“We all have a platform or life experience that sends us in one direction or the other. For me, it was

a simple handshake with a new Stanford University graduate – I was 13 years old. From that day until now I have looked up to, respected and admired that person. Five years ago he said something that was profound and I would like to pass it on, as it is an un-deniable truth. He said, and I quote, ‘Philanthropy has a way of giving back in ways we cannot imagine.’ That

man has changed the face of San Diego and his name is Mr. Malin Burnham. Malin, thanks for that handshake and encouraging words that turned a tough, at-risk kid around.”

“There’s something special about Noah.” Lately I’ve heard more people say those words than ever before, and for good reason.

In January, we publicly announced our plans to build two of the first memory care homes in the nation for people with developmental disabilities. Now, we have over 20 business partners and a passionate team of fundraisers who have collected $4 million in donations and in-kind services, and another $1 million available for matched funds.

This means security for us and our folks in knowing when we say they have a lifelong home, we will be able to make that happen. But outside of Noah, this is a first step for the larger community in supporting the millions of people with developmental disabilities as they age and the millions more who are family and friends.

I’ve had the opportunity to share our story with the National Down Syndrome Society, the Alzheimer’s Association, the ARC and many others from the Capitol in California to the Capitol in Washington DC. For some people, it was the first they had heard of the strong connection between Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s. With others, it was a discussion about the lack of quality options available to aging caretakers and people with developmental disabilities in immediate need of additional support. Opening 20 beds is a great start, but it’s just that – a start.

And while the CEO is away, the folks will play! Our very own Betsy took home a silver medal in the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles – she’s become quite the celebrity athlete. Some of the folks put on a Shrek play at St. Madeline Sophie’s Center and the ENTIRE campus went camping at Whispering Winds Catholic Conference Camp in Julian! You know they love making new friends, so make sure to book the dates of our upcoming events in your calendar and bring someone new!

To close, I just can’t say thank you enough for your support during this new adventure of ours into aging. To think, 40 years ago, people with developmental disabilities weren’t living into their 30s. How fortunate we are to see our beloved folks live full and happy lives and how fortunate we are to have Noah Homes. My thoughts are with those who do not have a Noah, and my feet are pushing forward to give a strong voice to those without one.

Noah continues to have the good fortune of receiving strong referrals for time, treasure and talent. The McKinney family encouraged Molly Nocon to reach

out to Alexis Parker, Executive Director of HomeAid San Diego. This blossomed into an amazing partnership and enduring friendship that resulted in more than $1 million in projected in-kind services and donated materials for the new Memory Care Homes.

Established in 2002, HomeAid San Diego is a nonprofit dedicated to building multi-unit housing for San Diego’s temporarily homeless men, women and children. The organization is supported by an alliance of local building and real estate industry organizations. Under the leadership of Builder Captains, HomeAid San Diego develops projects with the support of trade partners and volunteers. Once they are completed, professional service providers help residents regain strength and purpose in a safe environment.

Alexis and HomeAid are enormously helpful and encouraging business partners who continue to find more resources to guide the project. A core pre-construction group has worked tirelessly in consulting, collaborating, designing, budgeting and gaining permits. Additional partners continue to join and expedite the process of prepping the grounds for construction, grading and building.

We are proud of our community partners, and will soon see the tremendous impact their contributions are making on the lives of those in need.

Building Partner SpotlightWith the help of so many dedicated individuals, we are fast approaching the day we have all been waiting for; the day

we open the doors to our new Memory Care Homes.Without the generosity and commitment of

our Building Partners, we would not be at the place we are today on this journey .

