Dear reader, Welcome to the new issue of Infosylva. In this issue, we cover inspiring initiatives from Africa. In Eritrea, active participation is being witnessed in community-based afforestation activities. Ghana has started the ACI Afforestation project, which is aimed at encouraging tree planting. EzyStove – a revolutionary Namibian/Swedish energy-efficient wood-burning stove – has scooped the international Red Dot Best of the Best 2012 design award. We are told, endlessly, that climate change will mean the end of the Amazon and of tropical forests, and the Earth will lose its lungs. It appears that this is not wholly and completely true... En Eritrea, la participación activa que se registra en las actividades de forestación a base comunitaria. EzyStove - una revolucionaria estufa (cocina) de leña de Namibia/Suecia (eficiente en energía), ha sido galardonada con el premio internacional Red Dot Best al mejor diseño de 2012. Se nos dice, sin cesar, que el cambio climático significará el final de la Amazonía, de los bosques tropicales, y la Tierra perderá sus pulmones. Parece que esto no es completamente cierto...

Disfrute de su lectura, Cher Lecteur, chère Lectrice, Bienvenue sur la nouvelle édition d’Infosylva. Dans ce numéro, nous aborderons certaines initiatives inspirantes développées en Afrique. En Erythrée, les communautés locales ont démontré une participation active aux projets de reboisement. Le Ghana a lancé son projet de boisement ACI qui vise à encourager la plantation d’arbres. EzyStove - le produit Namibien/ Suédois révolutionnaire consistant en une poêle a bois éco-énergétique - a remporté le prix international Red Dot du Meilleur design 2012. Enfin, on nous dit sans cesse que le changement climatique se traduira par la fin de l'Amazonie et des forêts tropicales, et que la Terre perdra alors ses poumons. FAO Forestry announcements FAOSTAT – Forestry Trade Flows Statistics for 2010 have just been released. Turning knowledge into action: sustainable forest management Sustainable forest management is one of FAO's focus areas where experience, expertise and knowledge

are shared to achieve results and impact on the ground. FAO promotes sustainable forest management by supporting Member Countries directly through field projects and by working at international level to address and help solve regional and global forest-related issues. Wangari Maathai Award 2012 The Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) has launched the first ever Wangari Maathai Award to honour and commemorate the impact of this extraordinary woman who championed forest issues around the world. The award in the amount of USD20,000 will be given in recognition of outstanding contributions made by an individual to preserve, restore and sustainably manage forests and to communicate the key role forests play in rural livelihoods and the environment across generations.

Anuncios del Departamento Forestal de la FAO Candidaturas abiertas para el Premio Wangari Maathai 2012 La Asociación de Colaboración en materia de Bosques (ACB) ha lanzado el Premio Wangari Maathai en honor y conmemoración de una extraordinaria mujer que defendió las cuestiones forestales en todo el mundo. El premio de USD $20,000 será otorgado a una persona que se haya distinguido por las contribuciones hechas para preservar, restaurar y manejar sustentablemente los bosques y comunicar el papel clave que desempeñan los bosques en las comunidades rurales y el ambiente a través de generaciones. Annonces du Département des Forêts de la FAO Nominations ouvertes pour le Prix Wangari Maathai 2012 Le Partenariat de collaboration sur les forêts (PCF) a lancé le Prix inaugural Wangari Maathai pour honorer et commémorer une femme extraordinaire qui a soutenu les questions forestières dans le monde entier. Une récompense de 20,000 USD sera accordée en reconnaissance de contributions exceptionnelles faites par une personne pour préserver, reconstituer et gérer durablement les forêts et pour communiquer le rôle clé que jouent les forêts pour les moyens d’existence dans les zones rurales et l'environnement à travers les générations. L’Organisation des Nations Unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture est un membre et a la Présidence du PCF, un consortium international de 14 organisations, secrétariats et institutions travaillant sur les questions forestières internationales. New publications from FAO Pulp and Paper Capacities 2011-2016 The annual FAO survey of world pulp and paper capacities is based on figures received from correspondents in many countries. A computer questionnaire was used in the enquiry, and the data were stored and processed by computer. The following are some features of the presentation: country tables for pulp and paper are presented on one page; grade tables show volume of production capacity by country, for each product and product aggregate code; and production tables by country.

Novedades editoriales de la FAO Capacidades de pasta y papel 2011-2016 La encuesta anual de la FAO sobre la capacidad mundial de producción de pasta y papel se basa en los datos recibidos de los corresponsales en muchos países. Los datos se han almacenado y elaborado con la ayuda de un ordenador, y en la encuesta se ha utilizado un cuestionario preparado igualmente con un ordenador. Cabe señalar las siguientes características de la presentación: los cuadros relativos a la pasta y papel por países se ofrecen en una página; los cuadros por productos indican el volumen de la capacidad de producción por países, en relación con cada producto y el código de la suma de productos; y los cuadros de producción por país.

Nouveaux livres de la FAO Capacités de la pâte et du papier 2011-2016 Le recensement annuel de la FAO sur les capacités mondiales de production de pâte et de papier se fond sur les chiffres envoyés par les correspondants de nombreux pays du monde. Les données ont été classées et traitées sur ordinateur, et on a utilisé un questionnaire informatisé. La présentation des données est caractérisée par les points suivants: les tableaux par pays pour la pâte et le papier sont présentés chacun sur une page; les tableaux par produit indiquent la capacité de production par pays, pour tous les produits et groupes de produits codés; et les tableaux de production par pays.
