Over the month of October, Notre Dame students brought in donations for the Ugandan Water Project to help give water to the thirsty. Our partnering with the Ugandan Water Project helped to provide a water collection tank for a school in Uganda. The company also provides water filters and drills boreholes in towns and villages, all in the hope that the current generation is the last generation that has to walk for miles for water, nonetheless water that is extremely unsanitary.

Working with a great company with a great cause, Notre Dame helped to raise over $4,600, more than $1,000 over our goal of $3,600. Seniors brought in $2,306, Juniors brought $628, Sophomores donated $687.05, and the Freshmen gave $315. Our dress-down day also came in after to pitch in just a little bit more money to the cause. Twenty-six people brought in $50 or more, earning themselves a bracelet, while 12 of those people gave $100 or more, earning a t-shirt. Overall Mary Vandenbosch overwhelmingly gave the most money: over $1,000! She received a painted machete with the landscape of Uganda in the background.

Finally, we had a water-walk around Notre Dame and the blocks around it to help promote what we had done, and encourage others to donate. We walked so this generation of Ugandan people would be the last to walk for water, and we will be able to see what we have done to help others in the coming future.

The date was November 11th, 1918. An armistice between the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria) and Triple Entente (The United Kingdom, France and Russia) happened at the 11th month, 11th day and 11th hour. Both sides agreed the loss was too much, and decided to end the fighting on air, land and sea. Exactly one century later, here in our beautiful country, we celebrate it with thanking our veterans who fought valiantly in Korea, Vietnam, and all other American-involved conflicts. We also show our appreciation to those who are prepared to fight, if they are not already protecting and promoting everything we hold dear. At 11:00 AM, 11 minutes of silence are held in honor of Armistice, or Veterans’ day.

Fun Fact: A common misconception of WW1 is that Germany started the war. In actuality, leaders in Vienna, Austria (at the time the Austro-Hungarian Empire) declared war on Serbia, which truly set off the chain reaction in Europe.

Veterans Day: Honoring the Armistice Jack Schreiner, ‘21

As some of you may have heard and even been asked about, a Notre Dame cross-country coach has recently been arrested over inappropriate behavior with a female student on his team. Although this situation is very unfortunate to hear about, this was not something that occured at our school. The situation happened at Notre Dame High School in Elmira, NY - not Batavia - and was not our beloved Sectional-winning Coach Geitner, but a 23-year-old Cory McCarthy from the other Notre Dame. The crime was handled by law enforcement and McCarthy is facing the serious consequences of his actions, but it is at least safe to know and be able to tell “non-Notre Damers” that our halls and students are safe and our reputation is clean.

Not Our ND!Matthew Stevens, ‘19

Notre Dame Reaches Out to Veterans: On November 28th, ND hosted a non-uniform day where students were asked to bring in one item that will be packaged and shipped to active military personnel for the holidays. This was a great way for our school to help our service men and women.

Recipes from Mary V.Mary Vandenbosch, ‘19

A great way to use up your Thanksgiving leftovers is to make turkey stock. This stock is a wonderful base to savory soups you can serve during the holidays.

Roast Turkey Stock

1. When you prep your turkey for roasting, check that little paper bag and save the neck. Some people also find it easier to remove the tips of the wings, so if you do cut them off, save them.

2. After the meal, cut off all the meat you wish to save for other leftover purposes.

3. Using a heavy knife, break the carcass into smaller pieces.

4. Place the bones (including the neck bones and wing tips) in a large pot. Add just enough cold water to cover the bones and bring to a simmer.

5. Simmer about 2 hours, adding some chopped carrot, celery, and onion during the last 45 minutes, along with some aromatic herbs (like parsley, bay, and thyme).

6. Strain and season to taste with salt and pepper. Garnish with diced chicken, noodles, rice, or diced vegetables to make a nice soup.

Thank you to the wonderful Chefs at the Culinary Institute of America for providing this great idea.

