PROGRAM
Welcome!
At Nova Southeastern University (NSU) the mako shark is the embodiment of our spirit. Like makos, NSU students are not afraid to chase after what they want. It’s not unusual to hear about someone in the NSU family reaching extraordinary heights in their career, community, or life.
NSU prepares students for professional and personal success; but, we can’t do it alone. Your support helps us deliver an immersive education with unique opportunities to participate in meaningful research, get hands-on experience in real-world applications, and give back to communities.
We also are developing the next generation of business leaders with NSU’s new Business Innovation Academy at the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship. This scholarship program gives students the opportunity to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in just four years and includes mentoring, an internship, a summer boot camp, and a $20,000 investment from NSU upon graduation to use toward a business start-up or ramp-up. It is truly an excellent example of how we prepare our students for success.
These achievements contributed to NSU’s recognition in Forbes' 2020 list of America's Top Colleges. The university also continues to be highly ranked by U.S. News & World Report, including in its “Social Mobility” category, a distinction given to universities that advance social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded Pell Grants.
It all circles back to you—our Fellows Society donors—because all of these programs cost money, and we try to avoid using tuition funds. You give your time, talent, and treasure to help NSU Sharks dominate their future. That is why we share the stories of our new members and honor all donors committed to NSU’s vision, mission, and core values.
Thank you for your support.

Members of the Fellows Society,
Your support changes lives. Whether it is by investing in scientific pursuits that push the frontiers of research and discovery or by establishing a scholarship that will shape a young mind’s path, your support looks into the future—into what can be accomplished and what could not happen if it weren’t for your vision. It is a combination of foresight, generosity, and trust that defines your decision to invest in NSU’s mission.
This year, your gifts are funding, among other things, a Passion Project to help NSU University School students find their true calling before college. You also chose to establish scholarships and outfit study rooms. Some of you have become stewards of the marine environment or created a fund for music and art inside the library. You committed to support cancer research or donated an important piece of art for all to see. There are many ways you are helping students and the community.
Regardless of how different those choices may be, there is a common thread that ties all of you together. There was someone who inspired or taught you to give; and during our conversations, you expressed your firm belief that those whose lives you’ve touched will do as you have done. You believe in the life-altering chain reaction that philanthropy sparks.
The next few pages will share some of those stories, as well as the legacies that have been created.
Once again, thank you for all you do, and welcome to this amazing community.
Jennifer O'Flannery Anderson, Ph.D.

Leonard (Lenny) Comma learned at a young age that life lessons often come from difficult circumstances. When he was in eighth grade, a teacher at his new school told him he “didn’t belong” in her advanced algebra class. Rather than quit, Comma spent two hours every night studying math with his father. He finished the class with high exam scores.
Comma is now the chief executive officer at Jack in the Box, Inc., one of the nation’s largest restaurant chains. Comma rose through the ranks at the San Diego-based company and, after serving as president and chief operating officer, became CEO in 2014.
“Here is this kid who supposedly isn’t cut out for this math class, and he ends up as a finance major with a master’s degree in business and making a real run at business,” said Comma, an alumnus of NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship.
Growing up on Long Island, Comma was one of four boys born to immigrant parents from Trinidad and Tobago. “They came here because they believed in the American dream,” he said. “They worked really hard, found opportunities, and had multiple jobs. They did whatever they had to do and, ultimately, that afforded us a stable upbringing.”
Comma received a partial scholarship to Drexel University. Later, an internship at Exxon Mobil Corporation led to his first postgraduation, full-time position. The company, where he worked for 12 years, offered to pay his tuition for a master’s degree, and a mentor steered him to NSU.
Today, Comma gives back to NSU through his support of the Pathway Scholars program at the Huizenga College of Business. The program helps financially disadvantaged students succeed in college and develop business leadership careers through scholarships, special mentoring, life skills training, real-world business experience, internships, and other opportunities.
“Education was a big part of my path—whether it was the adversity I had to overcome or the real-world application I learned from the teachers at NSU, who made me feel I could achieve a lot,” Comma said.

