A TRUE STORY OF
A SISTERHOOD
Anyone who has ever competed in a quartet or chorus understands the preparation that goes into the big day of competition. Not only do we hope that our quartet or chorus will perform our very best, but we are aware that the competition is strong and many factors can influence the judge’s final decision.
Even with that said, there is still the strong bond we all hold as fellow Sweet Adelines, and that sisterhood between members can be stronger than the desire to reach your competition goal.
Our quartet had been together only ten shorts weeks and as you can imagine, had much to do. We thought we had found the perfect costume, but unfortunately, the Tuesday before competition at our dress rehearsal, found that our costume looked more like pajamas. So, we searched online in the wee hours of the morning and found a sequined top. We placed the order with overnight shipping directly to the Hilton hotel in Daytona Beach. We tracked the shipment online and even had the office at the hotel call us when it arrived. What a relief – we made it!!
Upon our arrival late Thursday afternoon, we found the shipping office closed so we talked to Security and they helped us find our package. We rushed to our room, opened the package, and to our horror, found only three tops. What were we going to do? We made several phone calls trying to right the wrong with no luck.
Thursday night was the Top Hat Club show and the quartets were asked to wear something glitzy. We had dressed in our own outfits. Three of us were dressed in similar colors, but again we were out of luck. Then we tried calling our members to see if they could help. Again - no luck. The show must go on, so off we went to the Top Hat Club.
We decided to look for one person that might have a top similar to the other three. When we got to the show, we scanned the audience looking for that one top that would save us – no luck. We were ready to give up. But wait! We spotted our angels standing against the wall. There they were wear-ing jackets that were exquisite and looked to be very close to our sizes. What were the odds? We couldn’t believe our eyes. Following the show, we approached the quartet and told them our sad story. We took the big step and asked if we could possibly borrow them for competition. They were our competitors, but yet we were asking them to help us out without even knowing the outcome. Were we crazy? We were competing in the same competition. Do you believe it? In a true act of kindness and sisterhood, they graciously offered to let us wear their beautiful jackets on the competi-tion stage. With a few minor adjustments, we were on stage.
We felt so confident going on stage for our first competition. We were wearing not only beautiful jackets, but were wrapped in a feeling of sisterhood. When we got off stage, guess who was there to greet us - our wonderful angels. Wow! What a thrill!
This is what Sweet Adelines is all about – sharing the love of harmony both musically but in life. The members of Impetuous quartet want to thank the members of Ladybug quartet – Iris, Shamane, Lisa and Trudy. You genuinely embody what this organization is all about. What a wonderful sing-out we had last month, performing the first half of our annual show “JOURNEY TO ODZ” for over 400 Shriners! They were a very enthusiastic and appreciative audience as we once again journeyed down the yellow brick road! It made this performance doubly fun as a lot of the audience dressed up as Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Munchkins, good or bad witches and even monkey
Another very eventful sing-out we had last month was outside on Anna Maria Island at their big celebration of “The Pier” built 100 years ago. Many passers-by stopped to hear us perform a lot of upbeat songs like “Chordbusters”-Rhythm of Life” - “I’ll Never Say Never” - San Francisco Bay Blues” and “Armed Forces Medley” (to name a few). Some were so impressed with our performance, they picked up our membership/ performance brochure that was on display. Hopefully this will get us some new members and some more performances.

HILTON HEAD SHORE NOTES Marcia Cornell, Team Leader The Hilton Head Shore Notes presented our annual fund-raising show, “Reel-to-Reel Love,” on February 11, at which we paid homage to the movies. Under the direction of Beth Green, we sang Mamma Mia, Crazy, Ease on Down the Road, We Go Together and I Got Rhythm, showcasing our versatility. Also appearing at the show were The Hum-dingers, four very funny and talented men who entertain audiences in Orlando’s largest theme park. In addition, Soundsation! and Wink ‘n’ a Smilecreated their own beautiful harmonies. The icing on the cake was selling out the show and filling all 630 seats! Making a substantial profit enabled us to make a sizable donation to The Children’s Center’s musi-cal enrichment program, a win-win for us all.
Then it was time to knuckle down and prepare for competition. We or-ganized a weekend retreat on St. Simons Island and were very fortunate to have coach Gina Kaiser put us through our paces. By creating fabu-lous new choreo for us, she brought our songs to life and coaxed every last emotion out of us! The cherry on the icing on the cake was having Betty Meinholz coach us two weeks in a row! By emphasizing hydraulics, she helped us get the most from our sound.
We are so grateful to both these talented, fun, ener-getic ladies. We are so pleased to be a part of the Region 9 family!

