FRONT PAGE:FRONT PAGE:FRONT PAGE:FRONT PAGE: As we approach Remembrance Sunday, this year is particularly poignant as it marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1. At the Tower of London over the summer, 888,246 ceramic poppies have been placed in the moat, representing every military fatality in the conflict. These are being sold to raise money for service charities.
Dear Friends, I seem to recall that there was (maybe still is) a programme on television call ‘Tales of the Unexpected’, although I didn’t normally watch the programme its title did stick in my mind. How often are we pulled up short by something occurring completely ‘out of the blue’ as we say. Sometimes these things can be very pleasant, but on the other hand can be sad or distressing. Whatever they happen to be, we have ‘in-built mechanisms’ for coping with anything that crops up, to a greater or lesser degree of satisfaction. In recent times I have had a couple of ‘Tales of the Unexpected’, both of which concern birds (of the feathered variety). When I was travelling down the lane to Nun Monkton having just crossed Pool Bridge, there right in front of me was a glorious Peacock, resplendent in all his fabulous plumage. It is not unknown for peacocks to ‘take up residence’ where there is a ready supply of food and a friendly reception from the locals – there used to be a peacock that took up residence at Oaklands - they are, after all creatures that need the necessities of life. But, to come back to my tale about driving down Pool Lane, it wasn’t so much that the bird shouldn’t have been there, it was just the unexpectedness of being faced with such a magnificent creature right there in the middle of the road.
You may have heard in the various sources of news that sparrows and starlings are in decline, numbers are falling for a variety of reasons. However, a ‘Tale of the Unexpected’ has occurred right here in The Rectory garden. This year we seem to have seen more sparrows and starlings than ever, with breeding pairs have more than one brood successfully reared and fledged. On one occasion I stopped counting when I got to more than twenty sparrows feeding and bathing in the front garden. ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ don’t have to be creepy and scary, but can be of the more enjoyable and pleasing nature. Perhaps you can think of such experiences that you have had and maybe reliving them brings you a warmth inside which can expel some of those less enjoyable moments. Perhaps one of the most remarkable ‘Tales of the Unexpected’ relates to Our Lord himself when the Disciples were gathered together with Jesus when He ascended into heaven. That must have been one of those ‘jaw dropping’ moments that are unrepeatable, as the disciples stood there staring up into heaven they didn’t have a clue of what to do or say. Sometimes there just isn’t anything we can do or say, but just be there. A bit like when some of the disciples were with Jesus at the top of the mountain (The Transfiguration) and were unable to decide what to do or say for the best –

their experience was a ‘Tale of the Unexpected’ with knobs on. The disciples had to come back down the mountain and return to ‘normal’ life, and for us, we too have to ‘come back down the mountain’ after we have experienced a Tale of the Unexpected’. Nevertheless, it is only when we allow ourselves to return to ‘normal’ that we are able to share
those unexpected experiences, which enrich our lives and through sharing enrich the lives of those around us.

Val Hackforth writes: A Commemoration of the Outbreak of War on August 4th 1914 was held in St. Michael & All Angels’ Church, Cowthorpe at 11.00am on Monday August 4th 2014. Residents and friends participated in The Churches Conservation Trust’s initiative with the theme “Not Forgotten”, which commemorated the outbreak of the First World War by the laying of a White Peace Lily in each of the 340 churches for which the Trust is responsible.
During the event, which started with the tolling of the church’s tenor bell 11 times at 11.00am, we paid tribute to all those who, a century ago, served their King and Country. We did this by sharing with each other what we knew about the service and sacrifice made by some of our own relatives during the First World War as well as what we had learnt about soldiers whose homes were once in Cowthorpe.
We heard tributes, music, poetry and personal reflections; we shared moments of sadness, joined in the singing of two WW1 songs and recognised that any tears that we shed were an appropriate reminder of the many tears which were shed between 1914 and 1918.
Our commemoration culminated with a period of silent remembrance when a Peace Lily was placed below Private Fred Lancaster’s memorial tablet, a permanent memorial in the church, by his nephew Derrick Whitehead.
One of the contributions to the event was written and read by Cowthorpe resident Mona Horstead entitled, I know...I know...I know...I know...

On Sunday,24 August, 20 residents and friends in 6 teams competed for
the Jimmy Redddall (1908-2002) Memorial Trophy in the 2014 Treasure Hunt, set by last year's winners, Judith and Ralph Cornfield. Starting from the Market Place, teams strolled along an interesting route meandering through parts of Knaresborough which many competitors had never visited, finishing at the railway station.
In addition to 35 clues requiring observation, imagination and ingenuity to solve, contestants had the additional task of spotting, in the correct order, a series of mostly yellow "Grand Départ" bicycles located along the route.
All team members, plus more than a dozen non-competing residents, met at Churchfield Cottage on Sunday evening to enjoy a garden party hosted by Judith and Ralph. The winners, by a clear margin of 5 points, was Team Geemars, pictured below holding the Jimmy Reddall Trophy.

