NASA HQ cancelled NASA-STD-8739.7 (ESD) on 22 February 2007 with ANSI/ESD S20.20-1999 as the replacement document. To comply with ESD S20.20-1999, the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) developed GSFC-WM-001 to define requirements for protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage to ESD sensitive (ESDS) devices and to ensure reliable performance of GSFC spaceflight and ground support hardware. This work manual is specific for GSFC to include GSFC suppliers/ contractors and GSFC Wallops Flight Facility. The following ESD training courses are based on GSFC-WM-001. NOTE: For non-GSFC students, this GSFC-WM-001 based training course may not satisfy your organization’s ESD requirements. For ESD Program Monitors and Trainers (2 days for Program Monitors/ 3 days for Trainers): This 16 hour training course is for those who play a major role in ESD damage prevention. The first day emphasizes the fundamentals of static electricity and GSFC-WM-001 familiarization. The second day is devoted to Test Methods (hands-on) in accordance with Appendix A of the work manual. Students will become familiar with tools/equipment for measuring parameters such as surface resistance, electrical ground, ionizer decay rate, relative humidity, etc. NOTE: For non-GSFC students, this GSFC-WM-001 based training course may not satisfy your organization’s ESD requirements. For Operators / Inspectors (4 hours): This 4 hour training is for those who assemble, inspect, test, or otherwise process electronic, electrical, or electromechanical parts or equipment containing devices sensitive to electrostatic discharges (ESD). Proper handling techniques, understanding sources of static charges and controlling static charges are explained using a combination of lecture, instructor demonstrations, video/s as applicable. The Introduction to Space Flight Hardware Workmanship Standards course provides students with a general understanding of how NASA’s Technical Standards for workmanship work to ensure reliable performance from the electronic hardware manufactured for NASA’s missions in space. Training encompasses lecture, demonstrations, some hands on training in soldering in accordance with NASA standard 8739.3 and crimping and cabling exercises in accordance with NASA standard 8739.4. Overview of the other NASA 8739.x classes includes Surface Mount Technology (SMT), NASA standard 8739.2, to related requirements covering solder paste testing, co-planarity inspection, thermal profiling and process control features. Finally the student will also cover the two currently offered Electrostatic Discharge Control (ESD) courses, NASA standard 8739.7, (cancelled but currently in use) and NASA’s adoption of ESDA ANSI S-20.20 to the GSFC specific WM-001 standard for Electrostatic Discharge Control Program. This training covers differences and similarities within the documents and some in depth understanding from a top level view of implementation, stressing the importance of manager’s awareness of ESD in our spaceflight environment. This Certified IPC Specialist course is a comprehensive, thirty-two hour non-modular, knowledge based course that trains students through lecture, demonstration, and labs to the methods and procedures presented in the J-STD-001E document and the Space Electronics addendum ES. Unlike the standard modular IPC course for J-STD-001 where the student is required to take Module 1 and at least one other module (2,3,4 or 5) the Space Applications course covers material from all modules including the Space Addendum module 6. This training class is NASA preferred “Space Specific” geared for contracts which require J-STD-001ES. In this class only the requirements for Space are taught (Class 3 + Space). Class 1 and 2 requirements are not covered. After completion of training an IPC training certificate is awarded that is portable *. *This training will not be acceptable for Non-NASA contracts specifying J-STD-001E covering all quality classes (Class 1, 2, and 3). The J-STD-001 “Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies” has emerged as the preeminent authority for electronics assembly manufacturing. The standard describes materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered interconnections. This course training focuses on the knowledge and hand skills required to produce high-quality soldered interconnections. The new IPC J-STD-001 CIS course is modularized to allow companies maximum flexibility in training their CIS's. The J-STD-001 “Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies” has emerged as the preeminent authority for electronics assembly manufacturing. The standard describes materials, methods and verification criteria for producing high quality soldered interconnections. The standard emphasizes process control and sets industry-consensus requirements for a broad range of electronic products. Now, IPC has a comprehensive, hands-on-solder training and certification program based on J-STD-001 that gives companies all the tools they need to increase employee skills and performance. The IPC J-STD-001 CIT course is 40 hours and includes through-hole and surface mount technology training. CIT's will study the content of the current revision of the J-STD-001 and have to demonstrate acceptable workmanship skills and pass an open and closed book examination with an 80% average score or better with no single score below 70%. Each CIT who successfully completes the program will receive: • Instructor Guide • Instructor Workbook • CD-ROM of Visuals • IPC-Handbook-001 • 15 open book and 15 closed book CIS Examination Booklets (including answer sheets, and answer keys) • Workmanship Test Grading Sheet and Criteria • Artwork for J-STD board (Gerber data) • J-STD-001D, J-STD-002, J-STD-003, J-STD-004, J-STD-005, and J-STD-006 • IPC-9191 (General Requirements for Implementation of SPC and Process Control) • IPC Certification as a J-STD-001 CIT Upon completion of the IPC J-STD-001 CIT course, CIT's are certified for two years.
