Updated 2019/2020

Vital Instructions

Important – you MUST do this

Within 24 hours of your arrival into Montenegro you MUST register your presence either at a

Police Station OR at the Tourist Office.

If you were staying at a Hotel, this would be done automatically on your arrival and you would

not even realise that you had registered.

Montenegro Living will assist you to do this if you are in any doubt, but in fact it is very easy.

The easiest and best place to register is at the Tourist Office in Hercig Novi.

Take your passport(s) and the ‘house document’ (enclosed in the ‘House File’) with you and

pass them to the man at the Tourist Office and tell him that you wish to register, he will do

the rest.

Initial registration fee: 1,00 Euros/person

Plus daily payment:

Adults 0,90 Euro/day

Aged 12 - 18 0,45 Euros/day

Under 12 no charge

WARNING – If you travel out of Montenegro for the day please ensure that you REMOVE this

registration card from your passport before you cross the border. Otherwise, the immigration

official may keep the card and you will have to go through the same registration process on

your return to Montenegro.

Adapters UK power adapters – see power adapters

Agents Our agents are Montenegro Living.

Their main letting office is sited at Herceg Novi. To drive there, go to

the main road and turn right towards Herceg Novi. At the traffic lights

filter right and go downhill. At the bottom of the hill you will see a

‘triangle’ at the road junction. The office is immediately on the left as

you turn left at this junction up the one way road. Park and walk

towards the shops that were on the left as you turned left and the office

is sited on the 1st floor of the last building of this row.

Air Conditioning Two units are provided, operated by the white remote controls – one

sited on each floor. They are very effective and on hot nights, the use

of the upstairs one alone will effectively cool down the main bedroom.

Airport There are two airports close to Njivice, Tivat - sited towards the Kotor

part of the bay and Dubrovnik sited in the other direction.

Both are about 40 minutes drive away.

Most people arrive at Dubrovnik and Montenegro Living will, on

request, arrange pick-up and transfer to Njivice. Cost EUR 40.0 (2017)

B

Basics A local village shop is available – see Shop, otherwise please feel free

to use whatever has been left in the kitchen cupboards – normally

coffee, sugar, salt, spices, honey and other non-perishables.

Banks Banking facilities are plentiful. Cash machines are readily available and

more shops are accepting cards. However, cash is still the accepted way

to pay in restaurants, although most are now accepting card payments.

Beach Towels Beach towels are NOT provided; this is because sun cream damages

them.

Beer The local name for beer is ‘Pivo’. The most common, local beer is ‘Nik

Pivo’. It is made to a recipe that is only found in Montenegro and it is

delicious.

The glass bottles are recyclable and a deposit is paid on each bottle.

You may find that the town supermarkets will NOT allow you to buy

beer in glass bottles, but will insist that you take the beer sold in plastic

bottles or cans. This is because of the deposit.

The local village shop will also explain that you should return the

bottles. Please return any glass beer bottles to the shop that you

bought it from – otherwise they lose out. Once they understand that

you will return the bottles, they will not charge you the deposit.

2013 – No shop or supermarket will let you have beer in bottles, cans

only.

2017 – It’s possible to buy beer in bottles too – various smaller ones

and with no deposit or return of bottles

Bills It is highly unlikely that anyone will knock on the door asking payment

for a ‘bill’. If they do, it’s a scam. Our Agents handle all bills.

Binoculars Not provided. We strongly suggest that you take a pair, you will be

disappointed otherwise.

Boats A small child’s inflatable is provided, please feel free to use this.

Books A selection is provided. We ask that you leave a few to add to the

collection.

C

Car Hire We strongly suggest you hire a car. Public transport is not really good

enough.

Car hire in Montenegro is far cheaper than it is in Croatia. Montenegro

Living will advise. However, if you plan on doing a lot of driving in

Croatia, then we advise hiring a Croatian ‘plate’ car, this is due to the

antagonism that is still prevalent in Croatia towards Montenegro.

Although we have never had a Montenegro ‘plate’ car damaged, we

have heard of reports that this has happened.

Cost of car hire for 2 weeks at Dubrovnik airport (Sept 2009) was EUR

620 – or EUR 45/day.

Montenegro Car Hire

We have had good experiences with the following:

Company – DNT Company ‘rent-a-car’

Contact Dejan Sofranac Mob +382 69 076 056 or +382 67 211 069 or

+382 68 076 056.

