Good TYA = Good TFA

I’m absolutely delighted to be able to present The Giver as my first show at Kennedy Theatre in the role of new “Youth Theatre” guy. You’ll notice that we’re now using the term TYA (theatre for young audiences) to describe what we do. TYA is becoming a popular term in the ‘field.’ But what does it actually mean?

Let me first describe what it isn’t (or shouldn’t be). Good TYA is not the cheesy junk or offensive rudeness that often gets presented to children in much of our culture. That stuff should be avoided at all costs! Good TYA produces the wide-eyed wonder that takes place as young audiences are swept into a compelling story being “lived” out on stage. This means that good TYA should be good TFA (Theatre for All).

As great children’s books are also great books, great theatrical performances for children are great theatrical performances, full-stop.

To me, The Giver is a play about gaining WISDOM. Wisdom is not a term that we commonly use these days. It refers to living right and living well – distinguishing between what is actually good versus what is the accepted way of things. That seems to be a theme well worth spending some time on. I’m so glad that you’ve chosen to do that by attending our production.

Thank you.

Born in Honolulu, Hawai‘i, Lois Lowry is author of more than 30 books for young audiences. Two of her works have been awarded the prestigious Newbery Medal: Number the Stars (1990) and The Giver (1994). Part of the genesis for The Giver came from Lowry’s own childhood experience of living as an outsider in Toyko, Japan. Lowry’s new book, Son, will turn The Giver trilogy into a quartet and will be released in October. Currently she splits her time between a large, old farmhouse in Maine and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
