PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Wendy Schmid

Welcome to our Newest Members We love embroidery; to see; to feel; to do and we love to share that love with others.

Let us help you find the embroidery path for you. Sixty years ago, when Margaret Oppen and her friends came together, their aim was to share their pleasure in embroidery and design with others. They brought together experienced stitchers and designers to teach and encourage expertise and understanding

of the history of embroidery from all over the world.

With open minds, members learned to value and use traditional skills and techniques to understand and design their own work. The need for a Library and a Collection of historic and inspiring pieces soon followed and a suitcase for each

was set up. Exhibiting, to learn from our own and oth-ers’ work came next. As our newest members, you have inherited this aim and the many ways we achieve it. With encouragement from tutors and members through courses, workshops, and group meetings, you will find your way.

To be in the midst of a group or at 76 Queen St you are part of a long tradition of sharing and encourage-ment. It takes time and patience, tolerance and an

open mind to find solutions to each of your embroi-dery problems. You are not alone!

May the joy of stitching your way, be with you!

Nature’s Forms -

Wet Feltmaking

with Anita Larkin

Saturday 12 & Sunday

13 May

We are excited to offer a workshop by renowned Australian sculptor and felt maker Anita Larkin. This is a great opportuni-ty to learn Anita’s particular method of felt making.

You will begin by learning some essential skills, making a simple seedpod vessel using wool fibres, soapy water and agitation with your hands. Then you will learn Anita’s method of skinfelting to create intriguing felted

shapes that are cut, stitched and manipulated during the felting process. Learn how to create multiple pock-ets in your felt forms, and how to embed fabrics, yarns

(or more wool) to achieve high relief textures upon the felt surface. This is an inspiring class that will teach you many new skills in feltmaking to create Nature’s Forms. All you need to bring is a towel and a pair of pliers. Anita will

supply everything else for $15 (payable to the tutor) You can bring objects from nature for inspiration if you like. More images of work by Anita Larkin are available on her website. www.anitalarkin.com

BASIC COLOUR THEORY with Kath Wilkinson Sunday 8 April

This workshop is designed to in-vestigate Basic Colour Theory and to familiarise students with the various terminologies and lan-guage associated with colour and its role in design and planning colour schemes for original embroideries and textile works.

Information will also be discussed on the characteris-tics, symbolism, moods and the psychology of colour. Completion of this workshop is necessary for students

wishing to enrol in the Contemporary Stitch & Design

Certificate who haven’t explored colour in the Intro-duction to Embroidery Course or equivalent.

LET’S PRINT - FUN WITH INDIAN BLOCKS A 2 DAY PRINTING WORKSHOP with Susan Barker Saturday 21 & Sunday April 22

This is an experimental workshop. Susan will have Indian blocks on hand for you to use to create your own printed fabrics which you can then embellish with beading and embroidery.

Why not try over-printing on commercial printed

fabrics! Anything is possible. Bring your special fabrics, threads and embellish-ments and come prepared to experiment and have fun. Skill level: All welcome

DESIGN WORKSHOP with Mary Brown Saturday 2 June

This workshop is an introduction to the visual lan-guage used by artists and designers to communicate ideas, feelings, etc. Mary will briefly cover the ele-ments of design and will demonstrate how the princi-ples of design are brought into play to compose with the elements of design. Mary has written a compre-hensive booklet with many images on the Elements

and Principles of Design which you can request to be emailed to you as a PDF once you have fully paid for the workshop. It must be printed and brought to the workshop. If you are not online, Mary will print it for you at Officeworks and will bill you accordingly.

Delivery of this information will be accompanied with

Powerpoint presentations. There is so much ground to cover that there will not be time in this workshop for practical work. This workshop is open to all, but if you intend to en-rol in the Contemporary Stitch & Design course, this is an excellent workshop for you to do, if you have not already formally or independently studied ele-

ments and principles of design. DESIGN WORKSHOP – DAY 2 (optional) with Mary Brown Sunday 3 June The Design Workshop on Saturday 2 June, is purely a theoretical day, as mentioned in the advertisement

for that day. A follow-up day has been granted, and

this will be a practical day. 3 or 4 designs will be done over the day. The designs will be created from photos taken specifically for the workshop. Each design will employ prescribed elements and principles of designs. The aim is not to create literal images

from the primary sources. Preparation for this workshop involves YOU, the participant, taking photos of: Crowd situations Cityscapes (buildings, shop fronts, etc – take photos from different angles) Landscapes (can be gardens) – take photos from a

distance as well as close ups – take these from differ-ent perspectives The photos must have great clarity and are to be printed in colour on A4 paper. Bring at least 6 photos

for each group. On the day, please bring: Mary Brown’s booklet on Design Elements and

