Configuring VMWare 7 Workstation A. Open the VMWare Workstation shortcut from your desktop. B. Click New Virtual Machine. C. Select Custom and click Next. D. For the hardware compatibility screen, leave the settings alone and click Next. E. If required by your instructor, select Installer Disc, otherwise configure Installer disc image file. F. Your virtual machine name should be CentOS 5.4. G. Click Browse and select your USB drive. Click Make New Folder and call it NITA212. Click OK. H. Please ensure that your location is set for the USB drive. Click Next. I. Leave the processor configuration alone and click Next. J. Configure the virtual machine to use 1024MB of RAM. Click Next. K. Configure your networking to be Bridged. This setting is very important. Click Next. L. Leave the I/O settings alone and click Next. M. Make sure Create a new virtual disk is selected and then click Next. N. Verify that SCSI is the selected type of disk and click Next. O. Allocate 20GB of disk space for the drive. Click Next. P. Leave the disk filename alone and click Next. Q. Click Finish. Click Power on this virtual machine if it doesnʼt automatically start. II. Starting the CentOS 5.4 Installer A. On the initial boot screen, press Enter. B. Select Skip when prompted to perform the media test and press Enter. C. When the graphical installer starts, click Next on the first screen. D. Select English as your language and click Next. E. Select U.S. English as the keyboard layout and click Next. F. Click ʻYesʼ when prompted about erasing all data on the hard drive. II. Partitioning the Hard Drive & Configuring the Boot-Loader A. When you reach the hard drive partitioning screen, click the drop-down at the top of the screen and select Create Custom Layout and then click Next. B. Select the line where it says “Free” from the partition editor and click New. Configure the partition structure as listed below, making sure to setup the filesystem and partition size accurately. 1. Note: After inputting your size for a partition, the final result will vary slightly in the list. 2. Note: You will notice an ʻExtendedʼ partition structure for /dev/sda4; this is normal. # Mount Point Filesystem Type Size / ext3 3072MB (3GB) /usr ext3 8192MB (8GB) /home ext3 5120MB (5GB) /var ext3 2048MB (2GB) None swap 2039MB (2GB) C. Review your partition layout with a classmate or the instructor and then click Next. D. On the GRUB boot loader page, click Next.

Lab #2 - Installing CentOS 5.4 into VMWare 7 Stanislav

Lab Steps:I. Configuring VMWare 7 Workstation

A. Open the VMWare Workstation shortcut from your desktop.B. Click New Virtual Machine.C. Select Custom and click Next.

D. For the hardware compatibility screen, leave the settings alone and click Next.E. If required by your instructor, select Installer Disc, otherwise configure Installer disc image file.

F. Your virtual machine name should be CentOS 5.4.

G. Click Browse and select your USB drive. Click Make New Folder and call it NITA212. Click OK.

H. Please ensure that your location is set for the USB drive. Click Next.I. Leave the processor configuration alone and click Next.J. Configure the virtual machine to use 1024MB of RAM. Click Next.

K. Configure your networking to be Bridged. This setting is very important. Click Next.L. Leave the I/O settings alone and click Next.

M. Make sure Create a new virtual disk is selected and then click Next.

N. Verify that SCSI is the selected type of disk and click Next.O. Allocate 20GB of disk space for the drive. Click Next.P. Leave the disk filename alone and click Next.Q. Click Finish. Click Power on this virtual machine if it doesnʼt automatically start.

II. Starting the CentOS 5.4 Installer

A. On the initial boot screen, press Enter.B. Select Skip when prompted to perform the media test and press Enter.

C. When the graphical installer starts, click Next on the first screen.D. Select English as your language and click Next.E. Select U.S. English as the keyboard layout and click Next.

F. Click ʻYesʼ when prompted about erasing all data on the hard drive.

II. Partitioning the Hard Drive & Configuring the Boot-LoaderA. When you reach the hard drive partitioning screen, click the drop-down at the top of the screen

and select Create Custom Layout and then click Next.B. Select the line where it says “Free” from the partition editor and click New. Configure the partition

structure as listed below, making sure to setup the filesystem and partition size accurately.

III. Basic Configuration Steps

A. Click Edit for the network adapter. Select Manual Configuration and fill in proper IP Addressand Netmask. Uncheck the IPv6 functionality. Click OK.

B. Select manually for the hostname configuration and fill in a proper hostname. ConfigureGateway and Primary DNS. Click Next.

C. Select America/Detroit from the drop-down list for the timezone and then click Next.

D. Configure the systemʼs root password to be: linuxlab and then click Next.

E. Check the boxes for both ʻDesktop - Gnomeʼ and ʻDesktop - KDEʼ. Select ʻCustomize nowʼ and

then click Next.F. Select Servers from the left side and check the boxes for Printing Support, Server

Configuration Tools, and Web Server.G. Click Server Configuration Tools linue and the “Optional Packages” button should enable. Click

it. Uncheck the boxes for system-config-nfs and system-config-samba. Leave all other boxesalready checked alone. Click Close.

H. Select Base System from the left menu. In the right window-pane, make sure the following boxes

are checked: Administration Tools, Base, System Tools, and X Window System.I. Select Development from the left menu. In the right window-pane, select Development Tools.

Click Next to proceed.J. Click Next. The software installation will begin and should finish in 15 minutes. Click Reboot.

IV. Initial CentOS 5.4 Setup

A. When the system reboots, CentOS 5.4 will automatically start.B. Click Foward when presented with the Welcome screen.C. When presented with the Firewall settings, leave them as-is and click Forward.

D. Select Disabled from the drop-down list when configuring SELinux. Click Forward.E. Click Yes when prompted to relabel the filesystem due to our SELinux change.

F. On the ʻKdumpʼ screen merely click Forward.G. On the “Date and Time” screen, click the Network Time Protocol tab and check the Enable

Network Time Protocol box. Click Forward.H. Create a user account for your general usage. Make your username your first nameʼs first letter,

and your full last name -- e.g., “bjones” for Bob Jones. Set your password to whatever you like,

but be sure you wonʼt forget it to save time later. When your account details have beenconfigured, click Forward.

I. On the ʻSound Cardʼ screen, click Forward.J. On the ʻAdditional CDsʼ screen, click Finish.

K. Click OK to reboot the system.L. When the system reboots, login to your account for the first time and look around some.M. Figure out how to logout of your session without shutting down or restarting.

N. Within the VMWare software, click the Snapshot button to save a copy of your system as “Lab#2 Completed”.