Daniel J. Alfonso, M.S., joined NSU two years ago as the vice president of the Office of Facilities Management. He had been working in the government sector for 23 years, most recently as city manager at the City of Miami, when he decided to explore the possibilities of working for an institution of higher learning. Once he came to NSU and understood the challenge, he felt his skills could certainly serve the university, but realized there
was a lot more that he could contribute.
Born in Cuba, Alfonso arrived in the United States. in 1979. After graduating from high school in 1986, he joined the U.S. Army, wanting to do something in return for the opportunities the U.S. had offered his immigrant family. He was in the military for almost six years, including serving in the 24th Infantry Division during the Gulf War in 1990.
After completing his service, Alfonso went to work for Miami-Dade County. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in business and a master’s degree in finance, both from Florida International University. “Getting an education opened doors for me,” he said.
At NSU, Alfonso has created a student scholarship in memory of his grandfather, Juan Lopez. “I was thinking about how to help students and decided I was going to make a commitment to create a scholarship fund. I didn’t feel like I wanted my name on it; I almost did it anonymously. Instead, I put it under my grandfather’s name,” he said.
“He was a tremendous influence in my life. I even named my first son after him. So, when it was time to decide who I want to honor with this gift, it was a no brainer,” Alfonso added.

Jodi Kodish-Stav, D.D.S., arrived at NSU’s College of Dental Medicine (CDM) in July 1999, after several years in private practice. Impressed by the then-new dental college, which had opened just two years before and was the first new dental school to open in the U.S. in 24 years, Kodish-Stav joined NSU as a team leader in the Predoctoral Clinic at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus.
“I found that I really enjoyed teaching and being with the students. When
you’re in education, and a student says, ‘Oh, now I get that,’ or ‘thank you for showing that to me,’ you realize that you really made an impact and helped them to become a better dentist," she said. "It’s such a feeling of satisfaction. You’re helping someone to grow in a profession that you love.”
Now the CDM's associate dean of clinical informatics, Kodish-Stav is a longtime supporter of the university. It is something she shared with her late husband, Moshe Stav, M.D., a Broward County trauma surgeon and the son of Holocaust survivors. “My husband had always been very supportive of education. He had people who helped him with his,” she said.
Khodish-Stav pointed out, "People think, sometimes, that you must give a large gift to make it matter. I tell my colleagues, you’d be surprised if you give a bit every year, how it adds up. I thought, If I can donate to support the faculty and the students, it's a way to give back and also to pay it forward. I’m very fortunate that it’s something I am able to do. I hope to be able to continue to honor my husband's memory in this way," she added.

Jessica Dornbusch’s connection with NSU University School started long before her children were born. She had been there for debate tournaments during her high school years and returned later, as a filmmaker, to shoot Love and Debate, a film that would eventually be acquired for worldwide distribution.
Nowadays, USchool is also the place where her children, Scarlett and Abraham, study. After searching for
the right school in the area, she explained the choice without hesitation, “What really drew me to USchool was the sense of family that it had, the community, and the progressive nature of their education, above all.”
As someone who found her calling early in life, Dornbusch saw the need to nurture young students and help them discover their interests, to prepare them for success beyond school. “One of the things I thought was incredible about NSU University School was that they really try to form these individuals,” she said. “By the time that colleges are taking a look at them, they know who they are. It’s a full person.
“I started thinking, why wait until high school to start really forming these individuals and their passions? Why not start up a passion fund for middle schoolers? Anything that they are into, follow it through and set them up with an adviser when they start to identify their passions. So, we created a middle school Passion Project fund,” she added.
It is a long-term vision that plants seeds of things to discover and grow. Dornbusch hopes that this unique initiative will inspire many students to find their path with more confidence.

