No change yet to Ferryhill Library hoursResponding to public confusion about the opening hours of the Ferryhill Library, staff are keen to inform users that the library opening hours are not due to change until the New Year.“Some library users may be under the impression, as a result of the recent consul-tation, that library hours have already changed, but that is not due to happen until January next year,” said a spokesperson.

MP for Sedgefield, Phil Wilson, is inviting members of the public to ask him questions as part of a video Q&A session for his new website. The Labour MP for Sedgefield has launched a brand new party political
site, called www.philwil-son-labour.co.uk.One feature of his new site is a video content section, including some of Phil’s interviews, public ap-pointments and House of Commons appearances. And to celebrate its
launch, Phil has agreed to answer questions from con-stituents in a special video feature.“I want to make the website as interactive as possible,” says Phil, who succeeded Tony Blair as the MP for Sedgefield in 2007.“We want to attract as many people to the site so my constituents can see what I’m up to, the work I’m doing and the campaigns we’re running.“A video Q&A will hopefully be a great way of engaging our constituents, but it’s also a fantastic opportu-nity for them to ask their MP a question – and there’s no restriction on subject matter, within reason!“I look forward to receiving some thoughtful questions covering a variety of issues, and I’ll try to get through as many questions as we can.”Phil’s new website includes a number of features, including news from around the Sedgefield con-stituency.To ask Phil a question, email it to [email protected], including your full name and address.

Tara and Katey celebrate in style
Upholding the Greenfield tradition of excellent school attendance over five years, Tara Chegwidden and Katey Waters, who is from Chilton, joined friends, family and teachers in a celebration of this significant achieve-ment. Newcastle football stadium provided the impressive backdrop for the occasion.“It’s a real joy” said Melanie Stubbs, Assistant Headteacher at Greenfield,
“to see the commitment of our students, their parents and carers recognised. “Punctuality and outstand-ing attendance are valued by colleges, universities and employers. It is good to know that we are preparing our students by equipping them with more than just brilliant academic qualifi-cations.”Caroline O’Neal, Head of Education for Durham, praised Tara and Katey’s commitment and their
proud parents reflected on the girls’ determination to never miss a valuable day of learning.“All our students are expected to achieve a minimum of 95% attendance and we are delighted that the attendance figures of our students beat all government targets.“However, we are not complacent, Tara and Katey have shown us once again that 100% is possible!”

Poetry CornerThe house where I was born
By Jimmy Taylor, ex Mainsforth Colliery Miner
I remember, I remember
The house where I was born.
It didn’t have a bathroom or garden or lawn.
But stood joined to three others,
One each side, one at the back,
A shared toilet a midden
Made the street a cul-de-sac
I remember, I remember,
That house of long ago
One room upstairs where we all slept,
And one room down below.
A set pot in the corner,
a narrow sink behind the door.
The fire place, so big and black,
And stone slabs for a floor.
I remember, I remember,
The house where I was born,
It didn’t have a bathroom
Or a garden with a lawn.
But many happy hours I spent
When I was free.
Within those walls we made our home,
My family and me.

Hospital Waiting Room
By Geoff Gregg, Tursdale (ex-Ferryhill)
Hospital waiting roomBack and forth they goHere, there, to and fro
Doors opening and closingPeople sat on chairs
Reading, dozing, watching, waitingCounting patterns on a wall,
Hoping to hear a voiceA name, a call
Noisy footsteps on a polished floor prevailingA motionless clock, silenty ailing
Still relentlessly back and forth they goMemos in hand
Doctor’s scrawled notes about a troublesome glandAt last a call, can it be for me?
Am I the patient they want to see?Alas not, I change my seat
And look with disdainThose dreadful patterns
I’ll count them again
Elderly man’s courage praised in wake of violent attack A 78-year-old church helper in Chilton was praised for his courage in the face of a violent heroin addict who threatened him with scissors while attempting to rob him.The victim later told police he was “both scared and angry but I wasn’t going to give in.”The incident occurred when Stuart Eric Marley, 28, of Bouch Street, Shildon, approached his victim in the grounds of St Aidan’s Church in Chilton as he was on his way to help put up some cupboards.Marley asked for money and when his victim said he had none, he grabbed his hand and demanded he hand over his car keys. When he was told,
“there’s no way you’re getting these keys,” Morley then produced a pair of scissors with five inch blades and held them to his victim’s throat.“You can stab me all over,” said his victim, who stead-fastly refused to hand over the keys. The assailant then ran away but was chased by his victim who was able to identify the bus he boarded and give police a description of his attacker.Morley admitted robbery and possession of an offensive weapon at Durham County Court. The court also heard that Marley had a string of previous convictions related to the possession of weapons in public. He was also before the
court having admitted eight charges of being concerned in the supply of heroin in the Spennymoor area.Marley was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison. Passing sentence, Judge Christopher Prince said: “One can only feel humbled at the courage of some members of the public. “In this case, the great fortitude shown by this retired gentleman almost beggars belief.“Perhaps not surprisingly,” he told Marley, “having met your match, you turned then ran away.”The judge asked that a commendation be sent to the elderly man to praise him for his actions.

