Lab #3 - Interacting with Linux Desktop Environments Stanislav

Lab Steps:I. Installing additional software with ʻPackage Managerʼ (a.k.a. pirut )

A. Select Applications > Add/Remove Software from the GNOME menubar.

B. Select Edit > Repositories from the Package Manager menubar.C. In the Repository Manager additionally check the contrib and centosplus boxes. Click Close.D. In the left menu, select CentOS Extras. In the right menu, check the XFCE-4.4 box. Click Apply.

E. When prompted for ʻpackage selectionsʼ, click Continue. Click Continue for ʻdependenciesʼ.F. When prompted to ʻImport keyʼ, click Import key.G. Click OK once the software installation is completed. Close the Package Manager.

H. Logout of your current GNOME session. Do not restart or shutdown.

II. Interacting with KDE (K Desktop Environment)

A. On the Welcome screen, click Session.

B. Select KDE from the list and click Change Session.C. Log into your user account again. When prompted, click Just For This Session so that the next  

time you login to your account, GNOME will be the desktop environment by default.D. Click on the colorful menu icon on the lower left corner of the screen and select Control Center.E. Under Appearance & Themes, search the sub-menus and set the following configuration:

• Background: Aurora

• Color Scheme: Evex

• Screensaver: Fireworks 3D

• Widget Style: Phase

• Window Decoration: Glow

F. Close the Control Center when you are done with configuration of the above items.G. Log out of your KDE session when done.

III. Interacting with XFce

A. On the Welcome screen, click Session.

B. Select XFce 4 from the list and click Change Session.C. Log into your user account again. When prompted, click Just For This Session.

D. When displayed, uncheck the box for Display tips on startup and click Close.E. Click on the XFce menu icon, select Settings > Settings Manager.

F. Configure the following settings by searching through the menus:

• Panel Manager: Autohide 

• Background Color: Green (shade)

• Window Manager Style: Smallscreen

• User Interface Theme: Xfce-kolors

• Splash Screen: NoneG. Close the XFce Settings Manager and any additional open setting windows.

H. Click the power icon on the bottom menu and logout of your session.

IV. Interacting with the GNOME Desktop EnvironmentA. Login to your account again. You should automatically be back into GNOME.

B. Select System > Preferences from the menu at the top and find where to change these options:

• Theme: Bluecurve

• Background: Blue Swirl

• Screensaver: Cosmos

• Power Management Icon: Always display icon

C. Close any open configuration windows you may have open still.

V. Additional GNOME Tasks

A. Configure Nautilus (GNOME File Browser) to Use a Dual-Pane Layout1. Open “Computer” from the desktop by double-clicking it. This is an instance of Nautilus.

2. Select Edit > Preferences from the file browser windowʼs menu.3. Click the Behavior tab. Check the box for Always open in browser windows. Click Close.

4. Close your file browser window and double-click on “Computer” again. Verify you now have a

double-pane file browser layout. Close the file browser again.

B. Configure Window Shading1. Select System > Preferences > Windows.

2. Under the Title Bar Action, select Roll Up from the drop-down list and click Close.3. Open “Computer” again. Double-click the title bar and verify that the window does “roll up”.

Double-clicking the title bar again should make it “roll down”.

C. Take a Screenshot and Create a Folder

1. Select Applications > Accessories > Take Screenshot from the menubar.2. Set the name from your screenshot as <first letter><last name>.png e.g. bjones.png and

save the image to your Desktop. Click Save.3. Double-click your “home” directory from the Desktop. Right-click inside of the ʻhomeʼ directory

window and click Create folder, name the folder ʻPicturesʼ.4. Drag-and-drop your screenshot from the desktop into your newly created Pictures folder.

5. Close your file browser window.

D. *Extra Credit* Win at Nibbles!

1. Figure out how to play the game called Nibbles. Play on slow speed (default).2. Play until you get bored or class ends and take a screenshot of the scores page.

3. Show me your scores screenshot (yes, it has to be the screenshot).4. The highest score in the class will receive extra credit points. Any ties will be settled.
