The Columban Principal’s Message “God of all peoples in Jesus Christ

Dear Students, Staff, Family and Friends

Congratulations to Lucky! A Bronze Medal! What a race - Lucky performed really well in the 100 metres and came in 3rd after Maddison Elliott, also Australia in first place! What a feeling to stand on that dias and hear the music play. It certainly brought a tear to my eye and inspiration to my heart as I reflected on Lucky's journey to reach this point. An excited group of 35 Year 11 students and 10 staff left yesterday to attend the largest Indigenous Cultural Festival in Australia located in North East Arnhem Land. contribution and experience of Catholic Education. Another highlight was the presentation of the 2014 Spirit of Catholic Education Awards to 7 outstanding contributors to Catholic Education by the Hon. Premier Campbell Newman, MP. Thr Minister for Education , Training and Employment, Hon John Paul Langbroek also attended the ceremony. We congratulate Rebecca McGregor from St Peter's on being one of the Award winners! Debating - Both Year 12 Teams in the Final 16 of QDU - Outstanding Achievement of 2 out of 16! This is a wonderful tribute to our Debating levels in the College. Team 12.2 ( Team - Emily George, Ryan Rosenberg and Chau Le and thanks to Tim for timekeeping) had a close win last night against Iona College. Team 12.1 ( Hannah Grundy, John Paul Gonzo, Rhuaidi Burke, Tim McErlane) are also through to the next final. Both 12 teams will debate a Secret Subject debate on Wednesday 6th August. We congratulate other teams and coaches who made the finals. Year 8.1, Year 8.2 and Year 11's were defeated in the finals this week but it was a terrific achievement to get there - QDU covers the North and South Coast, Brisbane region and other outlying regions. Principal Awards Ceremony We were thrilled to see hundreds of students receive awards on Tuesday at our very wonderful ceremony! It really acknowledges the strong focus on academic and vocational achievement in the College. The criteria for receiving awards in the middle school is to gain at least 5 A's in achievement levels and/or application, with slightly less in the Senior school (due to fewer subjects). This means that our overall standards and focus are very high. We were pleased to have a number of guests including Hon Darren Grimwade MP, Mr Jim Midgley Principal St Peter's, Sr Veronica Past Principal St Michael's College and many of our parents. grandparents and friends. Our thanks must go to our liturgy participants, musicians, leaders, hospitality students and all the staff who made it flow so well - Ms Cathy Galvin, Ms Denise Newman, Ms Rachel Fletcher, Ms Olivia Blackie, Ms Nicole Johnson, Ms Amanda Schimke and her team, house coordinators, all the grounds staff and office staff to name but a few. Our Parent Teacher Student Interviews followed and we thank all those who attended and hope that it was productive all round - the feedback received was very positive. Careers Expo and Subject Selection

This was a fantastic evening with a huge range of exhibitors! Our students could find out about all the courses available from the Universities in our region, Training Providers and employers. Oh I think I wish I was a student again as there are so many great choices available!! The exhibitors said that they were so impressed with the questions the students asked, along with the questions the parents asked! Well done! We also held the subject selection talks on the evening and the teachers had their booths displaying their courses and career links - a One Stop Shop approach! So with Year 10 SET planning now happening all are fully equipped to make the choices. With our marvellous Mary MacKillop Centre we were able to have enough room to do this altogether! Thank you to Ms Linda Upton, Ms Sheryl Gregory , Ms Lyndell Russell in the Careers Centre for facilitating our Careers Expo! Thank you to our Curriculum Coordinators and other staff for all their work in presenting their subject areas and to the Senior Leadershp Team, Ms Kate Ruddy