morning of Friday 28th September. The owner of the Lexus said: “While unattended, significant damage was caused to the front wing by what appears to be an orange coloured vehicle, judging by the paintwork left on my car (pictured). The front wing is beyond repair. No note was left. “I am willing to offer a £50 reward to any person who can identify the offending vehicle to the police by calling 101 and quoting Crime Reference – DHM 28-09-2012-0078.”

Ferryhill Town Council is backing a campaign which is bidding for a share of the recently announced £20m fund aimed at improving access to the railway network. Last month, Sedgefield MP, Phil Wilson, fearing that it might never materialise, raised the matter of the fund in the Commons to ask for further details. Leader of the House, Andrew Lansley MP, replied that he would, “Ask my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Transport [Patrick McLoughlin MP] to respond.”Ferryhill Town Council leader, Councillor Pat McCourt said: “Ferryhill Town Council welcome the recent announcement by [previous transport minister, Justine Greening
MP], inviting local commu-nities to bid for funding to establish or re-establish a local railway station.“Residents have long held the view that the reopening of the railway station at Ferryhill Station would be a major boost, not only for Ferryhill, but for surrounding towns and villages.“I would like to assure residents that the town council is already working on this project with our local MP, Phil Wilson, and we will do all we can to ensure a successful appli-cation is submitted to try to achieve this long-term ambition.”A previous campaign 15 years ago was unsuccess-ful although the feasibil-ity study conducted at the time suggested that re-opening the station
would be economically viable. A member of that earlier action group, Janet McDonagh, believes it would still be worthwhile resurrecting the project: “There have been new houses built and there are sites earmarked for new builds which would support a station,” she said, adding that, “a station could in turn encourage more people into the town.”Mr Wilson said: “Hopefully the competition will provide Ferryhill the op-portunity to open the station. “We are still waiting for more details from Network Rail. We may not be successful but we need to do what we can. I am delighted that Ferryhill Town Council are helping with the campaign.”
A cannabis grow was recovered from an address in Coleridge Road, Chilton on Wednesday 26th
September. Twelve plants were seized and a male at the address was arrested.

Due in court
Aaron Edward Jefferies, of Copeland Road, West Auckland, was due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently to face two charges arising out of an incident, in Ferryhill, on 6th September. The 30 year-old is alleged to have been drunk and disorderly in the Post Boy public house and to have had in his possession an offensive weapon, namely a screwdriver. Brett Maughan, of Raven-
sworth Road, Ferryhill, was also due to face charges that on 26th August he drove a Vauxhall Corsa, on Ravensworth Road, whilst over the legally permitted limit of alcohol. The 21 year-old also faces charges of taking the vehicle without consent of the owner, driving without a licence and without insurance and of failing to stop when ordered to do so by an officer in uniform.
Pregnant woman assaulted and threatenedA man who assaulted his heavily pregnant girlfriend and threatened to stab her children and her ex-partner received a suspended jail sentence earlier this week.John Allan Parkinson, who has since moved to Durham, made the threats in the couple’s Chilton home on August 17th. Parkinson suspected that his girlfriend had begun seeing her ex-partner and assaulted her as she tried to leave her home. Only when she claimed she had a medical ap-pointment did he allow her to leave, but on doing so, he threatened to stab her two children and their father with a samurai sword if she didn’t return. His girlfriend was 31 weeks pregnant at the time.Parkinson, 27, then
followed his victim out of the house, leaving his three-year-old child inside and unattended for 15 minutes.David Maddison, pros-ecuting at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ then described a similar assault which took place on June 27th. On that occasion the victim was also assaulted when trying to leave the house. Maddison described that Parkinson, “locked the door and dragged her upstairs by the hair. He then pushed her on to the bed and put his hands around her throat to choke her. She was banging on the window and thought she was going to die.“During this incident,” continued Mr Maddison, “her phone was taken from her and broken by Mr
Parkinson so she couldn’t call the police.”Parkinson pleaded guilty to two charges of assault by beating, criminal damage and child neglect.Peter Bradford, in mitigation, said that Parkinson had pleaded guilty from the outset, even when his victim had offered to retract the al-legations. He claimed he had only left the child alone for five minutes and that news that the victim had been seeing her ex-partner, “had been preying on his mind.”Parkinson was sentenced to 18 weeks in custody, suspended for 24 months with a probation order. He was also ordered to complete a domestic violence programme and to pay £50 in compensa-tion.

