Get startedYour phone uses a micro-SIM card, also known asa mini-UICC card.

The phone must be switched off before insertingthe SIM card.

1. Use the SIM door key to unlock the SIMholder. Push the key into the hole until the holderis released.

2. Pull out the holder.

3. Put the card in the holder with the contact areaface up, and push the holder back into the phone.

4. To switch the phone on, press and hold thepower key.

To charge the battery, connect the USB cable tothe charger, the charger to a wall outlet, and themicro-USB end of the USB cable to your phone.You can also charge the phone from yourcomputer with the USB cable.

If the battery is completely discharged, it maytake several minutes before the chargingindicator is displayed or before any calls can bemade.

Create a Microsoft accountTo get apps from Store or access more Microsoftservices, such as SkyDrive or Hotmail, your phoneguides you to create a Microsoft account.

You can also sign in to your existing Microsoftaccount, which you use to access, for example,Hotmail.

Your phone needs to connect to the internet. Ifyou don't have data plan, the data transmissioncosts may pile up quickly. For info about possibledata costs, contact your network serviceprovider.

Try out the touch screenTo use your phone, simply tap or tap and hold thetouch screen.

SwipePlace a finger on the screen, and slide it in thedirection you want.

Zoom in or outPlace two fingers on an item, such as a photo, andslide your fingers apart or together.

Get the basicsMake a call

1. Tap > , and type in the phone number. Todelete a number, tap . To type in the +character, used for international calls, tap andhold 0.The + character may not work in all regions. In thiscase, enter the international access code directly.

2. Tap call. To end the call, tap end call.

Take your friends with youGet in touch with your friends, family, colleagues,you name it. The People hub is the place tomanage all your contact info.

You can continue to browse Store whiledownloading. When you've finished, you can findthe new apps in the apps menu and the games inthe Games hub.

If your phone isn't responding, press and hold thevolume down key and power key for about 10seconds. The phone switches off. You may haveto switch your phone on again. No content, suchas contacts or messages, is deleted.

Save energyYou don't need to charge your battery so oftenwhen you switch battery saver mode on. On thestart screen, swipe left, and tap Settings >battery saver.

You can also do the following:• Close data connections, such as Bluetooth or

wireless networks, when you're not usingthem.

• Set your phone to check for new mail lessfrequently.

• Lower the screen brightness, and set thescreen to turn off after a shorter time.

• Mute unnecessary sounds, such as key tones.

Feature-specific informationUsing services or downloading content may causetransfer of large amounts of data, which mayresult in data traffic costs.

The social networking services are third-partyservices and not provided by Nokia. Check theprivacy settings of the social networking serviceyou are using as you may share info with a largegroup of people. The terms of use of the socialnetworking service apply to sharing info on thatservice. Familiarize yourself with the terms of useand the privacy practices of that service.

Note: Using Wi-Fi may be restricted in somecountries. For example, in the USA and Canada,you are only allowed to use 5.15–5.25 GHz Wi-Fiindoors. For more info, contact your localauthorities.

Important: Use encryption to increase thesecurity of your Wi-Fi connection. Usingencryption reduces the risk of others accessingyour data.

Important: Before sharing your location, alwaysconsider carefully with whom you are sharing.Check the privacy settings of the socialnetworking service you are using, as you mightshare your location with a large group of people.

Important: This device is designed to be usedwith a mini-UICC SIM card, also known as a micro-SIM card only. A micro-SIM card is smaller than thestandard SIM card. Use of incompatible SIM cards

may damage the card or the device, and maycorrupt data stored on the card.

The availability, accuracy and completeness ofthe location info depend on, for example, yourlocation, surroundings, and third party sources,and may be limited. Location info may not beavailable, for example, inside buildings orunderground. For privacy info related topositioning methods, see the Nokia PrivacyPolicy.

You can use USB charging when a wall outlet is notavailable. Data can be transferred while chargingthe device. The efficiency of USB charging powervaries significantly, and it may take a long time forcharging to start and the device to startfunctioning.

Keep a safe distance when using the flash. Do notuse the flash on people or animals at close range.Do not cover the flash while taking a photo.

Do not connect products that create an outputsignal, as this may damage the device. Do notconnect any voltage source to the audioconnector. If you connect an external device orheadset, other than those approved by Nokia foruse with this device, to the audio connector, payspecial attention to volume levels.

Important: Avoid scratching the touch screen.

Contents of digital maps may sometimes beinaccurate and incomplete. Never rely solely on

the content or the service for essentialcommunications, such as in emergencies.

Flight mode closes connections to the mobilenetwork and switches your phone's wirelessfeatures off. NFC is not switched off. Comply withthe instructions and safety requirements givenby, for example, an airline, and any applicable lawsand regulations. Where allowed, you can connectto a Wi-Fi network to, for example, browse theinternet or switch Bluetooth on in flight mode.

