    Radio

This high-availability communicationselement with 99.999% reliability and0.08 minutes unplanned downtime peryear brings market-leading functionalityto GSM-R. The Base Station Controller(Flexi BSC) and the Transcoderand Rate Adaption Unit (TRAU) areimplemented on one platform. Railwayscan choose delivery as separateelements or combined in one node. For interconnection, copper or bermay be used, with the choice of SDH,PDH and IP (CESoP). This supports fullIP connectivity for Flexi Base Stations,

making the solution both cost-eectiveand future proof.

The Nokia Networks Flexi Base Stationmodular design makes site acquisitionand installation easier, speeding up theroll out of network coverage in a newarea. Flexi EDGE Base Station allows theuse of existing site space sparingly andeiciently. Delivered with IP55 protection

and an impressive temperature range(-35C to +50C, temporarily +55C) it

may be installed indoors or outdoorswithout the need for air conditioning.

A fully functional macro-cellular BTSconsists of only two logical moduleswhich can be carried by one person.Capacity can be expanded easily simplyby adding modules. The same modulesare used in indoor and outdoor sites formacro- and micro-cellular solutions andcan be installed on oors, walls, or poles.

For coverage, the unit may even bedistributed over a number of sites.

For example, Nokia Networks TunnelSolution is ideal for covering shortand medium sized tunnels with noadditional equipment. This covers themajority of railway tunnels (about 80%),thus reducing complexity and OPEXconsiderably while increasing networkquality.

    Fixed transmission

The major move in xed transmissionis towards IP and, to allow QoS, towardIP/MPLS networks. Nokia Networksevolved GSM-R network elementsmake use of this to suit the needs ofthe GSM-R operator. This introducesmultiple connection possibilities on

various service levels, oering highredundancy and the benet of a multiplepath environment. Transmission may beoptical end-to-end via the numerousnetwork nodes to further improvereliability and maintainability.

    Microwave transmission

Nokia Networks microwave transmission, implemented using the FlexiHopperfamily of microwave radios, is integrateddirectly into the BTS, thus requiring nofootprint and making installation easier. Its network management is also highlyeicient and cost-eective, since it

utilizes the same management platformas the radio network.

    Network Management

The Nokia Networks strategy is basedon the unique NetActplatform. Thisuses all element managers and featuresumbrella management that includesenhanced performance monitoring anddisaster management capabilities.

Open Mobile softswitching for railways withZERO outage

Nokia Networks MSC/VLR is delivered as R4 MSS andMGW. This allows railways to use IP technologies andoers the operator, in combination with sophisticatedpooling and load sharing, a disaster tolerant system.

Resilience mechanisms like MSS pooling, MGW clusterwith virtual MGW concept and multihoming for BSC andSIGTRAN connections, ensure there is no single point offailure in the R4 system.

Nokia Networks GSM-R core supports the GSM-Rgeographic redundancy concept as described in ETSI

    standards.

NT HLR/One NDS and IN systemNT HLR (OneNDS) and IN system are built onserver blade architecture, making maximum use ofvirtualization.

Nokia Networks is using its globally successfulgeo-redundant subscriber database OneNDS. Thiscan be distributed via two or more geographicallocations in combination with the HLR front end todeliver a HLR with no single point of failure. Thisprovides seamless operation, no matter which partof the system may fail.

Bringing unity to diversity with ERTMS

Now that GSM-R has been selected asthe data carrier for the ETCS signalingsystem standard, it is an integralcomponent of the ERTMS (European RailTraic Management System, comprisingboth GSM-R and ETCS). The benets areconsiderable, for example, a continuousow of information can now be providedto on-board computers for calculatingspeed and braking proles.

With fewer xed installations along the

track, ETCS is far more cost-eectivethan conventional trackside signaling.Communication between driversand other parties is handled by staoperating from signal boxes or controlcenters, using a Dispatcher Terminaldesigned to make the most of GSM-Rs advantages. In the event of anemergency, calls are recorded by anAcknowledgement center, allowing faultanalysis after the incident. Cab Radiosfrom partner companies play a vitalrole within the GSM-R system. Theseincorporate all the EIRENE standards,

ensuring safe, easy and eicientoperation in any rail network equippedwith GSM-R.

    Safety features

GSM-R markedly improves the security, reliability and safety of rail services. For instance, it signicantly enhancescommunication with trains passingthrough tunnels, aording far greatersafety in case of emergencies. GSM-Rwill eventually be deployed across entirecontinents. Its total interoperabilityand compatibility will vastly improvethe safety and speed of all railwayoperational services. And train driverswill be able to communicate freely

throughout their journeys, regardless ofthe country they happen to be in.