Mail –[email protected]

Web – www.dntcompany.me

You can also use the village shop as a contact. The shop-keeper is some

kind of relation to Dejan.

Cost was EUR 35 per day (for a period of 3-5 days which reduces to EUR

25 per day for a period of 11-20 days) and included free delivery/pick

up to/from Njivice. They also supplied a mobile phone in case of

problems and Dejan spoke good English. A ‘green card’ was supplied as

standard. Check the website for 2018 updates.

………………………….

Documents required

A ‘green card’ insurance document is necessary if you are planning to

cross borders.

A UK (or your National) Driving License and your passport

Page 7: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

If you intend to take your own car to Montenegro, then be aware that

from 2010 all UK (and we have been informed European) car insurance

companies will not arrange car insurance for Montenegro.

Luckily, it would appear that the Montenegrian Authorities have

become aware of this and will sell you a ‘Green Card’ for your intended

stay at the Border Point. Note that this is only available at main border

points, and is not available at the little border point above Njivice.

If you cannot face driving, then a taxi firm is available that is said to

speak fair English – see Taxis.

Chairs Spare chairs are kept in the basement.

Cleaner A cleaner will attend once a week as part of the Agency agreement.

Cleaning materials Kept either under the kitchen sink or in the Hall cupboard.

Cutlery etc Full cutlery, glasses, mugs etc are provided for up to 6 people, all kept

in the kitchen.

Disco One exists in town – off the main square. That’s all we know about it. If

you want nightlife – go to Budva

Drying Clothes drying. In good weather clothes lines are sited within the lime

trees at the rear of the house. These are ours; however you may

occasionally find that our neighbour uses them.

In inclement weather, two drying racks are provided in the basement.

One of these is heated. To operate the heated rack, in addition to

plugging in, there is a switch sited at one end.

Tumble Dryer is provided in the basement.

Driving Drive on the right.

Use HEADLIGHTS at ALL times. It is illegal to drive without them on. This

applies in Croatia as well.

Be careful; be very careful when driving in Montenegro. The locals are

crazy behind a wheel and blind corner overtaking on roads outside of

the towns is common.

Local driving has greatly improved over time, as the Government ran a

massive ‘Safe Driving Campaign’, and also due to congestion, however

still expect the unexpected.

If driving when the roads are wet, then please massively increase your

stopping distance. The stone mixture in the road surface turns very

slippery.

If you have an accident – then you MUST report this to the Police. See

contact numbers for the telephone number.

Driving your own car – see Car Hire above.

Doctor Treatment and Hospitals are free for holders of a UK Passport. If you

need a doctor, hospital or dentist - please contact Montenegro Living

for advice.

DVD A DVD player is provided and there is a selection of DVD’s. As for books

– contributions to the collection are welcome. Instructions for this and

the TV etc are located in the drawer underneath the TV.

See TV for additional instructions.

E

Electricity Voltage is 220 volt

This house is three-phase powered. Please do not attempt repairs

yourselves, there is a possibility of voltages up to 440v. If repairs are

needed, please contact Montenegro Living.

The property was completely rewired to EUR standards in 2012 with

circuit breakers installed.

The power will be ON when you arrive. If the local fuse circuit breakers

trip, use the key marked ‘1333’ to open the main breaker box (sited to

the left of the front door as you face it from the outside) and switch all

the breakers ‘on’.

Extension cables Please plug heaters, irons and any heavy usage electrical items directly

into the wall sockets without using extension cables. Although

extension cables are fine for low power items such as lights, laptops,

chargers etc; Montenegrin type extension cables are really not up to

the specification required for heaters etc and the use of one for a

heater caused a small electrical fire in the past.

Page 10: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

F

First Aid A First Aid box is kept in the bottom kitchen drawer. If you do happen

to use any of the items, then we would appreciate their replacement.

Fishing A rod is kept in the basement, please feel free to use.

Food Food, in general, is good and completely without preservatives – this

means that bread, for example, needs to be bought almost daily. Shops

will sell half loaves; you will find a knife next to the bread to cut it

yourself.

Fridge Will probably be unplugged on your arrival. The socket is immediately

to the left of the fridge. Please unplug and leave with the door ajar

when you depart.

