Problems with current methods of evaluation

•Visitor count- Only measures how popular a particular exhibition/museum is- Doesn’t measure how social or participatory the exhibition/museum is

Page 3: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Proposed Methods of Measure

•Trace visitor’s path•Track how long a visitor is at a particular

exhibit•Track hot areas (areas that have a lot of

visitors crowding at)•Track if there are a group of visitors at a

specific exhibit•Provide opportunity for visitors to rate an

exhibit

Page 4: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Rationale

Page 5: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Trace visitor’s path

•Could provide evaluators with information such as understanding the visitor’s behaviour

Page 6: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Track how long a visitor is at a particular exhibit•Could provide evaluators with information

such as the exhibit is more eye-catching; the exhibit is more participative, etc.

Page 7: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Track hot areas (areas that have a lot of visitors crowded)•May give an idea on how popular a

particular area is•An indication that the area may be more

socially conducive

Page 8: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Track if there a group of visitors at a specific exhibit•Could tell evaluators that a certain exhibit

attracts more social interaction

Page 9: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Provide opportunity for visitors to rate an exhibit•Give evaluators information on how the

visitors feel about the social and participativeness of an exhibit

Choice of museumCleveland Museum of Art

Page 11: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Cleveland Museum of Art• Nicely partitioned rooms for different themes• Has a highly interactive gallery at Gallery One

Page 12: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Proposed Product•A touch-screen watch that uses Indoor

Positioning System (IPS) to track the visitors’ movement and allows them to rate exhibits.

Page 13: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

How it works?•Beacons will be placed throughout each

floor to map out a general layout of the entire museum.

•At the backend, the system can customise the area that determines each exhibit (example in next slide)

•Each watch is a unique “tag” and the system will be able to pinpoint the position of the watch very accurately.

How it works?

Page 15: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

What a visitor does with the watch•The watch default display is the map of

the current level and the exact position of where the visitor is currently at

•Upon reaching an exhibit area, the watch’s display will show which exhibit the visitor is currently at and a “Rate” button will also appear

•Tapping the “Rate” button will change the display to the rating system display

Page 16: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

What a visitor does with the watch•Example of the rating system

•Two questions: “Please rate how interactive is the exhibit”; “Please rate if exhibit provides opportunity for social interaction”

Page 17: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

What a visitor does with the watch•Also in the map display, rooms that

visitors has entered before will be shaded in a different colour

Page 18: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

So how do evaluators and visitors benefit?

Page 19: Nm4226 evaluation project presentation

Visitors • A map guide• Ability to rate exhibits• Upon returning the watch, the

visitor’s path will be recorded and the visitor will be provided with a unique code on the spot

• With the code, the visitor can enter this code on the museum’s website to retrieve their visitor path

• The visitor can also return to the museum with this code and the watch will be pre-programmed with the visitor’s data

Evaluators • Understand visitors’ behaviour

by consolidating data of visitors’ path

• Better understanding of an exhibit’s engagement with visitors by measuring the time spent on each exhibit

• Check if a certain exhibit encourages more social interaction through checking crowd activity

• Check if a certain area attracts more social interaction

• Gain feedback from visitors on exhibits
