etwas anders ticken. Wir arbeiten nicht an Innovationen,
weil eine Messe ansteht. Und was auf einer Messe
steht, muss nicht zwangsläufig neu sein, aber besser;
So
In diesem
baldiges Wiedersehen in 2012.

Verstärkungsblech - nur Deko
oder echte Funktion?
Das Verstärkungsblech am Sitzrohr 1
ermöglicht ein tieferes Oberrohr und somit
mehr Schrittfreiheit. Selbst für eine weit
herausgezogene Sattelstütze, einen schweren
Rucksack und tiefe Schlaglöcher ist das
verstärkte Sitzrohr stabil genug. Sinnvoll
erfordert. Weiterhin müssen Fahrer und
Fahrerinnen von Rahmen in Größe S ihre
Sattelstützen nicht so weit herausziehen, wie
Fahrer größerer Rahmen. Rahmen in Größe S
haben also kein Verstärkungsblech.
Seat tube gusset - just
decoration or real function
The characteristic NICOLAI seat tube gusset
1 has an explicit function: It enables lower
top tube designs and supports the projected
end of the seat tube, while riding with great
extended seat posts. Thus you‘ll find these
gussets on all our NICOLAI mountain bike
frames from size M and beyond. Our small
size frames are not equipped with seat tube
gussets as there is insufficient space on the
small tube projection and also we don‘t expect
our smaller clients to use the seat posts at
the highest adjustment. Please note that the
seat tube gusset often shown on our catalogue
frames is not a decoration or a mandatory
design characteristic. It‘s a functional feature
used on frames bigger than size M.
ION81
As a die-hard BMX rider it took a while to get me on a full suspension. I had already had the opportunity to test the ION14 this year, thus the next step to the ION18 wasn’t far away. Who would have thought that I would dig it from naught to sixty to go rad on full suspension bikes. The ION18 is the perfect all-around toy. Due to the progressive setup similar to that of my 4X ION14, it‘s almost neutral while pedalling, and I could easily climb and do some intermediate sprints. The ION18 is just unmistakably the big brother of the ION14, similar agile handling in technical sections and curves. It offers even greater safety reserves with big jumps and drops. The ION14 already went pretty well on big jumps such as the Pro-Section (watch the Home Speed Home Video www.pinkbike.com/video/206584). What would be possible with an ION18 then? I’m looking forward to the next video project.

„a different world“
Seat angle - effective or virtual
The ION18 seat tube design is different from classic frame designs and doesn‘t end on the BB housing but rather further to the front on the down tube. This re-arrangement of the seat tube position was necessary to achieve enough travel while keeping the chain-stay short at the same time for maximum maneuverability. Also the seat post remains sunken thanks to the continuous seat tube. To adjust the sitting position we have flattened the seat tube angle a few degrees. To show you that a flatter ION18 seat tube is still as suitable for long trail ridings as the steeper one of the Helius AM we have prepared a graphic showing both seat positions. As you can see they have almost identical seat positions once the seat post is extended, which means they have almost the same virtual seat tube angle.
The Cane Creek Double Barrel is currently one of the best shocks on the market. It’s equipped with a revolutionary technology created in collaboration with Öhlins. The adjustment possibilities are just tremendous. The Cane Creek Double Barrel is practically adaptable to all riders, riding styles and bikes.
But how does the Cane Creek Double Barrel work?
The revolutionary „Twin Tube Design“ allows for a constant circulatory oil flow through the valves. Conventional rear shocks just push the oil back and forth. The Twin Tube design completely separates the compression and rebound damping. As the oil flows exclusively through the valves in the head of the rear shock, the damping can be accurately and easily adjusted. In other rear shocks, the oil flows through the piston and through various sets of shims. Using the Double Barrel it’s no longer necessary to do shim tuning. Admittedly this is not a rear shock made for riders who just want to have the easiest possible shock. But tech-savvy riders who want to squeeze the most from their gear, this little baby will be pure joy! Any further questions? Give me a shout. I’d be happy to help you!

ISCG, the Hammerschmidt® adapter and direct mount front mech
Almost all NICOLAI frames are available with adapters to mount shift guides, chainguards, or Hammerschmidt® internal gear cranks. For models where chainguards are mandatory or where the use of Hammerschmidt® cranks makes sense most we offer mounting adapters as a surcharge-free option. We offer three different kinds of adapters. The ISCG 03 1 and 05 2 type is fixed with a bolt between a weld-on part at the frame and the chainguard. The slotted holes enable further positioning as the adjustability of chain-guards is often limited. The ISCG adapters are not compatible with Hammerschmidt. We offer a special weld-on adapter 3 to mount the Hammerschmidt directly onto the frame. This weld-on Hammerschmidt adapter on the other hand is ISCG 03 compatible and can be used for chainguards. Furthermore, you can get a modified SRAM front derailleur mounted directly on the swingarm 4. It’s an unique NICOLAI feature.