Wednesday, Nov. 28th, 2018 Notre Dame High SchoolNODAHI OPINION

We hear them all the time. People saying things about somebody else that may or may not be true. Whether they’re true or not, they will get spread. You don’t think about it, all you were doing was telling your best friend the story you just couldn’t keep to yourself. But the rumor isn’t about you. It doesn’t have an impact on you. So why would you consider the consequences?

It started over something dumb. Some ridiculous fight. Maybe it was over a guy, maybe it was jealousy, or something someone did that annoyed you. Whatever it was, it wasn’t worth this. So you had a fight, and you were so mad. What right did she have to say or do what she did? Her side of the story didn’t matter to you. You needed to get back at her. So you went to school the next day and told your friends something nasty about her, but it wasn’t true. You left that detail out, so your friends thought it was true. Your friends told their friends, who told their friends, and so on. Soon enough everybody knew. Everyone but her. She was totally oblivious. She had absolutely no clue.

You had a fight with your friend. You both said some things that you didn’t mean. At least, you knew you didn’t mean what you said. After a couple of days, you figured she was cooled off so you could apologize. So you decided to find her after school, tell her how dumb you were, apologize for what you said. As you went through your day, you began to notice some odd behaviors. People were looking at you, pointing at you, and you were sure you could hear your name being whispered during class. You were so distracted by it you completely forgot to talk to her after school. You thought that maybe it was just you. So you went to school the next day. But it was the same, if not more obvious. People were laughing, pointing, giving you looks. You knew something was wrong. But that day you remembered you were supposed to talk to her. So at the end of the day you waited at her locker. When she got there you started to tell her how sorry you were. When you finished talking, she shut her locker and walked away. Nothing. No words, not even a look. You were upset, but you tried to deal with it. After all, you did say some nasty things to her. Sure, she said them too, but you wanted to be the bigger person. Before you could even leave the school, a group of girls stopped you. And they said something to you that you could never have imagined would be said. But what really got you was that you had absolutely no clue why they said that. Suddenly everything made sense. The looks, the pointing, the whispering. You felt sick to your stomach, you had to get out of there. How could something like that be said about you? The thought crossed your mind that maybe she did it, she couldn’t have.

Rumors… an all-too-familiar scenario?Rachel Nickerson, ‘21

No matter how mad she got, she was your best friend, she wouldn’t do that. You left the school, desperate to get out of there before you had to see anybody else. When you got home, you made the mistake of going on your phone. You saw post after post, repeating a similar story about you that was unfamiliar to you, because it never happened. But they didn’t know that. You didn’t know what to do, what to say, because it happened so fast it didn’t seem real. But it was. There was nothing you could do about it.

It’s been three days since you walked away from her without a word. You didn’t leave because you were still mad. You left because of what you did. You couldn’t accept her apology without telling her what you did, and she couldn’t know. But she did know. There were posts everywhere, and she wasn’t in school. You didn’t think the rumor would keep going, but it did. You still did nothing. Why would you say it wasn’t true? Then everyone would think you’re a liar. You were in class when the announcement came, calling you to the office. So you grabbed your books and left the room. You didn’t know her mother called the school. You didn’t know your friends mentioned that you told them. You got confronted by the principal. Your friend wouldn’t go to school because of what people were saying about her. She couldn’t face them. So you got suspended, but it didn’t end there. Everyone still thought it was true. She still couldn’t go to school. People were sending nasty messages to her directly. So she transferred. Your best friend left because of you. You didn’t think it could get to this but it did. She’s gone now, won’t talk to you, and you lost a friend. Because of a rumor.

Not every rumor gets to this point, but that doesn’t mean it won’t affect anyone. Think before you say something about someone, because once you do, you can’t control it anymore.

Have your own opinion or story to share with the

NODHAI Notre Dame student news team is proud to present the NODAHI. Advised by Mrs. McNally, they strive to produce an issue once or twice a month. However, this cannot be done without your support. Whether that be taking photos at a game, interviewing a teacher about their unique hobbies or sitting in on a important meeting to get the inside scoop. Since NODAHI is student run, then content gathered by students is needed.

Meetings are held every Thursday in Room 208 and only run about 10 minutes. If you would like more information, please see Mrs. McNally or editor Mary Vandenbosch.
