Before the service begins:God's love and power extend over all creation. Every life ,including ourown, is precious to God. Christians have always believed that there is hopein death as in life, and that there is new life in Christ after death.Even those who share such faith find that there is a real sense of loss at thedeath of a loved one. We will each have had our own experiences of theirlife and death, with different memories and different feelings of love, griefand respect. To acknowledge this at the beginning of the service should helpus to use this occasion to express our faith and our feelings as we sayfarewell, to acknowledge our loss and our sorrow, and to reflect on our ownmortality. Those who mourn need support and consolation. Our presence here today ispart of that continuing support.

Nigel chose the readings and hymns for this service and asked people toparticipate.

The service is led by the Revd. Steven Young and the Revd. Pat Wright

    The Gathering

Nigel's coffin is received into church with sentences ofScripture'I am the resurrection and the life,' says the Lord. 'Those whobelieve in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone wholives and believes in me will never die.'John 11.25,26I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us fromthe love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8.38,39Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus,God will bring with him those who have died. So we will be with the Lordfor ever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.1 Thessalonians 4.14,17b,18We brought nothing into the world, and we take nothing out.The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of theLord.1 Timothy 6.7; Job 1.2lbThe steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to anend; they are new every morning; great is his faithfulness.Lamentations 3.22,23Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.Matthew 5.4God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone whobelieves in him may not perish but may have eternal life.John 3.16

Hymn: Lead us, heavenly Father, lead usO'er the world's tempestuous sea;Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,For we have no help but thee:Yet possessing every blessing

I f our God our Father be.Saviour breathe forgiveness o'er us,All our weakness thou dost know,Thou didst tread this earth before us,Thou didst feel its keenest woe;Lone and dreary, faint and weary,Through the desert thou didst go.Spirit of our God, descending,Fill our hearts with heavenly joy,Love with every passion blending,Pleasure that can never cloy; Thus provided, pardoned, guided,Nothing can our peace destroy.

First Reading: Revelation 21: 1-7Read by Anne Common

I, John, saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven andthe first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I sawthe holy city, the new Jerusalem, corning down out of heaven fromGod, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard aloud voice from the throne saying, 'See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will bewith them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes.Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, forthe first things have passed away.' And the one who was seated on thethrone said, 'See, I am making all things new.' Also he said, 'Write this, forthese words are trustworthy and true.' Then he said to me, 'It is done! I amthe Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I willgive water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. Those who conquerwill inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be mychildren.'

Second Reading: John 6: 35-40Read by Bob Common

Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to mewill never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never bethirsty. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do notbelieve. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, andanyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have comedown from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him whosent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should losenothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son andbelieve in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up onthe last day.'

Sermon: The Rt. Revd. Michael Colclough

Prayers: Led by the Revd. Ken Woolhouse

    The Lord's Prayer:Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:All: Our Father, who art in heaven,hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

    Hymn:

    Tribute:

All things bright and beautiful. All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wondeiful,The Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens,

Each little bird that sings,He made their glowing colours,He made their tiny wings. The purple headed mountain,

The river running by,The sunset and the morning,That brightens up the sky.The cold wind in the winter,

The pleasant summer sun,The ripe fruits in the garden,He made them every one.He gave us eyes to see them,

And lips that we might tell,How great is God Almighty,Who has made all things well.

    Steve Purcell

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy, slow to anger and of great goodness. As a father is tender towards his children,so is the Lord tender to those that fear him.For he knows of what we are made;he remembers that we are but dust. Our days are like the grass;we flourish like a flower of the field;when the wind goes over it, it is goneand its place will know it no more. But the merciful goodness of the Lord enduresfor ever and ever toward those that fear himand his righteousness upon their children's children.God our creator and redeemer,by your power Christ conquered deathand entered into glory.Confident of his victoryand claiming his promises,we entrust Nigel to your mercyin the name of Jesus our Lord, who died and is aliveand reigns with you,now and for ever. All Amen.

BlessingMay God give youhis comfort and his peace, his light and his joy,in this world and the next;and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,be among you and remain with you always. All: Amen.