Here are a few words from just a few of them —

Down SyndromeCenter

Alexis Parker Executive Director, HomeAid San Diego

“The partnership between HomeAid San Diego and Noah Homes began over a year ago and I am truly amazed at

the outpouring of support for their Memory Care Residences project – the building industry, the community, their supporters, and local and state officials have all

stepped up to ‘join the Noah Homes journey.’ The building resources we have asked to participate in this project have all answered with a resounding ‘Yes’ – many of them offering their servicespro bono or at a significant discount, saving Noah Homes over $500,000 inconstruction costs. And we haven’t evenstarted putting up walls yet! HomeAidSan Diego is honored and proud to helplead the charge for Noah Homes to buildthese innovative and progressive homesfor developmentally disabled adultswith Alzheimer’s where they can livecomfortably for their entire life.”

Nancy K. Keenan AIA, LEED AP President DAHLIN GROUP ARCHITECTURE | PLANNING

“As architects, we are often honored with the opportunity to craft the most personal

of spaces for our clients — their home. In working with Noah Homes, we have had the unique privilege of designing for a family of residents

with disabilities — elevating the meaning of home to another level. Getting to know the residents, understanding how they live as a family and working with the amazing people who provide for them every day has been a honor for us in every way!”

Jeffrey T. (JT) Barr, RLA, ASLA Principal, Schmidt Design Group, Inc.

“The collaboration between Noah Homes and Schmidt Design Group, Inc. has resulted in a series of exterior spaces that capture the unique spirit of the tranquil campus. The gardens at Noah

Homes will provide residents with an environment that fosters physical, mental, and spiritual enrichment. It has been a

tremendously rewarding experience to “Join the Journey” and partner with such a compassionate, dedicated, and driven group of individuals.”

Scott & Russ Murfey Principals, Murfey Construction

“Seeing the overwhelming enthusiasm and support for such a monumental project is inspiring. It is incredibly rewarding to be a part of such a tight-knit, heartfelt community.”

Krista Olson Murfey Construction, Project Manager

“Working with everyone at Noah Homes, and the construction team, has proven to

be a blessing, and one of the more fulfilling projects I have ever had the chance to be affiliated with. I have met so many great people

along the way so far, and I can’t wait to celebrate with everyone at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Memory Care homes we are building for such an amazing organization.”

Let’s Turn Some Dirt The completion of another successful Summer BBQ and

Brewfest marked the ability to begin construction on the new Memory Care Homes!

What started as a Sage family/Nice Guy’s BBQ and Jim Mulvaney Sr. Concert on the Green, grew in to our event with over 400 people in attendance. We were able to raise $83,173 during our fund a need for our new Memory Care Homes and a grand total of $200,000 throughout the entire event! As confetti canons went off our grand finale began with 2nd lead gift donor, Kim Lauridsen firing up a tractor and dropping the “Let’s Turn Some Dirt” banner, signifying we were ready for building.

Once again, the Nice Guy’s kept our stomachs full while residents and friends danced the night away to Woodstock Mudd, our neighborhood rock band. Some attendees sipped on beers from our local breweries while others bid on auction items ranging from weekend trips away to adventurous outings in sunny San Diego.

2015 has been a year of growth with so much more coming, we could not have done it without our wonderful donors. Make sure to mark your calendars for next summer’s event on June 25, 2016.

Noah resident, Jacquelyn (left) and her parents enjoying the festivities.

With suitcases in hand, sleeping bags, hats, sunscreen, swimsuits and more, our beloved folks were treated to a fabulous weekend of glamping (glamorous

camping) at Whispering Winds in Julian. Despite the August heat tipping 95 degrees, the campers enjoyed the beautiful outdoors, swimming, tons of fresh air, archery, campfires, creating tie-dye t-shirts and making s’mores in sugar cones that melted on the hot coals of the campfire. In need of some rest and relaxation from all of the festivities, residents could head back to their air-conditioned cabins.

Other highlights of the weekend were many and memorable, including:

• The amazing smile and sheer joy on Scotty’s face as he bobbed around the pool unencumbered by his wheelchair.

• One new resident, Phillip, doing a rain dance around the campfire.

• Tim in a hammock, smiling ear to ear, without a care in the world.

• Morgan leading songs at the campfire and telling everyone to listen closely.