Find your phone labelIf you need to call Nokia Care or your serviceprovider, you need specific information listed onyour phone label.

The phone label is under the SIM holder.

To open the SIM holder, push the SIM door keyinto the hole until the holder is released, and pullthe holder out.

To see the phone label tray, put the door key intothe hole on the side of the tray, and pull the trayout.

The label contains the model number, as well asother important information about your phone.

Network services and costsYou can only use your device on the LTE 700, 850,1700/2100, 1900; UMTS 850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100;and GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz networks. Support forLTE networks may have been disabled on your devicedepending on your country or service provider. You needa subscription with a service provider.

Using some features and downloading content require anetwork connection and may result in data costs. You mayalso need to subscribe to some features.

Take care of your deviceHandle your device, battery, charger and accessories withcare. The following suggestions help you protect yourwarranty coverage.

• Keep the device dry. Precipitation, humidity, and alltypes of liquids or moisture can contain mineralsthat corrode electronic circuits. If your device getswet, let the device dry.

• Do not use or store the device in dusty or dirty areas.• Do not store the device in high temperatures. High

temperatures may damage the device or battery.• Do not store the device in cold temperatures. When

Battery and charger infoYour device has an internal, non-removable, rechargeablebattery. Do not attempt to remove the battery, as youmay damage the device. To replace the battery, take thedevice to the nearest authorized service facility.

Charge your device with AC-16U or AC-50U charger.

Third-party chargers that comply with the IEC/EN 62684standard, and that can connect to your device micro USBconnector, may also be compatible.

The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds oftimes, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk andstandby times are noticeably shorter than normal, toreplace the battery, take the device to the nearestauthorized service facility.

To unplug a charger or an accessory, hold and pull theplug, not the cord.

When your charger is not in use, unplug it. Do not leave afully charged battery connected to a charger, asovercharging may shorten the battery’s lifetime. If leftunused, a fully charged battery will lose its charge overtime.

Always keep the battery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and77°F). Extreme temperatures reduce the capacity andlifetime of the battery. A device with a hot or cold batterymay not work temporarily.

Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as they may explode.Obey local regulations. Recycle when possible. Do notdispose as household garbage.

Do not dismantle, cut, crush, bend, puncture, or otherwisedamage the battery in any way. If a battery leaks, do notlet liquid touch skin or eyes. Certification information (SAR)This mobile device meets guidelines for exposure toradio waves.

Your cellular phone is a radio transmitter and receiver. Itis designed not to exceed the limits for exposure to radiowaves recommended by international guidelines. Theseguidelines were developed by the independent scientificorganization ICNIRP and include safety margins designedto assure the protection of all persons, regardless of ageand health.

The exposure guidelines for cellular phone employ a unitof measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rateor SAR. The SAR limit stated in the ICNIRP guidelines is 2.0watts/kilogram (W/kg) averaged over 10 grams of tissue.Tests for SAR are conducted using standard operatingpositions with the device transmitting at its highestcertified power level in all tested frequency bands. Theactual SAR level of an operating device can be below themaximum value because the device is designed to use onlythe power required to reach the network. That amountchanges depending on a number of factors such as howclose you are to a network base station.

The highest SAR value under the ICNIRP guidelines for useof the device at the ear is 0.68 W/kg. Use of deviceaccessories may result in different SAR values. Message from the FDAThe U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides thefollowing consumer information about wireless phones.

Do wireless phones pose a health hazard?The available scientific evidence does not show that anyhealth problems are associated with using wirelessphones. There is no proof, however, that wireless phonesare absolutely safe. Wireless phones emit low levels ofradiofrequency energy (RF) in the microwave range whilebeing used. They also emit very low levels of RF when inthe stand-by mode. Whereas high levels of RF can producehealth effects (by heating tissue), exposure to low level RFthat does not produce heating effects causes no knownadverse health effects. Many studies of low level RFexposures have not found any biological effects. Somestudies have suggested that some biological effects mayoccur, but such findings have not been confirmed byadditional research. In some cases, other researchershave had difficulty in reproducing those studies, or indetermining the reasons for inconsistent results.

What is the FDA's role concerning the safety of wirelessphones?Under the law, FDA does not review the safety ofradiation-emitting consumer products such as wirelessphones before they can be sold, as it does with new drugsor medical devices. However, the agency has authority totake action if wireless phones are shown to emitradiofrequency energy (RF) at a level that is hazardous tothe user. In such a case, FDA could require themanufacturers of wireless phones to notify users of thehealth hazard and to repair, replace or recall the phonesso that the hazard no longer exists.