Principles, Photos (as prescribed above), Good quality sheets of drawing paper or an artist’s jour-nal, tracing paper, drawing materials – artline pens or/and ‘lead’ pencils which must be at least B or above, ruler. You may apply to do this Day 2 Design Work-

shop if you did Mary Brown’s 1-day Design Workshop in 2017 or intend to do the theoreti-cal Design Workshop on the Saturday 2 June 2018. Any enquiries, please contact Mary Brown on 98581326 or email her at [email protected]

CONSTRUCTION TIPS

with Carolyn Pearce Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 May

This will be a workbook lesson to create samples of blocking and lacing your finished work, binding and backing wall-hangings and blankets with particular emphasis on cor-ners. You will also practise

joins and blind stitching, lining a needle case and making up book covers. Notes will be provided. During lunch and after the workshop there will be opportunities to discuss individ-

ual issues. A sewing machine will be necessary. There are 2 Guild machines that can be booked and Carolyn will bring her elderly Elna.

MYSTERY BALL WORKSHOP 2 with Jenny O’Sullivan Sunday 27 May & Sunday 22 July This second Mystery Ball Workshop is being held by

special request. Come along to this fun workshop and make a lovely 3D Mystery Ball.

THE “MYSTERY” WILL BE REVEALED ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE WORKSHOP !

On the first day you will begin embroidering the fabric for your ball. Try some decorative new stitches that you haven’t tried before. Use some of the unusual and beautiful variegated threads which can be purchased from the Threaded Needle to give that “WOW” effect. On the second day we will construct the ball. The ball can then be used as a unique Christmas Deco-

ration, a gift for a new baby, or just a decorative talk-ing point for your home. A novel use for the ball could be as a signature ball to be signed at birthday parties, school end of year parties and even family Christmas gathering.

Contemporary Stitch & Design Course -

Whitework Embroidery Module with Helen Parsons Saturdays 12 May, 9 June and 14 July

9.15am – 4.00pm In this course every stitching module requires the stu-dents to create their own designs, and be experi-mental with materials and techniques.

This is one of the elective stitching modules in this course, and as with all these modules the students will:

present a case study on a particular specialty;

experiment with materials, threads and tech-

niques in samples during the module; and

create a design from primary and/or secondary

sources for a stitched work for assessment. One month is given to do this stitched work. The design process is also handed in for assessment.

Helen has had a few years teaching and working with the Fine Needlework Group at the Guild. She is highly skilled in traditional fine needlework and in the last few

years has been exploring contemporary Whitework. Techniques will be demonstrated in the module and students will be guided through their experimental work over the 3 classes. Bookings will close Thursday 12 April (capped at 10 places).

Khambira Quilt Workshop with Alison Snepp Thursday 9 & Friday 10 August

A number of my students have expressed interest in making a quilt using the Khambira technique from India. This quilt is a single bed size

and is hand embroidered all over with large, carefully-placed stitches. Tradi-tionally Khambira work is trimmed with pompoms.

Students prepare the quilt top before the workshop – and there are only 9 pieces in this quilt. At the

workshop the quilt top will be marked up with the design before the stitching is started. The materials used are cotton patchwork fabrics, the embroidery is worked with perlé or broder cot-ton and the pompoms are made with stranded cot-ton. The fabrics are plain colours in your own

choice of colours. Skill level: suitable for all levels of embroiderers who have some experience of patchwork.

Samite Spot Sampler Workshop with Alison Snepp Saturday 11 & Sunday 12 August

I think that it is time to do another major sampler and have recently found a collec-tion of counted thread embroidery from the 4th, 5th and 6th centuries from Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The sampler is a spot-style embroidery and the motifs use a number of different counted thread techniques in both orthodox and unorthodox methods. The

threads are a selection of Gumnut ‘Buds’ silks, DMC Perlé 8 and 12 and Stranded Cotton in characteristic colours. The sampler is worked on 30-count natural evenweave linen with a small appliqué of brown linen

(provided with the workshop folio). The size of the completed embroidery is approximately 21 cm x 21 cm. Skill level: students need some experience of counted thread embroidery on linen for this workshop. There

is some preparation to be done before the workshop.

