Thus the de facto transfer of power took place
on 1 November 1954 followed by de jure transfer
on 16 August 1962. Until 1 November 1954, it was
under French rule.

Geography
Location
• Karaikal is a small coastal enclave of territory
which was formerly part of French India.
• Karaikal is bounded on the North and South by
Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu state, on
the west by Tiruvarur district (also belonging to
Tamil Nadu), and on the East by the Bay of
Bengal.
• The enclave is located 132 km south of the city
of Puducherry, 158 km east of Trichy and is
known for its rich cultural heritage.
• Karaikal is known all over the country for its
unique and the only temple devoted to the
Lord Saneeswara (Lord Saturn) at Thirunallar.
9
• Besides Saneeshwara, Karaikal is the Gateway
to various other places of worship in the eastern
coast of Tamil Nadu. Two famous shrines,
Velankanni for Christians and Nagore for Muslims
are nearby Karaikal. The French flavour still
persists in the peaceful land of Karaikal.
• In Tirumalairayanpattinam, there is a famous
temple called Ayirankaliamman temple, ayiram
means 1000. We can see this god once in 5
years, because whatever offerings are given to
this god, it should be 1008. So they will open for 3
days once in 5 years, and many devotees from
all over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will come
and worship.

17 Airport
Super Airport Infrastructure (India) Pvt Ltd, (SAIIPL), a
business unit, submitted a feasibility study report.
SAIIPL had stated that commercial air connectivity to
the town would prove viable. SAIIPL carried out an in-
depth study of the tourists’ traffic profile to important
pilgrim centres and heritage spots located near here
including Vailankanni, Nagore, Tirunallar,
Tarangambadi, Tirukkadaiyur, Poompuhar,
Vaitheeswarankoil, Chidambaram, Kumbakonam
and Gangaikondacholapuram.
18 Airport
With the help of the Tourism Departments of
Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, SAIIPL had also
projected the expected number of tourists
who would choose the air travel option. The
Government gave the NOC to SAIIPL.
A proposal to create a merchant airport at
Karaikal in Puducherry has been cleared by
the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and the
Puducherry administration.
19 AIRPORT
The administration had identified around 600 acres
of land in revenue villages falling under Nedungadu
and Kottucherry. Mr. J.V. Chowdhury, Chairman of
Karaikal Airport Private Limited, said the new airport
would come up on a 550-acre land with a 3-km-
long runway. The capacity of the terminal building
would be 1,400 passengers during peak hour in both
arrival and departures. The cost of the project
would be Rs. 250 crore and work could be
completed within 18 months.
Tirunallar near Karaikal, has
the ancient temple of
Darbharanyeswara. This
temple was visited by the
Saint Tirugnana Sambandar in
the 7th century A.D. who
sang padigams (decadal
verses) in praise of the Lord.
Likewise, his contemporary
Saint Tirnnavukkarasu and
later, Saint Sundarar (9th century A.D.) had visited the
temple and sung padigams
extolling the Lord. Saint
Arunagirinathar (15th century
A.D.) had also visited it and sung hymns included in his monumental work
Tiruppugazh.
The name "TIRUNALLARU" is association of
Nala of the Nishadha country who got
his deliverance from effects of Shani
(Saturn) by invoking the Lord's mercy
here. (Nala+Aru-Nallaru). The word "Aru"
conveys the meaning "to heal" and the
two words taken together _ Nala's
place of redemption or the place where
Nala secured his redemption from the
hold of Saturn through the Lord's Grace.

IEEE mock examination conducted at NIT- Karaikal
Monday, Apr 25, 2011, TIRUCHI: A total of 120 students
appeared for the AIEEE mock examination
conducted at the N I T- Puducherry at Karaikal on
Sunday by the first year students.
The material for the mock exam was provided by the
Rotaract Club of the N I T – Tiruchi (NIT-T), the
mentoring institution. The initiative according to
G.Swaminathan, Coordinator for NIT- Puducherry
based at NIT-T, was a familiarisation exercise since the
awareness level of the student community on AIEEE
was poor in the Karaikal region. The mock exam was
conducted at short notice through advertisements in
local cable television channels, and sensitisation
campaign in a couple of schools.

aspirants on the mark scoring
techniques, particularly the ways to
avoid negative marking, Dr.
