Elements 5AChemical Properties

• Nitrogen-Nitrogen form compounds through biological activity.• Phosphorus-Phosphorus also combines with metals to form

compounds known as phosphides.

• Arsenic-Arsenic combines with oxygen more slowly at room temperatures. The thin coating of arsenic oxide that forms on the element prevents it from reacting further.

• Antimony-It does dissolve in some hot acids, however, and in aqua regia. Aqua regia is a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids. It often reacts with materials that do not react with either acid separately.

• Bismuth-Bismuth combines slowly with oxygen at room temperature. Bismuth also reacts with most acids.

Nitrogen

1.Nitrogen is odorless, tasteless, and colorless.2.Nitrogen gas (N2) makes up 78.1% of the

volume of the Earth's air. Symbol: N

Phosphorus

1.Highly reactive, poisonous, non-metallic element occurring naturally in phosphates.

2.It is used in safety matches, pyrotechnics. Symbol: P

Arsenic1. Arsenic is a naturally occurring substance, It

occurs in several forms, often in compounds with other chemical elements.

2.Arsenic and all of its compounds are poisonous but the toxicity varies.

Antimony

1.An amorphous metastable form of the element formed by cooling gaseous antimony rapidly.

2.It is more chemically reactive than the metallic form of the element.

Symbol: Sb
