For decades, each April the industry's professional magazineshave descended on the NAB convention to seek out the bestnew offerings on the floor and award them prizes. These arethe products that create the greatest sensation among theirreaders. The products are judged and the prizes awarded ina completely objective, transparent manner, either byindependent juries made up of prestigious industryprofessionals or by popular vote. At this year's NAB show, AEQ presented its DR-100 digitalrecorder and was rewarded with an avalanche of prizes - nofewer than three! The product has been designed to fill an important niche inthe market for a small, lightweight, professional device to beused by a reporter for recording highquality audio material while out thestudio. Once the audio has beenrecorded, the reporter can usethe same equipment to editthe material on the spotand transfer it to thestation in audioformat, via a cellphone, or as anaudio file viaa modemor overtheInternetfrom acomputer. For furtherinformation, visitour website atwww.aeq.es/eng/pr_dr100.htm; for information in Spanish,go to www.aeq.es/spn/pr_dr100.htm.

UPDATED SYSTEL 6000 INCORPORATES USER SUGGESTIONSThe AEQ Systel 6000 is the only solution of its kind in theworld. It is not just a simple tool for talk shows ormultiplexing consoles. It handles radio or television stationcommunications in a comprehensive manner.

During nearly two years on the market the AEQ SYSTEL 6000has been adopted by many showcase stations. Some highlyexperienced users have provided us with many suggestionsfor adapting it to their operational needs. We have takenthese suggestions to heart and brought out a new Systel 6000, so flexible that it can be used without having tochange the working practices at any station. To find out more about the new Systel 6000, visit ourwebsite at www.aeq.es to check out the details and downloadthe manual. You can also request the DEMO software on CDor an on-site demonstration.

NEW TELEPHONE MODULE FOR AEQBC-500 CONSOLEThe AEQ BC 500 broadcast console now offers the option tohave a high performance digital telephone hybrid completewith multiplexing between two lines and frequency extension. The new BC 533 H MPX module incorporates these featuresso that it can be used in existing BC 500 consoles.

Conceptually, while switching matrixes can be very easilycontrolled from applications installed on computers vianetworks, the use of dedicated panels offers more securityand peace of mind.

This is why the first users of the BC 2000 D matrix, HeilongJiang Provincial Radio in northern China, wanted the systemconfigured and maintained by computer, but made sure theirsystem included dedicated panels to perform every-dayswitching operations. With this in mind, the NCB-100 panel,

which is connected directly to the BC 2000 D's privateethernet network, was added to the BC 2000 D family ofproducts.

It has 12 programmable keys, a large display, a scroll knobwith a pushbutton activating function, 4 dual-function keysand typically TAKE and BREAK keys. The panel alsoincorporates 3 GPIs and 3 GPOs, which enables remoteaccess or operation.

It can execute individual or grouped connections anddisconnections, salvos and macros, protect or unprotect lines, and even tells the user the exact time. Its flexibility lets youprogram it especially to cover particular needs that may arisein any location.

Model of the future AEQ building in the Legatec science and technology park.

AEQ adapts the Real Time Controlsoftware for the Course multicodec toESPN’s needs

ESPN is an active AEQ customer using the fullarray of AEQ ISDN codecs, including the Course

(a multicodec capable of handling up to 10 audio codecs in a4U rack chassis), the Eagle (the popular 1U audio codec) andthe Swing (our portable ISDN codec with a built in telephonehybrid and mixer). All these products belong to the E@sy family. The E@sy remote control consists of an application software RealTime Control (RTC), and a direct connection through the E@sycommunications port. The RTC comes free with any of the AEQaudio codecs.

ESPN found the E@sy remote control capability in the AEQ audiocodecs very useful to control their multiple ISDN lines. Shortlyafter installing the AEQ audio codecs, the engineeringdepartment requested a simple modification in the RTC software. The request was to make the call termination a two-step processto avoid involuntary call hang-up. AEQ implemented this requestvery quickly. The second change requested by ESPN for the RTCsoftware consisted the addition of line labeling capability in thesoftware, this making the line identification easier for the operator.

