Why Directional Drilling

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a type of trenchless technology, is a specialist technique for the installation of pipes, ducts. conduits and cables underground with minimal disruption or need for excavation. Using a surface launched drilling rig, pipes can be installed under roads, rivers, railways, runways and even other pipelines without the disruption of traditional open cut works.

The cost savings resulting from the application of this technology, in both direct and consequential terms can be significant. Environmental impact, traffic disruption are all reduced with the added benefit of faster completion times. HDD is used extensively by the water, gas, telecoms and electricity industries because it is a safe, fast, environmentally friendly and cost-effective method of carrying out maintenance and installation works.

The Process

This technique comprises a three stage process. In the first stage a pilot hole is drilled on a pre-designed path. The ability to manoeuvre the drill head, from above ground, to match a pre-planned path is what makes HDD so safe and effective. Once the pilot hole is completed, the second stage enlarges the hole to the required diameter using a cutting tool known as the back reamer. The reamer is pulled back through the pillow hole increasing the hole diameter to accommodate the new pipe, cable or duct. This stage may have to be repeated until the necessary diameter is achieved. Finally, the new pipeline is pulled or pushed through the pre-drilled hole.

Horizontal Directional Drilling Key Benefits:

• Enables pipes, cables and ducting to be installed almost anywhere

• Unaffected by surfaace obstables such as roads, rivers, railways or trees

• Suitable for variety of ground conditions including soil, clay, sands and rock

• Small operational footprint reduces disruptions

• Excavation and reinstatement costs minimised

• Contributes to carbon footprint control

• Accuracies +/- 100mm can be achieved