• Christine finally getting in the pool and then gliding around like a butterfly, laughing loudly.

• Richard asking to stay an extra day.

The culmination of the fun weekend was a beautiful Mass celebrated by Father Tony Stanonik, a San Diego Diocesan priest serving in the missions of Nicaragua; and Deacon Scott from Mother of Confidence Catholic Church.

As always, we were all impressed with the enormous planning and preparation by the many volunteers as well as Noah Homes’ SandraRocco-Melville, Kim Keane, Kim Lober, Alyssa Moniz, Aricka Peraita and many others. It truly took a village to make this event the great success it was.

A Sense of Security for Our FamiliesThe construction of our new Memory Care Homes definitely brings a

feeling of security and comfort to the families of Noah Homes’ residents as they realize the new potential need for more specialized care and support for the folks.

“By the time he’s ready for that, that it’ll be in place, gives me such peace of mind, knowing that he’s there and he’ll be staying there,” said Anne Riemann, parent of Noah Homes resident Tim.

Richard’s smiling face has been at Noah Homes for 20+ years. You can usually find him socializing with his friends or in the administration office. His brother Leonard Stevens, who is based out of Palm Springs, has been a

big supporter of Noah Homes and could not be more excited about the campus extension. Leonard’s passion and love for his brother is electric. At Noah Homes he knows his brother is in a safe and loving environment. Keeping Richard and all his friends in that one-of-a-kind setting is so important and that is what the new Memory Care Homes mean to him.

Leonard added: “Their bodies and mind may change but their souls don’t, we need to protect that” and we can by building the new Memory Care Homes.

These families understand how important Noah Homes is to all of their family members and are very excited about the new reality of it truly being their forever home.Leonard Stevens enjoying the Summer BBQ &

There’s No Place Like Home – Let’s Make Sure There Is One!

Alzheimer’s disease is the most expensive condition in the nation – and growing

•Alzheimer’s is the third leading cause of mortality in San Diego County and 6th leading cause of death in California.

• The average per-person Medicaid spending for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is 19 times higher than average per-person Medicaid spending for all other seniors.

As is the amount of people with developmental disabilities• People with developmental disabilities are living longer, from 25 in 1983 to 60+ today.

• Studies suggest that more than 75 percent of those with Down syndrome aged 65 and older have Alzheimer’s disease, nearly 6 times the percentage of people in this age group who do not have Down syndrome.

Meaning Today, a Forever Home May Be a Broken Promise

The Lanterman Act is a California law that guarantees people with developmental disabilities receive the quality services they deserve to help them reach their full developmental potential, while empowering them to live as independently as possible in integrated communities of their choice.

Long-term funding shortfalls that were exacerbated by more than $1 billion in cuts during the Great Recession have left government-subsidized programs and services severely underfunded. Many services have been decimated and community based providers across California are being forced to lower standards, slash programs and shut their doors. While much of the economy has recovered from the deep recession, the state’s system of care under the Lanterman Act remains in real jeopardy. We need a 10% across-the-board-increase for regional centers and community providers. #KeepThePromise

For more information on how to advocate for people with developmental disabilities, please contact Molly Nocon at 619-660-6200 or [email protected]

“The Medicare proportion of the health care budget is going up faster than anything else, and the cost of hospital stays is one of the fastest growing components of that care. This was really an opportunity to look at how you can deliver higher value care while maintaining or improving quality and reducing cost.” — Seth Landefeld, MD, chief of the UCSF Division of Geriatrics.

“The system is in crisis and we must act now. Waiting is no longer an option.” – Lanterman Coalition

With the launch of a capital campaign to garner financial support for two of the first Memory Care Homes in the nation, Noah “Founding

Donors” stepped forward with generous lead gifts:

•Peter & Mary Ellen Ferrantelli gave our first lead gift of $1 million

•Shortly after, Kim Lauridsen gave a second lead gift of $1 million

•John & Colleen Garbaczewski then donated $100,000

Additional naming opportunities are available for gifts of $25,000 and above. Please contact our development department at 619 660-6200 x 121 and speak with Marketing Manager, Mary Bones [email protected].

