February 2011

Many apolozy for this delay in our English newsletter, the next will be in time.

Of course a lot of news:

We handed out 500 water filters, built 15 toilets with another 30 on the way, we started building a water filter system, we will build new huts in Khalday, install new water pumps, purchase 25 bikes for the kids to go to school, repaired 20 water pumps (costs: $ 70,- ( paid by the donation of family Nolles)). We have food brought weekly to 11 families and give our boys $ 17.25 for petrol per week to deliver this and to provide the schools with light during English classes at night.

Diesel is getting pricy in Cambodia; already $ 1.00 per liter, petrol already costs $ 1.25 per liter!

500 water filters were donated for the commune Champij in Takeo thanks to Jaap and friends!

Hundreds of villagers came to hear about the use of water filters by IDE.

Jaap, Peter, Marc, Jan and William are taking a rest. Jaap and friends have organized things before: the glasses days in Chhuk a few years ago, helping to renovate in Baca Villa, helping out in the countryside and now this! Before Jaap and friends arrived have been been we with the girl (Hok Shrey Li from the Champij commune in Takeo) with the immense growth in her face, throat and eye yet to a hospital in Phnom Phen on invitation of Operation Smile from the US.

The girl HOK Shrey Li from Takeo

Still a huge problem ! Possibly they could help, after being in touch before with Rita. We left early for Phnom Penh, together with her mother. The doctors and dentist were very interested, since this was a “special case”. A scan was made, but unfortunately 3 days later we got the news that they couldn’t help the girl. They would send the information to doctors in Australia, but at this point we don’t know what will happen. Her face and lips are swollen and look red and purple. She’s in a lot of pain. Who can help her !!

Jaap and friends Peter, Marc, William and Jan; the water filter campaign was a huge success!

Over 500 water filters were donated! Everything was well organized and a lot of fun.

The bamboo tables were ready in time. IDE delivered the water filters in time and gave a nice presentation for the locals in Takeo. Many villagers came to see it, check the pics.

The five guys (Jaap and friends) were present, which made it even nicer to hand them out. The local boys Reth, Leakhana and Phea and volunteers Pauline and Richard transported them on a tractor, a hand tractor and a small truck and handed them out in the villages. All schools in the villages of the commune got water filters. The rest (458 pcs) were handed out to the villagers.

No goods inside the house, but at least now they have a water filter.

Handing out water filters

The kids give us a hand.

With all possible means of transportation on the way.

With the tractor on the dusty roads.

We got a list from the headmen with which people should get a water filter.

We had to adjust the list, since it was too much based on people who are their friends. Nice days, but also tiring to get everything organized.

Many people here don’t understand how water runs through a closed ceramic pot. We got may questions about it. It’s important to educate people about it and to check every now and then how it is being used and cleaned.

Thank you so much Jaap and friends and all contributors!

Thanks to IDE for their presentation.

Toilet project Takeo: The sanitation project in Takeo is almost finished. The last few toilets are being built, which means the first part of the sanitation project will be finished. The first two villages have a reasonable amount of toilets. Still we have a long list of people who would like a toilet. With a small amount left we can still continue with this project. If we want to provide all the villages with toilets we need more funds.

Remember the Millennium Development Goals!

Extra medication for our health care from Jaap and Jan Spithoven:

Thank you so much Jaap and Jan and also pharmacist Meindersma in Deventer and pharmacy Midden Betuwe.

We got extra medication and more is always welcome. We will keep looking for a solution on the long term. 05-02-2011 Nicole Vermeulen

Had to leave again unfortunately. She was here for the 2nd time to help out and is very popular with the locals of Khna Po; in the health care, as well as with the boys and Lhaom and Lhea. Thank you Nicole for the extra donation to the health care.

Also a thank you to Nicole’s parents who installed the new lighting in our health care.

Support families

Bart and Ilse: thank you very much for supporting grandma Yoeumn with 4 young children in Bhos.

Twice a week we bring them rice and dried fish.

Rako Belgium will again sponsor the salary and education of 2 teachers. We also got sponsoring for an orphan in the commune. Thank you so much Rako Belgium, also on behalf of Michel. To be continued.

Katja van de Merwe will sponsor the elderly woman who takes care of her 3 young grandchildren in Sombath. We will provide them with food twice a week. Thank you so much Katja!

Thanks to all our volunteers who helped us out again:

Jason, Lindsay, Sally, Tomas, Fons, Richard & Pauline.

During Tomas’ volunteering period, his father and friend Jacques came to visit and they are going to sponsor a family. Thank you so much! To be continued.

Tomas and Jason, thank you for your attention for the Bhos kids, whom you visited daily and played with. Lindsay, thank you for your efforts in the health care and the education you gave them. Lindsay will do more for us when she’s back in England; much appreciated!

Tomas donated a new water pump and a new hut for the Reph family. Thank you so much, also to the people that donated to you.

Richard & Pauline many thanks for helping voluntering in Takeo again (they where her last year already).