GATES NICOLAI Team 4X rider
„damit fahre ich ganz andere Linien“
„I went for the rough lines“
I’ve always been convinced that the ultimate 4X bike is a full-suspension bike. But to me, the difficulty lies in keeping the power and vivacity of the hardtail whilst making the most of the advantage of the rear suspension. The bike needs a compact frame with the appropriate geometry and suspension which combines sensitivity and progression to transmit the rider‘s power into forward momentum. I have to say that the ION14 fits the bill perfectly! The Nicolai Engineering Team have produced a very progressive suspension which makes you feel like you have far more travel than you really have! Together we worked on the stability of the bike (low bottom bracket) and its vivacity (short top tube and chainstay). I have ridden this bike on a lot of 2011 World Cup tracks where I felt it would give me an advantage (Mont Sainte Anne and Champéry for example). And it went well!! I finished 8th in Mt. ste. Annne (for the first ever 4X
Mont
race with this bike) and 6th at the Worlds where the bike allowed me to take some rough lines and make some great moves. I’m totally convinced that this bike can become the reference point for lots of styles including 4X, Dual Slalom and light DH races… It’s why I plan to use it for all the 4X and Dual Slalom in the 2012 season, including the more rolling tracks of the circus. Oh... and I also use it for my all-mountain and fun rides every day! It makes you want to take on some jumps and simply play around on the most uneven ground. It‘s the kind of feeling which makes you ask yourself the question: „If I could only have one bike for all my rides, which one would I choose?“ Well, I guess you know my answer already!

It is the fifth year shooting for Nicolai with the Leica M6 black and white analog photos. Looking at the pictures of recent years, it seems like there have not been major changes in the company over the past few years. The pictures are soaked in preservative black and white. It seems like the documented history and the temporal process of our aesthetic perception has been decoupled. In fact, there are continuous processes and steady developments at NICOLAI, rapid changes as well as growth spurts and staff turnover. On the other hand, there are also roots in the company‘s history, which can not move so fast. In photography, everything comes together both fast and slow, both old and new. Black and white photography combines several parallel events in a moment, and the absence of color clears the time stamp in our perception, so that they appear timeless to us.

Following the Formula One principle we first launched the ION for the world cup racing season 2007 and it quickly became the most successful downhill bike in NICOLAI history. The ION20 has been created for both World Cups as well as national DH racing. If you needed confirmation from the industry of the ION20‘s race proven design; it came by way of being included in Dirtmag‘s prestigious ‚Dirt 100‘, an exclusive selection of the top 100 products of the year. Among the characteristics of ION20 are a low center of gravity, huge travel with substantial progression towards the end, and solid design at the highest aesthetic standards. The frame elements are enriched CNC milled pieces of jewellery that connect with the umistakeable NICOLAI welds; a fusion between technology and a work of art ... yet the ION20 is a pure racing machine.

Being part of the World Cup series is expensive, the battle for honours is extreme. But nowhere else is the riding so fast and nowhere else can we get extensive testing feedback under such high stress. For us there‘s no question of us not being in it. For our riders racing at this level is their life. Our still young DH racer Joris Bigoni (22) is now in his 10th year of racing on Nicolai bikes. The relationship between racing, product development and lifestyle couldn‘t be any closer than this.

The year 2000 heralded the beginning of a wonderful friendship. There it stood, I saw that gearbox bike from Nicolai and I had no idea what it should be. Only on a closer inspection the sophisticated technology revealed itself to me. No rear derailleur, just a shifter on the handlebar and whatelse? No evidence of a derailleur system anywhere. But there were two chains, which met in the middle of the frame and there was the answer to the riddle. It was a gear hub built into the center of the frame. I had only known gear hubs from city or trekking bikes until then, but not positioned like this. The hub axle was the rear-end pivot at the same time, thus the chain could be constantly under tension like on a BMX bike. In short: Perfect chain tension, perfect chain line and a range of gear ratios like a derailleur system. I thought ... I‘m flippin‘ out! Today, twelve years later I‘m still excited about the technology and the absolutely unique riding! The new E2 nucleon (Evolution Vol. 2) is now the flagship of the latest gearbox Nicolai bikes. This model combines all the benefits of its predecessors, such as the established Rohloff ® G-Boxx 1 1 , the COR-rear hub 2 and the modern, versatile geometry of the ION20. Despite the numerous evolutionary steps and the diversity of gearbox bike legacy, for all of these bikes NICOLAI guarantees spare parts supply and service at least for the next 10 years. For the Nucleon E2 I recommend the Cane Creek DB Custom rear shock, specially adapted to the Nucleon kinematics.

Especially in winter time I prefer using the nucleon, as lousy weather conditions and dirt can’t harm the enclosed drivetrain. An absolute carefree bike. A little bit of chain lube and that’s it. The history of Nicolai gearbox bikes is as old as my fascination for the technology pioneers. The first Nucleon already fascinated me with their incredibly complex construction and the “machine look”. With the Nucleon TST Evo 2005 there was a glaring paradoxical example with one of the simplest and most elaborate gearbox bikes in the world. The Nucleon gearbox bikes are for me the first choice when it comes to security and durability. If you take the extra weight into account, you have found a reliable partner for lifetime.
Wahl in punkto Prozesssicherheit dar.