Although the existing scientific data do not justify FDAregulatory actions, FDA has urged the wireless phoneindustry to take a number of steps, including thefollowing:

• Support needed research into possible biologicaleffects of RF of the type emitted by wireless phones;

• Design wireless phones in a way that minimizes anyRF exposure to the user that is not necessary fordevice function; and

• Cooperate in providing users of wireless phones withthe best possible information on possible effects ofwireless phone use on human health.

FDA belongs to an interagency working group of thefederal agencies that have responsibility for differentaspects of RF safety to ensure coordinated efforts at thefederal level. The following agencies belong to thisworking group:

• National Institute for Occupational Safety andHealth

• Environmental Protection Agency• Federal Communications Commission• Occupational Safety and Health Administration• National Telecommunications and Information

Administration

The National Institutes of Health participates in someinteragency working group activities, as well.

FDA shares regulatory responsibilities for wireless phoneswith the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Allphones that are sold in the United States must complywith FCC safety guidelines that limit RF exposure. FCCrelies on FDA and other health agencies for safetyquestions about wireless phones.

FCC also regulates the base stations that the wirelessphone networks rely upon. While these base stationsoperate at higher power than do the wireless phonesthemselves, the RF exposures that people get from thesebase stations are typically thousands of times lower thanthose they can get from wireless phones. Base stationsare thus not the primary subject of the safety questionsdiscussed in this document.

What is the FDA doing to find out more about thepossible health effects of wireless phone RF?FDA is working with the U.S. National Toxicology Programand with groups of investigators around the world toensure that high priority animal studies are conducted toaddress important questions about the effects ofexposure to radiofrequency energy (RF). FDA has been aleading participant in the World Health OrganizationInternational Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Project sinceits inception in 1996. An influential result of this work hasbeen the development of a detailed agenda of researchneeds that has driven the establishment of new researchprograms around the world. The Project has also helpeddevelop a series of public information documents on EMFissues. FDA and the Cellular Telecommunications &Internet Association (CTIA) have a formal CooperativeResearch and Development Agreement (CRADA) to doresearch on wireless phone safety. FDA provides thescientific oversight, obtaining input from experts ingovernment, industry, and academic organizations. CTIA-funded research is conducted through contracts toindependent investigators. The initial research will includeboth laboratory studies and studies of wireless phoneusers. The CRADA will also include a broad assessment ofadditional research needs in the context of the latestresearch developments around the world.

What steps can I take to reduce my exposure toradiofrequency energy from my wireless phone?If there is a risk from these products--and at this point wedo not know that there is--it is probably very small. But ifyou are concerned about avoiding even potential risks,you can take a few simple steps to minimize your exposureto radiofrequency energy (RF). Since time is a key factorin how much exposure a person receives, reducing theamount of time spent using a wireless phone will reduceRF exposure.

If you must conduct extended conversations by wirelessphone every day, you could place more distance betweenyour body and the source of the RF, since the exposurelevel drops off dramatically with distance. For example,

you could use a headset and carry the wireless phone awayfrom your body or use a wireless phone connected to aremote antenna.

Again, the scientific data do not demonstrate that wirelessphones are harmful. But if you are concerned about theRF exposure from these products, you can use measureslike those described above to reduce your RF exposurefrom wireless phone use.

What about children using wireless phones?The scientific evidence does not show a danger to usersof wireless phones, including children and teenagers. Ifyou want to take steps to lower exposure toradiofrequency energy (RF), the measures describedabove would apply to children and teenagers usingwireless phones. Reducing the time of wireless phone useand increasing the distance between the user and the RFsource will reduce RF exposure. Some groups sponsoredby other national governments have advised that childrenbe discouraged from using wireless phones at all. Forexample, the government in the United Kingdomdistributed leaflets containing such a recommendation inDecember 2000. They noted that no evidence exists thatusing a wireless phone causes brain tumors or other illeffects. Their recommendation to limit wireless phoneuse by children was strictly precautionary; it was not basedon scientific evidence that any health hazard exists.

Do hands-free kits for wireless phones reduce risks fromexposure to RF emissions?Since there are no known risks from exposure to RFemissions from wireless phones, there is no reason tobelieve that hands-free kits reduce risks. Hands-free kitscan be used with wireless phones for convenience andcomfort. These systems reduce the absorption of RFenergy in the head because the phone, which is the sourceof the RF emissions, will not be placed against the head.On the other hand, if the phone is mounted against thewaist or other part of the body during use, then that partof the body will absorb more RF energy. Wireless phonesmarketed in the U.S. are required to meet safety

requirements regardless of whether they are used againstthe head or against the body. Either configuration shouldresult in compliance with the safety limit.