Radio ismy life.I could not believe that eversince my first encounterwith radio, as a Citizen BandRadio Operator that my lovefor the field would havegrown this much. I am always enthusiastic about newtechnologies and equipment. Later, I became an amateur(Ham) radio operator [J88DF] because I felt it encouraged meto get more involved into the electronics and theory of radio. Then came live radio, my very first job after leaving high schoolwas a Technical Operator at the National BroadcastingCorporation, NBC Radio, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Ispent less than three years in that position and was latertransferred to the Program Departments as a New Reporter. The progression continued as I gained experience and furtherqualifications I was promoted to an Announcer/ Newscaster. When I left NBC Radio in 2004, I had served as the ProgramManager for just over two years. During my time as ProgramManager, I was part of a committee to select equipment forthe upgrade of the studio facilities. I had the pleasure ofreviewing products from most, if not all, of the major players inthe broadcast industry including AEQ Broadcast. At the time, Ihad no idea that I would eventually be part of the AEQ family.Yes, at AEQ we have exceeded the realm of being a team weare a family. Since October 2004 in my marketing/salesposition in AEQ, I interact daily with dealers, operationmanagers and engineers. My 13 years of experience in radiohas certainly made this new challenge an easier one. Now, inmy spare time I continue to research new and emergingtechnologies for radio and I have live fun on WAVS, an AMradio station in Davie, Florida.

in the best stationsThe BC-2000D console has been shipping since Autumn 2005 and the first users, from highly diversebackgrounds are finding out how well it adapts to their particular work methods.

The consoles leave the factory pre-configured for each client and during set-up they are further configured tothe way each station operates.

The reception these consoles have received is impressive, so in addition to the ones that have already beendelivered, there are many orders - ample reward for AEQ’s huge technical and financial commitment todigital audio consoles for radio and television.

The users have particularly mentioned its complete radio console functionality, its extensive processingcapabilities: equalization, dynamics, delay and others, the modular control panel with several pages ofmotorized faders, the flexible assignment of inputs and outputs on each fader and its integration with theswitching matrix of the central control room.

For its foreign satellitebroadcasting service ALL INDIA RADIO (AIR) buys 42 AEQ MPAC- 02portable codecs and 42 AEQ Eaglerackmounted codecs Via consulting firm WEBEL, AEQ and its local representative,Falcon Technologies, supplied these products for AIR's 42

regional facilities, so thateach facility can send andreceive, in high quality,

news of external events through full duplex Nera digitaltransponders. This deal was valued at around half a millionUS dollars. The AEQ MPAC 02 converts the audio at microphone or linelevel to a 64Kbps data stream sent to the portable Nerasatellite uplink. This is received, via satellite and then thedata stream is converted by the AEQ Eagle, codec intoanalogue and digital AES/EBU audio to the central controlroom. Return feeds are sent back to the remote site fordecoding by the MPAC-02.Using MPEG L2 coding, the audio bandwidth achieves 11KHz although when delays are more critical, G722 codingis used with a 7KHz bandwidth. Both bandwidths aresufficient for most of AIR's applications.

Installation of the router of RTM in Rabat

The heart of the system is an Impact 2x120x120-circuit digitalaudio routers, plus a 10-card Course codec, controlledthrough a network of nine workstations with the Impact+ andSystel 6000 applications.

The installationtraining and systemadjustment havebeen completed inRabat. It

facilitates mobile and temporary communications for the livebroadcast of outside events. Communications are managed through the Systel 6000application, operated from each of the control centers or fromthe MDC's control console. A new release will be installed, which will reflect the suggestions of hundreds of users whoover an extended period of beta testing the application (insome cases more than a year). This process has helped the

way the applicationdevelops. The studios areinterconnected witheach other and withthe transmissionfacilities through theImpact+ application, which makes itpossible to configurematrix views so thateach operator in astudio or at the MDC has available only those circuits he orshe needs to work with. Pre-programmed block switching(salvos) can also be done, or automatically at a pre-

programmedtime. As we go to press,Radio Televisionof Morocco (RTM)plans to expandand improve theirinfrastructure byadding furthercommunicationsterminals for theirSystel 6000 and

increasing the capacity offered by the AEQ Impact matrix tohandle analogue circuits through more Caddy converters andAEQ DA-16T analogue audio distribution amplifiers.

Community Radio in Guinea BissauAEQ has given a positive response to the request from theAssociação Guineense de Estudo e Divulgação deTecnologias Apropriadas (DIVUTEC), an NGO involved in thecreation of a community radio station in Guinea Bissau. Theobjective is to provide news and information services to thelocal population in the Boé area, where the natives of GuineaBissau declared their independence from Portugal in 1973.Although this is a small project, the country has, seriousinfrastructure problems and this will bring a great benefit tothe area. The system includes a 500W FM transmissionsystem including antenna, and a complete radio studioequipped with an AEQ BC-300 mixer, microphones, CDplayers, cassette recorders, monitors, etc., with workspace fora presenter and a guest.

News in BriefAEQ has equipped Botswana National Radio's foreigntransmission unit with Swing Codecs.SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) hasincreased its complement of Eagle codecs.
