Proxy Cache Technologies

• Standard Proxy– Requires browser configuration

• Transparent Proxy– Packets are “stolen” from normal routing path– Workstations or custom hardware

NLANR - Squid Cache

• NLANR Cache Hierarchy– deployed world wide, there may already be NLANR

connected Caches on STAR TAP Nets– a cache will be deployed at STAR TAP

• Squid Cache– Squid Software is free– Requires high-end PC < $5K– runs on Free BSD

Possible Configurations

• One or more “parent” caches at Gigapop, each institution with own cache.

• Multiple caches boxes at Gigapop, no institution caches

• No parent cache at Gigapop, institution caches peer with each other.