When Khanh Le underwent successful surgery in South Florida, he and his wife, Lynne Tran, pledged they would make a lasting gift in the field of medicine to show their gratitude.
The California couple heard about NSU from Tran’s nephew, Thinh
Tran, M.D., who is a member of the Executive Leadership Council at NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD).
Soon after, Le and Tran established the Khanh Le and Lynne Tran Endowed Allopathic Medicine Fund to provide scholarships and research support to students at NSU MD. In recognition of their gift, one of the college’s Problem-Based Learning Classrooms will be named the Khanh Le and Lynne Tran Classroom.
The couple’s story begins in their native Vietnam, where both lived until immigrating to the U.S. in the 1970s. Le and Tran met in 1981, when both were students at the School of Engineering at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
After graduating summa cum laude, Le was awarded a scholarship to Stanford University in California and moved there to earn a master’s degree. He later declined a spot in a Ph.D. program to accept a job in Silicon Valley, so he support his family, still struggling to settle in their new country.
By 1986, when Le and Tran got married, Tran was working as an engineer at Ford Aerospace and was part of the NASA Space Shuttle Program. After becoming a mother to the couple’s two children, she changed career paths. Today, Tran manages a bustling real estate business. Le is a successful entrepreneur and investor in Silicon Valley, where he founded several companies. Their adult children are now busy pursuing their own careers.
“We want to fulfill our pledge to contribute to the medical field in the best way we can,” Le said. “Not only to show our gratitude, but also help others like us. We know that training a new generation of doctors will provide a legacy of gratitude for other people whom these doctors will eventually help and cure. We are especially attracted to startup enterprises, like NSU MD."

Kulmeet Kundlas, M.D., and his wife, Manjit, were born in Punjab, India, where he studied medicine and she earned a master’s degree in biochemistry. Since moving to the United States, they have built a successful medical practice and raised their college-bound children.
Education has always been an important part of their lives,
and they always knew they wanted to help young people earn degrees. “Now, students have such debt that, when they graduate, they’ll be working 10 years initially just to pay off their loans,” said Kundlas, an internal medicine specialist in the Tampa area. “That’s usually why people shy away from medicine. It’s very expensive.”
The couple are helping to change that with a gift that will support student scholarships at NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD). They were inspired, in part, by the philanthropy of Drs. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel. “Once we heard about the Patels, it really inspired us to do something, too,” Kundlas said.
The allopathic college, named for Dr. Kiran C. Patel, opened in 2018 with an inaugural class of 53 students. “We believed it was a beautiful cause. We truly believe in this school. Whatever way we can help produce even one good physician; I think that is a huge investment,” said Kundlas.
The couple believe that one family can make a difference. And, they are committed to creating a legacy that will build the future of health care education.
“People give what they get,” Kundlas said. “If they get something, they will give it back, and that starts a chain reaction. You light something; others carry on. And it becomes bigger and bigger.”

When Stan and Rhoda Linnick moved from Texas to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, they weren’t familiar with Nova Southeastern University. That changed when Stan Linnick became director of the Susie and Alan B. Levan NSU Ambassadors Board in 2014.
Since then, the Linnicks have witnessed the extraordinary growth and development of the institution. They also have discovered unlimited
opportunities to become engaged in different areas of the university.
The couple were initially inspired to give to NSU in honor of their daughter, Stacy Middleman. She is a two-time breast cancer survivor and the author of Dear Cancer, Love Stacy, a book about her experiences with cancer, which began at age 35.
The Linnicks’ gift, in part, will benefit the NSU's Rumbaugh-Goodwin Institute for Cancer Research, Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography, and Mailman Segal Center for Human Development.
“We hope our gift will, in some measure, continue the excellent research and important work taking place at NSU,” Stan Linnick said.
Rhoda and Stan Linnick National Pediatric Cancer Foundation
The National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF) was established 28 years ago by two parents whose children were battling cancer. Today, those children are cancer survivors, and the co-founding parents continue to participate in the foundation’s mission to save lives, following the foundation’s goal to conduct collaborative research that would focus on less toxic therapies for children, unlike harsh treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation.
Today, 25 hospitals, as well as many doctors and researchers, participate in the foundation’s Sunshine Project, a national research consortium. These hospitals, doctors, and scientists meet annually in Tampa to prioritize what research trials or translational studies will begin in the upcoming year.
With 14 different initiatives, the foundation is working to develop a new drug to treat pediatric cancer (there are only 10 drugs currently available). It also supports one of the largest brain tumor trials in the country, among other studies.
“We like to be the catalyst group that gets a good idea off the table, gets the science behind it proven, and then passes it on to the federal government or other entities to do larger trials,” said David Frazer, the foundation’s CEO.
During the past two years, the foundation has partnered with NSU to host Fashion Funds the Cure, a fashion show benefiting young cancer patients. Proceeds from this successful initiative are channeled to support pediatric sarcoma research in NSU’s Cell Therapy Institute.
Through their collaboration, the foundation and NSU demonstrate how the community—academic institutions, businesses, social leaders, philanthropists, and everyday citizens—can work together to help save children’s lives.
“We’re very grateful for NSU and this partnership,” Frazer said. “We think it is the perfect marriage and partnership to move the needle toward systematic change and to make a difference in this disease.”

