A car heading from Marapong to Onverwacht was hit by a train in the early hours of Monday morning. According to police reports the driver of the car spotted a police road block and turned his vehicle around. A truck was waiting at the railway crossing for the train to pass when the vehicle overtook the truck and collided with the passing train. The driver allegedly fled the scene before police arrived and it is not known if there were any passengers with him in the car. A case of negligent driving is being investigated.

While the South African Post Office’s (SAPO) ongoing strike had a huge impact on its operations, it is pleas-ing to notice some signs of recovery.

SAPO has reported in a recent media statement that there has been a substantial improvement in staff attendance, which they say is com-mendable progress.

More employees have been re-porting for duty and trucks full of mail left the mail centre to different deli-very points.

Despite many post offices in the country being closed for repairs after damages were caused by striking workers, all post offices in Limpopo are open for business. Mail messengers have also been spotted in Mokopane.

Negotiations with SAPO’s labour partners are on-going and the country is hoping for business to resume as normal within this week.

Northern News visited a sewage plant in Mokopane on Monday after an unbearable stench for a considerable time raised ques-tions in Chroompark.

Disturbing proof was found at a sewage plant, South-West of town right next to the Nyl river on Monday. Raw sewage is vis-ibly flowing from the plant, directly into the Nyl river. The Nyl, which becomes the Mogalakwena further North is an important water source for the villages to the North-West of Mokopane. People use the water to irri-

“We deliver, whatever it takes” - SAPO

Mail delivery is still expected to be incon-sistent though. This is due to a shortage of staff.

SAPO apologised to its customers for the delay.

A rare sight: A post officce mail messenger has been spotted in Mokopane’s residential area recently.

Sewage overflow raises concern gate their crops and for their cattle. Northern News contacted the Mogalakwena Munici-pality for comment on this matter but did not received any response before going to print on Wednesday.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo is calling for an intensive investigation into al-legations of negligence that led to the death of a 62-year-old Mokopane resident who died at Polokwane Hospital on Monday.

According reports, the patient was admit-ted at the Mokopane Hospital for a month waiting to be transferred to Polokwane on 3 November. However, the press release stated that it did not happen. The man’s transfer was apparently re-scheduled.

He was to be transported by patient planned transport on 10 November, but the transport did not show up and only became available last Friday after the DA had written a letter requesting the Health HOD to inter-vene.

Mokopane resident dies after health care was deniedIt is further alleged by the DA that the

patient who suffered from Gangerene did not receive treatment at the Mokopane Hospital as he waited to be transported to Polokwane where treatment awaited him.

The DA condemns the negligence that unfolded in this case and strongly calls for answers as it appears that the death of the patient could have been avoided had all par-ties involved played their part.

It is unacceptable that public hospitals execute its constitutional obligations upon intervention 20 years into democracy.

The HOD must leave no stone unturned in ensuring that all parties are held accoun-table, the DA’s Langa Bodlane (MPL) said in the statement.

Power outages plannedAccording to the Mogalakwena Municipa-lity, maintenance on a substation will be the cause for power outages in parts of Moko-pane on 30 November from 12:00-20:00.

The electricity will be out in the following areas: Chroompark, Nylpark, Kameeldoring Park, the Old Industrial Area on the Zebediela road and farming consumers (Doorndraai, Baviaanskloof, Vlakte, Constantia, Haakdor-ing, Bokpoort, Rooiwal, Lisbon and the golf course). The municipality warns that no guarantee can be given that the electricity will remain disconnected for the whole period and consumers are urged to consider all con-nections as live at all times.

Boy (17) stabbed A 17-year-old teenager was stabbed shortly after having an argument about the length of his shower.

The incident occurred on a farm outside Lephalale. The boy was scolded by his older brother (19) because he was taking too long to finish his shower. The boy was stabbed with a knife in the left side of his chest out-side his home. The boy’s body was found by his mother the following morning.

A19-year-old man has been arrested on charges of murder and appeared in the Lep-halale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The case was postponed pending further investi-gation.

Preparations have begun for a resumption of site work for the construction of the initial production shaft as part of the first phase of develop-ment of the planned under-ground mine at Ivanhoe’s R17-billion Platreef Project outside Mokopane.

“For a long time now, the development of our Platreef Project has been a destiny waiting to be fulfilled. It is said that great mines are ‘made’, as much as they are ‘found’. Now, thanks to the sup-port of our partners – including the black economic empowerment (BEE) beneficiaries representing the 20 eligible Mokopane area communities, our eligible employees and SA entrepreneurs, plus our Japanese inves-tors – Ivanhoe’s Platreef team is ready to begin building another great mine,” executive chairman Robert Friedland said.

“The tremendous size and remarkable thickness of the Flatreef deposit is continuing to be revealed as a game-changing develop-ment for the platinum industry in SA. It also is a company-maker for Platreef Resources. Although recently renamed Ivanplats, the company preserves its singular, 26-year quest firstly to discover the mineral trove and now to develop the Platreef Project.