Do wireless phone accessories that claim to shield thehead from RF radiation work?Since there are no known risks from exposure to RFemissions from wireless phones, there is no reason tobelieve that accessories that claim to shield the head fromthose emissions reduce risks. Some products that claimto shield the user from RF absorption use special phonecases, while others involve nothing more than a metallicaccessory attached to the phone. Studies have shown thatthese products generally do not work as advertised.Unlike "hand-free" kits, these so-called "shields" mayinterfere with proper operation of the phone. The phonemay be forced to boost its power to compensate, leadingto an increase in RF absorption. In February 2002, theFederal trade Commission (FTC) charged two companiesthat sold devices that claimed to protect wireless phoneusers from radiation with making false andunsubstantiated claims. According to FTC, thesedefendants lacked a reasonable basis to substantiatetheir claim.

How does the FCC Audit Cell Phone RF?After FCC grants permission for a particular cellulartelephone to be marketed, FCC will occasionally conduct“post-grant” testing to determine whether productionversions of the phone are being produced to conform withFCC regulatory requirements. The manufacturer of a cellphone that does not meet FCC’s regulatory requirementsmay be required to remove the cell phone from use andto refund the purchase price or provide a replacementphone, and may be subject to civil or criminal penalties. Inaddition, if the cell phone presents a risk of injury to theuser, FDA may also take regulatory action. The mostimportant post-grant test, from a consumer’sperspective, is testing of the RF emissions of the phone.FCC measures the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of thephone, following a very rigorous testing protocol. As istrue for nearly any scientific measurement, there is a

possibility that the test measurement may be less than orgreater than the actual RF emitted by the phone. Thisdifference between the RF test measurement and actualRF emission is because test measurements are limited byinstrument accuracy, because test measurement andactual use environments are different, and other variablefactors. This inherent variability is known as“measurement uncertainty.” When FCC conducts post-grant testing of a cell phone, FCC takes into account anymeasurement uncertainty to determine whetherregulatory action is appropriate. This approach ensuresthat when FCC takes regulatory action, it will have a sound,defensible scientific basis.

FDA scientific staff reviewed the methodology used byFCC to measure cell phone RF, and agreed it is anacceptable approach, given our current understanding ofthe risks presented by cellular phone RF emissions. RFemissions from cellular phones have not been shown topresent a risk of injury to the user when the measured SARis less than the safety limits set by FCC (an SAR of 1.6 w/kg). Even in a case where the maximum measurementuncertainty permitted by current measurementstandards was added to the maximum permissible SAR,the resulting SAR value would be well below any levelknown to produce an acute effect. Consequently, FCC’sapproach with measurement uncertainty will not result inconsumers being exposed to any known risk from the RFemitted by cellular telephones.

FDA will continue to monitor studies and literature reportsconcerning acute effects of cell phone RF, and concerningchronic effects of long-term exposure to cellulartelephone RF (that is, the risks from using a cell phone formany years). If new information leads FDA to believe thata change to FCC’s measurement policy may beappropriate, FDA will contact FCC and both agencies willwork together to develop a mutually-acceptableapproach.

But, when itcomes to using wireless phones behind the wheel, it’simportant to remember that safety always comes first.

Drivers face many distractions in the car – from eating anddrinking to playing music or talking with other passengers.The wireless industry has worked closely with the publicsafety community, to help educate drivers on the rangeof distractions they face behind the wheel as well as whenit is appropriate to place or receive a wireless phone call.Educational efforts that provide practical and soundadvice, rather than legislation, are the best methods totruly affect driver behavior in a positive way.

Through industry-sponsored public serviceannouncements and outreach, drivers are reminded to,before reaching for the phone while driving, askthemselves, “Is this call necessary?” If it is necessary touse a wireless phone while driving, the wireless industryencourages drivers to follow some basic do’s and don’tsto ensure that a wireless phone doesn’t become adistraction.

Your wireless phone can be your best traveling partner –offering a lifeline in emergencies, helping to locatedirections and keeping you connected with family andfriends when necessary. In fact, wireless phones are oneof the best safety tools drivers can have on the road. Every

day, more than 200,000 calls are made from wirelessphones to 911 or other emergency services. That’s about140 calls every minute. More Americans are using theirwireless phones to report emergencies, to preventcrimes, and even to save lives.

But safety should be every driver’s top priority. Thatmeans making good judgment calls about when it’sappropriate to use your wireless phone. It also meanskeeping your eyes on the road and being cautious andcourteous of other drivers. Every state has hazardous orinattentive driving laws to discourage distracted driving –no matter what the cause.

Driving TipsIf it is necessary to use a wireless device while driving, thewireless industry encourages drivers to follow some basicdo's and don'ts to ensure that a wireless device doesn'tbecome a distraction.

1 Get to know your wireless phone and its features suchas speed dial and redial.

2 Position your wireless phone within easy reach.

3 Dial sensibly and assess the traffic; if possible, placecalls when you are not moving.
