•A volcano is a vent: a fissure in the earth's crust (or in the surface of some other planet) through which molten lava and gases erupt •Volcanoes change the Lithosphere by creating Faults, and mountains in the Earth’s Surface•The prime cause of a volcano eruption is the movement of the tectonic plates. This causes pressure at the base of the volcano pushing the magma upwards.

•Before lava hits the air it is known as magma. Magma is under pressure when it is below the Lithosphere•The Sill is the stem of Magma that is in between the Earth’s surface and the base of the volcano•The vent is in the middle of the volcano and is the passage for magma to travel when there is too much built up pressure•The Dike is a visible vein in the volcano it is the path of magma.•The Crater is the very top of the volcano where the opening is.•The magma becomes lava as soon as it reaches the crater.•From the explosion comes a mixture of gasses, ashes, and cinders this is often what people see first when the volcano is in the eruption process.

Page 7: Niki Ward Ppt

•Once the eruption is over the Lava cools, hardens and cracks creating a new surface•The ground is very fertile and new vegetation life grows. •There is a residue of hard molten rocks which people use to help build roads and even buildings