G

Games Scrabble, Backgammon, Chess, Monopoly, Cards etc provided.

Garbage Garbage is deposited in the big steel containers that you see on the

road-side. Recycling has not really hit Montenegro yet, but in the

Towns you will see the occasional ‘plastics’ bin.

There is no provision for garbage separation in the village. This is

apparently due to the lack of space in which to put the bins. Some

separation of garbage was noted in Njivice

Grapes A grape vine surrounds the terrace. We would be grateful if you would

train the vine through the terrace railings during your stay.

The grapes are actually black grapes; please feel free to eat them if you

are there when they are ripe. September/October.

Hair dryer Provided - sited in the upstairs sitting room cupboard

Heating A fan heater is provided along with two oil-filled type stand-alone

heaters. Please plug heaters directly into the wall sockets and avoid

using extension cables. (See extension cables)

The two air-conditioning units also serve as heaters.

Hotel The ‘Riviera Hotel’ is at the end of the road past the shop. This was a

‘Soviet’ hotel when it was a ’you-will-take-your-holiday-here-and-like-

it’ type place. It has since been bought and work has commenced on

refurbishment.

Sept 2010 Update

The Hotel is now open and up & running. Locals report the restaurant

to be good. The Beach Bar is reported to serve lunch time snacks.

We tried the pool bar (Red Bar) which is very pleasant. Drinks are

expensive, but that is only to be expected.

A ferry service runs between the hotel and Herceg Novi, ferry times in

Sept ’10 as follows:-

Njivice Herceg Novi Igalo

1000 1015 1030

1300 1315 1330

1600 1615 1630

1900 1915 1930

All times are FROM the above places.

NOTE: Unreliable times, you must check at the Hotel Reception.

May 2012 update

We went along for a drink on our visit in May, bar closed, restaurant

closed, ferry closed – shades of the Marie Celeste with not a soul in

sight. Maybe ‘in season’ things will start !

Sept 2013 update

Quite a surprise to find the hotel actually quite busy on a Saturday

lunchtime. We took the evening ferry (EUR 2.00/person) across to

Herceg Novi for dinner and then a taxi back (EUR 10.00).

2017 update – hotel is sold and new owner will open it in season 2018

Reports from our 2020 Guests are invited.

Internet Provided.

Wi Fi connection details in Njivice no 11

User name: BARKER

Password: Patrick2019

Otherwise:

Known ‘hotspot’ – At the Main Square a free hotspot has opened (Sept

’09). We tried this whilst having a pizza at one of the restaurants at this

square. Good, fast connection noted.

May ’10 – Free wireless coverage now exists over most of Herceg Novi.

Unfortunately, this does not reach to Njivice.

May ’12 - Extensive coverage now over Herceg Novi. Most restaurants

/ areas have a free hotspot.

Sept ’13 – Mobile internet now available. A SIM card for 15 days costs

EUR 9.95 and are sold at the local shop and at the ‘Voli’ Hypermarket.

You may need a USB adaptor.

June 2017 update – The property is now supplied with internet,

unfortunately NOT high-speed. The access code is on the router.

March 2019 – Now connected with above password.

Insect Repellent Electric type provided which need refills. One is sited in the upstairs

bedroom (behind the bed); refill with the Raid ‘Night & Day’, another is

sited in the dining room; refill with the Raid bottle. Refills may be found

in the right hand drawer of the small table in the dining room along

with spare electric units.

If you do use them, we ask that your replace the refills. Available from

the village shop or from the Voli Hypermarket.

Although the house and patio does not suffer too badly from insects;

mosquitoes and others are around and we suggest that you bring

repellent with you.

Iron Sited in the upstairs sitting room cupboard together with the ironing

board.

K

Kitchen Please do NOT cut items directly on the kitchen work-top.

Unfortunately it is not resistant to knives, please use the chopping

board provided.

If you use the cooker, please wait for the rings to cool before closing

the cooker top.

L

Lime Trees The lime trees at the rear of the house are our own. If you are here at

the right time (May), then please feel free to enjoy fresh lime in your

G&T.

Linen All linen and towels (except beach towels) are provided for up to 6

people.

Linen is changed once a week as part of the agency service.

Spare linen is sited in the upstairs sitting room cupboard, but you may

also find additional linen has been put in the bedroom cupboards.