SURFACE STITCHERY CONTEMPORARY SAMPLERS with Susan Barker

Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 June Many of the historic samplers seen in museum exhibitions were made by young girls learning to perfect one stitch,

usually cross stitch. You may have even stitched a tradi-tional sampler that you have designed or worked from a kit or other design.

You will be encouraged to produce your own very in-

dividual contemporary sampler that celebrates you as an embroiderer. You may choose to work on simply planning your samples, learning new stitches, or ex-plore new ways of working with old favourites - in the round, as fillings, detached, laced or whipped. You can be a beginning stitcher or an embroiderer

with a lot of stitch knowledge and experience. You can combine all your surface stitchery knowledge or simply concentrate on one or a few stitches. Samples will be available to inspire and tempt you to experiment and design one of these works for your-self. Be surprised and have fun!

Skill level: All levels LOVE & DEVOTION with Mary Brown Sundays 8 July &

9 September These workshops intro-duce you to contemporary curatorial practices. steer-ing you towards working as an artist with a curator, with a goal of later exhib-

iting in a group show at 76 Queen Street Gallery. Curating has evolved from its earlier role of choosing works, determining how best to display them, etc., to

now finding ways to engage the audience, to collabo-rate and innovate. The theme that you would be working with for a stitched work is Love & Devotion (Most curated

exhibitions are themed.) Before the first workshop, think about what this term means to you. It may be something within the realm of your own experience, such as your love and devotion to family, to a ca-reer, to your garden, etc. It could be a researched-based subject such as the displays of love and de-

votion of adherents to a belief system. It will be a challenge but a very exciting one. Skill level: Intermediate — Competent skill level re-quired

Classes Offered at Stitch-In 2018: Symphony in Silk or Peacock Feathers

with Dianne Magro Dianne has offered to teach 2 techniques this year. Students may choose either ‘Symphony in Silk’ or ‘Peacock Feathers’. Symphony in Silk is based on stitch direction to create a design. Dianne has a great love for silk fabric and threads. The threads of

the fabric are used to create beautiful contrast be-tween very high shine and flat dull colour. You will take a plain piece of silk and turn it into something quite different. Some experience is necessary for this workshop. The Peacock Feathers workshop give instruction for

making a four piece Chatelaine set as well as twisted cords and a tassel. Alternatively, your stitching may become a panel for a very special piece of work. Please advise at time of booking which of Dianne’s options you would like.

Abstract Embroidery with Helen Parsons

Helen is offering Abstract Embroi-dery to introduce participants to the fun, ease and enjoyment of extracting abstract elements from personal photographs or photo-graphs from magazines etc. and

interpreting them in surface stitch-es to create lively and colourful contemporary em-broidery. Fabric and threads with their unique qualities can be a starting point for contemporary design when com-

bined with abstracted line elements from favourite

photographs. Working directly from materials means working without any preliminary sketches or precon-ceived ideas of the end result. It is a ‘hands on’ ap-proach, which challenges our inventiveness, a desire to explore and to do something different. You will also learn about abstract artists of the mid-

20th century and see examples of their work. You will learn how to use interesting visual elements of the world around you to create interesting and intriguing abstract designs.

The Point of Stitch Expertise Events Craft and Quilt Fair

Darling Harbour from 20-24 June, 2018

There are about 2 months before work is due in, at the Guild for The Point of Stitch display. We are look-

ing for all styles of work, traditional and contempo-rary. So far we only have a few works made using machine embroidery, we hope that changes. There’s plenty of time to make some small works for Installa-tion 1 ie a 10cm x 15cm work

that shows the viewer how we use stitch to make and mend.