Dear Editor,
We would like to apologise to those readers who came to the HUB on Monday 24 September expecting the bar to be open as we had stated. Unfortunately due to unforeseen technical problems we had to delay the opening of the bar until 6.00 p.m. on Thursday the 27 September. With those problems solved the bar is now fully functional and open for business. The next phase of the on-going drive to have the Hub fully op-erational is that of ensuring that we have sufficient volunteers fully trained and available to help out when required to do so. To this end a meeting for anyone wishing to volunteer their services will be held in the HUB on Thursday 11 October commencing at 7.30 p.m. The HUB is, for at least the next 35 years, now our responsibility so please do come along to this meeting and offer what assistance you can. Many thanks and best wishes. Dave Farry, Brian Gibson and Paul Mountford.

Dear Editor,
On behalf of Chilton and Windlestone Chapel, we would like to thank everyone who supported our Macmillan coffee morning on Wednesday 26th September.
A lovely morning was had by all and we raised £420.31.
A big thank you!
Dear Editor,
I read recently in the Northern Echo that Mr John Irvine is to leave Mainsforth Cricket Club after 40 years dedicated service as both a player and official.
In the article, John expressed concern for the future of the Cricket Club and for that of other local sports teams, due largely to the fact that there is lack of volunteers willing to work behind the scenes and run such clubs.
Ferryhill has a long, proud history in local sport but many of us remember with dismay how once great sides such as Ferryhill Athletic F.C. and Dean and Chapter Cricket Club, to name but two, have sadly disappeared.
Sport plays a vital role in the community and I fervently hope that the local community will rally round and support Mainsforth Cricket Club and other clubs, in order that they prosper in the future. We need more good people, like John Irvine, willing to give selflessly of their time and energy if sports clubs are to survive.

Residents in County Durham are being urged to get composting this autumn.Rachel Gatland, waste strategy and policy officer at Durham County Council, said: “At this time of year people are thinking about tidying up the garden and it’s an ideal time to start composting.“There’s plenty of garden waste available – such as spent bedding plants, grass cuttings, autumn leaves and prunings – which can all be recycled over the coming months to produce nutritious compost ready for use in the garden next spring. “You can also use other materials to make a good compost such as coffee grounds, tissues and paper napkins, cardboard and vacuum cleaner dust.“Adding waste to your compost during the cooler weather helps to keep the process going at a time when the decomposition

will naturally slow down.”Durham County Council in partnership with www.get-composting.com is giving people the chance to get a 220 litre compost bin at the reduced price of £16 as well as a further offer to get a second bin for £8, plus £5.49 for delivery. Residents can also buy a 330 litre compost bin for £19, with the offer of a second for £9.50. To order a bin people should contact 0844 571 444 or visit www.getcomposting.comAnd for people wondering what to do with all their fallen leaves this autumn, a more environmentally friendly approach is to make a leaf mould. For further information on composting and leaf moulds, contact Durham County Council’s strategic waste management team on 03000 261 000, visit www.durham.gov.uk and type ‘composting’ into the search site, or email [email protected]

Homes and communities organisation, livin, has made it through to the final round of a national competition that highlights the important community work carried out by social landlords above and beyond providing homes. The Community Impact Awards, organised by the National Housing Federation, recognise a vast range of neighbour-hood projects run by housing associations from anti-social behaviour initia-tives to support for older people.Employment initiative, livin futures, was short-listed by a panel of tenant judges for its commitment to not only offering real jobs locally but its aim to build sustainable communi-ties by tackling workless-ness through innovative partnership working.Established in 2010 the project has already employed over 35 people putting them into long-term employment with a 100 per cent retention rate and running training courses and workshops offering real qualifications and experience. In addition to this, livin appointed a dedicated employabil-ity officer to work on the project full-time providing one-to-one mentoring to participants by working
closely with a number of other organisation to provide further opportuni-ties.The best in category and overall regional winner will be announced at the regional awards ceremony which will be held at the Copthorne Hotel in Newcastle on 24 October.Colin Steel, chief executive of livin, said: “We believe one of our unique offers is that we can provide our tenants and people livin in our communities an op-portunity to secure real jobs that will make a real difference to their lives.“By working in partnership with a number of other organisations we have been able to substantially increase the number of vacancies available to tenants and offer a valuable worked based training and work experience.“We are delighted to be recognised for this work and it makes it even more special that we have been shortlisted by a panel of residents living in social housing – they know first-hand the difference housing associations can make.” The national winner of the Community Impact Awards, which are sponsored by Morrison and 24housing magazine, will be announced early next year.