Light bulbs Spare light bulbs are kept in the hall cupboard. To replace a bulb in the

ceiling lights, you need to identify which of the three ‘clasps’ is spring-

loaded. Carefully pull this out and remove the glass.

Loos Downstairs loo – the ‘flush’ may need a second, very slight, pull – for

some reason the water may keep running after the initial pull, in which

case the second slight pull will stop this.

Page 15: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

Market - food Behind the main square in Herceg Novi

Market – things Take the main road as if going to Kotor. As you leave Herceg Novi, going

down the hill, there are two ‘markets’ on the left where you can find

almost anything – worth a drop in but beware, most of the items have

a constructive self-destruct time of about 1 day – rather like the Okov

shop in Zelenika

N

Neighbours Our immediate neighbours, on the other side of the steps, are

delightful and speak some English. Her name is Slavica – pronounced

Slavitsa, and they are key-holders.

Page 16: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

P

Parking This can be a problem in Njivice. Basically, if a space is not ‘chained off’

then you can park in it. Out of high season, parking is not a problem,

but in high season parking can be difficult.

Yellow lines have recently been painted in the village, on one side only,

quite what that achieves we can only wonder.

2013 update – we have managed to acquire secure lock-up parking,

sufficient for two cars, in an apartment block close to the house. The

‘key’ is of the electronic type which will either be left in the house, or

with Montenegro Living.

2017 update – If the ‘electronic key’ does not work, the door can be

opened manually with a small key which is on the set of house keys.

2019 update – New doors have been fitted with remotes.

The spaces are immediately to the right on entering this garage and

extend from the garage wall to the ‘pillar’ forming a rectangle. Njivice

11 is painted on the floor.

Please be careful of the metal posts forming the entrance drive, they

are small and difficult to see from a car.

View of our secure parking entrance – point the device at the light fitting.

Page 17: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

17

Parking – Town Parking in Herceg Novi is charged. There are no ‘parking meters’ – but

basically the town is split into 2 ‘zones’, red and yellow. You can either

pay for parking via SMS messaging using the numbers on the parking

signs or you can buy ‘parking tickets’ at any kiosk which you must then

mark appropriately and display.

We tend to buy say 6 at a time (0.70 EUR / 0.50 EUR per hour depending

on zone) to save having to find a kiosk every time we want to park.

Parking charge can be paid over SMS messages – 14511 for red zone,

14512 for yellow zone (2017)

You have 30 minutes grace after parking to find a kiosk and display a

ticket.

Attendants do check the tickets, and will issue parking fines; we have

also heard that your car will be towed if a ticket is not displayed after

some time.

Power Adapters UK power adapters are provided. 3 pieces are kept in the third kitchen

drawer.

Power Failure In the case of a power failure – candles are provided, located in the Hall

cupboard.

Police When this country was part of Yugoslavia, it is said that 1 in 6 people

was a policeman. It sometimes still feels that way.

The chances are that you will be stopped when driving at least once in

a two-week stay. It does not mean that you have done anything wrong

– once they see you have a hire-car they will (hopefully) wave you on.

Otherwise they are checking papers.

The Police have discovered ‘Breathalysers’; and have become rather

fond of them. Beware.

BAC Limit is 0.05% for both Montenegro and Croatia. For comparison,

the UK & USA is 0.08%, whilst most of Europe is 0.05%.

Page 18: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

Public Holidays On of the biggest is May 21st – Independence Day – It is apparently

illegal to work on this day and consequently you will find that nearly

everything is closed (except restaurants). If this day falls near the

weekend then this turns into a major holiday.

Page 19: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

R

Restaurants Many available in the towns. In Hercig Novi try:-

Feral – One of the best – near the Marina – good menu with

English subtitles – try the mussels.

A new restaurant – Tri Lipe - has opened (May 2010) near to the

Feral – face the Feral, turn right and then left up the hill, the

place is just on the right. Good menu.

Raffaelo – On the water front on a promontory jutting into the

sea – probable the most expensive and the best for fish.

However, the have a ‘band’ singing local ballads which then go

table hopping for money.

Pizza Places – Forte on Topla – the best pizza in town. In the

same building where is Montenegro Living office – Galerija and

pizzeria Forte just below

Bistro Portofino - In the ‘second’ main square – from the ‘main

square’ walk up the steps under the clock and go diagonally

right across the square, look inside the church on your way –

the local priest appears every evening at 1800, rings the bell

madly for a few minutes and then disappears.