Explore mending techniques (for example appliqué, layer-ing, darning;) and making techniques (using the

many types of seams, insert-

ing zippers, etc). We really need your help to make a striking visual impact, as we did with the circles installa-tion; we need lots and lots of these small works. When mak-ing them use 2 of Effie’s Magic

or Zinger colours and black, white, grey, gold and /or silver. (Postcard Sized — Top: ‘Seems OK’ by Susan Barker; Lower: ‘The Circle’ Mending Series #3 by Cheryl Aitkin)

Another small work that is fun to make is the Bottomless Cup for

Installation 3. Cut the bottom out of a cleaned, take away coffee cup and decorate the outside in up to 8 of Effie’s Magic or Zinger colours and black, white, grey, gold and/or silver. We need lots of these too!

Let’s make a statement – we have 3 fabric bolt stands with 13 prongs each and each prong, with an empty cardboard fabric roll, can hold between 15 to 20 coffee cups so we need about 200 cups per stand! We have about 70 so far!

See the spectacular wedding

party made by Clarinda Jordan on the next page! We can put all the cups made by a group together on one of the cardboard ‘rolls’.

(Images show the Bottom-

less Cups assembled onto

Fabric Bolt Stands)

Personally I am really enjoying stitching for Installa-tion 2, on organza, I have never done it before. Give it a go because like me, you may find that you enjoy it too. Of course you may be a very experienced or-

ganza stitcher, whether by ma-chine or hand. Please make at least one piece! We are asking you to stitch a 15cm x 20cm design on a 17cm x 26cm piece of organza. Use up to 8 of Effie’s Magic or Zinger colours and

black, white, grey, gold and /or silver. These small works will be stitched together to form long drapes, which should look stun-ning! (Right works by Cheryl

Aitkin, Judith Langdon, Pat

Chambers, Helen Whelan and Margaret Veenstra) The final installation asks for a piece of wearable art, a 3D work or a piece of textile art that would hang on a wall. Lat-eral Stitchers have made a piece of wall art, see the

image below. If you are making any work for this in-stallation please let us know what resources you will need to display your work. Use any or all of Effie’s Magic or Zinger colours and black, white, grey, gold and /or silver. (Part of the Lateral Stitchers Recycle It work for In-stallation 4)

One of The Points of Stitch is to ‘point out’ that we can use our stitched work to raise money. We are asking members to donate their Postcard Sized works and Bottomless Cups so they can be sold. Therefore

unless the maker writes their name and specifies NFS on the inside of a coffee cup and on the back of a Postcard Sized work, all entries will be for sale for $5

each. All money raised will go towards the Furniture Fund. The sale will take place when The Point of Stitch is on display in July and August at the Guild. Thank you to all members who have already started making work for The Point of Stitch and remember:-

Lucky me, I get the most interesting of messages! Wendy Schmid

I am writing to ask for your help. We are the Wiltshire county branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity - the UK's oldest tri-service military charity and the only one in operation during WW1. As part of our WW1 - related activities, we are working with children

from Sutton Veny Primary School. Since 1918, chil-dren from the school have, on Anzac Day, laid flowers upon the 144 Australian WW1 graves in the church-yard next to the school. With complete reverence and

pride, these young children make sure that even if the Australian families can't be there, someone will remember and honour these brave soldiers. This year

we are helping the children to make hearts, based on WW1 sweetheart pincushions, one for each soldier. It would be the most wonderful thing if we could achieve some embroidered hearts from Australia, to help the young ones understand the losses of the Great War and the continuing role of the military in all our lives. Let me know if you might be able to help,

and I will send you further details. After my reply, and explaining about our Anzac Post-card Exhibition, Karen sent, As said, we are working with the school making hearts, and will be spending a day with them doing

so - on March 27, to be precise. The whole school, all 170+ of them, will join in; from ages 4 to 11, it will be a really lovely day (and quite a challenge!). Lt Colonel Neil Stace is a serving British Army officer who was a finalist in the Great British Sewing Bee, and he will come along in uniform, to join in and help them understand.

http://www.suttonveny.wilts.sch.uk/about-us/anzac/ There are two things I would like to achieve, in order that the children remember the day, and that they remember SSAFA. (Many of them are service children and may go on to serve themselves, and it is im-

portant that they know to come to us - SSAFA - if ever they need help. Occasions like this help bed

SSAFA in their minds, for the future).