Also a big thank you to family Nolles, who have been supporting us for a long time already and have visited us and our projects this year. Thank you Harry & Christa, esp. for the $ 500,- of which i had the 20 water pumps fixed and paid for the medication of February. The rest will be spent on medication for March.

Fam Schalks and sponsors, we installed a new water pump for the Bhos kids (AIDS) and our little friend Neang (who has AIDS) got a nice step bike, with which he’s so very happy. Thank you very much. Noon, the girl is still taking sewing classes.

Aunt Betsie (Nicole’s aunt) will sponsor € 55,- per month to support the mother with 6 kids in Somrong Village. Thank you so much!

Pics from these families and more info about them come in our next newsletters.

CDO house in Chhuk needs renovation urgently!

After a downpour in Chhuk it shows that we need to renovate the house asap. It’s raining just as much inside as outside. The volunteers can go to Siem Reap during the weekends, but not Lhaom and Lhea. Because we have no funds for this, Tomas’ father will do some fundraising to help us. We have also been on it with winery Hees (thanks again!).

Yesterday (March 17th) we got the news that winery Hees will transfer the money this month already! Such wonderful news. Tomas’ father will try to fill the gap with fundraising.

To be continued soon hopefully. According to the World Bank the minimum amount needed to live is $ 1.25 per person per day!

Included is an article from the paper of 24-02-2011, which states that 10% of the people of Siem Reap need to live of $ 0.45 per day (Euro 0.36 per person per day). Try to survive with that amount…..

The youngest of family Hall from the rice fields is undernourished. During a visit from Jaap and friends we brought clothes that were very welcome and also wanted by other families. The doctor present, Dr. Peter, noticed the baby needs more food. He will sponsor this monthly. Every two weeks we will bring a can with 1kg baby food.

The family is already being sponsored for food by family Schalks. Thank you so much!

Nice expressions by Cambodians:

When someone has a lot of money, they say: “he has buddha behind him”.

If everything goes according to plan, the government will introduce a new law concerning NGO’s.

In 2011 many new or adjusted laws will be introduced in Cambodia. We aren’t very happy if the new NGO law is introduced. If you want to read more about it check: http://www.trust.org/alertnet/news/cambodias-proposed-ngo-law-stirs-suspicion-and-concern

and http://www.trust.org/alertnet/news/qa-whats-the-good-practice-project Our Hospital in Khna Po:

Health Care CDO

In January we had 2169 patients and 2058 in February.

Things like infections, burns, broken bones etc. Also the number of childbirths is increasing (an average of 2 per day).

The mother of 3 little children in Somboth is not doing very well. She has a badly swollen throat and belly and we don’t know what causes it. At the moment she’s staying with a local countryman (they say a doctor), so we can’t do anything until she comes to our health care. To be continued.

We spent $ 554.07 on medication in January and $ 250.34 in February (paid by the donation of family Nolles). Fortunately Jaap and friends brought some too, but a permanent solution is still very welcome.

The district was actually going to provide medication, starting this month, but they have too little to provide enough.

We took a little boy to Angkor Children Hospital, who had severe burns (2nd and 3rd degree) to legs and feet due to boiling hot rice water.

A day later we had an emergency with a boy who had one hand severely mutilated by a saw machine. The Dutch doctors present watched how our local staff handled this. The boy is doing fairly well now.

On March 10th we gave a presentation of our health care to the Ministry of Health, of the province of Siem Reap. An English version is available for those who are interested. We got many compliments and everyone thanked us for our efforts.

Our nurse apprentice Sho Maly has a baby girl. She and her husband live in the health care because they have no house. She’s always there, 24/7. Nicole gave her some nice clothes for the baby and i added some dolls and things.

Lindsay daily visited our invalid girl, in her hut in Somboth, to massage her, help her to build muscle and increase strength and give her attention. Lindsay donated a water filter to this family. Thank you so much Lindsay!! Summary Report on 2011

Foundation news

The ca-du shop is going well!

A large group of volunteers come by on Saturdays to sort out clothes and pack them in boxes to be transported to Cambodia. The shop is also taken care of by those people. They talk about our organization and sell used books, toys and also Cambodian bracelets, shawls, hammocks etc.

Some volunteers are repairing sewing machines, so they will be ready to be taken to the villages in Cambodia.

We are in contact with sg Weredi in Valkenswaard and Graafschapcollege Doetinchem, so students can do a working experience with our foundation.

Students more often choose to do their final project in our communes. Are you a final year student? This could be a great opportunity!

We still need more volunteers who want to help us to support the villages in any way.

One of our loyal volunteers Yvonne Grijzen is in hospital at the moment. We want to wish her a quick recovery!

Opening hours Cadu-home and winkeltje:

Every Saturday from 11.00 a.m. to 16.00 p.m. for info about our organization and the shop is open too.

Every last Saturday of the month, at noon, info with presentation. For internships, volunteers, students and people who are interested in working in the communes.

You’re also very welcome in our shop, where we sell handmade krama’s (shawls), jewelry, hammocks and bath mats from Cambodia. We also sell used books, toys and other things. The profits will go to the people of our communes in Cambodia.