This bar is owned by a man that speaks good English – steak,

salads on the menu. A few of the expats often meet there for a

drink.

Buffet Beograd– a new restaurant (May 2012) at the start of the

cobbled pedestrian only street to the main square. It also has

an upstairs seating area with good views over the bay. Good

food & service.

Gradska kafana – located in the centre square, just after Boka

park. Best view from the terrace. Good food and big choice of

wines.

Hotel Restaurants – many of the hotels have a restaurant

attached on the seafront – we always feel ripped-off when we

try these, but go for a busy one.

Page 20: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

20

Village of Rose – on the opposite side of the bay – good

waterside restaurant – a boat service runs from the Herceg Novi

Marina to Rose. Details of times are posted on the marina wall

and change as the season progresses.

There is a sign for a restaurant on the approach road to Njivice

off to the right. It is said to be one of the best restaurants

around, however we have never actually found it despite a few

attempts. The road is worth a drive anyway just for the views

from the top (if you can manage this road then you will find the

one to Lovcen easy)

The village shopkeeper in Njivice also operates the next-door

restaurant.

Opens June 1st through to end of Sept, depending on the tourist

footfall. Excellent food. The waiter is obviously trained in silver

service. Having eaten there a number of times, we can highly

recommend this restaurant.

Booking is essential, as the Hotel Guests tend also to discover

this place – which is far superior to their own restaurant.

Booking may be done at the Shop.

Page 21: NJIVICE 11 Instructions & Notesnjivice11.com/uploads/1/1/9/5/119577653/njivice_11... · 2020-01-02 · 2 NJIVICE 11 Updated 2019/2020 Vital Instructions Important – you MUST do

S

Shop A small village shop is nearby. At the top of the steps, turn left and the

shop is a short distance down the road. The owner (Dragen) speaks

excellent English. Cold meats, cheeses, vegetables, fruit, milk, bread,

beer, wine, soap etc etc are all sold.

Open to 2100 hours every day, including Sunday. (Season only)

On our arrival May 2010, a Sunday, much to our surprise the shop was

closed. Opening times posted as Monday – Saturday 0800 to 1300 and

1600 to 2000. Sunday – 0800 to 1200.

He says that he will adjust these times to suit the season.

We suggest, if you are arriving on the Sunday flight, that you either take

sandwiches and drink with you in your luggage, or arrange with

Montenegro Living for a ‘Welcome Hamper’.

Another alternative is to ask the person meeting you at the airport to

deviate via the big red hypermarket near to Njivice. He is happy to do

this and will wait whilst you stock up on the basics.

Smoke Detectors Installed May 2012, one upstairs and one downstairs. Battery operated

with a life-span of 5 years. These are not interconnected, but are UK

approved. If you feel the need to ‘test’ them, then press the button on

each detector.

Batteries renewed May 2018.

Supermarkets Two in town, and a bigger one just outside Hercig Novi on the Kotor

Water The mains water valve is sited under the metal cover by the lime trees

at the rear of the house.

The water may be off when you arrive. To turn on, lift the metal cover

and open the green valve - gently.

Please turn the water off when you depart.

The mains water is drinkable, however most people use bottled water

for drinking.

Hot water – the water heater is sited in the downstairs shower room.

To turn on, twist the knob placed underneath the water heater about

three-quarters anti-clockwise. A red indicator light will come on. The

heater may be left on throughout your stay. Please turn off on your

departure.

The mains water for this area is piped from Croatia, Dubrovnik region,

and consequently they may be the occasional water shortage. This is

most likely to occur in May, when the pipeline is cleaned.

In the unlikely event that a major water shortage is foreseen,

Montenegro Living will, hopefully, advise you of this, and a 125 litre

plastic container (kept in the basement) may be sited in the downstairs

bathroom and filled ready for use. We would stress that severe water

shortages are most unlikely – once in nine years for us – and the above

is ‘just in case’.

Washing Machine An automatic washing machine is sited in the basement. The most

common programme is selected by turning the knob ‘P’ clockwise to

the number ‘4’. This selects a standard wash with full rinse and spin.

The water tap to this machine will probably be off when you arrive. This

is located next to the machine above the sink. Please turn the water off

and unplug the washing machine when you depart.