Despite forebodings of rain, Tockwith Show Day proved warm and sunny with very large crowds attending the show.
A large group gathered outside the Church Tent to join in a service of Songs of Praise and to listen to guest preacher Reverend Canon Leslie Morley who preached about the Parable of the Sower and recalled his childhood in a baker’s family which introduced him to the cycle of farming which puts food on our tables.
We were grateful for the musical accompaniment of the Yorkshire Brass Quintet which brought a ‘traditional feel’ to the service.
As usual, the collection taken at the Service, of £185, was donated to the Show President’s Charities.
We are , as ever, grateful to the Tockwith Show Committee for their kind invitation to attend the Show, and also to the team of volunteers who put up our tent and made sure all our visitors were made welcome.

Caroline FenwickeCaroline FenwickeCaroline FenwickeCaroline Fenwicke----Clennell R.I.P.Clennell R.I.P.Clennell R.I.P.Clennell R.I.P.
In 1986, Warren and Caroline Fenwicke-Clennell moved into the former Rectory in Kirk Hammerton, and thereby, began a close and special connection with the community, and the then new United Parish of Lower Nidderdale.
Over the years, Caroline has cultivated and nurtured many close relationships with groups and organisations throughout the district, including The United Parish of Lower Nidderdale, and especially The Church of St John the Baptist, Kirk Hammerton. Whenever you entered the church for a service it was usually Caroline’s smiling face that would greet you, she would hand you the necessary books, and sincerely enquire about you. That is something, which we shall all miss, the way in which you felt the most important person to her, and the genuine way in which she would listen to you.
When a community loses someone like Caroline in such circumstances, it is hard to believe that something like this could have happened or that they have really gone. Caroline was a gracious and serene
lady, and has left behind her a wonderful legacy of love, compassion, tenderness and closeness to all whom she came into contact with. Truly a remarkable lady and a wonderful example of a Christian life.
Caroline did not trumpet her Christian faith, but quietly went about practising what she believed. Her greatest joy was the Book of Common Prayer, and it was to her prayer book that she turned for her daily devotions; her prayer book was not just gathering dust on the shelf.
In the weekly notice sheet for the Methodist Church, Les Hornby wrote these words, which I believe say so much about Caroline:
A life well lived with God as your guide A life well lived with the Church your
cornerstone A life well lived with love for your family A life well lived with concern for others
A life well lived, God bless you
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could all aspire to those attributes? But it is to the words chosen by the family to accompany a photograph of Caroline in the funeral Order of Service that I turn, and how apposite they are; “I’ve learned that people will forget what
you said, People will forget what you did,
But people will never forget how you made them feel.”
We have all been richly blessed in having known Caroline, and commend her to God’s gracious care in the presence of her Saviour, Jesus Christ our Lord. With our love and prayers for Nick, Luke, Katy and all the family.

Joe Cooper writes:
Hooray for September! We are revved up and ready for a fun-packed year at Kirk Hammerton CE Primary School. Thanks mainly to the extended transition period we provided, our thirteen new starters (George, Henry, Amy, Ava, Lyla, Austin, George, Joseph, Olivia, Tilly, Jessica, Charlie and Cassius) have made a super start to Kirk Hammerton - it’s like they’ve always been here!
Class 1 will be getting to know all about the workings of their bodies while further up the school we will look at ‘Invaders’; class 2 will study knights and castles and class 3 will find out about some of the invaders who settled around York (Romans, Saxons, Vikings).
The new national curriculum has a renewed emphasis on history in chronological order so we will build on the success of the banner at Hammerton station with a timeline display around the school hall.
Another exciting strand of learning will see our oldest pupils join up with Staveley (our partnership school) and take part in the Shakespeare Schools Festival. After workshops with professional actors and an intensive rehearsal schedule, the curtain will go up at Joseph Rowntree Theatre on
October 15th for their performance of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’. Kiss me Kate indeed!
We always welcome visitors for our celebration assemblies (Friday afternoons at 3pm - check with the office on 01423 330460).
We also welcome the community to our harvest celebrations on October 24th at the church (time tbc).
A big welcome to Olivia and Lyla !

Head Teacher
Sue Fernyhough reports
What a fantastic summer holidays we had with wall-to-wall sunshine, we could not have wished for anything better! We would like to say a special 'hello' to new reception and to our new teacher, Miss Johnston, who everyone has made her feel very welcome in the first few weeks back.
We have begun our year with a new topic – The Grand Tour. The whole school will be taking a trip to Eureka in Halifax to learn more about what happens under our skin and the journey of food in our bodies,
The children paid a visit to Queen Ethelburga's School to take part in the workshop based on The Musicians of Brenham – a folktale written by the Brothers Grimm. The Reception and KS1 children made animal masks while KS2 learnt how to sing in a round.
We were then treated to a performance of the story accompanied by some string and wind instruments. It was a fantastic afternoon, the children learnt all about how the instruments made music and they were given the opportunity to work with other children from different schools.
We have all been extremely busy making entries for the Nun
Monkton Flower and Produce Show. The children are very proud of their cress egg-heads, which are starting to look very hairy.
The school council is organising a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan nurses on Friday 26th September and are thinking up more ideas to raise money to help this very worthwhile charity.
‘Duckings,’ our parents and toddler group is open again after the holidays. It takes place in school every Friday afternoon.
As a small school we can cater for each, individual child and as we have a high staff to children ratio which gives us the perfect opportunity to get to know your child so well. We can then match the curriculum to their discrete specific needs so every child makes good progress. If you would like to see for yourself what goes on in our school, please phone or email to make an appointment.