VENETIAN HARMONY CHORUS AND NEW DIRECTOR PLAN EXCITING FUTURE
Venetian Harmony Chorus initiated Jim Shubert, its new director with a performance of Star Spangled Banner before an enthusiastic crowd at a baseball game of the Stone Crabs, a minor league team in Port Charlotte.
Shubert has 43 years experience with Barbershop Harmony Society, holding assignments including various chapter offices, choreogra-pher, assistant director, and section leader. His directing career has included The DuPage Valley Chapter SPEBSQSA for 13 years and Chicago Metro Chapter in 1993. He is also is assistant director of Naples/Fort Myers Chapter BHS. He sings bass with Cross Town Connection, 2008 Illinois District Senior Quartet champions and Sunshine District Senior Quartet Champions in 2010. He also is an arranger and composer, recently having had a hymn selected for publication by Augsburg Fortress Publishing Co. In addition, he has directed several church choirs in Chicago, Western Springs and Lemont, Illinois.
Venetian Harmony, with oversight by their Management Team, headed by new coordinator, MaryAnne Freedman, and Music Team, headed by Marie Getchell and Lois McIntyre, are reviewing chorus activities and taking steps to increase their exposure in the greater Venice area.
The semi-annual Fashion Show is being planned for November 5 with support of VHC alumnae who volunteered to head the planning committee.

Song of the Coast has rounded out an active Spring calendar with two major concerts before its first ever summer break.
As a chorus that enjoys serving its community, SOC participated in the 21st Annual Memorial Day (am I the only one who slips some-times and calls it Decoration Day?) Remembrance Service at Rockefeller Gardens on May 30. Joining Ormond Beach Mayor Ed Kelley, Florida Surgeon General and retired Air Force Colonel Frank Farmer, local veterans’ organizations and the Daytona Beach Concert Band, the chorus sang patriotic songs to an audience com-posed of service members, veterans and their families. Ceremonies include a flyover by the Spruce Creek Gaggle Flight Team, always an impressive experience as the silver birds pierced a perfect springtime sky over our own Halifax River. In the afternoon, 20 members of the chorus went to the Veterans Home where another Memorial Day service was being held. It was a very warm feeling with all the veteran residents attending. A beautiful poem of remembrance, “Today a Veteran Died” was read to the mass of attendees and brought memories to many and tears to some.
Tomoka UMC was the venue for this year’s Spring fundraising con-cert. An enthusiastic audience attended the event which featured performances by the chorus’s ensemble Key of Sea, the newly-formed SLQ (Section Leaders Quartet) of which much is expected, and the ever-popular Pitch Pipers. A solo by our fearless leader and director, Faye McClanahan, previewed her performance in the Ms. Senior Jacksonville Competition and stole the show.
Our talented MC and tenor section leader Sue Reardon wove Song of the Coast repertoire into a fast-moving cruise-based motif with a couple of delightful laugh lines, such as her solution to the problem of finding husbands of a certain age who tend to look alike on a cruise ship: bar-code them and hand the wives scanners. Chorus members wore the black and silver out-fits that won compliments at regional competition in Daytona Beach. The saucy red gloves came out for the finale which consisted of the competition package: “If I Give my Heart to You” and “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love.”
The chorus’s first ever Summer Break begins after the June 13th rehearsal. During the next six-weeks, members will become familiar with several additions to the repertoire. Monday night rehearsals resume August 1st.

PLATINUM COAST Deb Peterson
Members of the Platinum Coast Chorus have had a lot going on this year. We have installed a new Management Team, entertained at numerous Outreach Events.
Newly installed Officers include Denise Breitweiser, Team Leader, Kendra Townsend, Secretary; Nancy Henderson, Finance ; Deb Peterson, Marketing; Kathy Ellis, Membership; Barbara Tamaccio, Performance. Joan Mc Donald, former Secretary of PCC, presided over this auspicious occasion as the Installation Officer.
One of our most memorable Outreach Performances occurred when members of the chorus sang the Star Spangled Banner at the Washington Nationals Space Coast Cancer Center Night at the Space Coast Stadium. The performance began on an emotional high, as one of our participating basses, Dawn Faust, is a cancer survivor and “Poster Woman” for the Space Coast Cancer Center. It was brought higher with a finale of fireworks lighting up the sky as we sang, “And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air. Gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there.”
Sadly, Platinum Coast Chorus lost a very dear friend and colleague. “Margie Banks,” reports Norma Mc Mullen, “was a dear, devoted and caring person. In the early 90's I was given her name as a contact for a Sweet Adeline’s chorus in our area. Though I was not planning to become a member, I wanted to know I could visit once in a while. When Margie realized we had a common background as Public Relations/Publicity Chairpersons, she would not take "No" for an answer. I'm so glad for her persistence as I became a mem-ber of this wonderful chorus, where I achieved my 50 years as a Sweet Adeline and was given a royal celebration. Margie always could be counted on to support her chorus, musically and with great commitment in many areas. She had sung with bands, throughout her career. She had a long background in the business world. She always had a story to tell or a little joke. She was greatly admired in our area, and when she approached a business for an ad on behalf of our chorus, no one could turn her down! She will be greatly missed and just about anyone who had any contact with her.” Margie joined SAI in 1981 and proudly stood on the risers and performed in the PCC Annual Show. Yes, Margie, you will be missed!
One final note, the Platinum Coast Chorus continues to seek a new Director, effective immediately, in Melbourne, FL. We need a strong leader to help us increase membership and further improve our vocal skills.