First ride, first experience with the new Helius AM PINION gear box. After the first few turns I already had a very good feeling for the bike. The geometry provides stability during rapid descents, the rear suspension works perfectly, as expected: its base is nothing less than the legendary Helius AM. The Pinion gearbox is very light and reacts quickly to shifting commands. I was pleasantly surprised by the maneuverability of the bike and especially the low weight. The strengths of the PINION gearbox are the speed (reactivity), the lightness and the precision during gear changes. In addition, it has 18 gears and can therefore go for All Mountain, Enduro and Freeride. The drive is simply stunning and is just plain fun even on the climb. I am sure that the Helius AM Pinion is perfectly suited for Enduro.

Verstellbarer Federweg
Adjustable travel
Most Nicolai models have adjustable travel settings but the feedback that we get from Nicolai riders has shown us that most customers just ride their frame the way it is delivered: factory-set at the max travel 1. However, sometimes less is more, so here is something to try. On the Helius AM for example: when you mount the shock one hole lower 2 on the rocker link then the rear travel is reduced by about 12 mm. On smoother trails this will make the bike easier to ride saving you energy and making the bike more efficient on long rides and day trips. Then take a look at the ION20: the factory setting with the shock mounted to the top hole of the rocker link provides 230 mm of travel. When the shock is mounted in the next hole down then the travel is reduced to 200 mm. Most racers actually ride the ION20 in the 200 mm setup and they swear that it is faster that way. Running with less travel has the added benefit of reducing the stroke-to-travel ratio which leads to better, and more direct, damping performance.

Helius dropout standards
On all our Helius models we offer three different dropout standards as no-cost options. Before placing your order you need to decide what kind of rear hub and related shifting system you would like to use or what options you want to keep open. The 10 mm quick release dropout (QR10) is the lightest solution and allows the use of standard hubs with conventional quick releases 1.To use your Helius with Rohloff® hubs we offer the slightly heavier Rohloff® dropouts which have a longer
slot on the left hand side to fit the OEM-1 axleplate of the Rohloff® hub 2. These also accept standard quick-release hubs. For maximum rigidity and the best tracking of the rear wheel we recommend the 12mm through axle dropout option 3. These dropouts can be used in combination with a 12mm axle from Nicolai or the Rock Shox Maxle. You cannot use a 10mm QR or Rohloff® hub with this option.

Two shocks of the same model with the same settings may appear identical from the outside and yet perform completely differently depending on how the internals are tuned. Shock manufacturers offer their shocks in different ‘tunes’ to obtain specific ride characteristics to suit different suspension designs or riding styles. AMT3 Videodreh auf den Miriquidi Trails
Text: Frank SchneiderFotos: Hoshi Yoshida
CITEC stellt hochwertige und sehr leichte Laufräder in Deutschland her. After the huge success of the first two AMT videos it was practically obligatory to go for a third and raise the bar. From Thuringia, where we shot AMT 1 & 2, we‘ve headed over to the trails around Miriquidi Lengefeld in the Erzgebirge only a few kilometers away from the famous Enduro track in Zschopau. This place is the ideal playground for some stunning new video scenes for the next level of AMT. The difference between Thuringia and the Miriquidi trails lies in the the rocks and boulders

scattered hills. Whereas we only found such rocky sections during AMT 1 & 2 on steep slopes in Thuringia, here on the Miriquidi trails the rocky spots were either low lying or on level ground; ideal conditions for riding different lines over a variety of obstacles.Thomas Frenzel‘ Forsthaus guesthouse was our base and Thomas was our wonderful host. Each day he drove us to the spots and ferried cake and coffee back and forth to keep us going . With such 5 star pampering we were able to focus totally on the job in hand.In some passages, my breath was takene away by Marco‘s magic. We overcame man-sized rocks, Marco preferably with a high jump. I preferred the otherway down; jumping. Fallen trees were no obstacle to Marco either. Together we climbed extremely technical climbs, with the biggest challenge not only to climb cleanly, but to be fluent and technically accurate for the film. For the AMT 3 video I used my Helius AM again, ideal for the faster passages, jumps or drops. Since I was in charge of the downhill-influenced part of AMT sections the choice of the bike was perfect, as the Helius AM provides close on the riding comfort of a DH bike. As an optimization, we have redesigned the frame. Thanks to the lower top tube my Helius AM was much easier to handle on trial sections and offered more freedom of movement.