1) We would really like some embroidered Hearts

from Australia - Helen M. Stevens, an international embroiderer, has facilitated a FB group.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/StitchinmyHeart/ Contained therein is a template for the Hearts, plus a PO Box address in the UK for them to be sent to. The instructions are just guidelines - you will be able to design your own Australia-themed hearts, I am sure.

We are exhibiting the children's Anzac Hearts in Salis-bury throughout June, and it would be incredible if we could have some hearts from Australia to be placed alongside them.

2) Anzac Day is likely too soon for you to provide Hearts - I have no idea how long parcels take from Australia - but if we could have a written letter per-haps from yourself, letting the children know that you, as Australian embroiderers, are really pleased that the children are remembering your soldiers, and that you will be sending over some Hearts to join in

with the Salisbury exhibition in June.

Thank you in advance for your considerations.

The letter from The Embroiderers’ Guild NSW has

been sent to the school to be received by 27 March.

TRIP(S)TYCH 2018 Trip(s)tych is the title of the Wagga Wagga Group of the Embroiderers’ Guild 2016 Triennial Exhibition and

will be proudly hung in our beautiful new building at 76 Queen Street, Concord West in April-May 2018. For the original exhibition we chose a twist on the word TRIPTYCH - a set of three associated artistic, literary, or musical works intended to be appreciated together- to display our hand stitched creations, each of us presenting 3 pieces as a Trip(S)tych.

Trip(s)tych encapsulated a few ideas. The first was to invoke the Three Graces and bring beauty, elegance and humour to our show. For elegance you can’t go past Liz Warrell’s “An Elizabethan Trio” and natural beauty was encapsulated by Fay Grant’s “Rocky

Stream”. For wit I would suggest Penny King’s

“Monday is Wash Day” and Sharon Bush’s “Postcards”. Sharon’s works were inspired by photos of her recent travels to Canada. Yet another twist on the title as Sharon’s work was indeed a ‘Trip Stitch’. The second idea was that a triptych is ‘appreciated together’ so it became a celebration of our Wagga Wagga Group. The styles and interest of our members

are diverse as you will experience, everyone brings a different point of view, yet everyone is appreciated and our group is all the better for it. An integral part of any Wagga Wagga Exhibition is the work of our Junior Stitchers which was also proudly displayed. Our Junior Stitchers constantly impress us with their creativity and flair for colour.

For this show we are proud to present the work of Ab-bie Holbrook a previous member of our junior embroi-derers. Her portrait of her grandmother, Mrs Barbara Holbrook OAM, was Abbie’s HSC major art work. It is stitched with intelligence, grace and beauty and incor-porates their love of textile and of each other. This is

not to be missed. An added feature of our original exhibition was our Flying Free Birds that we have been stitching as a community project to raise money for Wagga Wom-en’s Health Centre. Our beautiful birds were sold throughout the exhibition raising hundreds of dollars. The birds have now flown off to their new homes and

new lives. We hope that you enjoy Trip(s)tych as much as we have enjoyed it’s creation.

FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY MACHINE

STITCH 2018

September 21-November 7

There is great excitement at the Embroiderers’ Guild of NSW. We have been inspired. Bernina is celebrat-ing its 125th Anniversary. Karl Friedrich Gegauf in-vented the hemstitch sewing machine in 1893 in Swit-

zerland and from his workshop the global firm, Berni-na, emerged and still remains a family business. The Guild is pleased to announce a very special Festi-val of Contemporary Machine Stitch during September and October this year to help celebrate this wonderful milestone.

Here are some of our thoughts so far for the Festival:

A juried exhibition of contemporary machine

stitch open to local, national and international entrants, with a separate under 18 category to encourage younger sewists. The focus will be on innovation and originality. All work selected

will be for sale.

Machine stitched items for sale through the Gal-

lery shop.

An exhibition of machine stitched works from

our Collection, donated over the last 60 years.

A display of work by Guild Tutors who teach

machine embroidery techniques.

Workshops focusing on machine embroidery

techniques geared towards beginner, intermedi-ate and experienced stitchers.

Exhibition Floor talks.

Talks by machine stitch experts.

A display of machine embroidery books from

our library. As you can see, we have our work cut out. Conditions

of Entry and an on-line entry form are being worked out now and will soon be available. Watch this space! Start planning your entry, maximum size 50cm by 50

cm. Each work should strive for innovation, metamor-phosis, transformation and unconventionality.