and Ms Denise Newman for all their organisation. One parent, with a building background, was so fascinated by the 3 D Printer that he watched it for quite a while and now he tells me that he wants one to use in his work!! Did you know that a group of Uni Engineering students in the USA have just used a 3 D printer to make an artificial limb (prosthesis) for $350 - normally it would cost 40 thousand dollars! This meant that 6 year old Alex Pring now can do many things that were not previously possible. Enrolments and Scholarships We invite students who are interested in applying for scholarships to register on line. This closes soon so please do as soon as possible. I would also encourage any interested possible applicants for a place in the school in 2015 to apply - we have some vacancies in all year levels and welcome applications. Again I emphasise to families with an incoming 2015 student with siblings currently at the school to submit their enrolment applications if they have not already done so. The Science of Wine Tourism Our Senior students in the Science Sampling and Measurement Certificate Course had an excursion last week to Stanthorpe where they examined the process of from vine to wine, and of dairy to cheese! We are now a Wine Gateway School associated with the Queensland College of Wine Tourism, Stanthorpe. This has great benefits to our Science, Chemistry, Tourism and Hospitality Program. We thanks Ms Nedra Distel-Rose, Mrs Maureen Hopkins and Ms Andrea Hickey for this facilitation.

Year 10 SET Planning The Year 10 SET Planning process commences on Monday 28 July and will run until Friday 15 August. The SET (Senior Education and Training) Plan is designed to inform a student’s choices and decisions around Senior schooling. It is compulsory for all Year 10 students to complete a SET Plan and to attend a SET Planning interview at the College with their parents/carers. All Year 10 students have now received detailed information about the SET Planning process and will know how to complete the online component of the plan. Students have each been given an individual log-in and password. If you have any issues with logging in to the SET planning program, please email Mrs Denise Newman for further advice ([email protected]). Students are required to print off their SET plan and bring it with them to their interview. Please ensure that you have booked an appointment via the Appointment Management page (Step 25) of the SET Planning program. All students have been shown how to complete this step. We look forward to seeing all Year 10 students and their families at the SET plans shortly. Ms Kate Ruddy Senior Learning and Pathways Coordinator.

Monday lunchtime saw a bit of entertainment provided with the Staff taking on the QISSN netball team. The first half started off fairly seriously with the results being goal for goal for the first 7 minutes of play. The teachers then found their groove and took the lead to win the first half 11:7. The secret of this win was Mr Morris forcing a few errors with Bella Walker in shooting and his height made the rebounds a given, leading to the teachers starting to develop this lead. Until this point Bella had been performing admirably under the pressure of having a 6 1/2 foot defender – not usually the norm in girls netball! The second half saw some interesting positional changes with both teams. In an effort to even things out the QISSN girls placed both their tallest player (usually GK) and shortest (usually C) in the shooting positions. The ball was certainly able to find its way down to they circle, but I think these girls were pulling a few legs when they said they were shooters (all in jest of course) with their accuracy letting them down a little, it certainly made things more interesting and garnered a few laughs and comments from the spectators. Mr Vince Webb’s jump shot shooting style, while a little unorthodox certainly worked in his favour and was surprisingly accurate, and Mr Shaun Morris and Mrs Julie Atkins both proved to very versatile in both the shooting and defensive circles. Thanks to all the staff and students for being involved in this game, for the open Girls, this was their last netball game for the year, and a bit of a fun way to finish the season. Thanks to Matisse for umpiring for us, and to the spectators for coming down to watch this game – without Mr Connolly’s involvement this year it was a much more sedate game and no one got hurt!! 2014 Interhouse Athletics Carnival

The 2014 Interhouse Athletics Carnival takes place at the College on Wednesday 13 August. Some preliminary events will be held on Tuesday 12 August. Attendance at school on these days is compulsory for all students. On Wednesday all students are to attend school in their SPORTS UNIFORM, including House shirts and PE bucket hats. If desired, students can change into appropriate House “Costumes” once they are at school. Students may also compete in the St Columban’s Athletics singlet if desired. As part of the St Columban’s ethos of developing “pride through participation”, all students are expected to perform a long jump, shot put, and 100m “run through” (unless competing in other events). There will also be novelty relays on the day. Any sick or injured students are to provide a parental note to their house coordinators either prior to the carnival or on the Wednesday morning, and are encouraged to help their House or the event organiser in important assistant roles. Any students who are absent on the day need to be rung in to the College absentee line as per standard procedures. The tuckshop will be NOT open on Wednesday, instead, the Community Committee will once again be selling their cheeseburgers, and O’Driscoll House will be running a drinks stall to raise money for charity. Please note that parents and spectators are once again invited to join us for what is bound to be a great day. Please ensure that you read the outline of the Athletics Carnival Events Schedule (refer to the College Blog) so that you know when your son/daughter is competing. Note that the 400m, 1500m’s, Discus, Triple Jump, Javelin and some High Jump events will be held on the Wednesday for all Age Groups. Those students who perform well at the carnival, as well as any students who would like to be involved in the 2014 TAS Athletics Team are encouraged to attend training sessions (training times will be confirmed after the interhouse carnival). The TAS Athletics carnival will be held on Tuesday 16 September. Further information including rules, expectations, can be found on the Sports Notice Board outside the Gym the College App and the College Blog. Other details will be forwarded to students via notices and assemblies. Good Luck to all competitors, and may the best house win! If you have any questions regarding the carnival please contact me at the College on 5495 3111. Miss Michelle Wust TAS Sports Coordinator