Marco switched to the brand new ION14. The advantage of the bike is the small, agile and extremely rigid frame not to mention the reduced weight. Marco was therefore able pull off bunches of tricks during his ride. Additionally the ION14 enables you accelerate much faster giving you the spring up onto the rocks. The smaller frame with less travel was optimal for increasing the Trials skills. The ION14 took the Technical trail sections and big jumps in its stride. With Marco‘s drop skills no travel seems to be too short. He dropped down the same gaps as I did with the Helius AM, although not at the same pace, but with an equally soft landing. It‘s still a mystery to me how he manages to ride so smoothly ... watch the video and be amazed yourself. This year, we received support from CITEC a manufacturer of high quality and very lightweight wheels in Germany. As evidence of the stability they provided super light CITEC Ascender S wheelsets. The wheels have survived all of our stunts, without damages and you can trust us, we really didn‘t go easy on them. It‘s proof of their quality, despite of the scaringly low number of spokes. We would also like to thank the founder of the Miriquidi Trails and owner of the Forsthaus Frenzel Thomas Frenzel for his hospitality, for his passionate commitment and for his choice of location. A big thank you goes to Christoph Reiner
Boesl from the Reiner Kopf agency, who gave us super functional Arcteryx jackets. Of course, a visit to the Miriquidi Trail is highly recommended. You won‘t find such a density of single trail networks of different technical degrees in Germany. And whoever takes the Miriquidi trails under their tires might bump into one of our film locations.

Bolt on cable guidesOur bolt-on CNC’d cable guides look seriously cool and are available in a range of anodised colours so you can give your frame a personal touch but we should explain the technical reasons that led us to decide on this solution. Whenever a weld is added to a tube, the heat changes the metal structure and leads to marginal weakening of the aluminium compared to its original state. By using a bolt-on cable guide we avoid having to weld the tubing unneccessarily and reducing the strength of the frame. The biggest advantage, however, is the modularity of this system. Through the choice of various designs of bolt-on cable guides, we can offer a number of cable run options. Single mounts, double mounts or offset (double cranked) mounts. The offset mounts can be turned through 180 degrees and, depending on the mounting direction, the cables will leave either at 4 o‘ clock or 8 o‘ clock. This makes for clean bends and gives a perfect cable run when, for example, double Rohloff® cables are routed along one side of the steerer tube. We also have been fitting our Helius frames with special swing-arm cable mounts, in order to minimise the cable bending from the moving suspension. This prevents the wires inside the cable outers coming out of the ends and helps to ensure long term precise shifting without re-adjustment. The black machined Delrin protector on our chainstays is also a cable guide. It both protects the stay and the shifting cable from the chain and with its angled exit puts the cable in a perfect line for the rear derailleur.
The next generation of bushingsSynthetic bushings are manufactured through an injection moulding process. The tolerances in this process are +/- 0.05 mm. This is already a very good tolerance. We always strive to be better than just good and as we‘ve got the technical ability we have started to manufacture our own bushings on our CNC turning lathes. This process gives even closer tolerances for much lower stiction and a perfect grease-gap between the bushing and axle. Since 2009 we have already been manufacturing our own ceramic coated precision-ground bearing axles that are also made to extremely low tolerances. The combination of our new bushings with these axles provides a noticeable reduction in play. This means we now need less preload on the bushing unit, giving a lower breakaway torque which in turn means a more sensitive response from the rear suspension.
A decisive role is played by the material characteristics of the different materials used to manufacture synthetic bushings. Materials with superior lubricating properties sometimes have a strongly hygroscopic character that can be between 1% and 5% of the material volume. So while the bearing is running freely under dry conditions in might expand with higher air humidity. In contrast the synthetic bushing material we‘ve chosen has got a humidity absorption of max 0,3%. This leads to a consistently high performance regardless of the weather conditions when you’re riding. In order to improve the bearing characteristics further we‘ve chosen a synthetic material with a molecularly embedded lubricant which provides superior performance with a friction coefficient of μ 0,2.
In addition to humidity absorption and friction coefficient, another important consideration for bushings is the resistance to abrasive wear. The bearing material we‘ve chosen provides the best ratio of friction coefficient and resistance to abrasive wear of any material currently available. We ask you to understand that we’d like to keep the name of our new wonder material a company secret.

