NOAA Initiatives
• Maximize return on observing system investments– New office to examine
requirements across NOAA
– Develop strategies to meet multiple requirements with a single investment
– Determine the most effective mix of investments in observation and data management systems
– Leverage domestic and international partnerships

OSTP-Earth Observation Assessment
Data Discoverability Activities
• Establishment of NOAA Data Catalog– http://data.noaa.gov/ (in beta test)– Provides inventory per US Open Data Policy
• Continued maintenance of subsidiary catalogs at each Data Center
9
Data Accessibility Activities
• Data Access procedural directive in progress– EDMC work plan item– Started monthly telecons– Outline at http://goo.gl/0SXMS
• NWS Integrated Dissemination Program (IDP)– Planned Enterprise Geospatial Services– Operational hosting at NCEP for NWS & others
• Unified Access Framework (UAF) – improved access to gridded obs & model outputs
• Other implementations of standards-based services across NOAA
10
Data Usability Activities
11
• Metadata training webinars• Conversion to ISO metadata standard at NODC• ATRAC metadata editor at NCDC• Metadata metrics & diagnostics at NGDC
NOAA dataset IDs assigned to date: http://search.datacite.org/ui?&q=10.7289
• Ongoing preservation & stewardship activities at NOAA National Data Centers
• CLASS interface improvements (CSI, M2M)• Assignment of permanent dataset IDs
– To encourage archiving– To enable citation– Work on Data Citation directive in progress