It was a beautiful sunny day at the recent Sunny Coast All Schools Tournament held at Glasshouse Mountains on Sunday 27 July. We knew we would have our work cut out for us with schools like Chancellor, St Teresa, St Patrick’s, Noosa, Bribie Island State High and Beewah State School, all in hot contention for the over all winner. We had five St Columban’s teams all up, Mixed Yr 8s, two 15yr Boys teams, 15yr Girls, and a red hot Open Mixed side. Overall, we had three Grand final births, narrowly missing out on two: Yr 8 Mixed went down 3-0 and Open Mixed went down in a nail biting drop off 3 on 3 end score 4-3. Once again the 15yr Girls team hit a home run for St Columban’s undefeated the whole day, then to put the icing on the cake with a convincing win in the final. A massive thank you to the parents, teachers, past students, refs and coaches who where involved. Ski NZ Trip

After a decade of ski trips to Perisher, 2014 saw the inaugural New Zealand snow experience eventuate. 40 students and a number of staff converged on Brisbane International Airport on July 6 and the first ever SKI NZ event began. After a 3 hour flight and a 90 minute coach ride we arrived at the Breckenridge Lodge in the sleepy town of Methven. It was well after midnight and we were ready for a few precious hours sleep before the morning trip up to Mount Hutt. The most intense experience on the ski trip for many would be the daily 45 minute bus journey up and down the mountain. There were a few frazzled nerves as we negotiated the one lane unsealed track literally carved in the mountainside. Not a guard rail in sight! By the time we arrived at Mount Hutt – it was minus 1 and windy – we were ready to hit the snow. Gear hire didn’t take too long and then it was 11am – time for the first of our daily 2 hour lessons. Some of the crew picked up the necessary skiing or board-riding skills at an impressive pace, others took longer but almost all showed resilience and perseverance. By 4pm, after our Year 12s had spent the afternoon refining their skills with their friends, we were ready to head back down the goat track to Methven and the warmth of the Breckenridge. By Tuesday, we had the routine sorted – early rise, breakfast, collect gear, get on the bus, arrive, have a lesson, enjoy an afternoon on the snow, enjoy the bus trip back down, relax, dinner, debrief, head to bed. On Wednesday night, there was the option to watch the third Origin game in town and the late finish meant that we decided a late rise on Thursday was warranted. Having said that, there were many tired skiers and boarders to be seen on the slopes on Thursday. Luckily, this did not mean injuries—although Tim McErlane, who did a spot of cliff skiing, might disagree. On our last day, Friday, we woke to the news that the mountain was closed so we finished our NZ tour with an adventure day – jet-boating, a quick spin through Christchurch and a few hours at the amazing Antarctic Centre! It couldn’t have worked out better. All great things inevitably come to an end and we made our way home on Saturday. Very early Saturday. Around 4am Saturday. The only good thing about the early rise was the fact that we would be arriving in Brisbane just before 10! It was great to be home but we all felt that the week went far too quickly. Our Year 12 crew not only enjoyed the week but proved to be fantastic ambassadors for the College. We regularly received praise for the way our Seniors conducted themselves. I would like to thank our students and our dedicated staff who made the week an enjoyable, safe and successful one. Damien Harvey
