WHO:• Elderly afflicted with ischaemic heart disease

• Working, busy middle-aged people with ischaemic heart disease

WHY:• According to statistics, Cardiovascular Disease one of the top causes of deaths in Singapore.

• Of these deaths, Ischaemic Heart Disease accounts for the majority.

Problem Statement:

Activities

User

suffers

relapse

Example:

Heart attack

Patient is unable to

obtain the correct

medication

Patient collapses or

finally manages to

consume to correct

medication after a

period of time

Page 7: Nm2216 DW6-03 Presentation

• INSIGHTS:

• Might take wrong medication

• Might not be able to find medication in time

• Nobody might be around to help

Problem Statement:

Activities

Which can possibly be LIFE THREATENING

Page 8: Nm2216 DW6-03 Presentation

Problem Statement: Context

ELDERLY LIVING ALONE:

• Rapidly ageing population– More strain on healthcare and care-relief

resources

• Elderly living alone despite being physically disabled / ill

• Sharp rise in the number of elderly living alone since 2000

– Cause for concern: many elderly living alone die alone

• Lifestyle makes it difficult for family to be around to care of them

– Family and volunteers cannot be around all the time

• Elderly may forget to take medication / confuse medication

– Life threatening

WORKING, BUSY MIDDLE-AGED PEOPLE:

• Singapore has a high number of middle-aged working adults

• Working adults clock, on average, more than 40 working hours per week, which is higher than global average

• Tendency to neglect one’s own health

• Unfounded belief that one is fit and healthy until confirmation from doctor

• Not many working adults go for medical check up on a regular basis

Page 9: Nm2216 DW6-03 Presentation

Proposed SolutionProposed Solution

• A Wristband device which contains:

- Microchips (Data, Telecommunication Purposes)

• - Telecommunication capabilities to send notifications to hospital, volunteers, and family members

• - Sensors to monitor patient’s vital signs

- A vibrating alert

•- Backlit lights to indicate user’s condition.

- clear LED screen which provides visual summary and notifications

Page 10: Nm2216 DW6-03 Presentation

• A compact, rectangular Pill Dispenser which is:

- compartmentalized and color- coded

- has a vibration to alert user where it is

- Simple electronics to communicate with Wristband

- LEDs / Lights which light up on appropriate compartments for easy identification

- Waterproof

Proposed SolutionProposed Solution

Proposed SolutionStrengths of Solution

• Positive Transfer effect for cognitive abilities

• Good market in countries which have rapidly aging

population

• The care-relief eases the hectic life of a working

individual.

• Improves the reaction time for hospitals to dispatch an

ambulance.

• Caregivers of our target audience will be much relieved

as well while receiving timely updates and alerts in any

circumstance.

Page 12: Nm2216 DW6-03 Presentation

• Saving more lives in more ways than one:

Survivability

Ease on Hospital facilities and manpower.

(Reduced costs)

• Increased independence/mobility.

• Users and families will have a better

peace of mind.

Proposed SolutionStrengths of Solution

Page 13: Nm2216 DW6-03 Presentation

Criticism of Solution

• Will the users want to wear a monitoring

device 24/7, despite its obvious benefits?

(Fear of technology, inconvenience, social

stigma, etc)

• Is this device cost sustainable?

• What forms of specialized manpower will

be required to monitor patient’s conditions

through hospital computers?