135x12 bolt-through systemMost Nicolai frames are now compatible with the bolt-through system. For a number of models this has already become the standard or it is available as an option without an upcharge. Bolt through hubs are stiffer than quick release hubs and there are now a lot of capable hubs and wheelsets on the market at fair prices. That’s all common knowledge but we would like to explain why we‘ve decided on the 135x12 mm system in particular (150x12 for ION20). QR-10 quick release hubs make still have a small advantage in weight so it‘s still preferable to use them for XC and marathon riding where, normally, loads are not extreme. However, with a QR-10 rear hub the interface mainly relies on friction between the hub and dropout - the quick release lever itself is not able to have any real impact on the stiffness of the rear. That is why, for intense bike use in rough terrain, we recommend the bolt through system. The Nicolai bolt through system through is designed around the common 135x12 mm standard. Rear hubs of this standard have
got an end-to-end hollow axle with an outer diameter of 18 – 20 mm and an inner diameter of 12 mm. When the bolt is attached the hollow hub axle is pressed with positive locking force between the drop outs so that the rear hub, and the bolt itself, become integrated, load-bearing, components of the frame. This makes the whole rear end of the bike perceptibly stiffer. Compared to other rear axle systems, which use a fine pitch thread, the Nicolai design comes with a regular metric 12 mm thread that allows easy and hassle-free mounting even in sandy or muddy conditions. The only tool required is a 6 mm Allen key. If the axle once should sieze after a long period of non-use, or if the 6 mm inner socket should round off, the Nicolai axle can also be released and mounted with a 17 mm ring spanner. Last, but by no means least, the Nicolai bolt through system is fully compatible with the Rock Shox Rear Maxle® standard.
Head tubes and the CANE CREEK Angleset®
We use three different head tube standards on Nicolai frames. 1 1/8, one-point-five (1.5) or tapered (1 1/8 topside, 1.5 downside). Most Nicolai frames are equipped with the 1 1/8 head tube as standard as this is the most common size provided by fork manufacturers. The Helius AM and ION18 models have a 1.5 head tube as standard. All other regular frames are built with the 1 1/8 head tube though we offer the 1.5 or the tapered head tube as an optional extra. For 1.5 head tube frames we now offer an additional option: these frames can now be delivered with a Cane Creek Angleset® fitted. With this headset the head angle of the bike can be altered by fitting different angled cartridges and this allows you to adjust the head angle up to 1,5° slacker or steeper in six steps. A precisely machined head tube and accurately aligned bearing cups are essential for perfect function of the Angleset. For this reason we only offer it fitted by our professional machanics at the factory.

AC
1
„Leichtfüßler“by Moritz Mussmann
„The flow-keeper“
I‘ve reached a clearing and need to take a breather. Sweat runs down my brow and washes out of every pore. My legs are burning, I’ve been very close to the limit now ...But this bike leaves me no choice;it starts up when I only touch the pedals and accelerates almost as quickly as my XC hardtail. It pushs me into every corner of the singletrack, whether narrow or wide. This maneuverability is simply fun and I have to keep pedalling in order to keep flow before the next climb. My heart beats up to my neck. At the end of the climb there is a bony, thick root, that tries to steaI my speed ... but not with me! I quickly push myself into the suspension and hop over it. Bad luck for the roots. Now comes the sloping hillside, steep and dotted with some thick roots. So pressure on the tire wall and let the suspension operate. Now come a couple of big beautiful berms before finding myself back at a clearing again. My pulse goes slowly down and I’m wondering what am I supposed to write about this Helius AC ...Is the Helius AC an All Mountain Sports, an All Mountain Plus or a lightweight enduro bike? Well, I think everything. For me it‘s simply a mountain bike that gives me the maximum pleasure on ambitious singletrails. It’s light enough to be a good climber and offers enough safety reserves for fast and technical descents.
That’s exactly how the perfect mountainbike should be.