Tobin Rockley’s musical roots date back to his grandparents, Melvin and Mildred Rockley, who opened a music store in 1946 in Lakewood, Colorado. His parents were both music teachers who helped expand the Rockley Music Center, which is still operated today by Tobin; his wife, Liane; and his son, Aslan.
“Right from our roots, we were very involved in music education support,” said Rockley, who joined the family business in the 1980s and has extensive experience in music performance and teaching.
Today, Rockley is president and director of the Rockley Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded to support music education by raising money for scholarships and donating or lending musical instruments. Since 2009, the foundation has donated almost $30 million to secondary education institutions and nonprofit organizations throughout the country.
“About 13 years ago, we felt our support of our local musical community could be better realized from a separate, nonprofit organization,” Rockley said. Today, we’re everywhere from New York City to San Diego. It was certainly a departure from our initial vision, but, clearly, the universe had a different plan."
The foundation was introduced to the university when Rockley visited his brother in Plantation, Florida. “We were looking at places where we thought it would be good to expand. NSU’s name came up first, and we met with the university.
“There was a great initiative at the Alvin Sherman Library that we really liked,” he said. Now, the foundation’s gift supports an interactive series of fine arts appreciation programming at the library. Primarily for children, it focuses on music literacy and appreciation.
“It wasn’t just music,” Rockley said. “It was music with literature and other disciplines that we thought could make compelling programming. We believed we could provide tools to foster ongoing success for the library, and its commitment to music. We love the creativity."
Rockley added, “We try to support very talented and creative people. We listen to their visions, and we try to turn them into realities. We’ve been blessed to become partners with many of these people, and we see some of the outcomes. It’s pretty magical.”

For 32 years, the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation (NSSTF) has worked to protect the marine environment and save sea turtles from extinction. Established in 1987, the foundation began when a group of business owners in the Florida Keys noticed degrading changes in the marine environment, including fewer sea turtles.
“Even though it was the overall environment they noticed was deteriorating, the sea turtles were really the main focus,” said Larry Wood, Ph.D., a conservation biologist and an NSSTF spokesman. “These were business people, not biologists, but they figured they could do something about it. Through their business acumen, they were able to raise funds that were distributed to various conservation, research, and educational projects related to sea turtles.”
At NSU, a gift from the foundation will fund education programming and staff at the university’s partner site, the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC), home to Captain, the resident green sea turtle. The center is naming its National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation Education Building in recognition of the gift.
Opened in 2017 at the historic Carpenter House in Hollywood Beach, Florida, the MEEC was forged from a partnership between NSU and Broward County to expand sea turtle education and public outreach. NSU’s Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography manages the center on behalf of Broward County.
NSSTF also is funding the construction and installation of a new, permanent educational exhibit at the MEEC that will focus on sea turtles and the foundation’s work.
“That’s probably the most valuable thing the foundation does," said Wood. "Yes, we provide money, and that’s a valuable thing in itself. But, it’s also who we provide funding to that makes a big difference.”

