MY PRODUCT My product is a music magazine for 16 – 24 year

olds. The genre of music is indie music. I designed it to appeal to teenagers and young

adults who listen to indie style music. The purpose of the magazine is to update my target

audience with the latest bands and artists in the type of music they like.

This is one of the reasons that I chose ‘Revolution’ as the name of my magazine as it shows people the newest and revolutionary music that is coming out at the moment.

It keeps people up to date and shows them who are going to be the next biggest stars as well.

MY PRODUCT The house style of the magazine is black, white and

red. These colours go well together and can be seen as rebellious colours with the black and red clash.

This fits well with my audience as teenagers and young adults can be seen as more rebellious and breaking the rules.

Another purpose of the magazine is to give people and inside look on the music scene and let the fans get to know the artists.

This is why we have the interview with one of the newest bands around and reviews on gigs which are appropriate for our audience.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTIONS?

My product has inspirations from professional magazines and media products.

The layout is based on professional magazines that we researched and analysed in our preliminary stages. Most real magazines have similar features to what my magazine consists of.

There are a few unique ones as well such as giving an amateur bands a chance to have a page of fame in every issue.

HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUP? The style of my magazine shows that it is for 16 – 24

year olds who are interested in indie music. There are a lot of connotations for this audience.

These are things such as rebellious, breaking the rules, stylish, etc.

If the theme of the magazine was too nice and clean, it would not appeal to my target audience. So I had to make sure it had a more edgy look to it.

One of my ways of achieving this was my masthead. It is in an adventurous and youthful font and is attractive to my readers.

WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION WOULD DISTRIBUTE YOUR PRODUCT? The main distributors of my product would be

news agents and supermarkets This is because a large number of my target

audience shop in news agents and supermarkets and it means that my magazine is accessible to most people.

Another good place to sell my product would be online as a lot of teenagers and young adults spend time on the internet and I could advertise on social networking sites such as Facebook.

I would get someone like RhineGold publishing to publish my magazine as they specialise in musical arts so would know how to market my product

WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE OF YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT? The audience of my magazine is people

aged 16 – 24 who are interested in indie style music.

The connotations with this age helped me design my product as I knew the design had to be more edgy and rebellious than that of an older or younger audience.

HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE? To get my target audience’s attention I

designed my magazine in a style that would appeal to teenagers and young adults who want a magazine that updates them on their favourite music.

If I worded it like this my audience would not be inspired to buy the magazine so the font of my title and the way it’s laid out is to attract this type of person

I used colours and a house style that I thought would appeal to them

FEEDBACK FROM MY TARGET AUDIENCE I asked someone aged 17 who had

looked at my product what they thought and their reply was:

“I thought that it’s a good magazine because it appeals well to teenagers and gives good information about indie music, it’s not my favourite type of music but it still was alright to read.”

Most people said they liked the style of my magazine.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?

My skills in using macromedia fireworks have improved over the process of making and designing my magazine

Also I hadn’t done much work with camera’s before but I learnt how to take better shots and how to use them more effectively on my product

My masthead took some time to make but I got all the colours done on Fireworks

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?

I have learnt how to address a target audience more appropriately and how to make my product appeal to them effectively

My magazine also has more professional contents and features

The ideas I used in the final product were chosen more wisely instead of rushing into decisions like I did in the preliminary task

FINAL EVALUATION Good points: The style of my product suits the target

audience I like the profile pictures for the band Bad points: Not planned well enough Cover and contents a bit plain Overall I think my product achieves

what it’s meant to do and fits it’s purpose
