Ryan Douglas 1. Sani Abacha was a Nigerian Army general and politician who served as the President of Nigeria from 1993 to 1998. The Abacha administration became the first to record unprecedented economic achievements: [7] he oversaw an increase in the country's foreign exchange reserves from $494 million in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997, and reduced the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion by 1997. 2. Abdulsalami Abubakar a Hausa Nigerian general who was President of Nigeria from 9 June 1998 until 29 May 1999. He succeeded Sani Abacha after Abacha's death. Under Abubakar's leadership, Nigeria adopted its new constitution on 5 May 1999, which provided for multiparty elections. He successfully transferred control of the country from a military leadership to a presidency. 3. Ibrahim Babangida Babangida ruled Nigeria from 27 August 1985, when he overthrew Major General Muhammadu Buhari in a coup, until 27 August 1993. General Babangida was a key player in most of the military coups in Nigeria. He introduced a “structural adjustment program” that deregulated certain industries and helped bolster the economy. He also has been accused of numerous human rights violations, such the killing of a reporter who wrote negative articles about Babangida.