When Shirley Toliver, M.S., Florida District Community Relations Representative, heard about the Pathway Scholars program at NSU’s H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship, she knew it was a perfect fit for the UPS Foundation. The philanthropic arm of United Parcel Service (UPS) is
providing support to NSU’s Pathway Scholars program, which works in conjunction with Take Stock in Children to improve success outcomes for disadvantaged high school students.
“We are a global organization, a multibillion-dollar corporation,” said Toliver, an NSU alumna. “We don’t just do business globally. We want to intentionally be global citizens with a global responsibility, global connections, and a global conscience."
“UPS is able to support local programs, like Pathway Scholars at NSU," Toliver pointed out, "because it has allocated charitable and grant funds to support the communities where it does business and where its employees live and work. We want to make an impact and empower these communities so that they continue to thrive.”
With a corporate culture of volunteerism, the foundation supports local organizations where employees may already be volunteers. Toliver, who earned a master’s degree in Human Resources Management from the Huizenga College of Business, had been a volunteer at the Take Stock in Children nonprofit agency when she heard about Pathway Scholars at NSU.
“I knew exactly what that program did,” she said. “We had volunteered as mentors at the Take Stock in Children program. And, we held all our meetings at NSU campuses. So, it was a no brainer for UPS to partner with the Pathway Scholars program. For me to be an alumna of NSU and see a program like Pathway Scholars on its beautiful campus is awesome. I cannot say enough about how proud I am," she added.
“Pathway Scholars is a wonderful program for us to get more deeply involved in. I see it expanding in all types of ways that impact the future of Broward County,” Toliver said.

As an avid supporter of NSU’s Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center, Peter Woolf was thrilled to be among the first to help update one of the library’s 23 study rooms. The renovated rooms, frequently used by students and patrons, include new furnishings and modern technology that allow users to share and work collaboratively.
Woolf and his wife, Fran, established the Library Study Room Endowed
Fund to support the refurbishment and maintenance of the study space now named after them. “I know it’s a very popular room,” said Woolf, an NSU alumnus. “I feel good about that. I’m glad to see students using it. These rooms provide a different way of studying. The world is changing, technology is changing, and the library is adapting to that. We need to move with that, otherwise we become defunct.”
Born in Britain, Woolf graduated from the University of Leeds in 1971. He worked as a stockbroker and financial analyst in London before moving to the United States in 1976. In 1977, he joined Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers). There, he became a partner and specialized in tax issues for international corporations, working at the accounting firm for almost 30 years.
Woolf’s connection to NSU dates to his days as a graduate student in 1977. “I’ve seen NSU grow and grow. It’s just phenomenal. I walk around the campus and see all these young people strolling around and that’s wonderful. It’s an innovative university. It’s a beautiful campus. It has everything that a student could want. Once you’re on campus, you feel that,” he said.
Through a unique partnership with Broward County, the Alvin Sherman Library is accessible to all county residents. Its state-of-the-art building is at the center of NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus.
“Some people might say that we don’t need libraries anymore, now that we have computers, but that’s not true,” Woolf said. “It’s great to be involved with an outstanding library. People who haven’t been through it don't realize just how amazing it is. We have to get the message out.”

FIN CLUB We celebrate annual donors who give as little as $1 a month, because small, consistent gifts can add up to a larger impact.
As cumulative giving reaches the benchmarks outlined below, members of the Fin Club will grow their collection of exclusive fin pins!
Yellow Fin ($1–$250) Red Fin ($251–$500) Green Fin ($501–$750) Blue Fin ($751–$999)
SMALL, RECURRING GIFTS YIELD BIG IMPACTS Monthly Gift $83.34 • Annually $1,000
Commit to giving $1,000 for five years and name your own Changing Lives Scholarship.
PRESIDENT’S ASSOCIATES Donors who give $1,000–$49,999 for the current fiscal year (NSU’s Fiscal Year ends June 30) are part of NSU’s longest-standing giving society, the President’s Associates. (This includes Changing Lives scholarship donors.)
A year into his presidency, Abraham S. Fischler, Ed.D., founded the President’s Associates to recognize donors who make annual gifts of $1,000 or more to NSU. Forty-three generous donors made the President’s Associates inaugural roster. Today, more than 700 donate each year.
President’s Associates gifts support students whose dream is to attend our nationally recognized research university, and faculty members whose dream is to make the world a better place by inspiring young minds, advancing scientific research, and expanding outreach initiatives.
FELLOWS SOCIETY Today, the university continues to fulfill dreams to make people’s lives better and improve our community thanks, in no small part, to members of NSU’s Fellows Society—individuals, corporations, and trusts who have made cumulative gifts of $50,000 or more.