RADOAn allen Rahmen (außer dem Ro20)
montieren wir rechts ein formschlüssig
verschiebbares, austauschbares
Ausfallende zur Spur- und Sturzeinstellung.
Durch die unterschiedlich gefrästen,
rechten Ausfallenden zum Justieren des
Sturzes muss das Heck nach der Montage
nur noch gering nachgerichtet werden.
Das entlastet das Material. Die jeweilige
Sturzhöhe ist mit den Ziffern 0, 1, 2 oder -1
und -2 in das RADO eingefräst. Nachdem
Spur und Sturz eingestellt sind, wird das
RADO ab Werk mit einem Stift fixiert. So
ist die Originaleinstellung beim Austausch
leicht reproduzierbar.
Welche Probleme hattest Du damit?
Vielleicht Rückenschmerzen, schmerzende Knie oder ein Stechen
im Nacken? Als nächstes wollen wir Deine Körpermaße
und Körpermasse wissen, also Deine Größe, Deine Schrittlänge,
Deine Armlänge und Dein Gewicht. Welche Sitzposition
bevorzugst Du? Hast Du gesundheitliche Probleme? Was willst
Du mit dem Bike machen? Cross Country-Rennen fahren oder
Freeriden? Lockere Touren oder steile Trails? Welche Teile willst
How to order a custom or tailored frame?
If you order one of our tailor made frames then the communication
about the technical details should always be between the Nicolai
engineer in charge and the future rider. Of course you can order
and buy a tailored frame at your local licensed dealer, but for
all technical aspects and details regarding this order we here at
Nicolai are your direct contact. So after we‘ve got in contact we will
first ask you why you think that you need a custom frame at all.
Usually the reasons have developed from past experiences with
other frames. What bike have you been riding so far? What are the
exact measurements of it? What kind of worries and problems did
you have with that bike? Backache or aching knees? A stiff neck
perhaps? These are the first things that we should discuss. Next
we will ask you some details regarding dimensions: Your body
size, inseam, arm-length and your weight. What riding position do
you prefer? Do you have any specific requirements? We will then
find out what you are going to use your new bike for: cross country
racing, relaxed tours, challenging trails - or maybe freeriding is
your thing? What forks are you intending to fit to your bike? What
components do you have in mind? We often find that with analysis
of the first three points we come to the conclusion that one of our
regular Nicolai frames with carefully chosen components will
put things right and custom geometry is not actually required.
However, if we come to the conclusion that we can‘t meet your
demands with a standard frame then we will work out a bespoke
tailored geometry for you. Of course it is also possible that you
are particularly technically skilled, a professional rider, or just
know exactly what geometry or features you require. In that case
we will ask you for a technical drawing containing a complete set
of geometry data. We will, of course, assess your design for any
issues with components that we are aware of and for technical
feasibility, and advise you accordingly. However, if the frame is
completely you your specification we cannot be held responsible
if the final outcome does not work as well as our custom tailored
frames. When we build a tailored frame for you we make a technical
drawing containing all geometry details and we will send it to you
for your confirmation. You will then have the opportunity to make
any final changes or resolve any unanswered questions. We won‘t
start building your frame until you give us the go-ahead and have
confirmed your personal tailored geometry. Independently from
agreeing the technical details it is best to place a formal order to
set a production slot for your frame so it can be built without too
much delay. Technical details and questions can still be resolved
during the period between order placement and production date.
right aligning dropoutAll NICOLAI frames except the
Ro20 are equipped with form-fitted,
re-locatable and exchangeable
dropouts to adjust the toe and
camber at the rear end. Using the
adjustable RADO dropouts allows
us to reduce the rectification work
on the frame which also means
less stress on the material. The
right side dropouts are marked
with the indices -2, -1, 0, 1 and 2 for
different camber adjustments. The
RADO is fixed with a pin after the
correct toe and camber adjustment.
In case you need to replace the
RADO make sure to check the
corresponding index number. The
correct number ensures the correct
toe and camber adjustment even
after replacement.
The Nicolai Helius AC29er is an effortlessly solid trail bike that is a dream to ride. It easily tames rugged terrain and makes every aspect of each ride more enjoyable. The stiffness of the frame allows the bike to be very responsive to pedal input and track great through corners. The controlled suspension cycle feels buttery smooth and almost bottomless. This bike climbs like a mountain goat, climbing jagged square ledges and rocks with ease. It rolls over holes, roots and ledges like they don‘t exist. Handling is nimble yet stable and confidence inspiring on a myriad of terrain. Whether slow, rocky chunk, or fast smooth single track, the Helius AC29er is up to the task. Add the above to the flawless Nicolai build quality and you have the best full suspension 29er trail bike I have ridden.Thank you Nicolai for building my dream bike.

HELIUS AC
29“
Schick gemacht in Eloxal Grün. Und mit Extra Love, you know what I mean?
„meditative monologue“by Krzysztof Bialczyk (Reset Racing)
Most catalogs are for me nothing but a collection of naked figures and facts. Data, dimensions and weights til you go crazy. That‘s not cool, not with me! Bicycles are emotions for me, so is cycling. I prefer letting these feelings speak, they just say a lot more and they stay much longer in my head than those numbers from a catalog ...
And we have experienced quite a lot in common, my Helius RC and me. I don’t want to miss not single minute of our time together. Whether in the mud, snow or rain, whether up or down, whether roots or rocks, I always want more of them, I never get tired. Only the asphalt road is a no go. Helius, you‘ve forgiven me so many mistakes, and you have suffered so much, so much more than you are allowed to - without complaining at all. No, you did not deserve the asphalt road, oh no, you‘re not made for it: Rock and roll instead of soul music!Someone wrote about you: „Race and Marathon Fully - light without levity,“ somehow it‘s true, but it is also very modest, or rather complete understatement. Yes, understated, that’s the correct term.
... and not to forget my coffee after the tour, the Helius put back to its place of honor in the kitchen. This is my way to recap what happened, to review the experienced and to think about the next tour. All over again.
„meditative monologue“by Krzysztof Bialczyk (Reset Racing)

Bushings or axle
For fitting the shocks we use two different mounting kits. For an overall width up to 25 mm 1 we use aluminium bushings pressed into the shock’s bearings from both sides. For wider fittings 2 we only use a steel axle. If bushings were to be pressed in a wider fitting there is a risk that under peak loads the bushing deforms with the result that the shock mounting bolt bends or breaks. A full width steel axle is capable of carrying even the highest peak loads safely.

Trotz vollem Produktionsplan.
Production planning and lead times– behind the scenesWith the large number of Nicolai models in the range we group manufacture the same models for efficiency. On the Nicolai website at www.nicolai.net under “Service/Production Plan” you will find a link to the current production plan showing which model we are planning to manufacture in each week and how many production slots are still available. If it’s the case that the production plan shows no more free slots for the next 8 weeks then that does not always mean
that you‘ll then have to wait a long time for a frame. Our licensed dealers and distributors often place pre-orders and carry stock of common frames in an unfinished condition. This means that you can often get a frame in your desired colour and configuration within a few weeks even when the production schedule is fully booked.

