D.P. SinghChairman, Board of Governors of NIFT

It is 24 years since NIFT took a small step into the, then exotic and unfamiliar, field of fashion education in India and today occupies a unique and challenging position in its chosen fields, both domestically as well as internationally.

From certificate programmess NIFT steadily progressed to Diplomas and finally, after the passage of the NIFT Act in 2006, NIFT today proudly offers a wide variety of Design, Technology, and Management programmes at the Undergraduate as well as the Post Graduate levels.

National Institute of Fashion Technology was set up in 1986 under the aegis of the Ministry

of Textiles, Government of India. It has emerged as the premier Institute of Design, Management

and Technology, developing professionals for taking up leadership positions in fashion

business in the emerging global scenario.

The Institute is a pioneer in envisioning and evolving fashion business education in the

country through a network of thirteen professionally managed centres at

Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chennai, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Kangra, Kannur, Kolkata, Mumbai,

New Delhi, Patna, Raebareli and Shillong.

NIFT has set academic standards and excelled in thought leadership by providing a pool of

creative genius and technically competent professionals. The Institute provides a common

platform for fashion education, research and training.

NIFT Act 2006 published in the Gazette of India on 14th July, 2006 confers Statutory Status on NIFT.

The Act came into effect from 1st April, 2007. The President of India is the ‘Visitor’ of

the Institute under the Act. The Act empowers the Institute to award degrees and other

academic distinctions. NIFT will be the first premier Institute in the world to award its own

Degrees in the field of fashion education.

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

EVALUATION

Teaching at the Institute involves a cohesive, contextual and nurturing environment for learning. The emphasis is on professional development providing a competitive edge by using standardised pedagogy and teaching methodology. It also involves sharing of work as well as learning processes with peers and faculty, whose feedback and guidance is crucial to the student’s understanding, development, and maturity. Students undertake classroom and workshop assignments, conduct field studies, make presentations and participate in group discussions and seminars and are encouraged to develop industry linkages. The students get an opportunity to work in an intellectually stimulating environment on projects focusing on integrative abilities that use skills ranging from technical expertise to creative exposure and conceptualisation. The interactive mode of teaching is supplemented by latest visual aids and IT tools.

The evaluation system aims at evaluating student’s knowledge, skills and encourages self improvement. It also closely monitors student’s evolution as a competent professional. The evaluation scheme focuses at an entire gamut of learning and corresponding evaluation tools like task-based assignments, interactive industry projects, internships, research surveys and written examinations throughout the year. Various juries like end semester, graduation project, design collection and viva-voce etc., comprising of academicians and industry professionals, judge student’s work and provide qualitative evaluation and feedback in terms of overall growth and performance. The evaluation tools also assess the student’s ability to correlate and apply learning from various inputs as a demonstrated outcome through the work of a student as well as levels of proficiency in individual/specific modules during the semester.

FACULTYThe NIFT faculty trained at some of the leading design and fashion institutes of international repute, bring to the classroom professional capabilities, wide exposure and years of hands-on industry experience. Committed to grow in their profession, the faculty constantly upgrade their knowledge and skills through sustained interaction with the industry and research work in relevant areas. Students enhance their talents by working with faculty and foreign experts on various real life projects, thereby gaining invaluable knowledge, experience and awareness about the latest global trends.

introduction

The Fashion Design programme has been instrumental in bringing about a paradigm shift in design perception in India today. It works closely with fashion professionals to help evolve a unique fashion identity universally relevant and acceptable, for a global audience. With this three-pronged approach, the programme is strengthened with increased relevance to the fashion industry in India and with a mission to create a global identity in design.

Holistic inputs on generic design with more focused approach towards apparel inculcate the ability to develop and channelise creativity. The curriculum hones design sensitisation, which balances global fashion aesthetics with an Indian soul. It addresses needs of the export market as well as both couture and pret a porter clothing in India, expanding and categorising apparel design into niche segments. In tandem with the shifts in the industry where Design has become even more significant, the students are trained to anticipate and address relevant concerns and issues. A logical, sequential, hands-on experience enables students to conceptualise designs, make patterns, drape and construct garments of impeccable quality.
