The Hottest Life Science Clusters in the Nordic region
■ Almost 40,000 people work in the Swedish life science sector.
■ Sweden invests most money per capita in Europe in life science research.
■ AstraZeneca, Medivir, Orexo, Sobi, Elekta and Sectra are examples of companies that were founded and developed in Sweden.
■ In addition to these, there are around 800 life science companies in the country.
■ With 45,000 employees in over 300 companies, Denmark is an international player to be reckoned with.
■ In 2013 Denmark ranked number one in Europe and second in the world after the US in The Worldview Report and Bio-Innovation Scorecard.
■ Companies include Novo Nordisk, Lundbeck, Leo Pharma, Coloplast and Novozymes.
■ Iceland has a unique register of medical and genetic data on large sections of the population.
■ Research projects usually achieve 70–90% voluntary participation in Iceland.
■ Companies include Decode Genetics, a global leader in analysing and understanding the human genome for the development of therapies.
■ The Oslo Cancer Cluster has led to Norway becoming established on the international stage.
■ The cluster brings together 70 members from academic institutions and industry in Norway and Northern Europe and covers the entire value chain for the development of new cancer therapies. Companies such as Algeta (purchased by Bayer) and Vaccibody were created from this cluster.
■ In addition to the focus on cancer, Norway has a thriving medtech industry with over 200 companies.
■ Finland has around 200 companies collaborating closely with its 15 universities that are active in the field of life science.
■ Orion Pharma, Biotie Therapies and Oncos Therapeutics are some of the country’s companies in this area.