One big advantage of single-unit manufacturing when compared to bulk production is the ability to choose from a broad range of details and options for your Nicolai in order to build your completely customised dream bike. You can choose from lots of colours and finishes, as well as different rear axle standards, shocks, head tube designs, shifting options and cable guides. The pages of this catalogue show only one possible option for each frame model. In order to let you know which options are available and recommended for each Nicolai frame, we‘ve added web links to the model‘s Tech Sheet. In order to simplify the frame ordering process we‘ve created the Nicolai order generator for you: http://builder.nicolai.dbap.de. If you are in Germany then you or your licensed Nicolai dealer can easily click trough all the options that are available for a given frame and with another click send the filled in form directly to our sales staff. Outside of Germany you can still use the order generator to spec your frame and see the options available but then your dealer should place the order through the local distributor.

What some people might not know is ... We‘ve been building custom made 29er frames for several years now. That‘s how we‘ve learnt quite a lot from our customers, fans and freaks, about what‘s important and what‘s not. Based on their feedback, we have been able to design standard sizes for our 29“ Argon frame.
The new Argon 29 RoCC has already been proven in many races like the 24-Hour Race and the Single Speed - World Championships. The main characteristic for hardtails is maximum propulsion with minimal, negligible loss of pedal power. The 29er also combines comfort, safe handling and agility giving you a completely new hardtail feeling compared to conventional 26“ bikes. The Argon 29er has the necessary safety buffer on rough terrain and allows a speed you would only dare to ride on full suspension bikes.
The Argon CC 29 is a derailleur only model. The argon RoCC 29 has adjustable and interchangeable dropouts. You have the choice between Rohloff, single speed and a derailleur system. Of course you can also get the Argon RoCC Carbon Drive ready. If all these options aren‘t enough, we also build your custom dream 29er.
What I like about my argon RoCC 29 „Gates Carbon Drive are the beautiful, handmade CNC machined parts; they‘re unique.

ARGON ROCC
29“
Somehow I have a soft spot for single speed
bikes. I‘ve been nothing else other than fixed
gear for many years now. I like the purist way
and as I like to put it i
n my own words: „Things
can’t break when they’re not there.“ My most
recent project has driven the whole thing
further still . The goal is a single speeder with
road racing genes. Light, uncompromising,
and fixed. My choice? Of course, an Argon Road
frame, which is Gates Carbondrive compatible
and the frame can be tailor made as well. A
n
ideal platform for my requirements. For the
rest of the components I chose a lot of carbon:
Handlebar, seatpost, saddle and fork all made
of carbon fiber. The Gates Carbondrive pushes
down the weight below 8 kg, despite the heavy
high-profile rims. The gear ratio of 55:20 teeth
with a cadence of 125 rev / min puts out a
leisure speed of 40 km/h. My first ride left a
satisfied grin across my face. Thanks to the
super rigid frame and the Gates Carbondrive you
feel every watt of pedal power getting converted
directly into acceleration. Furthermore, the
absolute silence is thrilling. No chain chatter, no
switching noise. The only thing that penetrates
your ears while riding is the wind and the
tire noise. But in spite of all th
is purism I will
probably still install a brake on the fro
nt wheel.
A rapid deceleration from 40 km / h is otherwise
nearly impossible. Safety first!

ARGON Road
GATES SINGLE SPEED
Safety first!

Gates Carbon Drive
Gates Carbon Drive
The Gates Carbon Drive is no longer a novelty. Working with our Partner company Universal Transmissions, the US manufacturer Gates has made this carbon fibre reinforced belt drive a real alternative for bikes as it can be used with all common rear hub standards. Many manufacturers are now offering models with the Carbon Drive system but the first bikes on the road came from our factory. We’ve maintained this lead in development and offer a perfect adaptation of Gates CD for all Nicolai hardtails. What are the particular advantages of the Gates Carbon Drive? Firstly, with the Carbon Drive you will never have to oil your chain as the system is dry running. No more corrosion, no more rattling or squeaking, no more greasy, dirty fingers when mounting the wheel. The carbon drive leaves all the old annoyances of chains behind and at the same time it provides a longer life time than a unmaintained chain. With a weight of only 80 g it brings a significant reduction in weight. The Carbon Drive is made of high-tensile carbon fibres embedded in a resistant polyurethane synthetic cover that enables a completely new riding experience. With the Carbon Drive the rider’s energy is transferred directly into forward motion with no “rubber band” sensation. So, when are you going to make the switch?
Gates ready?
In order to fit a bike with the Gates Carbon Drive system, certain technical requirements must be met. The frame needs a break in the drive side of the rear triangle in order to insert the belt as the belt cannot be split. To achieve this we‘ve designed a low profile removeable part above the right dropout. A Gates frame also needs the ability to tension the belt. For this we use horizontal drop outs that slide precisely in grooves on the frame. These have “chain tugs” adjusted with a hex socket to simplify rear wheel alignment and easily set the perfect belt tension. For correct operation of the Gates Carbon Drive a precise belt line is essential. Unlike a chain, the Carbon Drive cannot cope with any mis-alignment - only perfect frame alignment and a bottom bracket axle and rear axle perfectly in line will give trouble free operation and a long belt life life. Our close R&D partnership with the Gates company during the design of the Carbon Drive was the ideal way to bring this technology to the public. This means we can guarantee the perfect function of the system when used with a Nicolai frame.

