in Britain he could use to test his fledgling WRC Academy winning driver in the new Ford Focus R5, launched at the Malcolm Wilson Rally that year. Again he turned to what was now the Nicky Grist Stages, to give the car and driver a good run. The step up to M-Sport gave Elfyn and his co-driver, Daniel Barritt a steep learning curve and with the R5 they also had a whole new car to get a grip of. But the pair came to the Stages very relaxed and excited to get to grips with the car, and no one was disappointed. Although they did not compete on all stages, it was clear from the off that the lads had an extremely quick car, and the time spent with us showed a new level of intelligent and talented driving. As our sponsor, Nicky Grist, said after the rally “those two are heading for the very top – I think we will have a world champion back in Britain soon”

If any of you have watched one of the Wales Rally GB events you may have noticed that you did not see any of the rally cars queuing up at one of the local garages to refuel. So how do they get the fuel they need?

Well, that’s where Vital Equipment comes in. They have been the fuel deliverers to the WRC for a number of years now. Come to that they also deliver the fuel to the BTCC and most of the Isle of Man TT bikes and every round of the BTRDA to name but a few.

Now it seems simple - imagine the call “hi, we need fuel for 100 cars, we will need one lot at service and one up in a remote location over the midday time, we don’t know how much each team will need, oh and the remote location is high in the Mexican mountains, a tiny village in Sardinia or on a dusty track in the middle of Australia.”

Page 29: Nicky Grist Stages Spectator Programme 2015

You can’t just build a garage instantly and pump fuel as demanded – or can you? Well, yes you can and Vital Equipment has perfected the art – not only can the team get to the correct location with all the right amount of fuel, then erect a temporary garage, set up fuel pumps connected to high quality fuel that the cars love, they also can deliver anything the co-driver asks for, from 1 litre to a full tank. They note the amount and let the co-driver know what they have, so the crew can monitor the car’s performance whilst running.

And it is not just the top championships they service – they are here for the Nicky Grist Stages entrants too.

But why? Vital Equipment deliver Carless Hiperflo fuel, which is consistently a cleaner, higher quality fuel designed for performance cars in motorsport – far superior to anything you get at your local garage. This means the cars engines work more efficiently and so are able to achieve a better performance. i.e GO FASTER!

Vital Equipment also sponsor the Rally First people in the BTRDA as they believe in supporting the young crews as they learn the craft of rallying. So watch out for the Rally Firsts and give them a shout of encouragement.