These initial donations gave Noah Homes even greater confidence in reaching out to families, friends and the business community at large. In the six months following the January kickoff event, a swell of support* has resulted in $4 million in donations with another $1 million available to match. We are forever grateful for your support.

Betsy’s Backstroke Earns Silver Medal in 2015 Special Olympics

After an exciting week at the 2015 Special Olympic World Games this summer, Betsy came

home with stories to tell, dressed in shiny new Team USA gear and showing off multiple medals for her achievements.

In the weeks leading up to the event, Betsy became a local celebrity athlete, not just around Noah Homes, but around the county, as she was featured in multiple news segments on both local TV and radio stations. Interviewed on KUSI’s Good Morning San Diego, Fox Sports San Diego, NBC 7 San Diego and Easy 98.1 radio, Betsy shared her story and excitement for the games, talking about her past swimming accomplishments and the events she would be participating in this year.

All of her hard work and preparation paid off as Betsy not only celebrated her birthday in Los Angeles at the Games, but also celebrated victories in both the 50 meter free style, placing 5th, and the 50 meter backstroke, placing 2nd, and earning herself a silver medal. She also had the opportunity to meet, and take a picture with, swimming legend and Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps!

For more pictures of Betsy’s experience in the World Games and links to all of her news features, check out her Facebook fan page at Facebook.com/TeamBetsyCory.

Meet Ruth Fleury Volunteer of the Year

Ruth Fleury has been a beloved member of the Noah Homes community for more than a decade. She came

to Noah through her folk group at The Mission where she sings with Molly Nocon. Ruth quickly fell in love with Noah and we were blessed to have her serve on the Board of Directors for 12 years. Ruth is a regular volunteer in the casas at Noah and she loves spending time with the folks! If Ruth is on campus, count on the residents grabbing a hug – Ruth has quite the following among both residents and staff.

Ruth’s talents are vast. She is our renaissance woman on campus and is the first to volunteer at a moment’s notice. Just a few of her many duties include making meals with the folks, playing board games, visiting at Whispering Winds, helping with floral arrangements and assembling baskets for the silent auction, and taking residents on vacation. The full list of support Ruth provides is endless.

Ruth is notorious not only for her wonderful collection of colorful exotic hats and sunglasses, but for her infectious enthusiasm and love of Noah. Her Louisiana charm and accent make her even more endearing. She recently received a personal acknowledgement from Sen. Joel Anderson for over 100 hours of community service. Congratulations and thank you to Ruth for many years of support!

She is our renaissance woman on campus and is the first to volunteer at a moment’s notice.

Sharing Our Story of FaithNoah Homes had its simple beginnings among parishioners of the Sacred

Heart Catholic community in Coronado who wanted to create a living community for adults with developmental disabilities. We are so grateful for the monumental role that this parish played in the growth of Noah Homes and for all the support that the Catholic communities throughout San Diego have continued to provide for our wonderful residents.

With the help of multiple parishes, Knights of Columbus Councils, and Women’s Guilds throughout the county, Noah Homes has continued to stay true to its Catholic roots and had the means to continue to support our mission of maximizing our resident’s independence in a community environment that fosters dignity and respect, as well as personal and spiritual growth.

Launching our Catholic Partners initiative this August, we began sharing our mission at All Hallows parish in La Jolla, with plans to continue sharing our story with other parishes and hopefully achieving widespread diocesan participation in our Join the Journey campaign. Many of our residents’ families originate in these Catholic faith communities and we are calling upon them to help us in our journey to provide compassionate end of life care for all of their brothers and sisters in Christ who are beginning to experience the effects of aging.

Our Memory Care Homes will be an answer to many of our families’ prayers and we are thankful to our Catholic counterparts for all they have been able to provide thus far on this journey.