BMXTB RACE
BMXTB burst onto the scene in1996 and has gone through many stages of evolution. One characteristic that has remained to this day, however, is the VCS square profile rear end. In contrast to the robust dual slalom and dirt jump forefather the current BMXTB Race is a well-trained athlete carrying no extra around the middle. At the heart of this athletic build is the HWT Yoke (Hollow Weld Technology) 1 between chainstay and main frame, made of two hollow CNC machined pieces, welded together. Those redundant few grammes at the Gates Carbon Drive compatible dropouts 2 have also been shaved off.The training paid off in 2011 with the best ever World Cup result in Nicolai history; David Graf 3 took his BMXTB Race onto three 4X World Cup podiums, twice to 2nd place. But BMXTB Race is not only at home on World Cup podiums, it feels equally at home on the pump track and dirt jumps. Frank Schneider from Gates Carbon Drive is used to testriding the latest drivetrains on a pump track while his team-mate Marco Hoesel, (6x Trial World Champion) appears in shows and on television on his custom built BMXTB Trial.

The prefix “e” is nowadays mandatory in many areas of mobility. The “e” in any name indicates environmentally friendly motorized transportation. The “e” has even reached the world of muscle power mobility products like bicycles. The “e” divides the usually tight knit mountainbike community. For some people, the e-mountainbike is pure pleasure in shredding without having to work out too much. For others, the “e” is the destruction of the mountainbike lifestyle. “e” -Mountainbikes are increasingly on the rise and have become an unstoppable element in the growth of the bicycle industry. This development hasn‘t passed us by either; we are also sat around the table discussing e bikes. However NICOLAI doesn‘t represent the rather controversial positions on this topic. Within our company we have somewhat ambivalent attitudes towards E-bikes. However, we have reached a consensus and established the following key points in the rough specifications:
• An e-mountainbike must remain just as maneuverable as a normal mountainbike despite the additional weight of the motor and battery.
• The electric motor must be quiet • They must be easily ridable even without the motor • What matters is not the absolute system power,
but the balance between excess weight and performance.
Our vision is for the “e” to mean extension. It means that the electric power should be a tool to extend the range or to be independent from chairlifts and shuttles.
So we agreeeeeed on the “e”

“...I just steamrollered over everything that came
across my way. With enough suspension travel, and
big DH tires, you could just ride over any kind of soil
condition, no matter with soft ground, tall grass, mud
or thick scree, everything was easy and relaxed to
pass through, and important to mention: all uphill!”

The Ro20 is an example how being prepared to make sacrifices pays off in the end when the goal is to create a cutting edge product without equal anywhere in the world. The first sacrifice was the price limit mentality. In order to produce a winning product we had to say cheerio to the idea of a maximum selling price. The second sacrifice was for the CNC milling machine. Using an unprecedented dimension we programmed a tapping to take two 20mm aluminium plates down to two lightweight shells for the HWT (Hollow Weld Technology) rear ends. The third sacrifice was made by our welder who had to weld together the thin HWT rear end walls on a circumferential length of more than one meter. You know how hot these thin pieces get, but please “make welds in the usual NICOLAI quality from start to finish”The finished Ro20 is in great company with our top athletes. Currently our top BMX rider David Graf is sacrificing everything in the fight to participate in the London 2012 Olympics; it makes sense that our products represent such sacrifices.

angleVor‘m Wort ...
Trendwort: Nachhaltigkeit. Was kommt wohl
als nächstes? Wir bauen derweil weiter unsere
zukunfts- und wertsicheren Bikes.
Straightness, squareness and parallelism belong
to the design principles of Nicolai products, just
as much as longevity and sustainability do. You
won‘t see the brand Nicolai bikes on the carbon
fibre band wagon as the industry falls head over
heels in love with carbon‘s inherrent limitless
design possibillities. The second buzz word, next
to the trend material, which the marketing arm
of the bike industry is hooked on at the moment
is sustainability. Well, we swear by aluminium for
every one of our products, products which have
a 5 year race guarantee and a 10 year guarantee
of parts availability, parts which in the end can
be recycled. This concept, to which we‘ve been
true for the past 15 years, has, in the meantime
a buzz word; sustainabilty. Here too, we use the
word sparingly and in a recycled form: Nicolai
builds futures and valuable bikes.