Dr. Patricia Makhesha, who became MD of the Platreef Project subsidiary, Ivanplats, last August, is a former transformation ex-ecutive in SA industry who spent more than a year as an Ivanhoe consultant working cooperatively with Mokopane area com-munities and helping to develop Platreef’s BBEEE-structure.

Bill Hayden, founder of Platreef Resourc-es, remains a director of Ivanhoe Mines and the chief geologist and discovery field leader, David Broughton, continues to head the company’s exploration efforts.

In Mokopane, the contractors are mar-shalling workers and equipment. The job of actually building the Platreef mine is about to get underway. Formal notifications of a return to work have been provided to provincial authorities and landowners in ac-cordance with established requirements. In a coordinated ramp-up of preparations, plant and earth moving equipment is being moved back on to the site of Platreef’s first planned shaft.

“We are committed to resuming site work as soon as is practically possible,” said CEO Lars-Eric Johansson.

He said that a principal priority continues to be the completion of the excavation at the box-cut to establish access for the construc-

tion of the large concrete surface collar for Shaft #1. The collar also will serve as a base that will anchor the head frame structure and house the ventilation opening. Work on the shaft and related mining-plant compo-nents will take place within the 20-hectare, fenced construction compound. Work also is proceeding on primary components for Shaft #2, the 10m-diameter main production shaft. Murray & Roberts Cementation has be-gun the design and engineering of headgear and early works are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2015.

The mine is projected to require a work-force of about 2 200 within four years of the start of production operations.

Ivanhoe will invest a total of R160-million in the Platreef social and labour plan during the next five years. The plan includes R67.2-million for the development of job skills among local residents and R87.7-million for local economic development projects.

The Platreef Project has committed to building a R26-million community skills development and training facility in the Mo-kopane area within five years as part of Ivan-hoe’s objective of helping to establish a roster of qualified, local candidates for jobs at the mine and its associated minerals processing plant. In addition, Platreef plans to launch five local economic development projects un-der the social and labour plan that will result in the creation of at least 820 jobs, including 660 positions that will be open to unskilled or semi-skilled candidates.

As part of an approved environmental management plan covering Platreef’s devel-opment and operational life, the project will comply with strict conditions for the conser-vation of the natural environment, including biodiversity, and the protection of surface water and groundwater resources.

A 37-year-old man drowned in the Mogalakwena river after apparently falling over the side of his boat.

The man, identified as Ignatius Mushai, was fishing at the time and was not wearing a life jack-et. The police called in diving units from Polokwane and Modimolle to search for the man's body. It was found shortly after.

Mushai is originally from Zimbabwe, but had been living in SA for nine years. The Mahwelereng police warns that it is illegal to fish the river using home-made nets. Fishing rods are allowed and life jackets should be worn on boats.

Mushai's family thanked the Mahwelereng police for their assistance.

Police warns against con-artistsThe community should take note of the la-test fraudulent ways that criminals use to get innocent people to part with their mon-ey, says Lephalale police spokesperson warrant officer Frans Mokoena.

Fraudsters phone random victims and tell them that they can help them land big contracts at various companies. They then request the victims to deposit money into a bank account.

Once the money is deposited, the culprits disappear with the money, never to be heard from again.

Two of these cases were reported at the Lephalale police station in the past week.

“Please be cautious and make sure the person on the phone is who they really say they are,” says Mokoena.

* In a separate scam, fraudsters phone victims informing them that they've won a cash prize via the lottery. All they need to do is purchase air time as an 'administration fee'. The victim then buys and transfers the airtime. The fraudster then disappears.

** In another scam, fraudsters contact business and claim to have paid over a huge amount of money into their bank account. Usually the reference is not unknown to the business. They ask the business to refund them. The next day the cheque paid into the business account is returned and the money disappears as it was never a valid payment.

“Ek en my aller-verbaaste staan nog so

Laptops for local medical studentsThe five students chosen to represent Lephalale as part of the Fidel Cas-tro-Nelson Mandela Medical Scholarship programme were given laptops on 14 November ahead of their departure for Cuba. Nine laptops were sponsored by Eskom as part of the Medupi Corporate Social Involvement programme. The remaining four laptops will be handed over to students from Lephalale who are already studying in Cuba.

Sarah Maxwell, Medupi CSI manager thanked the municipality for in-volving them in the project. On behalf of the department of health, Cllr M E Dinale wished the students well and encouraged them to stay focused on their studies. Acting Mayor, Cllr W M Motlokwa thanked stakeholders Eskom, Exxaro and the Department of Health for assisting the municipal-ity in this endeavour.

Mpho Ratsoma, Thapelo Motadi, Violet Masekoameng, Mary Motebele and James Sefufula are all local residents who recently graduated from schools such as Molautsi Secondary School, Mananye High School and

Letupu High School. They will join 106 Limpopo learners who will soon depart for Cuba for the next two-and-a-half-years, where after they will return home for a short break. They will then go back to

Cuba for another two-and-a-half years before returning to SA to complete a two-year residency programme. This collaboration with Cuba forms part of the government’s drive to address the shortage of medical doctors in SA, particularly in rural areas.