• RCP Block and Brick is donating stone

• Redland Tile is donating roofing for the homes

• Spark Cycle donated funds from their cycle classes offered in La Jolla throughout August

• HomeAid San Diego collaborated with business partners to donate over $500,000 in pro bono services

• Brookfield Residential is helping with the construction of the homes

• Standard Pacific is helping with coordination of all trades for construction of the homes

• Sukut is currently grading the site in preparation for the vertical build

• San Diego Granite is supplying all granite countertops for the new houses

Additional services and trades are needed: • Landscaping

• Technology

• All furnishings

Without the generous support of our families, friends and business community, these Memory Care Homes would not be possible. Please continue to share Noah’s journey!

Noah Homes nominated Peter Ferrantelli for the national Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) 2015 Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser – and

he won! This is not surprising considering he is “unequivocally, the best volunteer fundraiser on earth.”

Peter will be honored locally at the AFP San Diego’s National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, presented by National University’s Sanford Institute of Philanthropy, on Nov. 9 and will then receive his national award at the second annual National Philanthropy Day® Honors event on Nov. 12 in New York City.

Dedicated to improving the lives of those individuals most at risk, including infants, children, the elderly and people with disabilities, Peter has given his time as a volunteer and business owner, and more than $2.4 million in donations to a variety of organizations. These include, but are not limited to, Noah Homes, St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, University of San Diego High School, Friends of Handicapped Children, Scripps Mercy Hospital Neonatal Unit, and a preschool in the hills of Taiwan.

He has spent a decade as founder and current chair of Noah’s Ark Angel Foundation, and has raised more than $1.7 million. Previously, he served two terms on the Noah Homes Board of Directors. Peter most recently volunteered to lead our $6.7 million Join the Journey capital campaign, which has raised more than $4 million in less than six months.

Since 1960, the AFP has advanced effective and ethical philanthropy for the world’s largest network of professional fundraisers. AFP’s more than 30,000 members raise more than $100 billion annually.

On a sunny Saturday in August, Noah Homes hosted a free event at the Hotel Del Coronado to invite

the residents of Coronado to learn about the wonderful place that was dreamed up in Coronado – Noah Homes.

We celebrated Noah’s founders and shared our exciting plans for the future.

Noah supporters including Leslie Crawford, a Coronado native with a son who lives at Noah Homes; Francette Roeder, who is married to Bernie Roeder, nephew of Walter Fitch III; and Ann-Marie Bryan, a journalist for eCoronado.com all helped spread the word. The Hotel Del Coronado was also gracious enough to donate the space and food. We couldn’t have done this without them.

In addition to making 30+ new Noah Homes connections, we are looking forward to having these new friends come visit the folks and get to know the people we are advocating for. We will be hosting campus tours for our new Coronado friends on Thursday, October 1 and October 8. For more information, please contact [email protected] or 619-660-6200 x126.

As always, the residents are out and about in the community, including in Coronado. Come join us at one of our upcoming events that are listed on the back of this issue of the Navigator!

“What you do today will last a Lifetime” — PJF

A Note from

Hi Folks, Let’s Have Some Fun!

As you all know, I’ve been speaking with you through the music of great scores from the past, and this will be no different.

It’s no secret that I co-chair the campaign to build two specialty homes for our residents who become ill with Alzheimer’s. This will be the first program of its kind in California and possibly in the United States.

It’s no secret that many of you have joined the campaign to help fund the building of the homes. It’s no secret that when the homes are built, Noah Homes will be looking to its Foundation to help keep its budget in balance. I have a song to remind us all of the joy of helping the Foundation in our support of Noah’s residents.

Words and music by George Gershwin

“Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries”

“Life is just a bowl of cherries. Don’t take it serious, life’s so mysterious You work and save, you worry so, but you can’ttake your dough when you go, go,

go.” Thanks for your past support and sense of humor; it keeps me going!

— Peter J. Ferrantelli, Chair
