NJ TRANSITGRID: MICROGRID TECHNOLOGY AS THE CORNERSTONE OF A TRANSPORTATION RESILIENCE STRATEGY
“The worst disaster for public transit systems (e.g., bus, subway, commuter rail) in the nation’s history.”
-President’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force Report (Aug. 2013)
First International Conference,Washington D.C September 16-18, 2015. 3

KEY LESSONS LEARNED FROM SUPERSTORM SANDY
ENERGY RESILIENCE KEY TO TRANSPORTATION
After floodwater subsides, electric power needed to resume service.
ENERGY SPEEDS RECOVERY
Electrical outages serve only to complicate the path to recovery forcing reliance on emergency generators to energize key equipment, pump stations, and facilities.
DIESEL GENERATORS ARE NOT THE SOLUTION
First International Conference,Washington D.C September 16-18, 2015. 4
1. Fuel supply “severely impaired” following Superstorm Sandy.
2. Cannot move trains with generators. 3. Generators operated well beyond continuous run
time. 4. Generators raised air quality and emissions
concerns.

PRESIDENT’S HURRICANE SANDY REBUILDING STRATEGY (AUG. 2013) “We’re encouraging the adoption of microgrid technologies to update our energy systems so that they are more resilient, harnessing technological innovation throughout our rebuilding solutions, and ensuring that our decisions are guided by current science and best available data, while anticipating future risks.”
First International Conference,Washington D.C September 16-18, 2015. 5

NJ TRANSITGRID: MICROGRID TECHNOLOGY AS THE CORNERSTONE OF A TRANSPORTATION RESILIENCE STRATEGY
A group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. A microgrid can connect/disconnect from the grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected and island mode.

MICROGRIDS: Why do it?
First International Conference,Washington D.C September 16-18, 2015. 10
80-90% of all grid failures begin at the distribution level of electricity service.* Promotes more competition which equals more choice and more reliable, cleaner
energy at competitive prices. Cities and states see microgrids to spur economic growth by increasing jobs to
build and manage the microgrid and by attracting businesses that depend on premium energy that is always available.
Certain energy market trends favor microgrids, Natural gas and solar prices – two fuels for microgrids – have fallen dramatically in recent years. Lower fuel prices make microgrids cost-effective to operate. Prices also are declining for electric energy storage.
New smart grid technology allow microgrids to be more sophisticated. Real-time data displays, grid interfaces, and various software advances maximize their use and resources for greatest economy.
Industry and government officials are very worried about grid reliability, security, and accountability. Microgrids can keep the power flowing when the central grid faces threats.

MICROGRIDS DELIVER RESILIENCE: Benefits for end users
First International Conference,Washington D.C September 16-18, 2015. 11
Provide secure, reliable and resilient energy. Earn revenue and reduce energy costs through buying and selling into
wholesale energy and ancillary services markets. Deliver high quality power and thermal energy, which is especially
important to data centers, life sciences, e-commerce, pharmaceutical companies and similar tech-driven operations.
Customize energy operations to the distinct needs of the host. Offer a way to produce and control energy supply locally. Help businesses and institutions enhance their environmental reputation.

First International Conference,Washington D.C September 16-18, 2015. 14
System design Overview: Large generator and microgrid for trains.
— 100+ MW gas-fired, with heat recovery. — Microgrid connected to large, critical traction power stations.
Distributed energy resources for distributed facilities, (several buildings and terminals.)
— Solar, small and large scale. — CHP, micro-turbines, fuel cells.
Use of non-revenue electric vehicles. Potential opportunities USDOE studying to promote resilient microgrids, such as NJ TRANSITGRID: Wholesale and Regulatory Markets. Potential for Securitization/Monetization of Benefits.
